This technique is a huge breakthrough to me … i have watched hundreds of TH-cam videos to learn singing , none of them have ever taught us this breathing technique… thank you so so much! Words cannot express my gratitude. I m a worship vocalist and I think you are God-sent! May God bless you!
Great! Additionally it is helpful to remember that the mechanism that gets the vocal cords to vibrate is NOT air, but electrical impulses from the brain. Knowing that will revolutionise the way that students think about the voice and make it even more easy to do the inhale-inhale that you talk about.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for sharing this visualization! I’ve been trying to correctly understand breath support for so long. I came across this video and within minutes of applying it to my singing I’ve noticed a HUGE change!! Seriously, thank you, so much! Definitely will be watching more of your videos!

I have been watching voice instruction videos on TH-cam for 2 years now and this video just made so many things click for me that I was missing. So happy I found your page!
I've watched probably hundreds of singing videos and this is the first time I've had advice give me significant and instant results. Thank you so much!
Brilliant, you are actually knowledgeable and know how to teach, Arden! I've watched the video where you teach a guy not to push in and this one and I've had significant result for the first time ever! Best of luck to you xx
My father told me this when I was a kid. And I often feel it! I use so little breath and it feels like I'm breathing in through my nose as the sound is coming out of my mouth. Your hand gesture at 8:20 is exactly what it feels like to me, that the air is coming in through my nose as I sing. Funnily enough (I just tried it) I can even feel this with my mouth closed while humming! I've never thought about the abdomen before but then I never ever understood how to feel the support until yesterday when I saw your videos for the first time! I will give that a go too. ❤
Glad it was helpful! You know, this is the exact kind of thing I can help you with this coming Monday (1/23 @ 3pm PST) in my Breath Support Bootcamp. Have you heard about it? You need to come!!! Hey Arden! I love your approach of connecting body and mind awareness with singing technique. I'm a singer who struggles with pushing too much air and your videos and blog posts have helped me a great deal. So I just wanted to drop by and thank you for that. :) You're amazing!
Hi Nico, somehow my first post didn't go through. Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm so glad my teaching resonates with you. If you haven't already, come join my free Virtual Voice Studio. You'll get technique tips, tools and other motivational content for singers bi-weekly to your inbox. The link above will take you there. xo
Thank you, Arden! I am about to practice Disco Descent using this imagery, at your suggestion! Thanks, again, for taking the time to listen to it, and giving me this tip so I can sing it better! I will let you know how it went! Have a wonderful day! Much love, Susan
Arden? I wanted to tell you! Today I practiced Disco Descent on lip trills while thinking "Inhale, inhale." For the last several days, I have just been doing simpler vocal exercises with this whole "inalare la voce" mental concept. Arden, Disco Descent feels completely different than it did a week ago! Without listening, I can't say for certain. But, it felt much easier! I think I am getting it! I had to let you know about this! THANK YOU so much! Love, Susan
Listen to her I lost my voice do to that but thanks to learning and TH-cam I slowly started gain it back but I’m here to focus specifically on my breathe
Came back to watch this again today after an initial watch a few months ago. It was a great refresher for revising a technique that had lapsed a little in my body. Thank you Arden :)
I noticed that I used the inhale inhale long before.I thought it was a bad habit and switched to pushing the voice out to the front because I also wasn't satisfied with how nasaly I sounded with it but all it needed was the right breathe support and now when I tried it again I found that it isn't even nasal singing it's just how my actual singing voice sounds like. 🤷🏻♀️ But I'm still wondering if you have to stay expended while you sing or not.
Michael Trimble always talks about this idea of setting the breath, but I never understood what that means or how to do it. You have really made it clear and I can't wait to try this.
Hi, Can you speak to Jeannie Deva’s method, namely Rib cage expansion. Can you compare / contrast your method with hers PLEASE ? I’m asking because her method I feel is the same, just using different imagery as you put it, but I think hers gets to the root of it all, more plainly. Expand the ribs n keep them expanded as you sing. In this context I feel these are the same. Her excercises which target direct and intentional strengthening and expansion of the ribs I think will bring someone up to speed very quickly, rather than somewhat indirectly with other methods. I’m a beginner btw and I am only guessing.
As always, your vids are great and much appreciated, Arden. May i ask: do you yourself worry about keeping the ribs totally expanded? I think i kinda do a halfway-thing, where they're not collapsed per se, but they definitely (upon the renewal) go out a little more. Cheers, jeff

Hey ma'am,I use to practice, like inhaling & hissing out but I cannot put them while singing, still callapse & my abdominal muscle become tight. I really can't work out my breath support singing. Therefore,I will be grateful if u can suggest me regarding this.
Got a questions...Im getting used to the breathing techniques and at first it was a little bit difficult to find the posture and everything but does at some point this becomes 2nd nature ?.. Because right now i got to think of it entirely .. and another one is if the muscles that you train you get better control of them ?
So mam help me out plzz if you see this. So we technically have to do nothing but just to think apposite of pushing voice out by contacting the ribs and that will make the air out in a relaxed way. Or did I get the wrong idea??
I'm that same thing but don't know why I can feel strain in my throat and if I do reverse of this technique I feel no tension or strain but I didn't sound as good as I sound in that one
Heard this idea a little bit ago and it really helps. The "don't reach your max expansion right away" was interesting to me. I thought it was more like, inhale as much as you can and then continue that cue to stay expanded as much as you can. Is there a benefit to literally not fully expanding during the inhale and doing it before a hard piece of a phrase? Or is it more of a mental thing to really allow yourself to stay expanded on those phrases where you are more likely to collapse? Thanks again!!
THANK YOU. I’m an opera singer and I’m struggling with breath support. I’m trying to relax my body so I can take an adequate breath without collapsing. I’m like a balloon that immediately inflates. 🙁
Colton Ruscheinsky Hi! I haven’t completely solved my problems, but I have made significant progress. I started working with a new teacher in January who helped me with taking very deep breaths. At first, they were probably overcompensated, but it helped stretch my lungs and strengthen my core muscles. My teacher had me sing the same exercises every week that require one breath, so I could gauge how much air I need and whether or not I’ve gotten better at controlling my rate of exhale. I also made sure to be mindful of my posture. Standing and singing against a wall helps. I have also had a consultation with Arden about mental blocks that have kept me from conquering these issues and joined her FB group. I highly recommend calling her if you’ve had some training but are otherwise at a standstill. Even if you don’t end up working with her, she’s very intuitive and supportive.
Hi Arden, this is a terrific video. I've heard Thomas Hampson talk about keeping your rib cage up (not "forcing it up, of course), as well as about having the sensation of inhaling while singing. I tried what you suggested about drinking in the sound, and it definitely helped. I certainly have a lot to learn about this - but yours is the first video I've found where anyone talked about it (other than Thomas Hampson, but he didn't discuss it in the context of how to do it). I'm a huge fan of Thomas Hampson, by the way. I'm working on "Avant de quitter ces lieux", and for me, his interpretation is second to none of those I've heard. I had a question about Apoggio. I listened to that video as well. At this stage, what seems to happen is that my rib cage remains more buoyant, but the lower abdomen feels like it's narrowing, changing from the shape of a cylinder to the bottom of a cone - getting narrower. You talk about leaning out. If you have any thoughts for an image or a way to approach that I would be very interested.
I am really struggling to sustain the expansion/support :( The minute I begin to hiss and make any sound I feel my whole core collapsing. Any other tip to overcome that?
First of all I'm no pro, I'm just like you browsing the internet for knowledge and what I'm going to tell you could be false. I was just as confused as you, when I watched her videos. And although I think Arden is a good coach I think she fails to get one point across. the point of appoggio is not to not contract your breathing muscles at all, but to delay their contraction (this is how most people explain it). the contraction is what initiates the exhalation in the first place. How fast your muscles contract is what determines how much air gets leaked and by gaining control over that you can adjust this to your needs. For the most part what you want is fairly little air in a constant manner, meaning you need to learn to let your breathing muscles contract slower than they would in everyday breathing.
Dear teacher, I'm more and more confused every " sound"..😅 Tired of seeing great women singers, over weigh body with a kind of ballon in their abdominal part and their breast almost reaching the throat...but singing as a birds.. ( Bell Canto)... I love your videos but after analyzing hundreds of others , I feel I'm not able to mumble a word. I'm so worry about; my abdominal part, belly bottom, ribs, appoggio, breath support, larynge, vocal cords. Please, who in earth will it be able to sing...

I watched the appoggio video a while ago and this video definitely helps me understand it better.
Thanks for saying so Christi. Once definitely has to do with the other. So glad this clarified things for you!

Beautifully put. Thank You!
You’re an awesome voice teacher!
Who the hell gives thumbs down to a tip like that!? That's good advice!
It worked. Yaay💃💃
actually I watched your vids before about breathing technique, but why is it just now that I get it. haha really thankful. :)
Been struggling also and am definitely gonna try these tips bcs I hav always tried to get my voice 👂 but from now on am gonna implement this tip
Always sing on the gesture of the inhale! 👍

An absolutely superb video!!!
I had noo idea about the drinking it up bit. And it works. I always thought you had to project which made the sounds terrible and weak

Great video!! Can this technique be applied to simply speaking also?
Please improve your audio in some videos I cant hear you well. However this video is really helpful keep making videos.
Should I do the vocal warmup in this same breathing technique or I can do I'm any condition or I should only use this technique while singing only

Do you do online classes? I found this tip really helpful! ^_^
I Inhale and Lean my support when I start to sing and I exhale the air til I reach the end of the phrase is this the way to do
I love your necklace!
Hey ma'am,I use to practice, like inhaling & hissing out but I cannot put them while singing, still callapse & my abdominal muscle become tight. I really can't work out my breath support singing. Therefore,I will be grateful if u can suggest me regarding this.
So during a song should i inhale only on high notes or during the whole song feeling the expansion visualization on high notes?

Hi Daniel, on my chanel here, look for the video on “Appoggio”. That should help
I still don't get it. It feels like holding my breath and only takes a few moments to be out of breath...
