American manufacturers aren’t interested in satisfying the consumer interest. They never invest in future concepts or speculation. Look at the flat screen TV which RCA engineers worked to develop for decades, but allowed the Japanese, South Korean, and Chinese to dominate. Remember the video disc player that operated with a stylus in contact with the media instead of optical ? How about the screw up with the video tape system, selecting VHS over the superior Beta. Don’t forget the CD player, the DVD, and Blue Ray. I don’t understand it. It seems like they just don’t want to take a chance on new technology. They would rather concentrate on washing machines and bathroom fixtures. Think of it, would you buy a Chinese toilet ? American Standard, and nothing else. It almost seems that all marketing is directed towards seniors. That must be because all of the decision makers are up in age. So we are criticized for buying Chinese radios. Hello, they are making tons of them, with innovative features ! Wake up American Manufacturing, it’s the experimenters and hobbits that you should be aiming for. Everyone else just follows the trend setters. Look at Apple !

Cheap junk chinese stuff we don't need. Most the reason Chinese products are so cheap is from basically slave labor and they steal intellectual property from the usa instead of doing their own r and d. That's the reason we don't make anything here in the states, but that'll all change when trump gets in. Lower taxes and eventually more jobs for us americans.

I've argued for years with an "Old HAM" friend that the lack of integration of modern technology in HAM radios is astounding. I will admit I am a software engineer and might see things differently. But, I am right. The manufacturers need to catch up with the times. It's good to learn of these types of products.

It’s a question worth asking. From my purely non-scientific, anecdotal observations, I feel like the GMRS community definitely does have a bias in his favor. Even if you’re in favor of tariffs and see them as a necessary challenge for long term benefit, it’s still worth doing everything you can to understand how to have them affect your personal bottom line in the near term.

God forbid Motorola (made in Michigan) be able to compete with Baufeng and come out with a line of competitively priced consumer radio. Capitalism meeting consumer demands and filling market gaps! They do have a USB-C battery you can buy separately now. I know it is compatible with the KG-UV9GX. I think it is compatible with this model as well. I wish it came standard with the radio considering the cost of the radio. Most GMRS radios at this price point and even below come with USB-C charging capability now. I own the KG-UV9GX and while I love the radio, I would like to see them add a few features. The screen needs to be easily readable in daylight. I also would like to see them add GPS and text capabilities as that is where GMRS is headed now. There are a few other features I would like to see as well. Overall, you can't go wrong with these radios.

That seems like a pretty high constant load to have on this unit, plus it wouldn’t last long into a power outage. At those levels, you’re gonna want something with at least a 2000watt constant inverter supply and at least 2000 watt hours of battery. This particular unit is just waaay too small for those needs.

I got my Tech license over 30 years ago. I used it for 2m for a few years, then did nothing. But I renewed my license every time it came due (as did my wife). About a year ago I decided to try for General. I studied and memorized everything. Passed the test online. Now I've discovered HF and I'm REALLY loving that! I've spent a bunch of money on radios, antennas, and assorted ham related goodies. Converted my Bully Barn shop into a Bully Barn Ham Shack. I don't know if I'm going to try for an Extra license. I'm 79 and hate to waste valuable airtime trying to memorize stuff I have no interest in. But I guess the bragging rights would be cool. Nice video. I hope you've convinced many more folks to get into the hobby. I've become a POTA freak, both hunting and activating. 73. K7LWL
