    Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2020 Toyota Highlander is one of them. The Toyota Highlander is a perpetually strong selling midsize 3-row SUV. In this review we see how well the 2020 Highlander performs in its prime role as a family vehicle.
    Here’s our test car’s information explosion:
    Information Explosion
    2020 Toyota Highlander
    3.5L V6
    295hp, 263 lb-ft
    8-Speed Automatic Transmission
    All-Wheel Drive
    (20city/27hwy)
    Base: $35,720 L Trim
    As-Tested: $51,112 Platinum V6
    During our review of this 2020 Toyota Highlander we examined a range of practical details; passenger space, cargo space, Entune infotainment, handling, steering, engine and transmission performance, overall refinement, and price. We also explore the 2020 Highlanders seat comfort, how easy it is to install a child seat, 3rd row comfort, and how easy it is for our daughter to climb aboard. How did it go? Watch and see. #MicahDrives

    It was about time for Toyota to introduce a new generation of their long-in-the-tooth Highlander. And on some points the 2020 version is impressive. But in terms of "family friendliness" is concerned, that depends on what comprises a "family." Toyota added almost 3" to the length of the 2020 Highlander bringing it to 195" long. Only an inch or two shorter than most 3 row rivals. But the 3rd row is a cruel joke, even compared to other 3 row crossovers, much less minivans. Toyota says the third row has 27.7" of 3rd row legroom. That's a full 2" less than the infamously cramped Mazda CX-9. A Mustang's back seat has 30" of rear seat legroom.Virtually all rivals offer more than 31" in the third row. A KIA Sorento, for example, is half a foot shorter than the Highlander and offers 31.7".
    But the joke doesn't end there. Toyota claims the Highlander seats up to 8 passengers (with a second row bench seat) and 7 passengers with captain chairs in the second row. But those numbers assume that the third row's three seat belts mean three human beings of any size can be crammed back there. And that is simply ridiculous.
    Bottom line. The Highlander is a four or five person midsize crossover. Any "family" whose members are all over 4 and a half feet tall will find the Highlander's third row is useless.

      I agree. The Highlander Hybrid is very attractive on paper but in real life I found that it's just way too small.

    I’m not sure why, but I really just don’t care for Toyota’s. I think it might be because their technology hasn’t been that up to date. Although I’m very happy that they included standard driver assist features as I was absolutely appalled that the Acadia didn’t come with them.

      I find it to have much better styling and interior quality than recent Highlanders. I expect it to have bulletproof reliability as usual. I believe statistically there is no other Toyota or Lexus model that can top the Highlander for durability. It's up there with the Avalon and Land Cruiser. I know a few people happily driving early 00s Highlanders.

    • @bradleyscarreviews
      @bradleyscarreviews 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kia telluride and palisade, better interior, exterior, luxury, and reliability. Older Toyota were bulletproof, but now, Kia and Hyundai, and let’s not forget genesis, took over that. The new highlander is another lifted rav4 that is unreliable. BORING!!!

    • @JoeE.
      @JoeE. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like the exterior design which makes it unique compared to the generic squared off design of the rest of the competition. The interior also looks good but how to fold the seats in the second and third row seats are not as good as the ones found on the Pathfinder and QX60.

    So Micah we need to have this discussion. Normally I only watch car review videos for cars that I am either researching for myself or a friend and of course I have to watch Brian and Nick's Regular Car Reviews as their writing just makes me laugh regardless of what they are testing. Now back to your up and coming channel; I find the "family" aspect of your reviews having your wonderfully beautiful wife and super cute daughter with you has hooked me big time. So no, not at all shopping SUVs at all as I kind of hate them but I really really enjoy your videos. Well here I am watching this highly mundane SUV that I would never consider personally and being highly entertained. Keep up the great work here guys and thank you for the really awesome content. Thank you! I see 50k coming soon it looks like. Let's spread the word... (Okay confession time, I am SUPER jelly about your flying. Always been into aircraft, flying and aerospace. Few a bunch of RC planes etc but not the real thing yet. So I really dig your helicopter trips too.) P.S. I just caught myself high fiveing you on my monitor at the end there, lol.

    I think I've warmed up to the styling of this car. In a lot of ways I kinda find it under styled compared to the last generation but I still find the previous highlander more attractive 🤷🏿‍♀️. Not really sure what emotion one is expecting to feel from a minivan sized family vehicle? As long as it's comfortable it should be fine

    Love these videos. Great I sight from the family. The seats are very confusing. Half elbow ratings all around for this. $51k plus for a product that has a pretty useless third row and doesnt come close to a Telluride/Palisade for $48k. For being the newest product in the segment, it needed to be better in my opinion. Also hate the Supra rear fenders glued on here. Not a fan of the looks

    • @alwaysiyi272
      @alwaysiyi272 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The elbow ratings are just for fun it all depends on the length of your arms, and the 3rd row isn't useless, I fit in there and I'm 5,11 so I'm definitely not a short person, but this is just my opinion, I think its styled really well too

    Great review! But I have two things that bother me about the Highlander. I'm afraid that irregularly shaped infotainment center would drive me nuts...I really dislike an oddly shaped dash because I enjoy symmetry. Also that weird hump over the rear door is going to be an immediate magnet for parking lot dings. The Toyota/Lexus styling language to me seems like they are trying too hard to be different. Don't even get me started on the Lexus spindle grilles! But hey, that's just me.

    Just bought an XLE Highlander. Love it. We thought that was the best trim level for us because of the mix of amenities we wanted and price. I might look at the Lexus if I were going to get the Platinum as the extra goodies are around 10k. But, I wanted the simplicity and economy of a reliable and relatively reasonably priced vehicle.Wife insisted on the moon dust or moon stone color as well.Worth 400.00.

    A note about your complaint at 3:00 that a child would have trouble reaching up to use the latch on top of the 2nd row seat to fold and slide forward to gain access to the third row. The same function can also be done by pulling up on the handle that is used to recline the seat. When you're not sitting in the seat and pushing it back in order to recline the seat will fold and slide forward the same as the top latch. A child would be able to reach this no problem.

      They’re both great cars. I think the telluride is a better car but I also prefer the smaller size of the highlander.

      Sanju2 you forgot these cars are new. We don’t know the reliability yet. My moms sx prestige telluride has 38,000 miles, still running strong. She said the highlander is still boring and I agree.

    Surprised with all the exterior styling going on, they didn't do something more creative with daytime running lights.

    This highlander is way better than the last gen. It looks better and the grill isn’t as big which is nice

    I certainly like the styling of the highlander the best in this segment, if I think any vehicle in this segment is overstyled its the Palisade to me and I love the interior and it seems it is even a better deal than the GMC Acadia. I think I might even trade in my Telluride which sounds crazy or just get both of them. I also want to add that in most cases the 3rd row is usually flipped down 80% of the time at least that was how it was for my old Honda Pilot we only put it up in case of an emergency and everyone is complaining about the 50k but the Ford Explorer is almost 60k, the Honda POilot which is older is right around 50k too, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are like 2k dollars from being 50k heck even the GMC Acadia Denali is 70k which is smaller and less luxurious than this so I think it is priced right

      Iboy Dafreshest how is a GMC Acadia Denali 70K? That’s what a Yukon Denali costs.

    I thought the same thing about the air conditioning at first (that it doesn't work) but if you turn the recycle air button on, and fan up full blast with the air being directed to just one vent, either the windshield or the forward facing (face) vents, it works much better. Still doesn't cool off as quickly when it's hot outside....takes longer than most other SUV's I've driven.
