Yep, that could wind up being pressure put on that kid as well. Way too early to tell. They did the same thing with Luka comparing him to Bird (because they're both white) an I was thinking "slow down, let's see if he can even get a team to the finals before comparing him to an all time great". It's all about money an getting people to watch so they make up stories to tell. It can be a beautiful game without all that. Wen or Wembanyana, something like that. He's a leader in blocks already but still only 19 I think, they should definitely slow down on all the hype.
There's a reason that when knowledgeable basketball fans debate who the best 5 man team would be they always ask "which era rules are we playing by?" If you don't play physical defense and get to travel with the ball it really changes the conversation.
I don’t care what anyone else thinks. If lebron was drafted in 1985, he probably wouldn’t have lasted 10 years. Simply because his longevity is partly due to the softness of todays game. He may be big and strong. But in the 80’s and 90’s…. Everyone was. It was an all out war of stamina, skills and pure desire. The game has lost that edge. Where if you weren’t hurting, you weren’t playing. Those battle scars were earned. Period.
You had to really know how to play in the 90s. I see it when Team USA plays and gets beaten. The world is tougher on the court than we are right now. Sad.
As a millennial that really got into basketball probably in the early to mid 2010s, I was used to seeing the game pretty much in it's modern form. Recently I went back to see what was the skillset that made Jordan the greatest of all time. I was absolutely shocked to see that Jordan's bread and butter was pretty much back to the basket, bumping the defender and then hitting a turnaround jump shot. Kobe was pretty much the same. That of course was mixed with great driving, dunking, passing etc. It's just interesting to me that the mid range mastery is what made the greatest player of all time, and players these days are keying on either shooting the 3 or driving for a layup.
Not just soft they don't play defense so the scores are crazy high now. Back in the day, the scores were low like the high 80s and mid-90s but the defense players played made getting your shot a lot more work.
Another great take Sean. I need to hear your opinion on this... Do you feel the European style of play influenced a "softer" NBA? Or Do you feel the European style of play is a bi-product of rule changes and softer players?
The worst part is they have no fundamentals and everybody is at the 3 point line in the playoffs I seen a Miami player literally trip over the 3 point line when a loose ball was 3 ft from him. He acted like he was on the edge of the out of bounds line and the other team had 20 sec to come get ball bc he was wanting to shoot it. 90% of the players travel. I seen lebron in two different plays walk the entire length of the floor without dribbling the ball and the flops and crying and throwing your self in the ground like a kid is a joke. You a grown ass man. Todays era sucks
When I was a kid I remember hearing a lot of old guys complaining about changes and that in their day things were better. Now that I'm older I understand where this was coming from and it's when you don't have an option for your preferences. There isn't another big basketball league to watch and you're stuck with what seems permanent changes you don't like.
Do it bro, 20 min video of modern day vs back in the day. So many times while watching ball the last couple years. That some of these guys dominating today wouldn’t be $hit
My dad's been watching the NBA since Magic/Bird's era and he said the NBA probably got too physical in the 90s. But he's also become less of an NBA fan in recent years so I think the pendulum has swung too far towards softness.
NBA TODAY MAKES WAY LESS MONEY AND DRAW LESS VIEWS THAN THE 80's and 90's. I dont bother to watch todays BB. IT SIMPLY SUCKS. Until the game is placed as the battle royal for the chip, I wont bother to watch that crap.
It is. 4 players stand around the 3 point line . And they pass the ball around the perimeter and jack up the three. The players look the same and play the same.
The game used to feel more exciting to watch and I can't put my finger on it. The players as a whole are more skilled but it doesn't seem as fun, or am I missing something?
I've been a Chicago Bulls fan since their inception, 1966-67. I've played and watched a lot of basketball but as of today, I no longer watch the NBA! Forced shots, a disdain for offensive rebounds, shooting mostly 3's, not running a formal offense like the triple post, celebrating a dunk 2 minutes into a game, coaches not actually coaching, (they have become expensive "time out callers"), nonchalant defense, etc. This game used to be somewhat strategic, now it's like a gym class where the teacher rolls out a rack of basketballs and say pick teams and go! The NBA is now one giant "pick up," game with each player being an independent contractor, playing for his next contract! R.I.P NBA!
The game today makes you wanna watch Tom & Jerry cartoons. The 1980s and 1990s games makes you wanna stick it out and watch the whole season every year.
The rebounding stat and the assist stat are the 2 biggest overrated stats in the league. 4 offensive players are out at the 3 point line, the shot gets chucked up, clangs off the rim , and falls into the lap of one of the defense and he gets credit. No boxing out , no having to fight for the ball. A guy hands a ball to some one or passes it to him 5 feet away. That guy goes up for a three , makes it, and the other guy gets an assist. Ridiculous
Soft rules and shooting 3's with 29 seconds left on the shot clock is not worth watching. And the nba knows it. They allow traveling now to encourage player to get up in it.
started watching early 90’s, this is way better than the stagnant standing around offence that was run before, just waiting fir the big guys in the post to feed them for that running hook😂, it was physical but that doesn’t mean a good defense, players this era have to move there feet very well to defend and not easily hand check
Today's NBA ratings are at an all time low . People actually ran offensive set in the old school . They actually knew how to play basketball and every team did not play the same style . The Lakers ran the floor but the Celtics were basically half court . The bulls played a different game and they had rim protectors . Today if you beat your man it's a layup because the big man is 20bfeet from the rim .
@@saburrashid5566 makes it more challenging to defend since they bring the best rim protectors to go 20 ft out, since bigs now can really shoot it, it was just post up plays or transition back then, i saw utah consistently running plays and side actions, bulls got the triangle
@@marksines1246 nonsense when you are a big you negate your size advantage when you play on the perimeter . 7 foot but you shooting threes that's why the NBA sucks today . It is a three point contest . Nobody has a unique game everybody plays the same way . Dribble step back shoot a 3 that's not real basketball . Proof ? Ratings keep going lower and lower . Nobody hustles , boxes out or guards the ball and nobody can play the midrange game . The problem is they let a corny white man tell them to obey a computer how to play the game . That's why intelligent play is an afterthought . Nobody thinks the game anymore it's pathetic .
I was born in 81 so missed out on the Celtics and lakers, remember the bad boys and of course the Knicks, pacers, bulls of the east, great physical rivalries in the nineties, miss those days, haven't really watched basketball since
Riddle me this: how come it feels like modern players get a minor injury and are out for weeks if not months, collecting their pay-checks. While in the 80's where people played for peanuts in comparison and way more physical, you had no load management, no modern tech, how did people played more games?
Today's players can't compare to the older players. Compare a player like Ben Simmons to a player like Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons. When The Pistons played the Lakers in the NBA finals Thomas severely sprained his ankle. He was hellbent on playing the next day. It was painful to watch him run hard on his ankle. Back then players sacrificed their bodies. Nowadays a player stubs his toe and he's out for the season.
One huge difference is that all players are friendly. They all hang out together and party together. Back in the day that was unheard of. The other players were your enemy.
I'll tell you what Mr.David. set up a 3 game series with old school and New age NBA players.slap some mediocre rules and set em out on the floor. Should be epic.
The lack of passing is another issue that makes the game unwatchable. Next time you watch a game, take note how frequently the first recipient of a pass goes one on one as if he is the only player on the court.
The league is missing grit and passion. Shooting threes is in common with non physicality. It’s part of this soft era. That’s why I’ve always loved footwork and dribbling skills before 3’s.
I tried hard to like this new NBA too. But I've been "trying" for 10 years now. And I have yet to watch a full game. Even the highlights are boring to me now. Personally its just the same junk over and over again. I do miss the 90s NBA era too.

There's a reason that when knowledgeable basketball fans debate who the best 5 man team would be they always ask "which era rules are we playing by?"
If you don't play physical defense and get to travel with the ball it really changes the conversation.
Another great video!!!
Yea, today's game is garbage ball.
How you a millennial getting into basketball in the 2010's. So you just ain't watch basketball for the first part of your life?
@jonathanhighsmith9289 yea basketball wasn't big to me growing up. I played in leagues when I was a kid but never followed the NBA.
Not just soft they don't play defense so the scores are crazy high now. Back in the day, the scores were low like the high 80s and mid-90s but the defense players played made getting your shot a lot more work.
Spot on!
I miss the 2000s era Nba
This shit started in the 90's with Jordan. They had to make sure their cash cow didn't get injured.
Dude get beaten up by pistons, wtf are you talking about?
@@detectivemarkseven They started beating his ass in the 80's then he started crying to David Stern. 😭
AGREED...
1:50 dude can't help but laugh 😂
Season just started and Phoenix suns have Bradley Beal and Devin Booker out already
Exactly. What are these 2 meatheads already load managing for ?
Another great take Sean. I need to hear your opinion on this...
Do you feel the European style of play influenced a "softer" NBA?
Or
Do you feel the European style of play is a bi-product of rule changes and softer players?
If u watch euro ball , defensively it really isn’t soft . It’s always been more finesse that atheltic
They have been killing the game by continuously trying to make it a better family show.
I understand your feelings about today's game. Growing up I think I would like the late 90s/2000s maybe pre Warriors era
That why I play with classic on 2k I hate how they make the classic Legends weak and scared to attack the basket and slow. I miss Live 97
soft like Charmin as Kobe would say.
Don't get how players today think the best to play couldn't play today?
That makes zero sense.
White Chocolate is out of his mind. Oscar Robertson could absolutely play today and be great. Come on, man.
Todays NBA is like watching paint dry.
✅😄😄😄
I like Tom & Jerry as much as 90's NBA ... Top cartoon & top NBA
I haven't watch 1 NBA game in 15 years. No way I'm paying to support a bunch of soft babies
NBA today is so much hawt garbage.
then :you gotta get stronger young fella.
Now: Its ok to be weak young fella.
Simmons was never Broke, his Dad was one of the best players of all time in Australia's NBL
In 20 years, they're gonna be talking about how tough Draymond was.
started watching early 90’s, this is way better than the stagnant standing around offence that was run before, just waiting fir the big guys in the post to feed them for that running hook😂, it was physical but that doesn’t mean a good defense, players this era have to move there feet very well to defend and not easily hand check
The euro step is simply traveling giving the offensive players the edge Oscar would kick ass just like he did in his area
And euro step is easier to stop of you're a good to great defensive player than trying to stop someone using hop step.
Euro step is not always a travel, but most of the time it is in the NBA.
I was born in 81 so missed out on the Celtics and lakers, remember the bad boys and of course the Knicks, pacers, bulls of the east, great physical rivalries in the nineties, miss those days, haven't really watched basketball since
I suggest dunks become 3 points and behind the line 2 points.
This is a big reason why the regular season has become so mundane and hard to watch.
haven't watched the nba since 2003.. nothing compares to 90s basketball
I feel you
Tottaly agree with you view
They have girls in them and not a Viking in them as men
This Why NBA's Rating At All Time Low
No soft players on that BTM intro no doubt
Not many championships in that intro either.
Riddle me this: how come it feels like modern players get a minor injury and are out for weeks if not months, collecting their pay-checks.
While in the 80's where people played for peanuts in comparison and way more physical, you had no load management, no modern tech, how did people played more games?
I remember watching A.I. wanting to have that dog, even watching the commercials of his shoes wiht the injuries he had, those were badges of honor...
ive been saying this for over a decade now, take away the three point shot, or, or, let them be physical again.
Today's players can't compare to the older players. Compare a player like Ben Simmons to a
player like Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons. When The Pistons played the Lakers in the NBA
finals Thomas severely sprained his ankle. He was hellbent on playing the next day. It was painful
to watch him run hard on his ankle. Back then players sacrificed their bodies. Nowadays a player
stubs his toe and he's out for the season.
“Without anymore blah blah” lol I feel like you haven’t said that in a long time
Adam Silver has ruined the NBA!
The lack of passing is another issue that makes the game unwatchable. Next time you watch a game, take note how frequently the first recipient of a pass goes one on one as if he is the only player on the court.
Agree completely ..the product has changed ...not as entertaining
It's not only the rules that made players soft. It's the money. They make too much, too fast. They don't have to work for it anymore.
The game has become younger so the level of mental maturity and competitive mindset has changed drastically. IMHO
REAL TALK..!
