  • Our current democratic system is like a twentieth-century computer trying to run twenty-first century programmes. We need to upgrade our system, drawing on our untapped abilities as citizens. Things like citizens’ assemblies and crowdsourcing laws are the way of the future - mechanisms that allow us, as ordinary individuals, to step up and take a much more direct role in discussing the issues and shaping the big political decisions that affect our lives. Max Rashbrooke is the J. D. Stout Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington, and has written extensively on issues of economic inequality and democratic renewal. The author of multiple books, including Government for the Public Good: The Surprising Science of Large-Scale Collective Action, he is a regular commentator in domestic and international media. You can find him at maxrashbrooke.org.nz and @MaxRashbrooke on Twitter. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. His plan to draw up 100 citizens that perfectly represent the public according to some third party presumably chosen by the government just sounds like extra steps to get representatives that are even less connected to the people.

      Agreed. The selection process of those 100 would never be completely transparent. You could try completely random, but even then: who controls the computer program that spits out the people? Google? I think these ideas are good starters but as they stand, they're doomed from the start

      Catherine the great had a lot of conversations with enlightenment thinkers, Diderot, Rousseau, Voltaire and Montesquieu,... and when Catherine became Czar, she brought together the nobility, the mercantile class and the peasantry. The short of it… the first gathering ended in a draw, mainly because the peasantry did not want political ‘voice’ as much as they wanted life’s basic necessities... and the nobility and the rich merchants, knew that any form of equalization was not to their advantage , and did their damnedest to subvert the process, which they accomplished.
      Every institution and institutional reform is subject to human behavior. Robert Sapolsky’s lectures on neuroendocrinology and his book, Behave, is a must study before bringing Them together with Us!
      Otherwise it’s a waste of time and resources...
      “The spirit of the laws “
      The soul taste so much delight in dominating other souls, even those who love, the good love themselves so strongly, that there is no one who is not so unfortunate as to still have reason to doubt his own good intentions, and in truth, our actions depend on so many things, that it is 1000 times easier to do good, then to do it well. - Montesquieu 6.28. 41. In an ideal world I believe that this system may perhaps work. However we do not live in an ideal world and that puts severe limits on what is realistic. Our world is becoming increasingly complex so that it becomes impossible for an individual to have enough knowledge about every topic to make an objective decision. The big Problems in our world have become so complex that oftentimes their solutions require concessions in the short run to make things better in the long run. Making those kinds of decisions is something that humans inherently aren't prepared for unless specifically trained for. That's why I think it is more sensible to have experts in charge instead of having democratic votes on topics.
    I agree that something needs to change about the current way we do politics, but this isn't the solution I'd go for. It is even more vulnerable to failure and manipulation than our current system.

    • @horrorhotel1999

      @Gee Santini Being an expert in one particular field doesn't make you capable of making good decisions in others. Sure, certain ways to approach problems might carry over into different fields, but you will rarely make a sensible decision unless you dedicate time to fully understanding a problem. Only experts on the particular topic should be able to influence decision making or policy.
      The Problem really is: who gets to select these experts so that they are actually unbiased?

    Firstly, I know of no country in the world that operates under an real democratic system. At best, those that claim to be democracies are elected oligarchies. Secondly, the rich have accumulated most of the power and most of the money in the world and are not to give it up without a fight. People love to flap their gums about what needs to change but here's the thing, it won't without a great deal of death and suffering. To the rich, too much is never enough and you cannot get rid of that mind set without removing the people who cling to it.

      @horrorhotel1999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but this is not the solution. If you have a majority vote on issues that only impact minorities it will almost always be to their detriment if anyone else has to make concessions. These days problems have become so complex that they need a very detailed knowledge of context and background to come up with an actually useful solution. You need to be an expert on the topic, and that is something that by definition doesn't apply to the masses.

    Democracy does not guarantee equality of conditions. It only guarantees equality of opportunity.

    • @leroyjenkins4811
      @leroyjenkins4811 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m right there with you in agreement. Democracy promotes equal opportunities. You’re right. It does not guarantee equality of outcomes.
      Democracy does not need to be revamped. We need enforce, uphold, and defend the policies we already have in place. This needs to be done equally and everyone needs to be held accountable to the exact same standard. Especially our politicians. If you’re a politician, you should be held to a higher standard and your behavior needs to be beyond reproach. In the US, some of our politicians are corrupt (Democrats) and want to fundamentally destroy our constitution.
      Besides, trying to make sure equality of outcomes comes about doesn’t coincide with human nature. Not everyone will be a doctor. Not everyone will be a lawyer. Not everyone will be a president. It is your responsibility as a human being, responsible for their own life, to get in where you fit in and figure out what you’re going to do to make a living. It’s not the responsibility of ANY government to do this for you.

      Cody Berrier
      You are right. To a degree. Democracy can lead to mob rule. Tyranny through votes.
      But the Government of the US (and most democratic countries) is not a pure democracy. It’s a Constitutional Republic with a representative democracy for the sake convenience.
      The world hasn’t t seen pure democracy since the Greeks. In a pure democracy, citizens can vote on anything. Anything! Case in point: Socrates was made to drink hemlock and executed for the charge of “corrupting Greek youth with his dangerous ideas”. In a Constitutional Republic, where church and state are separate as well as having protected free speech, government executing someone over such a charge is unheard of. In a Constitutional Republic, there are rules, policies, and procedures kept in check by the different branches of government. In the US we have the people first, then the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government to make sure one branch doesn’t end up with more power than the other.
      Before you start talking about democracy, please go somewhere and learn the different forms of government that have been used through history. Your explanation is an oversimplification. My guess is that you don’t actually know the various systems of different governments.
      Do you know what any of these terms mean?
      1. Constitutional republic
      2. Anarchy
      3. Colonialism
      4. Communism
      5. Socialism
      6. Federalism
      7. Meritocracy
      8. Oligarchy
      9. Republicanism
      10. Monarchy
      11. Theocracy
      These are just a few. When you have a thorough understanding of various governments, get back to me. Your ignorance is showing.

    You can't trust polling companies, and you can't base this on only 100 people. That is not even close to a representative in a country of 350 million. That might be a good number for 100,000. But no more. And then you're going to train them with which teachers? Right or Left or Centrist ideologically? Your citizen council happens already in the US. They are called city council meetings; few show up for them. They take to much time and effort for anyone with a job. That is why representatives are elected in the first place. For the USA, our founders are smarter than you. They knew that man is at its essential self is greedy. They based our system on that basis. Like it or not, that is man's nature. He will do what is best for him. There are a few who will sacrifice for others, but few, not most. You can not base a system based on how the minority will react. So thank you for your input, but you need to go back to studying this.

The county should take care of county- wide problems, not the state. The state should deal with the state's challenges, not the federal government. The federal government should provide military protection to all the states and a currency for internal & foreign commerce, and that's all. If people are made responsible at the local level for local issues, they have to communicate & work together & compromise for the good of the community, people you are going to be living next to for a long time & need to get along with. This builds trust in one's neighbors, which is the foundation of a cooperative & stable society. Bring decision-making down to the local level as much as possible. That's the way to turn around & simplify a society that has become so complex as to be inhumane & unlivable.

    His plans does not address the corruption exercised by the money powers over the media and professional politicians.
    “When a government is dependent upon bankers for money, they and not the leaders of the government control the situation, since the hand that gives is above the hand that takes… Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain.” - Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France, 1815
    A possible solution : “The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credits needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers. By the adoption of these principles, the taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest. Money will cease to be master and become the servant of humanity.” -Abraham Lincoln NOW WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY, WHY NOT USE SOME GOOD SENSE, AND USE IT TO BENEFIT AS ALL ?

    You miss an important point. Coalition is the best way to have a large section of the population’s interests served. If you always vote by majority, the majority will run away with all power. Direct Democracy is not capable to reach coalition decisions that do something for all members of the coalition. Direct Democracy lacks the coalition deal making capability. To negotiate a deal that is somewhat attractive for many members of the coalition.

    • @MangezDesPommes
      @MangezDesPommes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's just untrue, most European countries run on direct democracy and manage just fine coalition making. It's almost as if it's really hard to conceive and make democracy work with only two political parties...

    • @benheideveld4617
      @benheideveld4617 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangezDesPommes Direct Democracy is that voters decide on every item by itself. A referendum on every decision. That is not a matter of opinion, it is the definition of direct democracy. All European countries have parliaments, that is called representative democracy. Rashbrooke suggests a people’s parliament with off the street selected members. Either they decide on a per issue basis, which overrepresents a simple majority, or they negotiate this one goes our way and that one goes your way. That is coalition and represents a larger section of the electorate. But then you have recreated the parliamentary democracy, with off the street people.

    I dont like your emphasis on technology - community involvment yes - and your way of questioning democracy - yes democracy is a delicate system that requires on going maintenance otherwise we get more oligarchy like our present society.
    What you leave out is the causes of present society/democracy disfunction.
    This is all to do with Davos, the few people who own the commercial world - wealthy families, corporations, private banks - who wish to 'reset' the world with according to 'their wishes' a feudal slavery system.
    The 99% must reject that Davos system absolutely. Here you have a group of people who are mainly responsible for the present disfunction, who's value system is profit at any cost, human life and the planet are ignored or at best on the extreme fringe.
    There are economic/ecology systems that will provide the world with 'democracy' that we all must demand, and yes representative democracy is important but so is community involvment and democracy at every level, such as democratic workplaces for example, public central banks, science and putting humans and planet first.
    A common society agreement on the value system we must pursue and not the political/economic strangle hold of the wealthy and corporates.
