Bought the 8gb Mac mini about a week ago (first time Mac owner), and it's working fine for me so far. I use it to record audio with Logic Pro X. I don't run as many virtual instruments as some do, so 8gb should be fine for me. If it isn't I have about a month to decide if I want to return it, so time for some stress testing!
It works great for me. My workflow is generally pretty small , usually 2-8 instances of a neural DSP plug-in, ez drummer, and a few compressors / eq / reverb . Pretty sure all of those are native M1 at this point. The only thing I have trouble with is Native Instruments, specifically kontakt player and GGD . No native support for that yet
decided to bought this one (base model m1 mac mini) 3 years after you upload this video, to replace my 2011 macbook pro which mostly used sitting on the desk, connected to a monitor
I bought the base M1 Mac Mini and a 4K Samsung monitor to replace a once-top-of-the-line Late-2012 iMac 27" i7. Despite being nearly a decade old and working flawlessly the entire time the iMac couldn't run Big Sur so it was time for something new. The M1 Mini had a first-week USB-C compatibility issue that was fixed with a quick firmware update to the external drive. I will eventually buy another high-spec iMac (M2/M3/M4?) but for now -- surprisingly -- my little Mac Mini is easily handling everything I throw at it. Include me in the "very impressed" group.
I've got my eye on one of these specifically for coding. This IS the future. I'm also looking at that M1 MacBook Air for more general work because it's just so cute!
The only problem with getting anything from Apple is it’s like sticking your hand between gears. There is no escape, you get drawn in more and more with every turn of the gears. They don’t do this through vendor lock-in. It’s not like you can’t own an Android tablet and an iMac together, but they just have this enticing package of interrelated products. You start with an iPhone, and realize you can have your FaceTime calls and messages on your Mac, too, so you get one of those. Then you realize your iPad can be an auxiliary screen for your Mac, so you end up with an iPad, and one day, you wake up in a Starbucks, drinking terrible coffee and pretending to work on your screenplay, and you realize what you’ve become.
So I'm watching this a year later and I have just ordered a Mac mini with 8 core 16 ram, 1 tb ( I run 2 WMD 5 tb) and I'm really excited because it's on its way. I also ordered an LG 34" curved monitor that may not be the best but I can't afford the Mac. I am a video editor and have been using a 2017 MacBook Pro, but I always have to have a fan on in the office and sometimes ice packs underneath it. I run two monitors and a TH-cam channel. I really wanted the Mac Studio, can't afford it however I'm really really excited about this. Your video made me feel really good about my purchase. Thank you so much!
I purchased the MacMini with 512Gb (for backing up my 128Gb iPhone) of storage and 8Gb of RAM thinking I 'd need to replace it with 16Gb of RAM model when available... uh, no way. 8Gb of Ram stomps my 2019 MBP16" w/16Gb of RAM and 512Gb SSD that I recently sold (as a student with Chrome (10 tabs), Safar (20-30 tabs), Calendar, Mail, Word, Power Point, running simultaneously, etc). Apple did something that was an innovation for once. Way under advertised and one of the greatest innovations to date. They're going to stomp the market and I'm not sure how I feel about that :-O
Yeah, thank's to you, I bought the M1 Mac Mini, replacing my MacBook Air 2017. It's been a blast. My wife's gonna get her M1 MacBook Air, soon, afterwards.
Awesome video. Love your channel. I’m an iPhone user and I’ve always been on the fence of expanding my Apple echo system and get my feet wet with MacOS but I cringe and my credit card starts shaking when I see the price. LoL. But the Mac mini looks enticing. Thanks to you, that will be my next new toy. Keep up the inspiring videos.
I was upgrading my 2017 MacBook Air and the M1 Mac Mini has come at the right time. I have never had a Mac Mini before and your videos reinforced my decision to buy this. I recently bought a 32” Samsung curved monitor and have hooked up the MacBook and iPad Pro to it on split screens. It’s awesome. I’m really looking forward to plugging in the Mac Mini to this in place of the MacBook Air when I receive it. Your videos on this was really helpful. Thanks ver much for that.
I just purchased the mac mini. Very excited. My last computer purchased was 2005 macbook pro. It still works but the ios is so far out of date I can’t open internet pages. Apple is genius and simply... always works perfect
Let me start by saying... Yes, I'm an Apple guy. The last desktop computer I bought was a iMac in 2012. Which after 5yrs of abuse, it sadly died. Since then, I've only been using MacBooks. Until that is... 2020 iPad Pro! I literally downsized and used that device for EVERYTHING. Gaming, home use and all my work needs. And it's been working flawlessly, except the lack of screen size. (note.. I work in the Corporate/entertainment field with video editing as a hobby)... I knew I eventually wanted to get another desktop system (especially with COVID and doing a lot of work from home), but I also knew I wanted one with Apple's M1 chip. So I prepared myself for a long wait till next year. UNTIL...... I saw your review of the new Mac mini the other day. I did some secondary research.... and BOOM!! I went out and bought one over the weekend. And because of the Holidays, I was able to get a good deal on a 28" 4K monitor, keyboard and a few extras for less than the current intel iMac. I absolutely couldn't be happier or more impressed with this little guy. So.. Thank you for the review and recommendation. You Sir are legit!
I’d love to be able to buy one. I own a 10 year old Mac Mini, which isn’t great, but it still works. The new Mac Mini costs 800 euro, that’s more than I can save up in two years. For 90 percent of the world, 800 euro is a lot of money, so the only thing you achieved with this video, is that I feel shitty about my life. Thank you.
I got my 8gb mac mini brand new at best buy for $550.00. I only bought it for a little dead silent web browser and love it for just that. My gaming pc kicks its but in everyway. But for a little machine it works great. And for the low price it was perfect buy. I did try lightroom on it and it worked great and didn't tap into the swap memory and being people blew the whole swap memory out of the water when it doesn't even matter at all. You can swap memory up to 0.66TB a day and at that rate in 16 years the drive will finally be at the point where the drive is close to being warranty too and still not void the ssd warranty. Crazy when people actually do the math and not impulse buy because a lot of lousy youtubers make up fake stories for views that the 8gb model crashed and black screen because they didn't have enough system memory to do anything. But that being said its a solid little machine that's great for absolutely everything i throw at it. Can't game on a mac unless it's pretty much cell phones games but as a web browser like most macs are great for it fits the bill. But if I was to buy a mac for productivity i wouldn't at all. Build a pc. It's an absolute no brainer to be able to upgrade and keep up with the latest and greatest without buying a whole new computer for just one thing you want to upgrade.
Since there is a lot of honking outside my house every waking minute and that along with refrigerators is a lot. So a computer having or not having noise is basically the same for me
I have the m1 mac mini, and it's a nice computer. I also have a ryzen 5 computer with Nvidia gtx 970, and it's nice computer. NO, the mac mini WILL not play all your steam games, I know because I tried every different way, but my pc does. The mac mini is a Great computer for mac users because they really haven't had a decent desktop in awhile, and it's because of thermals and they're macs always throttling down. I blame that on Apple, because the pc's get hot too, but they have better cooling systems. I like the mac mini, and I don't do video editing and high end graphic work on it. I browse the internet, watch movies, play the casual games on it, listen to music, and all the general stuff. This is where it shines, and should be touted more for that for normal users than some kind of graphics work machine. There are some issues with it, but I am hoping that the next Apple update will fix them.
While the M1 is relatively powerful, it is not intended to be the soc of a powerful machine. It really is perfect in the fanless Air and for the purposes of an ultralight laptop. It is not ideal for the desktop Mini (even though the price is great) or the MBP. In a few months we will see the M1x in the MBP 14/16 and the Mini and we will see how the MBP and Mini really is supposed to be.
...but, you can only connect 2 monitors....with my 2017 iMac 21.5", I have two additional monitors---LG 32" QHD and an LG 34" Ultrawide; plus, with Univeral Control, I can use my 12.9" iPad Pro as a fourth monitor.
I like to have a recommendation from your side... If some one is going to buy a fresh desktop after the release of 24inch iMac M1, what I need to consider 1) Mac mini with third party keyboard, mouse and 4k display 2) iMac 4k retina display computer system (Avoiding the CPU performance out of comparison) What will be the value for money proposition...
If you're like me and already have a monitor, K&M, Speakers, and external storage, it's a no brainer! Though I did upgrade my keyboard and mouse to a Logitech MX Keys and Logitech M720 (Triathlon) to pair with my Gaming PC, Mac Mini, and work PC.
My 16GB/1TB M1 Mini will be here tomorrow to replace my aging 2014 Mini - Core i7/16GB/1TB. Need the storage and don't want to be crippled in the RAM dept.
I like your tech reviews the best. After that video I pulled the trigger and ordered the cheapest M1 Mac Mini yesterday. I was contemplating getting the one with 16GB Ram or bigger hard drive, but I think the basic model will do the job. I currently edit all my videos on iPad as my 2015 MacBook Pro is just too slow for video editing. I am hoping that with the M1 Mac Mini I can finally start using Final Cut Pro X to edit videos.
Bought my MM with M1 and 512gb of storage on release day. It’s snappy but I’m having issues galore with the USB-C to Display port on my monitor(screen won’t come on after it goes to sleep). It works fine when using the hdmi out to hdmi in on the monitor. I’ve been reading forums and this is apparently is a issue that’s not been resolved. I wish I would of known about this before I bought it.
I'd recommend you spending a 1000 dollars for theses specs, base M1 Model with 16GB Ram because you can't upgrade it later,10 GB Ethernet, and get the base storage cause you can get a faster SSD or External Hard-drive because more storage is cheap when your not buying from apple, this configuration is a 1000 bucks from apple and is the same price as the M1 MacBook Air but it has more ram and more ports so if you want to upgrade your desk setup with a stationary computer, this in my opinion is the way to go,ALSO IM THE PERSON WHO OWNS A MACBOOK AIR AND USES IT IN CLAMSHELL MODE AND WANT TO HAVE A SATIONARY COMPUTER BTW
What about a TV for a monitor? You can get a 4K TV for less than $150, some to just $100 or just use an existing TV and then a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can be purchased less than $50. I am super excited about this!
I am thinking of buying the 16gb ram model for 1080p (and presumably 4k, but mostly 1080p) video editing, programming, game development on Unity and light gaming (mostly fortnite). I want to use After Effects but im worried about it being slow and laggy on M1. Should I buy the M1 mac mini? if yes then should I buy the 16gb or 8gb model??
I bought the cheapest Mac mini m1. It is amazing! You don't need the extra ram. This is more powerful than my £4000 MacBook Pro and at a fraction of the price. Will be buying external hard rives.
@@MM-MLT I got the 8gb it’s literally amazing. I have 1 4K 43inch monitor and 1 1440p one. It is handling it really well. No lag what do ever. At first yes then did a software update and since then no issues.
I got a mac mini a few weeks back and used it for all my design work in the 15 years of using macs this is the most impressive for cost.. The most painful thing is io bought the MBP 16 with sup up GPU and 32GB ram and this has been a pain in my vaine in terms of performance

Gary...congrats on 260k and Chris Nichols’ mentioning you on DP Review...right up there with Ted Forbes and Gordon Laing! I recently purchased the M1 Mac Mini. Love it! Sounds like a good combo/workflow but wanted to see if you have thoughts/suggestions on it
What monitor are you using with the Mac mini? Also wondering what you are using for an external hard drive? I am concerned 256gb is not enough but want something quick for storing pictures and videos.
I’m holding out for the M series 16 inch MacBook Pro. Why? Because I’m spoiled with the larger screens and my current comp is a 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro. But we might get a Mac Mini and attach it to the back of a monitor using a VESA bracket to create a sort of iMac before the M series iMacs drop.
Mac mini + iPad Pro challenge. My dream setup is to use my Mac mini via my iPad Pro over WiFi with SideCar mirroring enable I guess. But the main challenges to get this done straight out the box or using and very old MacBook Pro to set up my Mac mini, transfer all my data then SideCar from the Mac mini to iPad Pro, and go from there. I use my desktop/ laptop very seldom these days since I got nine iPad Pro over a year ago, so it would be nice to do some light computing on my Mac from my sofa or bed, and use the Mac mini of the headless Mac. Can you do a demo or tutorial on something like that?
Can I hook up a Mac mini with my old but functioning mid 2011 imac to upgrade to a newer version. RIght now it will only go to High Sierra. I hate to buy a whole new imac.
Because of you, I have made up my mind, I’m going with 2018’ mini. Why? I’m moving from an old setup and I realized the M1 does not have enough type -C ports. Plus the ability to upgrade the RAM “myself” is cheaper. Also external ssd hub I can pair with this give s the expanded storage it get started. Lastly the 18 is still supported and technology needs to catch up to the M1. My MOTO: Understand your needs, an purchase accordingly. So thanks for the help.
I am on my second M! Mac mini and the main issue here is its bluetooth issue. My mouth and key board lose connection randomly in the middle of me working. It also has issue with home pod connection. Hi Gary, my daughter is running with a 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro and is in her third year at Uni studying Film Production. As part of her course she is editing film from Sony FS5, 6 & 7 pro film cameras. My thoughts were to buy an external GPU to do the very lifting. BUT NOW, the world has changed, would we be better off buying the base Mac Mini. Food for thought me thinks. So many questions and so many right answers, just need to pick one. Great videos as always. So from 25 miles north of London, Be lucky stay safe.
I am thinking of buying one for editing too, I have used mac and windows both and personally I like how good and lag free experience on Macs, though Windows seems easier to use. But to answer your question, yes this a really good for editing and it is better than any other computer at the same price point.
You would first need to learn Final Cut Pro, or wait for the m1 optimized version of your preferred video editing software. As of right now, Adobe Premiere Pro takes like 4 - 5 times longer to render (depending on video codex). Speaking of video codex, you would also need to switch to a video codec that works well the the new m1 (10-bit HEVC (H.265))

How is it? Should I go with the base model or the same one you got for video editing
$699 in America, $950 in Britain!
Plus keyboard and mouse.
I'm am still very tempted.
Can the cheapest mac mini m1 export a feature film 6K file without any faults? Would love to see the timing and performance of this.
6K? You are buying $700 mac for a $6k monitor?
Hey. What display did you buy? I’m looking for a good high pixel density monitor for my new mac mini.
@@KirillD. I went with a 28” Samsung 4K UHD from Best Buy. They had more “higher end”, but this works perfectly for what I’m using it for.
Thank you.
Hi there. Thank you for your contagious happiness. Just ordered mine for my Christmas setup ;-).
My wife and I are originally from Cleveland, love your t-shirt! Thank you for convincing us to buy an M1 Mac Mini.
Awesome 👏 which monitor you will buy for the mini, do you recommend one that doesn’t brake the bank?
I have a Samsung ur 59 curved 4k monitor which is uk gbp £379.99
And it’s fantastic!
So a computer having or not having noise is basically the same for me
@@tony24-u9x yeah they are probably made for people like me who want relief but I don't think I can ever get a hand on that

Good review. I just purchased one. The base model Mac Mini m1 is now $550 at MicroCenter. $150 off retail.
I have an Intel Mac (2018 mini) and have upgraded to Big Sur with no issues. I like Big Sur more than I did with Catalina and all run nice.
...but, you can only connect 2 monitors....with my 2017 iMac 21.5", I have two additional monitors---LG 32" QHD and an LG 34" Ultrawide; plus, with Univeral Control, I can use my 12.9" iPad Pro as a fourth monitor.
I like to have a recommendation from your side...
If some one is going to buy a fresh desktop after the release of 24inch iMac M1, what I need to consider
1) Mac mini with third party keyboard, mouse and 4k display
2) iMac 4k retina display computer system
(Avoiding the CPU performance out of comparison)
What will be the value for money proposition...
How it’s going?
My dad bought me a Mac mini at my 12 birthday, I am using it to watch TH-cam now. I am going to turn 18 next month.
Happy birthday day dude

I'm sure you could but I prefer computer monitors for my computers. I don't have an evidence for why its just what I always do.
16gb of ram? Any Bluetooth issues?
@@MM-MLT I got the 8gb it’s literally amazing. I have 1 4K 43inch monitor and 1 1440p one. It is handling it really well. No lag what do ever. At first yes then did a software update and since then no issues.
I got a mac mini a few weeks back and used it for all my design work in the 15 years of using macs this is the most impressive for cost.. The most painful thing is io bought the MBP 16 with sup up GPU and 32GB ram and this has been a pain in my vaine in terms of performance
For video editing, would you still recommend the base model? My concern is 8gb vs 16 go unified memory for video editing. I know I will be working with DaVinci resolve with this
Same! How does DaVinci work on this?
@Fionn MacCuill ended up settling on the m1 pro MacBook Pro! Can’t complain with the performance it never fails to impress
I run Final Cut Pro. Do need to spend the extra money for the 16 gig version or is the 8 gig ram enough?
Eric
Wondering that myself. I run pro tools, Adobe premier etc.
Fret, other sites are saying 8 gig is enough unless you are running a ton of other apps. For me it seems 8 gigs will be sufficient. Just bought mine from Costco. Will be setting it up next week. I’ll post back here how it works
Eric
Love your personality and positivity, keep it up!
Thanks so much!
8Gb or 16GB of unified memory?

Gary...congrats on 260k and Chris Nichols’ mentioning you on DP Review...right up there with Ted Forbes and Gordon Laing! I recently purchased the M1 Mac Mini. Love it! But I can’t take it to the recliner with me. My choices seem to be, trying to remain cost neutral, return the Mac Mini and get an M1 MacBook Pro or get the iPad Air 4 for mobile use and keep the Mac Mini. I blog and do food photography, primarily. Your 2 cents on the laptop replacement functionality of the iPad Air 4 is appreciated!
Video idea: can you do a workflow/set up with a Mac mini + iPad Air/Pro with keyboard. I find for heavy applications users are sitting down for a while at a desk setting which would be good for Mac mini and iPad w/ keyboard would be a good portable machine for your everyday emails and word/spreadsheet processing. Sounds like a good combo/workflow but wanted to see if you have thoughts/suggestions on it
What monitor are you using with the Mac mini? Also wondering what you are using for an external hard drive? I am concerned 256gb is not enough but want something quick for storing pictures and videos.
Great review just what I wanted to know to the point. - Keep up the good work you do. Question: Which wireless keyboard is that ?
Super helpful. New subscriber for you!
Can you do a demo or tutorial on something like that?
it doesn’t have thunderbolt three ports. It has usb 4.0 ports. Thunderbolt is an intel technology.
👀 Thanks for the video and sharing your thoughts. I enjoy very much your communication style. Blessings on your day.
What do you think of using the Mac mini as a Apple TV replacement
I am on my second M! Mac mini and the main issue here is its bluetooth issue. My mouth and key board lose connection randomly in the middle of me working. It also has issue with home pod connection. The second one has the same issue. So, you have to be ok with dealing with the problem. hopefully, they will fix it with an update
Is it still ocurring? Some people say the last update fixed it
Hi Gary, my daughter is running with a 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro and is in her third year at Uni studying Film Production.
As part of her course she is editing film from Sony FS5, 6 & 7 pro film cameras. My thoughts were to buy an external GPU to do the very lifting.
BUT NOW, the world has changed, would we be better off buying the base Mac Mini. Food for thought me thinks.

I've never had a Mac or Apple anything 😕 🤔 Would this be the best computer for editing over any others out there?
I am thinking of buying one for editing too, I have used mac and windows both and personally I like how good and lag free experience on Macs, though Windows seems easier to use. But to answer your question, yes this a really good for editing and it is better than any other computer at the same price point.
You would first need to learn Final Cut Pro, or wait for the m1 optimized version of your preferred video editing software. As of right now, Adobe Premiere Pro takes like 4 - 5 times longer to render (depending on video codex). Speaking of video codex, you would also need to switch to a video codec that works well the the new m1 (10-bit HEVC (H.265))
yes it is worth it!!
I bought it with a monitor magic keyboard and magic mouse 1000USD all in!! Imovie is there for free it’s good for learning video if you want its free..I personally bought lumafushion and I’m just waiting for the updates🙂
I don’t know what your workflow is, but personally I use an iPad pro with the apple pencil and Premier Rush. I don’t do heavy loads(just animations), so I can’t say how it works with 4k.
I never had anything from Apple to now, I bought a 2 months ago an iPhone 11.

What M1 Macs are good for running WoW?
What upgrades are needed for WoW? RAM? SSD?
