  • You don’t have to be an opera singer to reap the benefits of Appoggio in your singing. And don’t worry, singing with appoggio won't make you sound like an opera singer if that’s not your bag. It WILL bring you more freedom and power through stabling your breath support in each phrase. And THAT is what you want no matter what genre you sing.

    I cannot tell you how many books and videos I've watched over the last 15 years. Even Catherine Sadolin doesn't explain technique this well. I never truly understood the need to push down and out beyond taking the inhale. I didn't realize it was to be done while singing too. Most teachers just say to keep the ribs out and pull the stomach inward to produce sound. Wow. Thank you for the video.

      @@yararinamiil The stomach will naturally shrink as you lose breath. You shouldn't fight that, as it's simply your lungs losing volume. Fighting it by distending the belly will only introduce tension. The "lean" in this case simply refers to regulating the rate as which you lose breath, otherwise you'll collapse prematurely or expel breath too fast.

    This video SAVED MY VOICE ! No joke. I'm so grateful to have found Arden's video. Even speaking has become difficult because I wasn't getting enough air, which made me more tense, tightening my throat, while squeezing in the diaphragm, instead of leaning out, expanding the lungs and being reminded to breathe into the back. I haven't been able to keep up with my yoga practice, which helped expand my lung capacity, but with this technique I can still access the support to sing free and relaxed.

    Hi, thank you for sharing the knowledge. I have a question I want to ask.
    When I do lip trills my stomach and back begin to expand until they reach their fullest capacity(sometimes I expand untill I feel like my stomach wants to explode is it wrong to do that?) but seconds later while I'm still doing my lip trill my stomach starts to deflate however I still feel like I'm flexing my stomach and trying to keep the support but my stomach isn't expanding.
    So, my question is I'm confused does lean(support) mean having a big expanded flexing stomach when I sing or does it mean the stomach is supposed to deflate by letting go air and maintaining the flex of the mucles ?

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio

      Hi Tammy. You have to let go of your support (your "lean") when you breathe. The lean is to engage support so you can sing efficiently. You don't do it on the inhale. You have to let it go precisely because if you don't, then you will feel how you're feeling with no room for the inhale.

    I think you have explained a great thing.But the only thing we can do is take air inside or feel our belly filling up while breathing in. But how can we target on particular muscles while breathing? What do you mean by leaning? Will our belly keep filling or shrink while leaning? I couldn't make it out. Thanks for reply in advance.

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio

      So, you're not breathing from your side/waist. When I have my hands on my obliques, it's to demonstrate engaging those muscles when you phonate. Not using them to have anything to do with the inhale.

      Hiss, while pushing from the lower abdomen. You should feel your stomach moving out slightly towards your hand. When you feel your diaphragm naturally start to pull in. Don't try to stop it, because that will cause tension. just lightly push back to slow the process. As you practice, try to make this period longer.

      Hi Marc, thanks for asking. The problem is probably that you are pushing instead of leaning. Notice in the video I never use the word push, I always use the word lean. There’s a big difference between gently leaning on the muscles of support and pushing down on them. You are probably bearing down too forcefully and it’s causing tension in the throat/neck in the same way it would if you were really constipated and struggling to push out a bowel movement (pardon the graphic analogy). Just gently flex the muscles rather then forcibly bear down on them. Hope this helps!

    The only thing I dont understand is leaning action. I understand that it's a conscious action that we can do. But is it progressively, gradually pushing out lower part of mentioned areas? Like do we actually make them stick out more and more as the phrase goes by? Or what happens?

      I just want to understand this thing, what is this leaning? That's the one thing im trying to wrap my head around. Is it constant expansion action? Or is it just a feeling of it happening so when in reality that's not what's happening?

      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gediminas, thanks for writing. We don't want to make our abdominals stick out more, but we do gradually and gently flex into them more the longer the phrase goes or the higher the pitch goes. I have another video of me working on this with a student that I think will help you understand it better. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/mM4QPXx_nHU/w-d-xo.html

    what your explaining makes anatomically no sence. contraction of the breathing muscles is what initiates the exhalation in the first place.
    no breathing muscles contraction = no exhalation.
    Some of those muscles may be at rest, but not contracting any of the breathing muscles, or how you explain it, make them expand even further, and at the same time have breath flowing out of your body is not possible.
    Appoggio means to delay the contraction of your breathing muscles, not preventing their contraction at all. I think thats what you are trying to get at with the mental model of "leaning out", but because you failed to make said point clear it can be confusing, at least it was for me, considering your videos were the first to introduce me to the concept of appoggio.

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for you thoughts. My experience as a teacher has taught me that words really matter when directing singers in how to use their body for support. Telling singers to contract the muscles of their support usually causes them to push inwards and upwards which completely destabilizes the diaphragm by pushing it up too quickly and too forcefully which, in turn pushes way too much air out so singers no longer have the correct amount of sub-glottal pressure to phonate effectively. I've seen that using the word "flex" helps singers to engage the muscles of support in a much more effective way. I understand that it's semantics, and semantics are not the same as anatomy, but this is a way I have found to help singers use the anatomy in the most effective way.

    • @Geraet
      @Geraet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio Yes I understand, I think this is especially true, since singing includes using very subtle muscles. I am just a different kind of student, I wanna know exactly whats going on in theory and than build awareness of these things going on in my body. I think this is the most effective way in the long term, because in being aware of the things lies better troubleshooting. So taking these semantics literally can lead to confusion so I think this is just something that should be clarified, but your primarily positive feedback shows that most people get your point. Keep on doing good work!

    Your videos are so helpful! It’s interesting you brought up a corset. I’m currently learning how to support correctly after years of bad habits in operatic singing. I struggle with maintaining posture and openness in my rib cage. I have vest that corrects my posture, and I’ve found that I feel my muscles more engaged when I sing while wearing it, but I’m not sure if I’m feeling support correctly because I was never taught how to do so correctly. Is this something I should practice with the vest or no?

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jessica, thanks for reaching out. So if the vest helps you maintain an open posture then I think it would be good to practice with because a collapsed or "shortened" posture will sabotage good support - it makes it a lot harder to do. The only thing would caution you about is to not get too reliant on the vest. You want to wear the vest for a bit, then take it off to allow your body to learn the new muscle memory of doing the new lengthened posture without relying on the vest to put you there. If all you ever do is wear the vest then I worry you become reliant on it and will not be able to be in length when you take it off. So do a vocal exercise with it on, then take it off and do the exact same exercise right away with it off and try to bring your awareness to being in your body in the exact same way as when it was on. Then put it back on for the next exercise and then take it off and do the same exercise again up the scale. So essentially you are training a new muscle memory. You're feeling the correct alignment of your body and sensation of appoggio when you have the vest on, then you take it off and do your best to recreate the same alignment and support. Make sense? Also, on a totally different subject, I've got a facebook group I want to invite you to join. It's for serious singers like you who want to explore new ways of up-leveling the trajectory of your singing to have more success in your career. Click here to join: facebook.com/groups/ProSingerSuccessCollective/ Hope to see you in the group!! xo

    • @jessicazeller8060
      @jessicazeller8060 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arden Kaywin Vocal Studio Thank you so much! Yes, I am concerned about becoming too reliant on it. It seems now (hopefully just because of a lack of practice/muscle memory and nothing I can’t control) that I cannot properly support and achieve the sound I want without external resistance, such as the vest or a wall when I stand against it. Learned that trick this summer at an artist program I attended and that helps me be cognizant of my posture.
      I joined the group! Thank you for the invite!

      Yes it can be normal for some people because when you do the support correctly, your diaphragm will stay low and move slowly which means it's staying down there leaning on your stomach and for some people can cause more gurgles or even burps then normal.

      Hi Zen Master, thanks for reaching out for clarity. I'm glad you did because no, it does not mean that I want you to push your stomach out. First, let get clear that it's not about your belly, it's about specific muscles around it. Focus on your obliques, that's a good place to start. If you don't know where they are, go on google to find a good anatomy diagram so you can see. Put the palms of your hands on your obliques and then when you hiss, focus on gently flexing these muscles. It's a feeling of leaning on or sending these muscles down and away from your body rather then pushing your front belly forward or out where your bellybutton is. Hope this helps!

      No, that's a contraction. What I want you to feel goes in the opposite direction and is more like a flex then a contraction of the abdominals. Check out this video, I think you'll understand better after watching this: th-cam.com/video/mM4QPXx_nHU/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Arden, like the person who asked the question I have seen so many videos by so many different people apparently trying their best to explain proper breath support to me. That being said, you are the only one who was actually able to make me understand what it is supposed to be. Your videos are the absolute best! Thank you so so much!!

      You are SO welcome! It means a lot that my method resonates with you. I know it's been a while since you initially commented, but I wanted to circle back because I'm hosting a 5 Day FREE Vocal Workshop from 6/17/24 - 6/21/24......wasn't sure if you'd heard. But if you resonated with this video, come!! I'm gonna be teaching a ton of tools on finding consistency, breath support the mind/body connection, breaking through to the next level and it's all interactive with live coaching and Q&A... Hi Marie, thanks for writing to get some clarity. The idea of the "lean" is really just a way of thinking about how you use the muscles of support so that you don't push or contract them inwards an overly forceful way. We don't want to whack those muscles, we want to gently lean out into them. Check out the second tip in this video, it comes about half way through, because I talk about the difference between flexing into the support vs contracting. Maybe this will help you better understand as another means to getting to the "lean". th-cam.com/video/z1Tj72oNsrY/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Arden. When I think of expand, my upper abs become tense. How do I relax my upper abs?

      Hi Jaidee Sky, thanks for the kind words. Yes! I have a studio of private students that I work with in my studio in L.A. or online via Skype/FaceTime. If you're interested in working with me, you can get some more information here: www.ardenkaywinvocalstudio.com/voice-lessons/
