  • A friend discovered a tree had fallen on our cabin and emailed us with photos. After we arrived at the cabin with needed tools and materials we set about attempting to repair the damage to the cabin.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

Amazing. You did a fantastic job. The spruce is so very useful...! Tree on roof is a "worst night mare" but you solved every challenge. Must persevere and keep our sense of humor.

Lonny if you ever want to make a new piece of wood look like it's old and weathered. Just take some steel shavings and place them in vinegar for and hour. Then strain it take the vinegar and wipe on or brush on. It will turn gray quickly. God bless

Good Lord, life could be rough when you go at it alone. I am surprised you had help to get out there, but no one was willing to stay and help you lift that heavy 2x6 up in place. But as usual, Lonnie handles the crisis with dignity and resolve. Good job sir! Well done!

Notice some advice to cut down all the nearby trees for prevention. See you not doing it. Wise man.

I have a feeling that he has seen other challenges! ;-) Kudos from Canada. Darn right ! When there is a will, there is a way. I think clamping the roof that was bowed upward , down to the 2x6 was a much better choice than trying to jack the 2x6 up. Clearly the plywood was warped upward.

Up here, what we call a "deadman" is a short length of log or branch that has a rope tied to the middle and is buried in snow, dirt or sand to use as an anchor for something such as a tent.

I have always said the day I don't learn something new is the day I will die. I come here to learn about survival, but this video isn't about that. You have, however, saved my life today. Need to start a nail but have to hold onto something with one hand? Look at what Lonnie did here. He wrapped his hand over the top of the hammer and held the nail between his fingers with the head of the nail against the side of the hammer. Then he just sort of slapped the board with this arrangement. It was enough to start the nail. With that much snow, unless you have a reliable method like this, you are going to lose a lot of nails.
    Thanks Lonnie.
