    The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
    My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
    I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

      That will actually work if the league also brings back the no-zone man-to-man defence. Today, the league is playing a variation of a zone defence. I understand the move. It is to keep in step with international style of play, ever since the league decided to send pros to international Fiba tourneys. This allowed hand-check and man-to-man defensive rule will make these 3 pt-shot-dependent players and team like the dinosaur, a thing of the past.

    • @rebelranger
      @rebelranger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Flopping is definetely a bigger problem today. However, Shaq would have fouled out every game if he had played in the 60's or 70's when ramming your shoulder into another player (or just barely touching someone with your shoulder) was an offensive foul. Shaq got away with murder.

      @@rebelranger not really. Yes, Shaq would probably have a much higher foul rate in today's game. As for earlier eras, lowering the shoulder and digging in was an offensive foul, but simply being massive and using normal post moves while defensive players helplessly bounced off was not.

      They still let stars play bullyball on offense. LeBron does it, and several others.
      This was not allowed prior to the mid-90s. Shaq would have been more likely to foul out in the 70s or 80s.

      I really have a problem with how hard they punished players for how that crowd acted. They needed way more punishment and measures for the crowd, they were throwing punches, drinks, objects the entire time. The players have to be punished, sure. But throwing a drink is a huge bitch move. Artest was out of the incident and it was deescalating. Asking a grown man to let a drink hit him in the face and do nothing? “Hey please let yourself get assaulted. “. Not saying he shoulda ran up on random people, but some common sense should have been shown in his punishment cuz anyone woulda been irate. And that fan on the court deserved every bit of that punch. You had no idea what he had on him or what he was trying to do but he was ready to fight. Huge security issues. This coming from a pistons fan who cheered against the pacers.

      @@1vaultdweller Maybe those two teams won more (in the 80s, specifically), but there were plenty of good to great teams back then. Just to recap:
      80s: Lakers, Celtics, 76ers, Pistons (who all won rings then), teams like the Bucks, who although they didn't win, were damn good (even knocking out Bird's Celtics in 1983) and Rockets (who knocked out Magic's Lakers in 1986) and up and coming teams like MJ's Bulls, Dominique's Hawks, Barkley's post-Dr J/Moses 76ers, Ewing's Knicks, the Cavs of Price, Nance and Daugherty, the Jazz led by Stockton and Malone, the Sonics with Xavier McDaniel and Tom Chambers, the Run-TMC led Warriors, Drexler's Blazers, the Suns of Kevin Johnson, Tom Chambers, Jeff Hornacek and Dan Majerle.
      90s: Most of those same teams carried over into the 90s. Of course, the decade was dominated by MJ's Bulls. The Rockets were able to sneak in two rings. The Sonics were then led by Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, the Suns traded Hornacek for Sir Charles, the Spurs led by David Robinson, the Warriors, Blazers and Jazz were still great. Ewing's Knicks battled MJ's Bulls for dominance in the East for most of the 90s, the Heat became formidable later in the decade, Reggie Miller led the Pacers to a couple of trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and a trip to the NBA Finals.
      Shit, I'm probably forgetting a few more teams from the 80s and 90s. So what you said was complete nonsense, my dude.

      Hand checking wouldn't do much. People talk about how much removing hand checking has ruined defense, but everyone ignores that the zone defense is permitted today whereas it wasn't permitted in the 90's. Zone defense makes it possible to play 5 against 1 on defense, and would make MJ's isolations more difficult. The real reason for today's inflated stats are analytics, offensive schemes have become more complex, and today's players are better shooters.

      @@ziginaigra The three second rule does limit the zone defense to an extent. You can't use a 2-3 zone defense like you can in college. However, the zone defensive rules are much more flexible and allow the defense to do a lot more things than they could with the old illegal defense rules. You can double team players without the ball, shadow players with the ball, double team the post to get around the defensive 3 second rule, play 3-2, 1-2-2 zones, and box and 1 defenses. MJ himself said he hated the zone defense when he played with the Wizards. Kobe said he preferred handchecking to zone defenses. You'll be able to see it in this video.

      @@ziginaigra Because the three point shot is how you beat the zone defense. Zone defenses are meant to prevent drives to the basket and easy layups. They are usually weaker the farther you go out. The 3 point shot in today's NBA has created so much floor spacing that it stretches zone defenses and makes them almost irrelevant. With that said, teams will still use zone concepts to shadow star players and play off of non-shooters like Ben Simmons to double team Jimmy Butler or Joel Embiid. Analytics have also improved offense because 3 pointers, lay-ups and free throws are all worth more than midrange jumpers. As far as MJ is concerned, he was far less efficient when he played with the Wizards. Granted he was much older, but Iverson's field goal percentage also dropped when zone defenses were implemented, as did T-Mac, Paul Pierce, and most perimeter and post players whose games did not have an at least average 3 point shot.

    Here’s the difference: all of the rules you listed before the 2000s were implemented for safety reasons. Hand checking was banned because “offense is sexy.” That’s what led to the game being soft: the coddling of the offensive player for the sake of entertainment value.

      NOBODY hand checked Jordan. You couldn't BREATHE on him without sending him to the line. In fact, ALL the no contact rules were made FOR Jordan. Against the Pistons in 1991, Jordan shot more free throws in a 4 game ECF than Lebron shot in the 7 game 2016 Finals against the "soft" Warriors. All these Jordan fan boy videos severely misrepresent what happened. The reason the 1990s were low scoring was NOT because the players were tougher but because they were less skilled--Oakley, Mason, Mahorn, Starks, Greg Anthony, Singe, Mahorn, Russell, Hornacek, Byron Scott, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey, Terry Teagle. That was why the product sucked. The game is WAAAY better today because explosive athletes like Westbrook and Kobe and Durant spent YEARS honing and perfecting their craft. Calling them "soft" is just dumb.

  • @LovingTinha
    @LovingTinha 5 ปีที่แล้ว +167

    The NBA looked at Michael Jordan and realized that the fans loved him so much and his style, that they wanted to change the rules and culture to allow more players to be as close to a clone as possible. What they failed to realize was that the fans loved Michael not just for how good he was, but the fact he did overcome some of the toughest defenses in NBA History. NBA kind of missed that part. And now this soft easy game is what we have. Guys like Michael Jordan in this era would find it too easy. It's not really a challenge anymore, it's more about putting on warm up dunk type highlights and showcase, than actually competing. It's like a shoot around competition than an actual intense practice session. Jordans training skirmishes would have been more intense and interesting to watch than a regular nba game from this era.

      James Lee well I’ve seen plenty of 80s games. FULL 48 minutes. Not highlights, not cherry picked clips. The full games and the “physicality” is extremely exaggerated. If you honestly think the NBA back then was some UFC battleground where players could supposedly assault each other with no repercussions, then you’re been lied too.
      Basketball back then was just that: Basketball. Referees existed back then.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Terror832 Lakers vs Celtics the marquis match up in the 1980's was extremely physical. It was the era of the big man and thats what I saw. We had hand checking putting forearms on the back. Elbows allowed when clearing rebounds. No layup rule for players coming into the lane. All common place and most now illegal. So you are wrong. You may have been watching basketball but maybe not the NBA. Also answer this question. Why dod they start prohibiting the things I mentioned if they were not being used. We saw the same thing in the NFL and NHL. Changed rules to lessen the physicality. They all followed the same trend. Say what you want. The evidence lies in the rule changes themselves.

    • @Terror832
      @Terror832 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Lee we can agree to disagree. I’ve seen the games and I don’t think it’s as bad as it’s made out to be. Maybe once every 50 possession you may get a slight hard foul but not to the point where today’s players can’t “survive” in that era. Just because something is “illegal” doesn’t mean players don’t do it. Flagrant fouls still exist in today’s NBA just like the hard hits still exist in the NFL. Granted their punishments are harsher but it still happens. That also applies for handchecking and other things referees don’t necessarily see.

Later on in the same game, another fan threw a drink towards the court, causing Kevin McHale to clean up the backboard before play could resume. Yes in my opinion the NBA has become to soft that's part of the reason why it has become boring!!! Now days pretty much any kind of aggressive physical contact is considered to be flagrant!!! That's what's made it so easy for players to score more points like CURRY, HARDEN WESTBROOK, and of course LEBRON JAMES and many others that sometimes can score at will!!! I don't think these guys would put up the points they do now back in the mid 80's against teams like the DETROIT PISTONS!!! Back then only players like MJ and WILKINS were able to score a lot of points but they sure took a beating in the process!!! Now days theirs a lot of players that can drive down the lane and score without being touched!!! Where as in the 80's and before then you weren't given any layup's or any kind of easy points!!! So yes they need to let them play a little more physical but without trying to hurt each other so it won't be to easy for anyone to score!!! Great video!!!👍👍👍

    Another great video, you use a very nice selection of images in the videos, different angles, as far as the I feel like it was a natural evolution of the league, you had to protect the players, but it just t became too soft, I really miss some teams playing good defense, I feel like the 2008 to 2012 seasons were the last of good defense teams. The playoffs from those years had some very good d. They have to find a balance at some point

      David duFresne guys are weaker than they were just 25 years ago. Look it up yourself. I grew up doing hard labor on a farm and I’m not kidding a lot of athletes seem fragile compared to when I was competing and as a 41 year old the 20 somethings are way more delicate.

    • @jamesmarhen
      @jamesmarhen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robmangeri777 that's because they are playing year round and are entering the league with more miles than past generations. This has been a concern for many people as players aren't resting their bodies or developing other aspects of their bodies since they aren't playing other sports. Players are more fragile because no one wants to let them rest. Same thing is going on with young pitchers in baseball.
