My orthodontist was trying to close the space between between molars as years ago I had tooth extracted.She didn't manage to close this space fully but because of putting pressure on front bottom teeth severe black triangle's have occurred.It looks terrible and I think that's orthodontist fault as she didn't do proper judgment before treatment.Am I correct thinking that it is sort of malpractice?I know that there is a method of closing the spaces using sort of mini implant or pin screwed to the bone. *_I had a black triangle and I was able to cure it, I had it for years because of receding gums, I have watched and read that gums don't grow back once it had receded. I believed it before but now I think it's wrong, because my black triangle is almost gone, it's like my gum is growing at the part where the black triangle is. I just brush with baking soda before toothpaste, I also gargle with a non-alcohol mouthwash 3x a day. If only I can post before and after photos here you would really see the difference._*
This guy just played you and all his viewers. At 4:16 he says that gum recession happens when you lose bone. Guess what? Braces break down your jaw bone! mydogissmartandwellbehaved. Gingivitis can caused gum recession as well and black triangle. Many people never have ortho but they have black triangle. So you have to research anew to get more knowledge about it.

Urgh! I wish I know your channel before I got my braces and should have do more research about braces! Wish I could turn back the clock! Experienced so much ups and downs, because I went to the wrong orthodontist! After noticing some weird things happening, I quickly go for another orthodontist. My new orthodontist fixed it. She did a good job. Just got my braces off last 2weeks, luckily my teeth turned out good (Class 2). Btw another great and informative video as usual Dr. Greg!

I have this on my bottom. They filed down my teeth a tiny bit to make them a little less fan shaped, but I still have the black triangles. I’m okay with it tough. Since it’s on the bottom is not very visible. My date is set in November to get my braces off, super excited!

Paid $6200 to straighten my teeth just to hate the end result because of this. Floss doesn't click between them..it goes right through it. I've always had good dental hygiene. I'm not spending another penny with my ortho. Invisalign, plus my 3 kids have braces. I'm paying a fortune!
Thanks for all the good information! I have a black triangle (sounds scarier with that name somehow!) that is improving as I progress through my orthodontic treatment. It appeared between two of my top teeth but has been shrinking now after a round of IPR and heavier wires. I actually don’t mind the way it looks and definitely prefer the space to the crowding I used to have!
this is exactly my issue now... I'm already 1 year and 4 months with my treatment... I have a really bad receding gums even before I started my braces that's why the first ortho that I went to before didn't do it because she was too afraid that after treatment, that I might not have enough gums to hold my teeth... with my ortho now, he's very confident that's why I went on with having a braces treatment and said that there's a way to heal my gums... but I don't think that it's really working... my teeth are quite aligned now but the triangle holes I have (yes, multiple triangle holes, both upper and lower teeth) aren't even small, they are huge... enough to be noticeable in a photo... the only solution that I'm thinking now is to really get veneers after my treatment...I'm not mad at my ortho though because my teeth looks way better now than before and also, I don't think that there's really any other way to fix it than veneers...
I’m netherlands SO MANY ppl have these and I’ve been assuming bc interdental cleaning is BIG here, especially with wooden picks. Since i e started using interdental brushes (that feel at least a little bit less violent) I have definitely noticed points of the gum starting to slowly become less and less pointy
i get my braces off in a day but i noticed that but i think it’s just because how my teeth were shaped and the positions they used to be in caused it. my teeth were very crooked.

I am in the middle of orthodontic treatment and my orthodontist has talked about polishing, shaving my black triangles?? .... sorry, not quite sure of the wording he used, but he did mention my 'black triangles'. You explained it wonderfully and I now feel much better. I'm pretty happy with the treatment so far, however I do hope in the end some of the black triangles do "close" a bit :-)
How are your "triangles" now? Have they closed further with treatment? Did your orthodontist do interproximal reduction (IPR) to correct or minimise your triangles? I too am Aussie and on the "north side of 50" ;). I'm 3mths into my braces journey and have developed these "black triangles" which no one had informed me about... I feel mine are quite large :'( I'm hoping a lot of mine will be from orthodontist making space for rotated teeth and then mine will close up a little when he "finishes" off... I somehow think I will be in for more expense to minimise these black triangles (eye-roll).
@@HowdieBowdie007 Hi Michelle. Yes, I do feel IPR has helped somewhat. I'm not sure if he'll do a bit more (shaving as he calls it), but he says that you can't do too much as it can make your teeth sensitive. I guess when the braces come off I'll be able to tell how small or large they are as I've got many before and during pics of my braces. Good luck with yours and it's great to hear that someone else around my age has braces too! I sit in the waiting room for my appointments and everyone else it seems has a school uniform on :-)

Ann that time and money 👎🏼 my eldest daughter included 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ 🤷♀️

Thank you very much for this very informative video. Got my braces removed in February and I’ve noticed the spaces and thought my gaps were coming back even though I have built in retainers and did wear my clear retainers 90% of the time. I was starting to feel like I wasted my money on braces and I’ve already moved away from that state so I couldn’t go see the orthodontist that did my work. I do have good oral hygiene so until I can get in to see my dentist to talk about my options I’ll floss less at those areas with my feed through floss and use my waterpik more.
I never had it but before I knew about braces floss, I used one in my gap to try and brush in between 🙄 and ended up creating them. Now the gum part rarely wanna go down leaving a triangle🥺.
random question but why are brackets on the lower teeth placed on the bottom of the teeth and not in the middle? is there a practical reason or just because of aesthetics?
I'd always had crowded teeth with not a single space to be found. Now, with braces at 31, as they've straightened out they've revealed where the crowding had discouraged gum growth, causing black triangles among my now-straight bottom front teeth. We'll see how they look by the end of treatment, but at the moment I'm not worried about them. In the brginning of my treatment I had triangles on top, too, but they've all closed up by now (13 months in).
Doc, I am doing everything you said in regards to oral hygiene. I don’t know how to keep my teeth any cleaner even on braces! I’ve gotten congratulations from my general dentist for keeping my teeth so clean and I found 2 black triangles on my lower arch. I’m still in braces. I have elastics to close my bite. I don’t understand! Could you give me some advice? I see my orthodontist in 8 days
I had one on the bottom fronts and they used a drill with a disc to shave down the ends of my teeth and used power chains to bring them in. My appointment is on the 28th of this month so I'll give you an update on what they'll do next. 👍

Great video as usual! :) I was just wondering, my two front teeth have this weird gap(?) where, at the top, close to the gums, they’re a little bit separated, but they separate more and more until it looks like sort of a “triangle gap.” Is that some kind of “reverse” black triangle or is it just a gap? I also have an overjet so maybe that’s part of the problem? I hope that made sense. 😅
You should make a video on slanted teeth and symmetry. I have braces and I’m noticing that my bottom left canine is sitting higher then my bottom right canine giving giving me this slanted look when you look straight at my bottom teeth. I wonder if it’s common and if braces can solve this problem.

i’m 18 i have an underbite i had an expander/braces when i was younger but only for my top teeth. i’m getting the expander again in a week and then braces eventually but he’s not sure if the braces will fix the underbite without surgery. can you explain why surgery may be needed?
My 1st ortho fixed my black triangles. As soon as I completed treatment, my hygienist shaves the enamel between my teeth and brought them back, far worse than the previous time. I'm on my 2nd set of braces to fix this now but I think they'll be there forever since a lot of of my teeth was shaved down already.
Sir, I am suffering from many mouth disorders. As i am having problem while opening and closing of the mouth. I am suffering from bruxism. Jaw deviation is not proper. Having vertigo and dizziness throughout the day. Have pain in the neck, eyes, forehead, centre of the head, temples, behind the ears and many more parts of the head. Is this all due to tmj ?? so i had one tiny black triangle on my midline bottom teeth. i thought it wouldn't be possible to fix it coz once gum is gone, it's gone. so my dentist just told me to clean better 3 times a day with an electric toothbrush and i used the mouthwash they recommended me. i also stopped flossing to prevent making the black triangle worse so instead i used waterpik to clean between the teeth. So i did this for a month, and for some reason, the black triangle lightened in colour as if my gum grew back or like it got better. at first i thought it was just food stuck in there making it look like that but i used my toothbrush and cleaned that area to see if it was the food but... nothing - it stayed the same. so it improved but of course it will never return to the way it was. and again, it was only small so i think that's why. Now, it's unnoticeable unless someone goes right in my face and asks to see my teeth which no one other than the dentist will lol i'm going to get braces soon too so i hope they don't reverse all my hardwork HAHA

The dentist suggested to do IPR and extend the treatment... I was very hestitant to do it, but after watching this video I've changed my mind. Don't insert between teeth. Just use floss. The open areas you can use the insert The dental industry purposely sabotages peoples teeth and gum to have more clients and to have those clients over their whole lives bro

Thats because you have Damon Braces (Self-Ligating Braces) They don't need rubber bands to hold the wire in place, however I think when you get powerchains you'll should be allowed to choose the colour.

My gum specialist seem to think I will have a black triangle after my frenectomy and gingivetomy. I expressed this concern with my orthodontist today and she repositioned my brackets on my front two teeth, took off my power chain & put me back in singles. How is this going to help? I have a black triangle. Not saying where. I was really stupid to develop it, but at least it's scared me into maintaining literally PERFECT dental hygeine. It's annoying since it's like I can feel when REALLY sucking on my gums, but no blood comes out at all. In fact the triangle is so small you can't even see it unless you looked really close at it and dried out my entire mouth. Otherwise it looks completely normal. I'll just use this as a lesson to give a shit about my teeth and move on with life. I'll get a check up on this soon and see whether I should have a graft. But this incident occured two years ago and has not got worse since for me. Just a bit annoying that I let it happened. I'lll die anyways one day, we all do. I think we should accept imperfections while also doing the best we can and move on from mistakes. I'm going to really try to let this go. I wished i never looked into getting teeth whitened since ever since this, despite me developing this MINISCULE triangle that no one can see 2 years ago, it lead to tremours and heartbreak type pain. I'm moving on, but I'll still go and see a pedodentrist to see if anything should be done. We all age this will naturally occur over a very long period of time. Please focus on more important things but also use it as an experience to not let it get worse, but actually improve. and just move on. Hell, 30 years from now. Pedontrics may develop to restore the papilla i.e pink triangle. so seriously move on. :) Mostly talking to myself here.
I had a gum graft towards the end of my braces journey as my lower gum line receded significantly once the crowding was fixed. I still have the black triangle, they are just smaller.
I just noticed mine about two weeks ago and go to the dentist next month.. is that too long to wait? I wear retainers every other night, brush my teeth daily, floss, and have just started using mouthwash. I’m super worried about it because i take such good care of my teeth!

is teeth contouring good for the teeth after braces treatment?
this is exactly my issue now... I'm already 1 year and 4 months with my treatment... I have a really bad receding gums even before I started my braces that's why the first ortho that I went to before didn't do it because she was too afraid that after treatment, that I might not have enough gums to hold my teeth... with my ortho now, he's very confident that's why I went on with having a braces treatment and said that there's a way to heal my gums... but I don't think that it's really working... my teeth are quite aligned now but the triangle holes I have (yes, multiple triangle holes, both upper and lower teeth) aren't even small, they are huge... enough to be noticeable in a photo... the only solution that I'm thinking now is to really get veneers after my treatment...I'm not mad at my ortho though because my teeth looks way better now than before and also, I don't think that there's really any other way to fix it than veneers...

I’m netherlands SO MANY ppl have these and I’ve been assuming bc interdental cleaning is BIG here, especially with wooden picks. Since i e started using interdental brushes (that feel at least a little bit less violent) I have definitely noticed points of the gum starting to slowly become less and less pointy
i get my braces off in a day but i noticed that but i think it’s just because how my teeth were shaped and the positions they used to be in caused it. my teeth were very crooked.

I am in the middle of orthodontic treatment and my orthodontist has talked about polishing, shaving my black triangles?? .... sorry, not quite sure of the wording he used, but he did mention my 'black triangles'. You explained it wonderfully and I now feel much better. I'm pretty happy with the treatment so far, however I do hope in the end some of the black triangles do "close" a bit :-)
How are your "triangles" now? Have they closed further with treatment? Did your orthodontist do interproximal reduction (IPR) to correct or minimise your triangles? I too am Aussie and on the "north side of 50" ;). I'm 3mths into my braces journey and have developed these "black triangles" which no one had informed me about... I feel mine are quite large :'( I'm hoping a lot of mine will be from orthodontist making space for rotated teeth and then mine will close up a little when he "finishes" off... I somehow think I will be in for more expense to minimise these black triangles (eye-roll).
@@HowdieBowdie007 Hi Michelle. Yes, I do feel IPR has helped somewhat. I'm not sure if he'll do a bit more (shaving as he calls it), but he says that you can't do too much as it can make your teeth sensitive. I guess when the braces come off I'll be able to tell how small or large they are as I've got many before and during pics of my braces. Good luck with yours and it's great to hear that someone else around my age has braces too! I sit in the waiting room for my appointments and everyone else it seems has a school uniform on :-)
@@crabtree2100 yes 🤣🤣 I feel the same too... kids and their parents all around me 🤣 You’re not alone in this journey 🥰 I’m a Dental Assistant and quite a few of our adult patients have had and are going through ortho... and you can bet us “adults” patients will be more compliant wearing the bands and retainers after treatment to keep our teeth straight than “most” (generalising here 💁🏻♀️) younger patients 😉 I see a lot of patients who don’t wear their retainer and there teeth move ... Ann that time and money 👎🏼 my eldest daughter included 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ 🤷♀️
I’m an Ortho assistant, and currently in tx myself. I have a black triangle between my upper 1s and my dr will be doing the IPR at my next adjustment to hopefully correct it!

Thank you very much for this very informative video. Got my braces removed in February and I’ve noticed the spaces and thought my gaps were coming back even though I have built in retainers and did wear my clear retainers 90% of the time. I was starting to feel like I wasted my money on braces and I’ve already moved away from that state so I couldn’t go see the orthodontist that did my work. I do have good oral hygiene so until I can get in to see my dentist to talk about my options I’ll floss less at those areas with my feed through floss and use my waterpik more.

Yes, I am 71 , and just got my bottom braces removed and my lower front teeth , I do have a gap I have never had, Im guessing its from bone loss

Braces doesn’t give you the perfect smile. It gives you a better smile than before.
I never had it but before I knew about braces floss, I used one in my gap to try and brush in between 🙄 and ended up creating them. Now the gum part rarely wanna go down leaving a triangle🥺.
random question but why are brackets on the lower teeth placed on the bottom of the teeth and not in the middle? is there a practical reason or just because of aesthetics?
probably so the top teeth don’t touch the brackets and break them when your mouth is closed!
I had that question but because mine are in the middle. So when I close my mouth I can feel the teeth on top of the brackets
I'd always had crowded teeth with not a single space to be found. Now, with braces at 31, as they've straightened out they've revealed where the crowding had discouraged gum growth, causing black triangles among my now-straight bottom front teeth. We'll see how they look by the end of treatment, but at the moment I'm not worried about them.
In the brginning of my treatment I had triangles on top, too, but they've all closed up by now (13 months in).

I’ve gotten congratulations from my general dentist for keeping my teeth so clean and I found 2 black triangles on my lower arch. I’m still in braces. I have elastics to close my bite. I had one on the bottom fronts and they used a drill with a disc to shave down the ends of my teeth and used power chains to bring them in. My appointment is on the 28th of this month so I'll give you an update on what they'll do next. 👍

Great video as usual! :) I was just wondering, my two front teeth have this weird gap(?) where, at the top, close to the gums, they’re a little bit separated, but they separate more and more until it looks like sort of a “triangle gap.” Is that some kind of “reverse” black triangle or is it just a gap? I also have an overjet so maybe that’s part of the problem? I hope that made sense. 😅

You should make a video on slanted teeth and symmetry. I have braces and I’m noticing that my bottom left canine is sitting higher then my bottom right canine giving giving me this slanted look when you look straight at my bottom teeth. I wonder if it’s common and if braces can solve this problem.

My 1st ortho fixed my black triangles. As soon as I completed treatment, my hygienist shaves the enamel between my teeth and brought them back, far worse than the previous time. I'm on my 2nd set of braces to fix this now but I think they'll be there forever since a lot of of my teeth was shaved down already.

I have them and I want to get them removed! Ive had adult braces removed already
so i had one tiny black triangle on my midline bottom teeth. i thought it wouldn't be possible to fix it coz once gum is gone, it's gone. so my dentist just told me to clean better 3 times a day with an electric toothbrush and i used the mouthwash they recommended me. i also stopped flossing to prevent making the black triangle worse so instead i used waterpik to clean between the teeth. So i did this for a month, and for some reason, the black triangle lightened in colour as if my gum grew back or like it got better. at first i thought it was just food stuck in there making it look like that but i used my toothbrush and cleaned that area to see if it was the food but... nothing - it stayed the same. so it improved but of course it will never return to the way it was. and again, it was only small so i think that's why. Now, it's unnoticeable unless someone goes right in my face and asks to see my teeth which no one other than the dentist will lol i'm going to get braces soon too so i hope they don't reverse all my hardwork HAHA

The dentist suggested to do IPR and extend the treatment... I was very hestitant to do it, but after watching this video I've changed my mind. In case the triangles don't disappear completely after some time, is there something else that can be done? Not necessarily by the orthodoncist but a remedy we can apply at home? Hi Dr.Greg, I never really used to have black triangles until I got braces and started using interdental floss. They appeared after I started inserting and brushing between the two teeth even with the smallest size 0.4mm since the spaces are really tight. Do I still proceed with this? I'm worried
Don't insert between teeth. Just use floss.

I recently had these black triangles appear on my lower incisors after getting braces a few weeks ago. I have some crowding issues and receding gums. Since I just started my treatment, will the black triangles get worse, or can they possibly fix themselves as the teeth move into their correct positions?

I had to get braces at age 64. I developed a black triangle @ 2 months into the brace process. I am now approaching 4 months and still have the triangle. My orthodontist made a comment at month 3.

The purpose of the retainer is to retain the teeth in a particular position, but your teeth do not want to be in that position. So there is a constant war between your teeth and retainer. There is tug of war between your teeth wanting the move to its natural resting position and the retainer that is trying to keep the teeth in particular position, so the teeth is subject to conflicting pressure from the retainer and the soft tissue in the mouth. This leads to gum recession and root resorption.

Why do I feel duped by my dentist after paying all this money for invisalign and towards the end of my treatment I see all this triangle going on in my mouth. To make it worse the treatment is making my smile look much better but this TRIANGLE BS is wearing me out after this!!!

Thats because you have Damon Braces (Self-Ligating Braces) They don't need rubber bands to hold the wire in place, however I think when you get powerchains you'll should be allowed to choose the colour.

Looking at my teeth after this video in search for black triangles (which I thankfully don't have) I noticed that one of my lower frontal teeth has cracks on it. It's not chipped like in missing a piece but just looks like a crack below the surface of the enamel, what could this be and could it be fixed?

Hey! I watched your veneers video and just have a question. So I have no idea if it happened naturally, or if I just eat rough things but my teeth are kind of rugged. Instead of the smooth curve that I usually see with other people, mines is kind of bumpy. I’m nearing the end of my treatment so I end just wondering...Is that something veneers can fix? Or is there some other procedure that I need to endure to fix it?

My gum specialist seem to think I will have a black triangle after my frenectomy and gingivetomy. I expressed this concern with my orthodontist today and she repositioned my brackets on my front two teeth, took off my power chain & put me back in singles. How is this going to help? I have a black triangle. Not saying where. I was really stupid to develop it, but at least it's scared me into maintaining literally PERFECT dental hygeine. It's annoying since it's like I can feel when REALLY sucking on my gums, but no blood comes out at all. In fact the triangle is so small you can't even see it unless you looked really close at it and dried out my entire mouth. Otherwise it looks completely normal. I'll just use this as a lesson to give a shit about my teeth and move on with life. I'll get a check up on this soon and see whether I should have a graft. But this incident occured two years ago and has not got worse since for me. Just a bit annoying that I let it happened. I'lll die anyways one day, we all do. I think we should accept imperfections while also doing the best we can and move on from mistakes. I'm going to really try to let this go. I wished i never looked into getting teeth whitened since ever since this, despite me developing this MINISCULE triangle that no one can see 2 years ago, it lead to tremours and heartbreak type pain. I'm moving on, but I'll still go and see a pedodentrist to see if anything should be done.
We all age this will naturally occur over a very long period of time. Please focus on more important things but also use it as an experience to not let it get worse, but actually improve. and just move on. Hell, 30 years from now. Pedontrics may develop to restore the papilla i.e pink triangle. so seriously move on. :) Mostly talking to myself here.

I had a gum graft towards the end of my braces journey as my lower gum line receded significantly once the crowding was fixed. I still have the black triangle, they are just smaller.
