  • Ever since I got the new KG-S88G from Wouxun, people have been giving a lot of compliments for the way it sounds. Today, we're putting it to the test by giving it the Pepsi Challenge. You remember the Pepsi challenge, where people were given a blind taste taste between Coca Cola and Pepsi to see what they'd chose? Well, the results of this test were just as surprising as that one,

I have the S88G and I absolutely love it. I also once had the 935G but I was so impressed with the S88G that I gave away the 935G. The S88G is a superheterodyne while the 935G is an SOC (direct conversion) radio. I can't speak for the FT-60 because I've never owned one but I've heard that it's considered to be a classic radio.

I also gave my 935G away. Wasn't happy with its RX and audio. However, I wouldn't say the S88G is the best. I think the 805G, UVD1P, and UV9D (all superhets) are better. I lost my faith in Yaesu after playing with their FT-65, so I don't see any point in getting the FT-60.

I have the GMRS equivalent to the KG 935. It is a good radio. The FT 60 scans much faster, which is important . It also has superior memory banks. Up to 1000 memories that can be put into one memory bank or split between 9 other memory banks. You can put a frequency into more than one bank. The FT-60 may not have all the bells and whistles that some newer radios have, but the Ft-60 operates so much better in real use. You can walk into a Ham Radio club and get instant respect from even the pickiest operator. I have about 15 HT's fron $25. To $600. When going out, unless I need something other than analog, I take the FT-60. It takes a little time to learn. Once you do you will find it just works the way a radio should.

Is the USB C charging worth getting over the 2600mah battery in the 905g? Is the extra money worth the S88G?

You can adjust the gain on the mic in the menu and if you look, there is a video on changing the mic output in the "Service Menu". The audio is plenty good enough with just the mic gain slightly raised. The fast scanning and the way the memory banks can be set up are something that really makes the FT-60 shine. It makes a huge difference in real world use. The front end is simply the best !

I agree with the folks commenting about the importance of reciever performance unless you are good with a one way conversation. Also, the FT60r is not discontinued. You can buy one brand new right now for $155. I am curious how the FT60r stacks up against the more expensive Wouxun models though...

Get the UV9 series. Good modulation. Excellent receiver. RX audio is a bit on the treble side, but it helps in noisy environments.

Okay, I'm a new ham as of Friday to be exact, so I don't know what I'm talking about if I'm wrong, BUT I thought the Ft60 was a ham, and the wouxun kg S88G is a GMRS RADIO either I'm just confused or these radios will transmit out of band per haps with a mars mod

Military Affiliated Radio Service, or MARS is a military ham radio joint effect, and many ham radios can be modded to transmit outside of the ham bands for MARS use.

@@MattKester GMRS is 20khz bandwidth, UHF ham radio is 12.5khz, so the FT-60 will sound poor when used on GMRS and received by other GMRS radios. Just because it can transmit doesn't mean you should use it. Same for the baofengs and all the others you want to"repurpose" for GMRS.

How was the gain set on the FT-60 ? Tell you what, take both radios up to a big transmitter site and see which radio you want to keep. It will be the FT-60. The FT-60 is a brick and also makes a great weapon. The FT-60 will still be working long after the Chi-Com radio goes tits up. See if that model Chi-Com radio is still selling strong 11 years after it came out. As you can guess, I think the FT-60 is the analog, 2m/70cm radio all others wish they could be. Ears are everything with an HT. And if that's not enough, you can beat the tar out of the FT-60 and it will just come back for more. I have abused my FT-60 in every way you can think of except sexually and it just keeps working as good as the day I bought it. Oh, did I mention that 8 years after I bought my FT-60, the original battery still holds a decent charge ? Not 100%, but it still gives many hours of operation.

@@mertklck I think it is the best. There are other good radios out there also. For analog, the FT-60 is hard to beat. It's a brick, literally a weapon, has a wide receive range, fast scanning and great ability to store and use memory channels.

@@e1000sn As I have stated in other posts, in real world use, out in the field, the fast scan rate and the many ways the memory can be configured in the FT-60 are a huge plus for the FT-60. Nothing is worse than a scan rate that lets you watch the grass grow and a lousy scan bank set up. As to sensitivity, I have found when dealing with very weak signal, the FT-60 often does better than other radios. When the signal is stronger, I would not expect to see a lot of difference in most modern radios. The VF-6R has problems with it's front end over time as they have crammed so much into such a small space. I have seen them go somewhat deaf over time (it is a known problem). Not so with the FT-60.
