- Sometimes what works on the page doesn’t quite transfer to the screen, and this is often true of superhero costumes. While comic books portray an ultra-stylized world where bright colors and outlandish outfits work just fine, those outfits might not work as well on the big screen -- especially if the filmmakers are going for a darker or more realistic take on the characters. This has led DC to change up their heroes’ look a bit in their recent films, in which you can see a much darker take on Superman’s iconic outfit or Aquaman’s oft-mocked getup. Let’s take a look at the real reason why DC changed how its heroes look.

I think the CW redesign was bad.... the smallville one was ok. He has he same one as hawkgirl's. It's been her design for quite a while so it just looks kinda feminine.

He credit the movies with ditching Superman's red trunks, but they were just copying what the comics had already done back in 2010.

I believe the changes were because of legal restrictions, when there was a battle between DC/Warner Bros and the Siegel heirs. They needed to change at least 20% of the costume...the solution was to remove the trunks. There were other restrictions at the time. I guess even after winning the battle, Warner Bros decided to just stick with the trunk-less Superman.
Honestly, I wish they wouldn'tve because now Superman is just wearing a blue body suit. I mean, here's NO WAY to coordinate the colors now.
2011, actually, with that New 52 bullshit. -.- Seriously... fuck that shit... and if you want to go even further back, we could touch on Superman Red/Blue back in the 90's, or the black regeneration suit, which also did not have the trunks.
I think they should take cues from the birdy the mighty anime, and make it more like plates or something. Something with definition. And It looks body painted... why. Dude looks almost too muscular in the arms, that stands out too much. It doesn't look like armor at all. And I think they could have put red down there like a crotch piece type thing, just like a triangular plate or something.

One can lampshade Black Canary's fashion sense by explaining it as a conscious choice to attract attention to her legs. Which is a bad place to focus one's attention when fighting someone trained in boxing by Wildcat.

Dressing as a prostitute from the 1990s really doesn't make sense... her outfit reminds of something you'd see in a Deathwish movie or the video game Streets Of Rage. But for more realistic storytelling, especially for the modern day, dressing the way she does really makes no sense. :/
Black canary has a skimpy outfit because she wants men to judge her as "just a woman" or even, as a streetwalker. in the comics she is even judged by the mostly male League and goes on to hand batman his ass and beats the flash. in a non serious sparring match. Canary is a bad ass who uses sexism to her advantage

I love how people get so ticked off about Wonder Woman wearing the colors of the American flag, in the comics it is Amazon tradition for their ambassador to wear the colors and symbols of the nation they are going to. Wonder Woman first went to America so she wore the stars and stripes, if she had went to the United Kingdom first it would have been the Union Jack.
Because that's totally not just a lame excuse to shove a character into patriotic drag.
When I think of Wonder Woman, I don't think of some patriot like Caption America, but an Amazonian Warrior, with Ancient Greek mythology

I really like Katie Cassidy, I personally loved her as Ruby on Supernatural... however... let's be honest, she doesn't have much of a figure and she is pretty thin, so seeing her in fishnets and a tight black leather bodysuit wasn't going to go over very well... I think she'd look pretty silly. :/

Sadly for the character, in a backstory arc, it was revealed that her victims weren't criminals at all, but she used secret Venusian Pretty Potion Power to manipulate them. The readers didn't like that idea, and she was canceled but remains alive in the hearts of every Feminist.

The armored flash look was horrible, I also can't stand the DCEU version of Superman, it's like they took him and said "lets make him more bat-manish so they can fight in the next movie" and did that. Also the Superman Returns issue was not the costume, it was the fact they tried to make it a romance film first.

I like the material his suit seems made out of, but I hate how it looks for different reasons. It doesn't look good being all one color like that, the chest part would look better if it was white, and he had golden wrists and feet/boots. The chin thing is fuckin wierd. but the cw version of the flash is so much cooler, why didnt you feature that?
1) having armor for a speedster: if I am running at super speeds and something like dust particles or debris hits the flash, yes, he can heal, but to have armor that can deflect it would allow his recovery to focus only on damage from direct attacks from opponents.
2) weight of armor: new materials are lightweight and nearly indestructible. search only and you'll see that there are shirts/suits/pants/etc made that can withstand gunshots that don't weigh that much more than normal clothing. expensive? yes, but I'm sure a speedster who can learn and comprehend at super speeds could learn how to earn bitcoin and invest to counter the cost of an expensive outfit.
3) the fibers connecting the armor: if I were a speedster, I would have that as well as they would allow for give and retraction when accelerating and decelerating at super speeds.
Those are the only 3 things I can think of so fare for why they did what they've done to the suit. I think it's cool. I like the CW's version better, but just like any comic multiverse, I like when the design of costumes diversify a bit.

While most have reason to be "updated" to be "more realistic," I think it is being lost that these characters are larger than life. Sometimes, we get so bogged down with "realism" that we forget the premise and powers of most superheroes are either simply impossible, silly, or more danger than aid! However, the DCEU's Flash suit for Ezra Miller is nonsensical. THIS is, as the vid pointed out, a character for whom the sleek full-body spandex would not only make sense but be a bonus."But, the other guys have armor-y looking stuff on!" Yes, but each comic series has its own flavor. Some are well-suited to dark grimness and other demand a brighter look and tone. The JLA come together - in their own lives' spare times - to protect Earth. Differences.

5:20 One of the MAIN reasons why Hawkgirl was in the Justice League animated show, was because the producers wanted more than one female superhero in the show. They didn't want Wonder Woman to be the only one. They were really trying to diversify the show, which is another reason why the show had John Stewart be the Green Lantern for the show. I remember reading about all of this when the show first debuted.

i think they should have done something based off of injustice 2 for her, the costumes were more practical but still had a little bit of the fishnet design and looked cool, and they probably would have looked good on a real person. in some of the costumes she was almost completely covers in leather/Armour but still had fishnet detailing in it, it couldn't have been any worse than her costume in the show, anyways.

What always amused me was John Wesley Shipp's costume on the the 1990's Flash series. It looked fine and everything but I swear a lot of the time it looked like it was made out of felt. It just had that felt-like texture. :)
I think it makes sense for Flash to wear an armored suit. He is lightning fast. That would probably tear or burn out normal skin-tight fabric. Also being fast doesn't make you bulletproof, but an armor will. Not to mention, it looks really cool.
The Flash needs a windscreen for his face ( goggles and something to cover his mouth - all that wind-trash stinging him when he runs).
Imagine all the bugs that get in his teeth D: My dad rides a motorcycle to work sometimes and his helmet is always covered in the little things.

The Flash's out fit looks like an expensive Comic Con fan made costume.
Supermans and Batmans outfits match the "New 52" outfits from the comics. Wonder Womans, Cyborg and Flash are also based around this. The only one that doesn't is Aquamans, but that's a good thing.
I love the Classic Uniform of Superman he should be a person who doesn't care about his appearance and only care for the safety of his fellow man that's what Superman should be!

True. The Flash's main advantage is his speed, that armor would slow him down. The suit in CW Flash looks like it is comfortable to run in and is made of a material that can stand the speed.
Hmm, assuming that Ezra Millers flash is more likely to be the flash in the future... I'm just speculating btw... uhm maybe he found a material more modernized and lightweight metal that is much more durable than a spandex suit? idk, I personally think it looks like a power rangers suit but... reasons?

It might. His super power makes all of his body mass superfast, but clothing doen't have that superpower so he'd have to carry it around and accelerate and decelerate the armor
Like Havar said the weight is an issue, but also by not having a smoother suit the armor will also so him down due to drag.
He doesnt actually just run fast he manipulates the speed force so id imagine itd act like a field so anything within the vacinity of his field would be manipulated aswell

Maybe Ezra Miller's Flash outfit is the worst choice for an obvious reason: A character who relies only on his speed shouldn't wear something that makes him heavier thus slower. Runners wear tights for a reason: its low weight allows them to exploit what they are designed for: Speed. Also skin tight spandex reduces friction which allows to become even faster.
You do know there is such a thing as light metals that are stronger than titanium right? Like so light it can be placed on a dandelion and it would be unharmed. Boeing.
And are those metals as elastic as spandex? No. Anyway none of those metals will be as light as tights. And like I said before for a character who depends only on his speed every little amount less of weight counts. More when (in the comics too) the faster he moves his mass increases exponentially to suposedly infinite making his body harder than any armor he could carry. At top speed he can lend a punch capable to KO even Superman with very little damage to his own bones. It's real physics but has happened in the comics too. Some strange guy had that idea. I think his name was Albert Einstein.

They also took a drug that boosted their natural strength and durability to be able to fight Superman, everyone had extra battle armor.
However, it make no sense outside of that context.
Well, the DCU doesn't exactly have a great track record so far.

Well, now that the Justice League movie came out, we did get an explanation for Flash's armor. Apparently it's made out of super heat-resistant plates that protect him from friction burns.
This is actually a long standing gripe that the more physics-oriented DC fans have had with the character when they noted that a character moving as fast as the Flash would burn up from friction with the atmosphere. The comics waved this off by saying it's the "Speed Force aura" that protects the Flash from friction burn. In fact there was what-if storyline in the comics where a villain kills him by disabling Flash's connection to the speed force in mid-run causing Flash to instantly burst into flames.
Gal Gadot's costume really did DC a lot of justice. Get it? Justice?!

Wonder Woman's "All American" look was explained in the 70's series pilot. It all had to do with ambassadorships, wearing the symbol of the country she would be assisting. Pretty good reason and kept simple.

I agree with the Flash costume. Armor wouldn't be so bad, they should've redesigned it at least. Cyborg is understandable, he's a freaking cyborg. Only CGI can help him.
louisalectube Cyborg looks like he got scrap metal for limbs and flash looks like he stumbled through a hot rod auto show. Cyborg has too many little bits of metal that he looks like a mini transformer and Flash's outfit has no symmetry or aesthetic.
You are Disgusting considering it's something he designed himself, I like it. He's supposed to get an upgrade. Besides, the leather Grant wears makes 0 sense. That would burst into flames if he could really go that fast. Ezra's is at least made of parts scraped by NASA. Don't get me wrong, it works for the show, but Ezra's makes more sense.
I appreciate the backstory DC is creating for Ezra's Flash costume, but it simply doesn't look good. I have problems with Grant's costume, too, but I think his cowl looks great. Of the costumes DC has designed for Justice League, Flash and Cyborg look the worst.
metimoteo the thing is, it doesn't have to look good right now. It has to be functional. The hope is that when he gets his actual suit, it can be both.
The thing with Black Canary is that she's not a heavy hitter like some of the others on this list. She's acrobatic and quick so it makes sense for her costume to be light and allow for a lot of movement. Especially since she does a lot of kicking, having her legs free just makes sense. The costume in The CW show looks good as protective gear but you can tell she can hardly move in it.
Also The CW Hawk people are basically wearing Wolverine's mask.
The movie version of Aquaman actually does a great job using tattoos to echo the cartoon origins without being campy.

Always disappointed in the direction various producers are taking The Flash in... I don't like the CW Flash with the 'Team' and 'leather-look' outfit. The new movie costume is odd and clumsy looking. The TV show with John Wesley Shipp was closest to the look I'd like to see. Mostly true to the 'Silver Age' Flash but sans yellow boots. Carmine Infantino designed that uniform for DC magazine and it was perfect. Carmine was a student of practicality and his design reflects that, right down to the soles of The Flash's Boots. I prefer the CW costume over the one in the movies that they have shown so far... seems like they are trying to go this Injustice costume look, which is great for a video game, but I dont want to see the Flash in some painted red stormtroopers costume. I know I cant stand the Batman costume now, it looks so weird and makes Affleck look 75 lbs heavier, the texture looks like its made out of paper mache and then painted gray

No, wonder woman's outfit is because she was the Amazonian representative to the US during WW1. According to Amazonian traditions, the battle outfit's color/pattern scheme is to reflect the nation she will be going to. Thus, the stars and stripes.
The movie neglects this part of the origin completely, making the spy washed on shore to be from London and not America. Thus, her keeping her color scheme in the DCU actually makes no sense lore-wise, as her armor scheme makes no sense. Either she should be wearing traditional Amazonian armor, or traditional God armor, or armor in the scheme of the British flag. But she does none of these things. So while the armor fits her comic scheme well, it makes no sense regarding the lore given to her in the movie, while the armor makes sense in respect to her comic lore.
Regarding actress choice, Gadot is not of the right ethnicity (lore-wise either Caucasian or South America make sense, no others), but this is okay as she portrays the sexiness, the beauty, the strength, and the compassion of the character on the screen well. I just wish that Gadot was not so politically charged and so pro-Isreal and so anti-Palestine. (I know she is Israeli, but come on - don't go publicly supporting Israelis kicking innocent Palestinians out of their homes; either say both sides are wrong or don't say anything - you are a freaking public figure that children will look up to now for gods sake).
If you think about it, it does make some sense for the Flash to have some kind of armor when you consider things like flies in the air that he may accidentally hit, or if he's running in the rain or snow, since he would be hitting all of these mostly unavoidable things at super speed.
