as someone in their late 20s that just got metal braces for the first time, your channel has helped a ton with answers to my lingering questions. thank you!
I had my metal braces taken out after 9months and changed to clear aligners cause my orthodontist said that there's some adjustments that would be much faster and easier to be achieved by using aligners. Having experienced both metal braces and clear aligners treatment, I can say that clear aligners are definitely much more comfortable than metal braces! No food getting stuck in between brackets, and no cuts in the cheeks! The only con is during the first 1-2days when you change a new set of aligners, you've to force yourself to put it on cause it HURTS!
My experience with Spark aligners is that it doesn't hurt at all. Compared with the metal braces I had as a kid, that hurted A LOT the first week after they changed the wire, I think this clear braces is nothing compared to that.
I had braces as a teenager and didn't wear my retainers. Now I'm mid 30s and went with metal braces. I knew what to expect and the results would be faster and cheaper. I'm so glad I went traditional. It's been 11 months and I get them removed next month. I've been wearing masks and people didn't even know I had braces.
I'm in the same boat... didnt wear my retainers. Didn't realize it's a forever thing. Then had my wisdom teeth out and. Now all my teeth slid where the retainers no longer even fit in my mouth 😢
Thanks for making this! As someone with Damon braces who’s not a teenager, I was constantly asked why I didn’t get Invisalign. It’s a personal decision and I had been told I was a great candidate for Invisalign. Ultimately, I didn’t trust myself to follow through with the Invisalign if it got too painful. With the metal braces you have no choice.
I have damon overpriced braces. I didn't want the Invisalign. I probably would have chewed threw them, because I have bruxism. I guess people also don't want them, because they like to show off the metal lol.
Thank you. As an older patient, there’s no way I would have gone through the first few days with the Invisalign, but with the braces, I had no choice but to bear that pain.
This is the literal reason why i chose metal braces over Invisalign. I am so irresponsible and have a low pain tolerance, I definitely would have snatched the retainers out of my mouth
I just had my metal/traditional braces taken off yesterday after 2.5 years and I truly had an amazing experience. I maintained good oral hygiene by flossing after every meal (using the floss threader my orthodontist office provided me with, and soft picks I purchased off of Amazon. Because many of us are at work and/or school throughout the day I’d use my Soft Picks to floss and remove food from my wires and brackets during the day, and the floss threader at night (this is a little time consuming). Also, I still had my teeth cleaned by my regular dentist twice a year. So overall, the tools I used daily to maintain oral hygiene was (1) brushing my teeth, brackets, wires, and GUMS in the morning and night, (2) flossing after every meal, (3) rinsing my mouth with mouth wash twice a day, and (4) using a water pick to rinse food, bacteria and germs from my mouth, brackets, and wires. If you follow the key steps your orthodontist advises you, you’ll be set. I just got my clear retainers yesterday a few hours after my braces were removed and I love them. You can do this girls and boys; ladies and gents- I got traditional braces at 47 and am 1 week shy of turning 50 so you’re never too old. It’s the best investment I ever made. #PrettySmile
I’ve been wearing Invisalign for 6 months so far. I don’t really feel much pain (only the first day that I change tray, but not a lot) and I love that it’s removeable!! I had a few crooked teeth and now it’s straight! It really boasted my confidence because i hated smiling with my teeth looking like that. Also it was only 300 dollars more than regular braces, which is why I went with it.
I think the invisalign experience might depend on how much movement your teeth need. I had severe over crowding and my teeth were very crooked. The first few weeks of invisalign were so painful that I constantly questioned my decision. Every time I put the aligners in it hurt like hell and it hurt even more taking them out. It was so painful I would sometimes skip meals rather then go through the pain of taking them out/putting them back in. Another thing to consider especially in the first few months is that while you can remove your aligners and eat whatever you want you still end up wanting soft foods cuz your teeth hurt. I lost 15 pounds over the first 3 months on Invisalign. However, 6 months in it was not nearly as painful and i could see signifigant movement. I kept them in 22 hours a day. I also brushed my teeth after eating before putting aligners back in (which was a crazy hassle).
@@eatate4 you really don't need to brush your teeth after every meal, just wait 10-15 minutes after a meal to put them back in, to let your saliva clean your mouth
I've had my braces for almost two years and never felt pain by using this trick: If you need your rubber bands put them on right after they tighten your braces so whenever it starts to hurt you can take them off and you feel a relief. And it tricks your mind so that you won't have pain anymore.
I’ve had both metal braces and invisiline later on in my early adulthood. I can tell you, they both are pretty painful. Braces pain was significantly more tolerable than invisiline imo. Also! Lost 4lbs with invisiline, because I couldn’t eat lol!
I’ve had both metal & Invisalign. If you are a major continuous snacker the plastic aligners are NOT for you. You will be popping the aligners on & off too many times that you won’t be wearing them for the amount of hours you’re told to wear them for in a day. In result your teeth won’t move as much & your clear aligner treatment will be longer wearing them for more months.
I’m 32 and first started my journey with Invisalign. I had them for 6 months before transitioning to braces. Honestly, I love my braces so much more. The upkeep is WAY easier! The planning that went into eating and drinking gave me so much anxiety. I had work trips where I was out in public all day long and I either had to forego eating or excuse myself to brush and floss in a public restroom. It wasn’t for me at all. With my braces, I can function much better when I’m out in public or around others. I’m also someone who snacks throughout the day, and you cant really do that with a Invisalign. Thank you for the video!!
@@jessicawilliams5957 honestly, I eat mostly all of the same things except for like taffy, candy apples, etc. I do have chips, I just have to rinse my mouth out or use a toothpick after. Regular apples, I cut up before eating because biting into a whole one is strange. I can make pretty much anything work as long as I go a little slower.
Completely agreed. I had braces years before Invisalign , and Invisalign is much more restrictive. I eat everything on braces with zero damage. Invisalign is purely aesthetics.
Thank you so much! I have to choose between the two but I snack during the day as well. I was told if I'm not wearing them 20-22 hours a day it won't work. And I like to snack - lol. Plus the (in)convenience of taking them out, brushing, etc... especially when out.
I'm 56 and after having crooked teeth my entire life, I decided I wanted straight teeth in my final act! Just got a tooth extracted and full braces. I went with braces because I knew I couldn't keep up with the Invisalign. Two more years to go!
I wish I had gone with traditional braces but I chose Invisalign without doing enough research before hand and it has not been smooth sailing for me unfortunately :( it’s taking extra long because of errors my orthodontists assistants made. Needless to say something that should have taken 1.5 - 2 years to do, I am still doing going into year 3…. Regular braces are much better for more complicated and longer cases, Invisalign is better for smaller movements and 6 months of wear or so. Anything more is better with traditional. In my opinion. Invisalign is very inconvenient for long treatment times, you have to take them out whenever you have anything but water and brush every time you put them back in. It’s super annoying.
@@Im-wk6vw it works wonders for some! It’s working for me, don’t get me wrong, but my treatment is so in depth I wish I had gone with regular braces…. Plus my ortho office messed up my attachments on one of my refinements and I went 3 months without them knowing! Now I’m months behind!!!!
@@melh8179 I'm just curious how that's possible 🤣. Whether it's a general dentist or an orthodontist, they are suppose to come check the assistant's work. Not only have I been in the dental field for 10 years, I went through braces myself, twice. The doctor always checks at the end. In fact most things assistants do, the doctor has to check at the end. Especially in the case of orthodontia since they are changing your bite... things can go wrong.
@@yanakalita1096 and yes she did check it, I’m not gonna write my whole life story to explain to you, accidents happen and mistakes happen, the attachment was there, but it was suppose to change at this particular refinement and they left it the way it was from previous set and that caused the tooth to not move, when I went back the other assistant (3 months later at tray 12) realized the wrong shaped attachment was on.

I had both regular braces when I was about 17 and now went through invisalign with 25, i must say that i prefered the metal braces over invisalign 😂 Invisalign was as noticable from close up as braces, my brackets got pretty stained through drinking a lot of coffee and tea, and i had a horrible lisp throughout the whole treatment. Something i also could‘t imagine is how much time and thought invisaligne consumes throughout the day. I was *constantly* thinking about them. I felt waaay more at ease with my metal braces. So if i could go back, i‘d choose metal braces again to be honest 🙈
I just had invisalign put in last week. On my first tray. So far, I eat less than I used to it's bothersome of taken them out. But, so far things are moving okay. I'm using my for open bite. I see my speech is different I pronounced the words better and boost my confident. Kudos to everyone who are wearing invisalign or the traditional braces.
I’ve had Invisalign for 9 months now with one month left. At first it was very painful. Taking them in and out was rough. The buttons on the teeth definitely cut my cheeks a bit. After a few weeks I become very accustomed to it and had no more difficulty. Chewing feels strange when you take them off as your bite pattern changes. You’re forced to really step up your dental hygiene because you don’t want all that food in your teeth while you have the trays in. I never would go through metal braces so I’m glad Invisalign was an option for me. Great video.
i had braces when i was in middle school and didn’t wear my retainers so now i’m about to start Invisalign in 3 weeks and i’m excited to fix my mistakes!
I’m in the same boat. I’ve had Invisalign now for six months and I have three months left. If I could do it again I would just get metal braces I feel like Invisalign is more of a hassle. I definitely will remember to wear my retainers this time
I can tell you the Invisaligns worked but they did cause me to start clenching at night especially when I sleep and I now have jaw pain and headaches. There are a lot of people complaining of clenching after wearing Invisalign. It does not go away
Ultimately, Invisalign was the easy choice as it was the same price, faster and fewer office visits (my biggest selling point because of work). I have an overbite and slight crowding but I definitely feel and see changes, it’s only been slight discomfort from changing trays but never painful as other people state. I’m half way done but definitely see the worth in going with aligners.
Nice I just started mine yesterday. Some chewing pains but nothing unmanageable. I was really worried by what people were saying the pain would be in the beginning but so far it doesn’t seem so bad. Good luck! how many trays do you have in total?
I had braces in my younger years and now with invisilign and I can see the benefits of both. I don't miss getting my cheeks cut up and the difficulty of cleaning my teeth like I experienced when I wore braces. For me braces and invisilign went for the same cost at the place I go to also. Also I do remember times when I had the braces on the orthodontist tightened them and my head would hurt for days sometimes. With invisilign I don't get that kind of pain at all. For me it came down to the cuts inside my mouth, and one time having a loose wire stick right up into my lip for days until I went back to have it readjusted. Time wise it made way more sense to use invisilign for me. No regrets on this decision. Plus I also remember having a big piece of food hanging from my braces which was embarrassing when I realized this.
I had braces as a teenager, but after some years, you could not really see that I had those braces. As someone being in my early 20s I like straight teeth. And I only had space between my 2 front teeth. Together with my orthodontist I chose the invisalign. I was told that i was going to need them for about 6 months. Once I got them it was 28 aligners, which would be great! But after those 28 aligners, the result wasn’t good. So my orthodontist told me it would be best if i got a new set. So I did. After those additional 10 aligners, nothing changed, it stil lookee the same as become those 10 aligners….I wore them correct amount of time and used those cheweys). So once again I got a new set of aligners (once again 10)…. I’m really not enthousiastic about the invisalign anymore. I’m already 1 year and 6 six months on the way. If I knew, what I know now about the invisalign, I would have chosen the normal braces…
Thank you for your detailed explanation. I had ceramic braces as a teen and now in my 30’s I have Invisalign to correct what wasn’t accomplished as a teen and align any movement that has occurred since. I wish all orthodontists had this conversation with their clients. What’s best for each persons teeth position, pain tolerance etc. i did experience discomfort with sharp edges on Invisalign but the file took away some of it but not all. I also had a slight lisp with Invisalign on 😬 but wearing Invisalign or braces during Covid/lockdown was easy with a mask on 😂 a permanent way to mask the journey.
I got metal braces 10 months ago and I love the results thus far. My teeth are already strait now it’s just time to close all the gaps especially the field goal in the front
I got braces at 18 because I had to pay for them myself and I love the results so much. I should be getting them off in 2 months and I’ve almost had them on for 2 years. I love having mental braces because they work fast and I like the element of surprise when you get them off. Love your videos, I’ve been watching them since the start of my braces journey
Thank you for this video, I’m glad I saw it. I’m aged late 40s and about to get braces (never had them before) next week. I opted for the metal ones as just want to get the job done without having to rely on myself 100% (other than hygiene) and it is great to hear this in depth comparison. My teeth have moved over the years, have kind of slanted inwards, in particular one in the front which keeps chipping and there’s also now a big overlap from the tooth beside it.
I need to show this to my patients before they get their braces put on! You have no idea how many questions I get about the differences between braces vs invisalign! Especially the difference between braces cost and Invisalign price! Thanks for your awesome work!
I love my Invisalign, but one disadvantage is that it is difficult to snack and drink (other than water) on the road, 'cause you need to take out the aligner before and clean your teeth afterwards... and don't loose/forget the aligner when snacking!
I had both braces and Invisalign and I personally preferred Invisalign. I hated the look of braces, food always got stuck in them, the brackets rubbing against my cheeks would hurt sometimes, especially when a bracket would break and the wire would be stabbing into my cheek. I also felt like they hurt more since with Invisalign I was changing aligners so often that the pain was a lot more gradual than all at once. There is a lot more self-accountability with Invisalign so I would still suggest kids and teens just get braces.
@@supriyarudrapaul8005 I’ve heard that can happen too, but I didn’t have any receding. I’ve had no problems, and I still wear my retainers at night to keep them straight.
10 years ago i went to an orthodontist and asked about invisiline. He. Said I wasn’t a candidate. He said that I needed to have to have teeth pulled and would have to wear metal braces for 5 years. I didn’t do it. Fast forward, last year I went to a different Orthodontist, and got invisiline. No teeth were pulled, no discomfort, and only had to wear them for 14 months!! I don’t know if the 1st orthodontist was looking to rip me off for more $ or the Invisiline product got better over the years. Very happy with Invisiline.
I am 4 months into braces. I had heard that Invisalign was cheaper but then found out it wasn't. My doctor said the braces were more effective. I was surprised to hear that. I would like another video to understand what conditions are better for each. My teeth aren't that crooked so it wasn't a big deal. I find I can eat almost all the same foods but have to cut them up into smaller bite-size pieces. So far the brackets are holding up well.
I’m getting braces in a few weeks, although Invisalign is great due to the aesthetics, I do not trust myself at all to wear them😂this is why I chose metal braces🤗
That may be a smart choice for you… I had Invisalign … did not “always” put them in per instructions. Therefore I need and want more refinement. I chose to get braces for the final refinement.
Dr. Greg, can’t tell you have vital your info has been to this 30 yr old new braces wearer. My orthodontist, while being skilled, provided next to NO information. It’s extremely frustrating and trust eroding. I don’t know how I would cope without your channel.
I am 52. I have an Invisalign appointment Friday. I had traditional braces when I was a teenager. I have had several dental procedures and a couple of crowns put on my teeth so I think Invisalign will be the best option for me. I remember the days when my cheeks would be so sore from being irritated from my metal brackets! If no one tells you, ibuprofen or tylenol can help with the tooth discomfort of the adjustments.
I’m 6 months in with wire braces correcting a bite and crowding. BtwOver30🙄. They are annoying but I can already see results! Thanks for your videos!! Very informative!
I had Invisalign since 2020 it is now 2022 and I just switched over to the metal braces because I was not wearing my Invisalign consistently for 22 hours a day… I have had the braces for 4 days and there are no regrets of switching over. I don’t have to worry about placing them back in my mouth, and I don’t have to worry about biting on a chewy and taking pics of my teeth every 2 weeks. I liked Invisalign but it was just too much work and I’m a busy woman to have to be doing all that!
I'm 40 and have been absolutely self-conscious about my awful teeth since my teenage years, my parents never cared to get anything done in that department, and then I couldn't afford it, on top of absolutely shitting my pants at the mere mention of a dentist (resulting in 20+ years of avoidance, yes, gross, I know and I'm far from proud of it). I've had enough and now that I can afford it, I decided that I'm taking the step and made a dentist appointment for January to start the process first with actually seeing a dentist and getting the basic stuff done/sorted out, and to get the wheels moving to get braces so I can maybe actually give a real, genuine smile and none of that tight-lipped smiling thing I've been doing for way too many years, looking back at pictures from the happiest times in my life and seeing this non-smile is breaking my heart, honestly. Watching videos about the different options really helps to ease my mind. I'm in France so I guess maybe the cost aspect of it may be different, but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, because I'm afraid of the pain of the regular braces cutting up the inside of my mouth, but I don't mind the appearance of them (it's not like I show my teeth as they are now anyway so it makes no difference to me) but the difference in cost between regular braces and invisalign is probably going to rule the latter out. I guess I will just have to see about that, but I wanted to say, those videos are so helpful.
You can do it! I'm sorry your latents didn't care about your dental hygiene. Mine didn't due to neglect and a lack of finances to even manage searching for basic care. Find a good dentist and make sure they go through a treatment plan with you. They'll pick the most time sensitive items like cleaning and getting fillings first and then start planning bigger dental work. It's scary, but be clear about what you haven't been able to do (i.e., see a dentist as a kid or young adult). They'll ask if you need headphones, sunglasses with side blinders, a blanket, or a mild sedative to make it through your longer appointments. I have used all of them with bio feedback (having a heart rare monitor) to make it through mine. You can do it, and I'm proud of you.
@@katydid5088 I can actually say I did it! I had no issues with my teeth which I was very surprised about. I had to have my 4 first molars extracted to make room for the braces to do their job. I went with regular metal ones, I had them on for 2 years and now enjoy a much nicer, straighter smile. It wasn't fun but it was worth it. I gained so much confidence and self-esteem!
I just got my metal braces removed after about 2.5 years. Personally my experience was very chill, after the first few tightenings it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. I actually wanted metal braces over Invisalign bc I remember after seeing them on Bell Delphine I thought they looked so cute LOL. I always chose a light pink colour for my rubber bands and idk I thought it was cute
I had 3 years of braces ages 13-16. In all honesty, I had very little cheek irritation. I was given wax but don't ever remember using it. As far as pain goes, braces were NOT painful for me at all. What WAS painful was the spacers for molars to make room for the bands to fit around. I almost went through the roof the first time I went to brush my teeth after the spacers were put in place. I HATED them. Once I got the actual braces, no pain, no discomfort.
I’ve been wearing braces for 1 year now, and I’m very satisfied with how they have straightened my teeth! My teeth are much straighter now than when I first started my orthodontic treatment. I have 1 more year of wearing them until November 2024. And the monthly payment for them is very affordable. I strongly recommend getting braces!
@@glonkwfuggler6790 I just got mine about two weeks ago; on my second tray. I had to have two teeth extracted to correct my class bite. For ME there was definitely discomfort, not pain with my very first tray on one side on the TOOTH NEXT to the extraction site, not on the site due to the force being applied by the tray. The discomfort has since subsided since inserting the second tray. But, that's me; I hope I was able to answer your question. Good luck if your considering Invisalign!
@@glonkwfuggler6790 nope! Don’t get me wrong, there are days when my teeth were sore, especially after tray changes, but it wasn’t a constant thing. The best tip I have is to do tray changes at night before bed, this way you sleep through the most uncomfortable time. The attachments, especially in the beginning feel awkward, and if they’re rubbing against your cheek it can cause irritation and discomfort, dental wax can help with that. At the end of the day, it was totally worth it 🙂
Invisalign was cheaper for my daughter because there wasn't as many appointments. We go back 14 weeks after her first fitting, after that 21 weeks later. With the metal braces, I think it's every 6 weeks to tighten them. She does really well with them, and I can see a difference already. We are only on week 3 though.
Interesting. I finished my Invisalign jourmey a few months ago with a total of 20 trays and I went to see my dentist every 6 weeks. I would have 3 new trays whenever they saw me. I wore each tray for 2 weeks. Now I’m on my retainers.
@@cwayzums how was ur experience? are you happy enough with the result? were you feeling any pain throughout the treatment? did you develop what's called posterior open bite? I'd appreciate if you would spare 2-3 min to answer my questions. thank you!
I just got metal braces fit two weeks ago aged 31 and I love them! It'll take me around a year whereas Invisalign would have taken 6 months+ longer for my case and would have been possibly around £2000 more expensive (UK here). Invisalign wouldn't have been as effective at sorting out bite issues (overbite, slight open bite and slight side bite). I'm looking forward to possibly having a great jawline! So far I haven't been bothered by pain, i see movement ALREADY and some people have asked about my braces saying they want some too and that seeing me with visible braces was the push they needed. It's nice there are so many others happy with visible metal braces in adulthood. I don't think of them as ugly at all!
As another adult in the UK, I'm also very interested in how much it cost you. I've had metal braces in the past but due to my own negligence there's some overbite and movement that needs to be corrected.
For me, I was a good candidate for invisalign but after the consultation, I noticed they can't move my molars. My issue is with gaps. Not moving my molars means I'll have a huge gap between my canines and first molar and I wasn't ok with that. I'm setting up an appointment with my orthodontist soon to see if metal braces can do this. If they can, that's gonna be my best option.
Great video. I opted for Invisalign and have wanted to for some time. I always had friends with traditional braces and worried about cutting my mouth. I agree the Invisalign is a little more work but I’m definitely committed, as anyone should be after spending their hard earned money. I never thought about the fact that with traditional braces, how flossing and brushing would be a little more difficult. I think this is a good video for anyone who is going back-and-forth on which to decide.
Team Invisalign over here for me 🔥 I dropped the Cash from start to finish as soon as I could afford it & I haven't looked back since. When it comes to health , Travel & your wellness in life I always spend the Maximum price I can afford with no complaints because that stuff is so important , more then people realise.
I have actually had both! I would personally recommend invisalign although i think it really depends on the person. I think you do need more discipline to have invisalign as it is a pain having to rinse or brush your teeth after every meal- especially if you're still at school like i am- and it's tempting to just leave them out. but yeah both are really not that bad, and the end result is worth it! :)
Can I ask what you do at school? Do you just have to go to the bathroom at lunch and brush your teeth at school? My teeth are really messed up so I need to do something and I was wanting Invisalign but after watching this video, I don’t want to do either. They both seem too hard for me to deal with.
@@rachelcookie321 of course! so i'd say that this is the biggest con of having invisalign. however i think you just need to find your own way to work it out. like the bathrooms at my school are generallly quite busy so i would try and wait until it was quieter. another thing is try finding toilets with a sink inside, like i used to go into the PE toilets. i'm ngl inivisalign can be quite annoying but there's so many pros, and whilst it's easier to focus on the difficulties i try and think about all the confidence it will give you! (personally, i am a lot more confident after having my braces) though of course there's no need to do anything if you dont want to hope this helped :)
Very informative video. I had braces as a young teen because I had a tooth growing upside down that needed to be pulled down. I don't think the braces were intended to straighten my teeth but to make space for the tooth to be pulled into position. As an adult I am now getting braces to correct an open bite. Another thing to keep in mind is find an orthodontist you trust and have a good rapport with in this process. When I got my first braces, I wanted metal to help cut down the cost of ceramic. The orthodontist put ceramic on without telling us and then charged the extra fees for it
I hope you guys told them off and refused to pay for that since you told them you wanted metal and not ceramic. I would have made hell for sure and threaten to sue them for adding stuff I did not want.
I had braces as a teen for 3 years and 8 months. I LOVE my teeth and how they turned out! I wear my retainer, plus I have a permanent one on the bottom. I had too complicated of a case for any other option (impacted canine & missing adult laterals). Not sure how this video came up but it makes me miss my braces!!
@@Terraxoxo sorry just now seeing this! It ended up great! Im extremely happy with how they turned out. I would like to note that while they looked great from the moment I got the porcelain teeth put on, it wasn’t until maybe 6 months to a year after where my gums and everything looked totally natural. It won’t look bad I promise, just letting you know I feel like theres a “settling in” period that happens after getting the implants. No one can tell I have them now, and truthfully, I forget too! I brush 2x a day and floss at night. Cleanings every 6 months, and they’re doing perfectly! Good luck to you 😃
This was a great video. As a child I had a habit of tongue thrusting (sucking my tongue - I have a very subtle lisp too 😂) and so in my early teens I got braces & rubber bands to close my bite. Unfortunately retainers weren't helpful in keeping my bite closed because I didn't break the habit of tongue thrusting and my orthodontist at the time didn't really educate me on that. I've learned that an open bite is a little bit more complicated than other dental problems because braces can correct, and retainers can keep my teeth straight and gaps closed, but my jaw/teeth can still shift open if I still suck my tongue. Over time my bite opened up again but I did not want to have braces again as an adult. I was happy to learn that the Invisalign technology advance to having the buttons/attachments. Prior to this development I would not have been a candidate for Invisalign. The attachments help deliver the right pressure to help close my bite by pulling the teeth up & down. But the most important part of that experience was my new orthodontist also giving me the information I needed to learn how to work on my tongue thrusting habit. I literally did not know where I was supposed to "normally" rest my tongue in my closed mouth if not between my bite 😂. I was 30 when I trained myself to rest my tongue at the roof of my mouth instead of pushing it against the back of my front teeth (which eventually would lead to me holding it between the top and bottom row of my front teeth). In my opinion, if you are disciplined enough to comply (easier for adults than adolescents), and aren't cost restricted, clear aligners are a great experience. Less pain, less ortho appointments (I got a set of several trays at a time to change weekly or bi-weekly), not as noticeable, and easier hygiene/cleaning. I am not 2 years removed from my treatment. Still wearing retainers at night and couldn't be happier with the results. If you're teeth problems are the result of an oral habit, like thumb or tongue sucking, it's just as important to address that as it is to get or the orthodontic treatment.
Very informative video! In the past I had worn braces for 8 yrs. Because of this my orthodontist strongly advised me that I could never wear braces again as the cement would deteriorate my enamel. Now I’m much older and realize that yes, since I lost my retainer, I need braces again. Invisalign or another company equivalent will have to be my choice. Of course I will have to pay more and I have accepted this fact. Thank you for this video!
Oh my gosh, knowing that Invisalign is healthier for the enamel is so helpful! I just signed up for Invisalign but have been contemplating doing braces instead because of the hassle with eating!
I chose Invisalign and it’s going great! I got a V-Pro to use and it’s virtually painless now. Sooooo much better than when I wasn’t using it at the beginning.
I prefer the Invisalign because it’s almost invisible to be noticed. However, the price is almost triple to the regular metal braces. I watched your videos during the last 4 weeks before putting on my metal braces last week. I was able to choose between the different types braces after seeing the comparison between metal and ceramic braces. At the beginning, I was planning to get the ceramic one. However, due to its fragility compared to the metal braces, and because the possibility of staining, I chose the metal braces. Although I have enough money to get the Invisalign but saving this extra price to something else in my life is better for me. I’m not the first nor the last doctor wearing visible braces in front of his patients 😬
I just started invisalign a week ago and 3 of the attachments broke off my teeth a day after getting them installed. I called the dentist (over memorial weekend) and the next appointment she could give me was 2 weeks away. In my mind I was thinking she would want to urgently get it reattached or I won't be having strong results but she was very casual about it. The only reason I got invisalign is because the Orthodontist said it was about a $200 price difference from braces. It hurt in the beginning. Taking and placing the trays on had me feeling like I was going to break the tray or snap out a tooth. Today officially marks my second week. I'm so glad I've stumbled onto this video as I've learned a lot.
I had both and would recommend the metal braces.I found it annoying having to constantly take my invisaligns on & off.I paid $5,000 for my invisaligns.I had to wear them for 6 months then the retainer.I had to wear my braces 2 years. My mom paid for my braces and I don't remember the cost.Although I'm sure they were much cheaper.
Im about to be 31 and have had crooked teeth my whole life, just a year ago I decided to finally give braces a try and I'm so glad I did, I have about another year left and the change is so noticeable! I feel like I'm almost done tbh, just need a little bit more adjustment on my top 4 teeth to go backwards and thats it. Worst for sure is the scratched up cheeks and the fact that I can't enjoy a lot of hard food and meat off the bone, really miss that, also hate food getting stuck, it's one of the worst.
I have been fighting my orthodontist office for braces for over a year now. They gave me invisalign and I personally find them disgustingly unhygienic. It's the middle of the pandemic and my hands are in my mouth way more than they should be. I have trays covering my teeth holding bacteria directly on my teeth when my saliva should be helping rinse that off. I brush my teeth twice a day and I've never had worse breath. I'm finally getting metal braces and I'm so excited!
Most people can’t smell their own breath, so were people actually telling you this? Also, if cleaning your trays, and brushing before putting them on, there shouldn’t be a hygiene issue. I use a Sonic cleaner for mine, which keeps them very clean.
Wish I saw this video before going Invisalign. I had metal braces growing up and had a fantastic experience. He is correct that while the pain exists for a few days it goes away each time you have a visit. After you wear them for 1-2 years you honestly don’t notice them on you anymore. However, as an adult I decided to go with Invisalign and found them to be harder to deal with because you cannot snack or drink coffee/tea without removing the tray and cleaning your teeth before putting them back on. Not to mention the pain is harder to deal with because you are constantly moving teeth every 1-2 weeks. Lastly, what they don’t mention is with Invisalign they typically have “bite ramps” which are small plastic ramps on the back of your two front teeth and it gives you a lisp for 2-4 weeks. I eventually talked to my ortho and decided to switch to traditional and have no regrets.
I got braces because it was cheaper, I would like to have some fun with color ties, and I wouldn't want to forget putting in/ changing out trays whereas I don't have a choice with braces
I got Invisalign because I'm 58 and have TMJD and the "TMJ" specialist said that braces would help. I'm still skeptical. I'm on tray 41/60. I have seen a change in my teeth alignment but not a change in what he said was wrong with my bite. I'm also still battling TMJD. Also, I have a gap from an extraction that he's not closing so I can get an implant. Well, I haven't gotten an implant in 22 years so I'm guessing he made a mistake. To say I'm frustrated is an understatement.
I started my Invisalign a few days ago and the toughest part for me is getting into the routine of wearing them 20+ hours a day. I have to like plan my eating schedule around wearing them plus I feel the urge to brush right after I eat, feels gross to just pop them in right after. I’m also a medical MJ patient so before I smoke I take them out and that always fucks me up too lol. So deff pros and cons to both in my opinion/experience. I had braces as a kid and at least I didn’t have to constantly take them out to eat and feel like I had to brush 5x a day 🤣 but the Invisalign is nice because u can’t see them and I swear my teeth look straighter by just wearing them lmao
You should be waiting 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth! Your saliva becomes more acidic to breakdown food when you eat but that also means it can be more corrosive to your tooth enamel if you brush too soon. I usually eat, set a timer for 30 mins, and then use that time to clean my trays before brushing.
invisalign question. I drink coffee on and off in the morning/ early afternoon so i have to take them off each sip do i also have to brush between drink sips? I'm seeing my dentist in a few weeks so I'm sure we will go over this but curious 😅
I just started my clear aligner treatment. 21 trays for upper teeth and 7 for lower. I prefer this option as it is easy to maintain dental hygiene, has no food restrictions and the surfaces are smooth. I am in the first week of my treatment, wearing the aligners for 20+ hours I hope I can continue this for the rest of the sets too!
Hi S M, how is it going. I want to get a log era but worried about the pain. Is it more uncomfortable than painful. Do you also have to get trays for both upper and lower teeth or you can them for either? Hope your treatment continues to go well.
@@naturesfinest8205 @NATure’s Finest Hi! I am on my 5th set right now, things are going well. There is a little bit of discomfort, some tightness and pain when you switch to a new set but that passes in a few days. Your dentist be should be able to confirm if you can get trays only for your upper or lower teeth. My lower teeth needed less work, while in my upper set the right half sat a little on the inside of the lower set and both my incisors were out of place.
@@amkii2 Yes, my initial sets made me slur for sometime. I am used to talking with my aligners now so I don't face such issues anymore. Once when I had to talk a lot during a presentation I ended up with minor injuries on my tongue as it rubbed against the edge of the aligner.
Is there a specific reason why the Invisalign goes all the way down to the gums? I've encountered a lot of people who experienced gum recession from their Invisalign and common advice cutting/filing the tray in case it pokes your gum. Wouldn't it technically be possible to make Invisalign a tiny bit shorter right to it wouldn't touch
I’ve had my metal braces for 2.5 months so far & I’m surprised at how much movement I’ve experienced already! My orthodontist offers Invisalign & traditional braces at the same price bc they base the cost on the treatment duration, not the method. Is that common? Also, I have an over jet & so I opted for braces since I was told they would not be able to correct it with Invisalign. Have you ever corrected a poor, misaligned bite with clear aligners vs braces?
At 35 I finally got braces. There was some discomfort at the beginning but my ortho was able to adjust the wire that was poking me. Yes, I get some sore spots from the brackets on occasion, but things are moving well and I'm so happy with them.
I had the normal braces in my 20s and since it was to repair issues with jaw alignment after a fused jaw when I was younger, the access to the back teeth is/was very reduced. The bracket also wasn't fully to the gum line leading to decay happening in the TINY area between the gum line and the metal cap/bracket thing. Which made a nice DEEP line across each of my no. 7 teeth, and due to reasons my braces were kept in place far longer than they should have which didn't help. If I was going through that again, I'd do everything to get the invisalign instead... Don't always just nod and agree with the dentist.
I am over 60 and my dentist suggested to correct overcrowding in my lower front teeth with Invisalign. He said that after the treatment is finished, I will have to wear a retainer all my life at night to keep the teeth coming back to their old place. I am not sure that at my age, the bones will reshape around the new positions. Osteoporosis is already a risk for me. I dont want the hassle, I can eat without problems and I get regular cleanings . I will save my money for other treatments I will need (crowns or other procedures)
I went to at least 8 orthodontist and everyone wanted to charge me 4k+ for braces and wanted to pull teeth. I'm 28 and didn't want to do that. Thank you for this video! Starting invisalign soon, found a dentist I love who said it would only be 3k no teeth pulling.
One thing you didn't touch up on is bite problems- Can invisalign correct open bite/overbite/underbite? How about lingo-braces? Thank you so much for your videos, they're really informative and fun to watch!
@@DrGregAsatrian what about overjet cases? Does Invisalign take longer for treatment, because I assume traditional braces forces more pressure on the teeth
I have done both Invisalign and braces, in my experience I really really really didn’t like Invisalign. It didn’t hold the teeth well. The plastic is pliable, it’s not stiff enough. With braces it’s 24/7 held there and the results for me were much better.
Yes ! Please make a video on which cases would be better for invisalign or braces ! I have high canines on top row, slight crowding on bottom row and a crossbite. I didn't think I was a candidate for invisalign but my dentist said otherwise! I'm hoping this little information I've given can confirm that I am a candidate for invisalign ! Thanks in advance !
I have had my invisalign braces for a year now. I love them. They were a great option for me . The ability to wear them depends on your situation. I would highly recommend consulting with an orthodontist to make sure your investment is successful the first time. This video is very helpful and the doctor addressed a lot of things that happen.
I’m a 58 yr old Englishman who had upper and lower braces fitted on 08/11/23 for the first time ever; my teeth have always been fairly straight but I have a deep bite that has got worse over the last few years. My orthodontist said that braces are generally better for fixing bites (Invisalign is better for crooked teeth). I watched lots of TH-cam videos where so many people said braces are painful but I have not had any sensitivity let alone pain at any stage. I was able to bite down for the first few days with no pain (albeit, my posterior bite blocks made chewing awkward initially). My cheeks got a bit cut up first couple of weeks but that has resolved now too. I and all my friends actually like the look of metal braces more than ceramic because you can still see ceramic anyway (especially if you have a metal rather than white wire and coloured ligatures) but they’re more prone to breakage. I wouldn’t be able to wear Invisalign because the plastic trays are actually quite “chewy” and when I’ve had night guards made out of similar material, I destroy them within a couple of nights by biting / clenching holes into them!
I had my teeth aligned in my 20's and I'm so happy I went with braces! I wanted Invisalign because braces felt embarrassing, but my orthodontist helped me settle for clear bracket braces and I'm so happy she did. There's no way I'd be able to keep up with the aligners as needed for 2 years, I'd want to give up half way. Braces are painful and annoying at times, but you just resign yourself to them and no other decision making is involved. With Invisalign, you have to actively choose/remember to put them in even when your teeth hurt a lot or life gets very busy (travel, eating a quick bite between meetings etc). Also, being able to sip a cup of tea/coffee for an hour is such a luxury! With Invisalign, you'd need to shotgun that thing. Now that my treatment is over, I have clear tray retainers and a permanent lingual retainer on my bottom teeth. I wore the clear trays pretty consistently for the first 2 years or so, but have given up on them now. Meanwhile, the permanent retainer is still in and I forget it's even there most of the time, it's great! (PS if you get ceramic braces with clear elastics - don't eat anything with turmeric unless you're about to go get your wire changed! Learned that the hard way, those elastics discolor so easily! Also maybe cut down on red wine/coffee/tea to keep your elastics looking their best)
Please keep a close eye on your teeth! Because you’re not wearing your retainer, even with your permanent one, they can slowly start to shift, and you may not notice until it’s too late. That’s what happened to sooo many of us. 😭
As a teenager I remember I enjoyed having braces so much, I was weird about it and NEVER complained. I was very grateful beyond words could say. In fact didn't want them to be taken off because I liked the bling! Ahhhahaha! 😂
Just got my Invisalign aligners two days ago. My teeth are pretty straight just noticed a small gap forming in my front two teeth. The aligners are snug into my teeth but really felt no discomfort like I guess some might experience, hoping it’s not a bad sign that I should feel discomfort. Can wait for the final result.
1:50 yes they change them so fast!!! I remember I got mine and like after two weeks my front bottom teeth went from looking like a w to a l from the top view.
I think anyone whose reason for going for braces is: I would remove it when it hurts or forget to wear it means you have shallow resolve and should just give up anyway, sounds like you wont bother with retainers in future. For those who say cleaning teeth between each meal bruh like really hygiene. For an adult with minor to mild issues I would always pick invisalign, it looks better makes you look more attractive if you want to date. If its serious then braces is best solution though.
I have just one medium-size misalignment on my central incisors due to being hit by a thrown rock as a kid. Just got invisalign today and I'm feeling only slight discomfort. Gets a bit stronger when taking them off, but not painful at all. I'm guessing it's way easier to use for few simple misalignments. I'd probably go with braces if I had a lot of misalignments or a big misalignment to fix.
I love your videos. They answer all my questions so I don’t bother my orthodontist. 😊 Thank you for making them. I got metal braces to fix an over bite. I knew I wouldn’t comply with wearing Invisalign. I’m obsessed with my braces. 🤩
I had braces for two years, then my dentist removed them two years early because I moved over 2,000 miles away. apparently other dentists won’t mess with/maintain another’s work? thousands of dollars spent on absolutely nothing. they then put “permanent retainers” on my top and bottom teeth (bottom fell out after 6months, top after 3 years). My teeth are still in disarray and I’m now planning to do Invisalign.
I'm still researching braces and aligners, and I'm yet to get to a decision. But your video has helped me a lot by mentioning many things I hadn't considered. Thank you so much! Your channel is really helpful ❤❤
I had metal braces for almost 3 years in high school. My case was extreme (I had baby teeth that didn’t have adult teeth to replace them, molars growing sideways in my gums above the baby molars, and adult teeth that grew in to the front of baby teeth and didn’t push the old ones out,) and there were some times that it really sucked. Adjustment days were always extremely painful, and I often had brackets pop off of teeth on their own because of the tension. I don’t regret it, but it definitely was difficult. Now that I’m in my mid 30s I’m considering getting aligners to correct the bit of movement my teeth have had since.
After you correct the movement, get a fixed retainer, it's better than removable retainers, cause I'm having a hell of a hard time sticking to my clear retainers
I just visited an orthodontist today and got some of this information but this video expanded my understanding significantly so I can make a choice. Thank you!
You’re amazing, I would love for you to be my dentist, but, unfortunately, I live way far in another country. I learned a lot about braces; because of YOU, the Bentist, and the Braces Guy on tiktok. Really, though, thank you, I learned the most from you. :)
I am glad i got to see your video. I initially was deciding on going with braces, but now after watching your video i think i have more answers to go with Invisalign:) Believe it or not, it really also comes down to DUE DILIGENCE! The trade-off for being able to eat more freely, brush/clean better, aesthetics outweighs the nuisance of ceramic protruding brace heads, possible gum irritation...etc. I think now I'm closer to the former. And after watching SDC videos.......i will stay away from that crap! Thank You!!!
as someone in their late 20s that just got metal braces for the first time, your channel has helped a ton with answers to my lingering questions. thank you!
Ah that’s amazing. I’m so happy to have been able to help with your journey! We always here for ya
If you're getting retainers post braces and they break, get them redone so your teeth don't shift around.
Are braces driving you mad?
Me too. I used braces when i was 24. I watch every single of his video before getting one. Ease the anxiety
Same!!
Are there extra costs if I want to use clear aligned after the metal braces treatment?
My experience with Spark aligners is that it doesn't hurt at all. Compared with the metal braces I had as a kid, that hurted A LOT the first week after they changed the wire, I think this clear braces is nothing compared to that.
Is there additional cost on switching with Invisalign?
You used the H word 😱 I think you meant “minor discomfort”
stuck in the 1-2 day period between switching trays and i swear i feel my teeth shifting 😭😭 the pain is no joke
Braces are cute
Ohhh I didn’t think of that!! Good job getting done with it in the pandemic !!!
I’m in the same boat like you. Had braces as teenager and now in my mid 30s got them again. People don’t know I have them because of the mask 😂😂
How much did it costs you the braces for 11 months ?
I'm in the same boat... didnt wear my retainers. Didn't realize it's a forever thing. Then had my wisdom teeth out and. Now all my teeth slid where the retainers no longer even fit in my mouth 😢
Thanks for making this! As someone with Damon braces who’s not a teenager, I was constantly asked why I didn’t get Invisalign. It’s a personal decision and I had been told I was a great candidate for Invisalign. Ultimately, I didn’t trust myself to follow through with the Invisalign if it got too painful. With the metal braces you have no choice.
There you go! Exactly. You just need to know you!
Same here! Been a week with Damon braces too.. cause I can't trust myself to discipline with Invisalign routine... 😬😬 Hope it worth it..
Please can I have your number so you can guide me though this
Hi is this your first time wearing braces? Do you have crowns or implants prior to get braces?
I’ve been wearing Invisalign for 6 months so far. I don’t really feel much pain (only the first day that I change tray, but not a lot) and I love that it’s removeable!! I had a few crooked teeth and now it’s straight! It really boasted my confidence because i hated smiling with my teeth looking like that. Also it was only 300 dollars more than regular braces, which is why I went with it.
Oh yeah only 300 dollars more.. not a lot at all! 😄
How is the procress?

It is a hassle i even bring a tooth brush to work and brush my teeth even after i eat so there goes my break 😭
@@eatate4 you really don't need to brush your teeth after every meal, just wait 10-15 minutes after a meal to put them back in, to let your saliva clean your mouth

I've had my braces for almost two years and never felt pain by using this trick:
If you need your rubber bands put them on right after they tighten your braces so whenever it starts to hurt you can take them off and you feel a relief. And it tricks your mind so that you won't have pain anymore.
When do you put back the rubber band?
great idea☺☺

Are you able to have chips with braces? What kind of snacks are you allowed to have?
So with braces you don’t have to clean your teeth?!?! All the food stuck in it 😅 no thanks…I’ll for Invisalign then 😬
I'm 56 and after having crooked teeth my entire life, I decided I wanted straight teeth in my final act!

Same here 😭 wish I went for regular braces and not invisalign ☹😔

After a few weeks I become very accustomed to it and had no more difficulty.
Chewing feels strange when you take them off as your bite pattern changes.
You’re forced to really step up your dental hygiene because you don’t want all that food in your teeth while you have the trays in.
I never would go through metal braces so I’m glad Invisalign was an option for me.
Great video.
i had braces when i was in middle school and didn’t wear my retainers so now i’m about to start Invisalign in 3 weeks and i’m excited to fix my mistakes!
Just did the same thing. I feel a little restricted on Invisalign with food , but its forced me to get use to wearing retainers for the future
I’m in the same boat. I’ve had Invisalign now for six months and I have three months left. If I could do it again I would just get metal braces I feel like Invisalign is more of a hassle. I definitely will remember to wear my retainers this time
How do you feel about them now?
Yes please, video about different dental concerns (i.e., crowding, spacing, overbite, etc.) and which method (invisalign or braces) is better.
And underbite 😊
Invisalign didn't exist when I had my braces!
I got metal braces 10 months ago and I love the results thus far. My teeth are already strait now it’s just time to close all the gaps especially the field goal in the front
Ah that’s amazing ! Lol field goal. Never heard that one before but I’m so glad you’re having a great experience !

How much did it cost? I’m 32 and needing some
Thank you for this video, I’m glad I saw it.
Love ya

My orthodontist has braces and Invisalign that are the same price.
@@yourpurpose5548 i heard from a dentist that they should be about the same price at a good practice
How long did you use Invisalign and how much did it cost compared to braces?
@@nationalhamleague5352 I had them for 6 or 7 months, and they were maybe $1000 more than braces.

@@TrishtheNatural yes I agree I know I won’t end up wearing them as much as I need to, then I will be disappointed with the result 🤦♀️

You are so helpful. I’m 55 and I started my journey today. Thanks for all your help
The real question is, what's more disgusting? Avoiding a dentist for 20 years or crapping your pants when a dentist is mentioned? 😄
I currently have Invisalign. The whole process has been great so far ☺️
Does it hurt

Now I’m on my retainers.

braces are superior
Question from another adult in the UK looking into braces. How much do they cost and do you have to pay everything upfront?
As another adult in the UK, I'm also very interested in how much it cost you. I've had metal braces in the past but due to my own negligence there's some overbite and movement that needs to be corrected.
I love the visible braces too. My favor was the pearl color.
Please tell me they didn’t extract any teeth
@@POKEFAN023 I didn’t have any extractions. 6 months out of braces now!
Thanks!

(personally, i am a lot more confident after having my braces) though of course there's no need to do anything if you dont want to
hope this helped :)
Please make a video about which types of things braces are better for and what Invisalign is better for.

A video on which scenarios each are better for would be great!
Hey, I have missing adult laterals too but I’m still undergoing treatment. How did your case end up???

Didn't have a choice. The doc said my case was too bad for invisalign. Glad I went to an orthodontist instead of smiles direct.

Ah, I see! Thank you for explaining. :)
I had metal braces as a teen and now I have Invisalign retainers. Invisalign is so much more comfortable than regular retainers.
I got braces because it was cheaper, I would like to have some fun with color ties, and I wouldn't want to forget putting in/ changing out trays whereas I don't have a choice with braces
exactly!
Same for me.
@@MeghanF93 thank u so much for the advice!!

@@amkii2 Yes, my initial sets made me slur for sometime. I am used to talking with my aligners now so I don't face such issues anymore. Once when I had to talk a lot during a presentation I ended up with minor injuries on my tongue as it rubbed against the edge of the aligner.
@@SM-hn5le Thank you, good info!
Exactly invisalign is horrible in many ways
I’ve had my metal braces for 2.5 months so far & I’m surprised at how much movement I’ve experienced already! My orthodontist offers Invisalign & traditional braces at the same price bc they base the cost on the treatment duration, not the method. Is that common? Also, I have an over jet & so I opted for braces since I was told they would not be able to correct it with Invisalign. Have you ever corrected a poor, misaligned bite with clear aligners vs braces?
I wear Invisalign and have elastics. They do the same as braces but are just invisible
I have a over-jet and they said I could do Invisalign… I got them 3 days ago..
I also have overbite. They told me both braces and invisalign are options. I opted invisalign, hope it works.
I’m looking into to at 25. I’m based in NY, curious which dentist you ended up choosing
Good choice, please don’t get your teeth extracted
5:39 they’re all over my teeth not just 2 or 3 teeth like they’re advertised
One thing you didn't touch up on is bite problems- Can invisalign correct open bite/overbite/underbite? How about lingo-braces?
Thank you so much for your videos, they're really informative and fun to watch!
Yup! Both Invisalign and lingual braces can be used to correct bites
Thank you!
Maybe you could make a video about how exactly that happens without using elastics? That'll be great!
@@DrGregAsatrian what about overjet cases? Does Invisalign take longer for treatment, because I assume traditional braces forces more pressure on the teeth
Thanks Dr. Greg! Great explanation. Deciding whether or not to get on the invisalign train! This was helpful.
I have my Invisalign consultation next week, and this definitely made me feel better about it. Thank you for the video!
As a teenager I remember I enjoyed having braces so much, I was weird about it and NEVER complained. I was very grateful beyond words could say. In fact didn't want them to be taken off because I liked the bling! Ahhhahaha! 😂
Are you Jamaican ? Lol
You crazy
How much did it hurt? Cause i am choosing!
@@emilyfisch7098 it hurts, it’s hurts a lot the day after
@@emilyfisch7098 Personally, only a couple teeth were just a little sore the first 4 days. Other than that, it was smooth sailing from there!!
I just got the metal braces two months ago! I’m in my late 20s and cared more about effectiveness and price. What ain’t broke don’t fix it!
My teeth are still in disarray and I’m now planning to do Invisalign.
whyyyy is dental work soooo unaffordable in America?!
