As a Chinese, I use Wechat, Skype, Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram. Personally, I think Wechat is way better than the rest.
Wechat is basically an integration of whatsapp\skype\instagram\paypel\booking.com as Schrodinger‘s Cat said.

Hey! I am from India and I must clarify that we don't really use WeChat in India. But yes, many people had downloaded it at some point, but that's only because they were curious and wanted to try out something other than WhatsApp. It was a phenomenon that lasted here for a few months, tops, and never for anything other than chatting alone.

Been a subscriber for a little while now, and I must say, I wish I had known about your channel years ago. I've just bought Conquering Southern China on Vimeo, and I must say it's bloody brilliant. Really looking forward to Conquering Northern China.
Having traveled in most of Thailand, I've met a lot of Chinese tourist, and I will not lie, they didn't give me a very good impression of China.
I'm glad I stumbled upon, serpentza, laowhy86 and ADVCina, you have really opened my eyes about China in a way I never thought possible.
Now I'm planning to tour China sometime in the future when my studies allow me.
I've always had a vision to move to Asia , Thailand has always been my first pick, now I'll see when I have been to China. When I eventually get there, I'll buy the whole crew a round of beers if you'll have me.
Just want to say thanks for the premium content.

I understand the invasive part of Wechat. I installed it to follow your great adventure, and it found all the Chinese engineers I had worked with on components made in China at an old job. All of a sudden my address book was full of old friends in China and in America working for Chinese companies. It does have a nice feature set, but it scares me.

When my wife is in China we use WeChat to stay in touch. We use the video calls. Sometimes during holidays there is too much traffic to maintain a video call. So, we have to resort to a voice call to communicate. Keep in mind depending on daylights saving time she can be 13 or 14 hours ahead. Timing of calls becomes important.

When I talk to my friends in China on QQ by voice messages, once I find out that they're in a suitable environment and likely having nothing to do, I will switch to a phone call over PSTN (not VoIP) immediately, because mobile service providers prioritize voice call traffic making it more stable and realible, also, by doing a instant voice call, you both will be streaming each others' voice, instead of recording, sending, and listening which is a waste of time.

I have a WeChat account here in the US to keep in touch with my Chinese friends here in America. It isn't hooked into any bank info. I just use the messenger and the Discover parts. In some ways I find it to be much better then Facebook. But one irritating problem is when I video call I think because I use a Android tablet. Either I am upside down or the other party is. I don't read Chinese so i am sure there are many other functions that i am not using. Thanks, for the video.

Hey, I like your videos which introduce China to TH-camrs. Just a quiet comments that wechat wasn't released because of Google was banned. Tencent, owener of Wechat, released the instant messager QICQ (then was renamed QQ) in 1999. Later, It dominated almost every PC and mobile phoness before Andoid was released. Wechat was a 'simplified' version of QQ, aiming for more efficient messenging. Even if Tencent didn't release wechat, QQ might have domated all the Android phones and IPHONE today. Thx for your video!

Excellent video, as usual. I just want to point out that as useful as WeChat is, you can only pay your utilities if you live in a 1st or 2nd tier city. This doesn't work in 3rd tier cities like where I lived. But the other features work pretty well. 3rd-party apps that are connected to WeChat, only work in Chinese so you need to either go through a tutorial to set up WeChat Pay or learn to read Chinese characters.

as it is mentioned in one of their other vids, there is no privacy in China, at least yet while its government is still dictated by one party. And Chinese parents never knock on the door when they enter their kids room. So I guess this No privacy thing is really rooted in our culture.

I work for a small company, with half our people in the US and the rest in China. We use WeChat conference calling for a lot of our meetings. One cool thing about it is that any conference attendee can add video when needed - one at a time of course. It also has text translation built-in, which is a total lifesaver for a non-chinese-speaker like me.

      to dank memes:
First of all if you don't agree with me then that makes me retarded? what kind of logic is that? Also why would a 200 billion dollar company risk their reputation to take two expats money? or anyone's? Sure they can take everyone's money, make some more billions at once and never be able to make any more again. Or they can keep their reputation, invest the money that people have put into wechat, and make millions of interests a week like a bank. Chinese corporations maybe evil or immoral, but they're not stupid, like you

Sure mistakes happen much more often than in the west, but it's just China, I assume they know the risks when they choose to live there, the corporations will never purposefully steal users money because that's just shortsighted. Also I'm Chinese born and raise there, currently in Europe studying which is why I have access to youtube and google etc. I hate the Chinese government too but to defect them people have to treat them like a twisted chess master rather than a simple minded bully.

points are true and people have to know facebook also have all kinds of access to your info as Wechat has if you give the permission (most people do give the permission). Wechat get those and make your life easier, and facebook doing all "do you know someone someone?", "do you want to post your pictures just taken?", "have you seen someone's comment on something something?". Personally that kind of messages annoys me a lot

Yeah sadly you dont really have a choice of which one you like the most. It is just a matter of which one is used the most.

before wechat pay, there was only alipay, it is a must for online shopping, but wechat is just too convenient, it is better to use one app for everything, people choose what is most handy

This is so funny, because C-Milk pointed out how advanced he though China was because of this!! But At this point in the US (2016) we already had cashapp, Venmo and PayPal. That using your phone to pay I know for a fact started in 2012 (my bestfriend was the only person I knew who did it and he was obsessed) with Google Pay, albeit at that time it wasn’t that popular. Once 2015 came around I’d say 30 - 50% of businesses were able to take ApplePay or competing software.

微信 and QQi are great. Both have language translate and is definitely the best way of connecting with Chinese people.Maybe it's just me but have found the most sincere and genuine people on there.
Many will complain about security as they are Chinese apps but they put a lot of western apps to shame.
Tencent cloud storage is also cool. Loads of space!

    • @Mendaz
      @Mendaz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

max miser QQi is so outdated compared to the standard QQ app that I had to give up on it. QQ just looks so much better and has so many more features compared to QQi.

In the States at least the facebook app does a lot of these things. You can make payments, send messages, and a few other things. Also, we have a few other payment apps that can hook right up to your bank account. I have a few friends that I hang out with regularly but don't have their number, I just make calls through facebook and send messages.

    I love Wechat so much
    It's so powerful
I used to think it's just another QQ(A social platform like messenger but I would say it's far more better[I know "far more better"is wrong in grammar] than messenger) we use in china

Although QQ and WeChat are both owned by Tencent, they do not share the servers. For instance in US, WeChat servers are "far more better" than QQ but in China they r the same. Not sure if QQ even have a server in US since the ping to QQ server is 200ms+

This is driving me crazy. If you search "does china have phone sercice or only internet" and no information shows up. I don't know how to search it. Im pretty sure they said phone companies there only provide mobile internet there and everyone only uses apps. I can't find any info 😭😭😭

  • @ericwong2571

Um, the USA has Venmo, which does have connections to one's own bank account. So I doubt most Westerners would have a significant issue as you described.
