Yeah I think she was mislead about her chances in the all around. Her coach told her to assume she’d qualify. But her peers were gaining ground. It set up the heartbreak when she did not qualify. But then she learned a lot from not qualifying so I guess it turned out all right in the end.
Jordyn is such a tremendous inspiration and now Arkansas Head Coach. She had an injury at 2012 and I cried with her. She kept taking a step forward. Very proud of her.
What she did not say is that she actually finished 4th in the All Around qualifications at the Olympics and SHOULD have been included in the final had there not been the "two per country" rule, and two Americans (Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman) had finished ahead. That would have been even more of a reason to be frustrated but she was the ultimate class act and helped her team win gold. And then she could not compete in college because she had turned pro so she became a team manager and moved mats and did laundry for the UCLA team, where she became a great leader and ultimately a coach. She is a true inspiration in the way she lives her life, and the classiest person ever. THANK YOU JORDYN for this talk !
No, she SHOULD NOT have been included in the final because that’s not how it works. They went to two per country to make the finals more inclusive. That’s the rules.
Lizzie Brooks Are we going to get back to that again? One last time, the US pushed for this rule when the Romanians were winning everything... you cannot modify the rule every time it doesn’t suit you. Rules need consistency for all. Thank you.
Edgar The Boston, I'm not American. My point was that her performance during qualifications was not a terrible one since she finished 4th overall. Not being qualified when you're 4th must be even more frustrating. Yet she was resilient about it. Period. Is the rule fair or not, that's an other debate.
Lizzie Brooks your point is moot because Jordan knew the rules going in. She should have outperformed her American peers if she “deserved” a spot in the final. If qualifications were the finals, she still wouldn’t have medaled in fourth place. She’s a great gymnast but it just wasn’t her event. She had another chance in fx event finals but didn’t medal either. Injury mixed with nerves probably cost her in both, but she’s still a great champ.
Well that made me cry. As a huge fan and follower of elite and collegiate gymnastics, I have watched Jordan throughout her career. What a beautiful and strong woman. 💪🏻
A very inspiring video. As the saying goes, it’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain. I spent some 40 years waiting for the storm to pass, (abusive childhood) before I finally accepted that it never would, but that I could still have a great life regardless. I’m now 50, and looking forward to at least another 50 years, but this time I’ll be dancing in the rain! ❤️
Wow. I didn’t know how much I needed this. 😔 Two months ago my partner of two years left me for someone else. It was the beginning of my first semester as a senior in college. I currently have a 4.0 but I am afraid that it will not be the same after this term. The situation has made me slip into depression. I’m unable to focus on my studies as much as I used to. At times, I have completely no interest in studying at all. This caused my grades to plummet which just made me feel even worse. Now I am getting so mad. I wanna be able to control my life again. This video just inspired me to do just that. Wish me luck. ❤️
I’ve looked up to Jordyn since 2012. I was literally obsessed with her lol. But she teach is a strong girl and I’m so happy that I got the opportunity to see her grow and do so many new things. I love this girl to this day .
Wow! As soon as Jordyn started speaking, I listened with rapt attention. I had no idea I'd be hearing such a scintillating and inspiring speech, or that I'd glean from her story principles I could use in my own life to remain resilient.
Jordyn, it has been a true pleasure and honor to watch you grow into the woman you are today. Resiliency is a character trait that has never let you down and I agree it is a choice as well. You have made the choice and you are an inspirational voice to people all over the world. I applaud you for sharing your story and continuing to share your message of hope and inspiration. Your hometown will always be proud of you!! Cathy Gyurich
What does the poster of this mean “former gold medalist?” She IS a gold medalist; there is no “former.” The medal isn’t taken away 5 minutes later then name erased. There also is no “former President” the title remains, people are supposed to know who the “sitting” one is.

She’s a lot better at public speaking now than she used to be even a couple of years ago. She’s grown up a lot certainly since 2012. Unrelated but I have that exact same dress only mine is a deeper red.
This was great my only small suggestion is to refer to the time not as 2,880 minutes but 48 hours. I think everyone has a very clear understanding of that block of time and what they realistically could and could not accomplish in that time frame.
There were a lot of other athletes who needed to recover so much faster from the same level of disappointment. 30 minutes or less. Much greater accomplishment.
Beyond amazing speech...I heard her live at the MSU campus last yr!!!`she always draws me in...love her motivation n yes being in the medical field you definitely get trained to be resilient!!!!;)))
She’s an amazing person and a great spokesperson. It’s incredible how we forget that top athletes are actually human, you Never really know what is truly happening in their heart and brain, whilst criticizing them for not achieving exactly what these so called “fans” Want from them. Super Role model Jordyn, thank you 🙏🏻
Odd, the description says that she, "currently serves as an Assistant Coach for the UCLA Gymnastics Team," but she's been the head gymnastics coach at Arkansas since last April.
Because the same alternate you were talking about, belittled, and made feel bad the previous year came back and beat you. You never congratulated her, hug her or said good job. To me it was karma.
I really feel that Americans have some kind of syndrome where any obstacle that one overcomes, becomes an opportunity for book publishing, TED talk or Oprah book tour. Meanwhile most of the world looks at silly Americans and laughs thinking, you guys. We all have been trough a lot of things, its not a contest of who had it worse, its just life. Not mandatory book or speech we need to deliver. Just life. In America its mandatory "inspirational" talk. I find that particular part of American culture disingenuous. Especially in the way it is delivered in this speech. It feels so fake. With rehearsed pauses and everything. You know what is perhaps more inspirational. People who don't talk about their story, but use the lessons of what they have been trough for something else other than self promotion.

She also had bad injuries which is why she stopped and became a coach. Russia and GB also had three gymnasts in the top 24.

I suspect is meant to clarify she is no longer a reigning team gold medalist.

What a wonderful TED Talk & her message is such a simple but powerful one. Thanks Jordyn for taking the time & having the courage to share it.

Absolutely the gold medal Tedtalk. I have never thought of it this way, but you nailed it.
She doesn't need a gold medal to be a winner. It's how you live your life, not the medals you have. She is a great example.
she's literally an olympic gold medalist tho
