    I've been a PC guy for years, mainly for video editing, but I'm actually really glad that mac has been doing so well lately in terms of what they've been putting out. If I was needing to work on actual film sets instead of at home, I would probably get one of these in a heartbeat, as I reckon that'd be a really good place for them!

    I replaced my 2020 Mac Mini (Base) with a Studio (Base) and I'm loving it. I won't need to replace it for a VERY long time, barring any hardware issues that might arise. I have a Satechi Hub USB-C for my Mac Mini, and I was wondering what I was going to do with it now that I don't own one. I sat my Studio on top and plugged it in, and it fit neatly on top and had a plenty large gap to allow for air in between. So, if someone is looking for more USB-As or headphone jack or ANOTHER SD Card slot x 2, then it'll work just fine.

    It took me about 5 minutes to order this beast after the announcement and traded in my barely adequate Mini. It was simply a plug and play with my existing configuration in my studio and storage. This max performance is amazing and is a cost effective option with the trade in.

    • @chrisbogart687

      @chipotleman I got about 70% of what I paid for it about a year and half ago on sale. I figured It cost less than $10 a month to use the mini so it really softened the $$ of the Studio Max and I used my Apple Card and got $$ back and now I pay about $125 a month for a year so it became very cost effective and it is all a business deduction and decision.

    I'm still probably gonna get the "cheapest" 16" M1 Pro and it's for a few reasons.
    1) I want a high refresh rate, mini-LED display and 16" is big enough to hide the notch more than the 14".
    2) Portability means a lot more to me right now. Since I can't afford a new desktop AND a new laptop I'd rather settle on a laptop.
    3) The M1 Pro is a big enough upgrade for me compared to my 2017 i5 quad core intel 5k iMac and 16GB will be enough for me. I may end up saying f*ck it and getting 32GB but the we'll see.
    4) I'm fine with 512GB of storage because external storage is fast enough for me.
    So yeah, if I decide portability isn't important then I'll just get a base model Studio with maxed out RAM. I'm not a big time video editor so the higher specs aren't important to me.

    • @johansugarev
      @johansugarev 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leagueofotters2774 To be honest for the work that I do, which is editing sound effects in Pro Tools, it's not much different than the Mac mini M1 I had before. I made a few video edits, preforms very well but not 3x better than the Mini as the price would suggest. Also, it's not completely silent as the mini was, doesn't really bother me, but in a dead quiet recording studio it's a downgrade. Looking back, the only reason I didn't get a macbook pro is there's more stuff that may break on it. Otherwise they're the same machine.

    Hey Everyday Dad, Jose from Puerto Rico. I ordered the base model too, but bumped up the ram to 64gb and 1Tb storage. Still waiting on it from B&H to deliver. They said they'll get stock mid-May and start shipping. Realistically, I think maybe June for me. I hope I'm wrong on this and get it sooner. Having said that, this would be a major upgrade for me and first exposure to the newer M1 silicon, since I'm using a mid 2014 MacBook Pro with a dead battery and hooked to my wall socket. In my particular case, I'll probably notice the increase in speed and performance. I mainly use Photoshop and Lightroom. Let's see how it goes. Nice video!

      I have a Studio Max (with 1TB upgrade only) on order from B&H as well. Ordered it on March 16 and was estimated mid April delivery. Realistically, who knows? B&H has no idea so it’s useless to bother them about it. Had to think hard if maybe 512gb might be ok but my current onboard storage is more than 512gb but not over 1TB so having the bump will future-proof me. For archive storage I have plenty of external drives. Good luck!

    As my oldest is in college so we qualify for the Educational pricing and I traded in an older iPad the price was phenomenal. I would encourage everyone to look at the requirements for Educational pricing, there are probably many who qualify that don't realize it and the discount is very real. I have a Mac Studio M1Max and have it located laterally on a shelf. This means that I can very easily access the ports at the rear as the computer is located nearby to make adjustments. These machines are so compact that it seems unnecessary to be concerned about the location of extra ports on the front. It's not necessary to me and perhaps other people to have any difficulty access the rear outputs. Just. because that's how it was done previously with bigger machines this is isn't needed with the latest compact computers. Now a lateral position makes accessing the rear as well as the front input sockets easy.

Like you ED, I love the amount of ports - after 2 years WFH and juggling the USB ports on my 2014 5k iMac, I would love to have more without buying anything extra. Love it when young people talk about the high prices of the Mac Studio. Steve Jobs unveiled the first Apple Macintosh computer I purchased with a $2,500 price tag, on Jan. 24, 1984. In todays dollars my 1984 Macintosh on the introduction of the Mac Studio on March 8, 2022 adjusted for inflation would now cost $6,764.87.
    So please get over the price. Only question should be do you need all the power of either the Mac Studio models? For this normal no I do not. I was looking hard at an Apple Studio configuration that would have cost me less than my original Macintosh adjusted for inflation at $4,198.00.
    Thing is always purchase the best tool that is going to do the job you need it to do.

      An big heart of the problem, is that a lot of newer jobs like 3d animation work, or heavy video editing, are starting to chew up more and more ram. So the power you'll see in the Mac studio is starting be a necessity rather than a nicety.
      And sure, you can hope that you'll land a job at a company that will cover the cost of your editing or animation rig. But more and more of those jobs are moving towards offering contract work instead of real employment.
      Which has the same hardware requirements as the work you used to be hired on for. But now your (temporary) employer isn't covering the cost of your work rig any more.
      And 2000 might not sound like much. But saving up that much can be its own burden when all the other prices keep jumping up too.
      It's harder to save when gas is 6 dollars a gallon. When rent jumps up another 100 dollars, because landlords are trying to get back the money they lost during the Covid rent pause. And then you have student debt unfreezing in a few months.
      Complaints about the 2000 dollar price mark are a microcosm of a bigger problem. That the hard ware demands for creative professionals are going up. While the spending power of middle class Americans is going down. While businesses rely more and more on contractors to fill in the gaps caused by the great Resignation.

    I bought a 27' imac back in the day for 1700$. A solid pc + 27 display, when the usual display size was 24 inch.
    Apple with it's overblown product portfolio is moving more and more in the direction it was before Steve Jobs came back.

    they want to make their connectivity work first, plenty of threads on support forum with issues on thunderbolt, usb-c, usb-a disconnecting with no other solution but to physically unplug and plug back in again. Apple deny any and all responsibility due to the accessory being 3rd party!

    how sure are you that you can do multiple displays per port? have you got a working method? This is something I would like to do, but Apple seems to think its unncessary to do more than one screen per port going by what they told me in store and also via AppleCare... I've been trying to get a thunderbolt 3 dock to do it, but no joy so far

    All I need would be an M1 Mac Mini (10G version, as I move a lot of things to my NAS), but I ordered an M1 Ultra with 128GB and 2TB storage. All the GPU cores, too. Total overkill, but why not? It’s going to take a little while to come in though, so I can’t get too excited yet.

      @@alang253 There’s a big difference between “need” and “would like to have”. The Mac Studio now is and will for years to come be my primary desktop, and I actually am making use of the GPU in it, and coupled with that new LG 40” 5120x2160 Thunderbolt monitor it’s been fantastic. I'm seriously thinking of buying the Mac Studio and I've watched all your stuff about this bit of kit. May I ask what its like using Davinci Resolve and rendering a 4K timeline with a simple colour grade of Noise Rediction (3 frames), simple colour correction, and Sharpening?
    My AMD Ryzen 3900x computer with a RTX 3070 can't render a 4k Timeline with these settings. I either have to drop the timeline to 1080 and live with that, or cheat and upscale a 1080 timeline during the render. But sadly my 3070 does not have enough vRAM to render a 4k timeline with Noise Reduction.

    • @Vincent_ITG
      @Vincent_ITG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly why I purchased the Mac Studio (base model). When I upgraded my camera to the Sony A7iv, my 2019 MacBook Pro would stutter when color grading and applying corrections (sharpening).
      Now I don’t have to worry with editing on my current workflow (4K/10bit 4:2:2). I can add fusion titles with no hiccups.
      Very happy with the Mac Studio.

      Yeah the new m1's are a whiz at handling video footage, I don't use noise reduction in resolve but with my 3 layers of HEVC files even the m1 standard did a great job and the m1 max is a breeze.

    Hi Gary great video. Im thinking of buying the base Mac studio, but I had been thinking of upgrading to 1TB SSD. Now I’ve been thinking should I upgrade to 2TB SSD or stick with 1TB SSD and upgrade to 64 GB ram. I’d like to hear your thoughts.

    • @DerekMckean
      @DerekMckean ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry. I'm not Gary. But I will still reply.
      I have the base with a 2 TB ssd. It was just about $2600 with tax from the academic store (no apple care, just tax).
      You save about a few hundred. Normally $2600 is your subtotal going from the regular store $2599 * (1 + .1025) = $ 2,865.40. Using the academic store, you save $265 since the 2 tb is about $60 cheaper on the academic store?
      Not a student? Take p.e. But then you'd end up spending that $300 you saved on the Mac Studio on a 2 credit PE test.
      I heard 64 gigs is the sweet spot. But if you just have 1 app open, you're fine with the 32. 128 gigs of ram is just nit needed at all..
      Since macs are expensive, maybe upping your GPU cores may be your first good move. I wish I did that. Iys only $200 on regular. About $180 on academic. And if you're going academic, you just moved up to the regular price but with 32 core gpu. And then to move up to 1 TB that's $200 regular $180 academic. Hence, subtotal ~$2200 academic ~$2399 regular, total regular $2645 regular total ~$2425 academic.
      Now if you want all of this plus 64 gigs ram, you're looking at a $3100 computer. It's kind of a souped up base but may be not as fast as the Ultra.
      Nut if you have $3100, you're sweet spot may consists of:
      64 gigs ram
      10 core cpu 32 core gpu
      1 TB
      However of you want 2 TB, you're souped up base will starting reaching the Ultra price range but not act Ultra at $3529 roughly with tax. And of you're going to spend $3500 on a base, it's better to spend $600 more to get Ultra since you're so darn close
      But if you're willing to settle at $3100 and a 1 tb 64 gigs ram 10 core cpu 32 core GPU, then your base will still be souped up but Stay closer to you budget and performance. And if you're willing to stay at 32 gigs ram you can stay in thr $2,000-$2500 range.

    • @normanrobson9957
      @normanrobson9957 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerekMckean thanks for the reply. Im in Denmark where the base model studio Costs $2400 with 10 core cpu & 32core GPU it costs $2640 then an upgrade to 2TB brings the price up to $3360. Then if i decide to upgrade to 64GB ram that will be a final Price of $4100. The price of the base Ultra is $4820. We pay 25% tax on everything in Denmark.

    • @DerekMckean
      @DerekMckean ปีที่แล้ว

      @@normanrobson9957 25%? Yikes. And I thought 10.25% was high. So you have to pay 2.5 times our state tax. New York state has the highest state tax at 12.7%. So your country has double the state tax of New York.

      Far more likely to get an m1/m2 pro mac mini if you ask me. That seems to be the sweet spot for a Mac mini up to 16 cores gpu (maybe 20 cores on an m2) and up to 32 gigs of ram. That would be a real mini power house.
