    Hello Joe;
    With the help of Don's videos, a lot of reading and studying I recently passed the basic exam - first time around :-)
    At the risk of upsetting some people I really think a license is a good idea not only to fly safely but to also understand the air space we are sharing where major problems can occur if something goes wrong. For example imagine what our roads would be like if people did not have to pass a drivers license.
    I feel that holding a license informs people I know the rules and how to fly safely.
    Even though I only own a micro drone, I tend to stay away from flying around people as I do not want to get into a discussion in particular on peoples privacy.
    As a retired senior I was able to write the exam, I do not think there is an age limit.
    I read a couple of things about parks 1) parks we designed for for people to enjoy i.e. ATVs and snowmobile's need to use designated trails 2) animals can be injured by a drone or injured by attacking drones so it is for the safety of the animals that we need to be careful whenever we are in their environment.
    I would encourage everyone to at least read the material for the basic license.
    Thanks for the video, stay safe

    It is my personal opinion that TC does not want ANYONE to fly UAVs in Canada. That is the reason that they built the online test for the Basic Certificate the way they did so that there would be failures at least for the first time writers. Now authorities could go ahead and slap heavy fines on those that fly with no certificate or licence. These tests are nothing more than money generators for our Canadian Government, and you must write tests anually to keep your paperwork current. We all are being punished for the actions of a very few idiots that have flown near (or within) airport boundaries or other locations where they had no business being in the first place.

    Hi Joe! I'm a Calgary flyer (In the country mainly) but I have a Mini2 sub 250gram and the NAV app allows me to fly even downtown where it's red. Obviously, you still have to abide by logical rules of voyeurism and flying over people and such, but the app allows it. I haven't flown downtown yet, but I live in the beltline and the app shows "allowed". My main question is, is it really worth it, or is there any advantage, to getting the basic license, even though I don't really need it?
    I took it the other day with no studying and got a 47%, learned a few things earlier today form Don's channel, but just wondering if it's really needed since I'm under 250grams.

    • @JoeMansLand
      @JoeMansLand  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question and I had that question too when I moved to the Beltline. Don's video on my drone playlists goes more into micro drones, but long story short you do not need a permit for sub 250. I would recommend using the simulator and being familiar with the rules that apply to heavier drones but you are good to go on flying without a permit in Canada with the sub 250 drone, just make sure you check your local bylaws on micro drone rules as they change from city to City

I want to know if I can fly the drone in the downtown of different cities, near ports and waterfronts, additionally, I want to know if I can add to a Vlog video (where I speak) some drone shots as a support to make the video look cooler. I don't think it's really a big deal to fly without a permit myself as long as the drone is within your line of sight and your not being intrusive towards people or businesses. I think the main reason towards such stiff finds is because people nowadays want to get into everyone elses businesses and drones can do just that plus transport illegal goods like drugs,guns.

    Hi Joe! Great video! I live in Calgary and I just got my license about two months ago, but I'm still wondering how does this rules apply speaking of real estate industry? Using drones for real estate has become very popular and I was actually thinking on suggesting to my boss we could use a small drone to get nice shots of different dealerships (I work for an automotive group in marketing). But then when I read the laws I get confused. Do you know if it's illegal to fly a drone not like super high but just to get nice shots of the dealerhips and the lot to show the inventory from above? Thank you.

    • @JoeMansLand
      @JoeMansLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank so much and that is a great question. IT first depends on your permit and the final destination for the video. Drone footage used for commercial use requires the advanced permit. Also with basic operations you can not fly over people. The first ting to check is to see where the area you want to drone is on the nrc.canada.ca/en/drone-tool/ as there are many sites in Calgary where you can not. If the area you want to cover can't, I recommend building a budget crane with an action cam as a potential solution.

      I would recommend getting special permission for going out of VLOS even with an FPV, according to transport Canada," Beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations are for specific and defined operating environments. We can authorize these operations when an operational risk assessment has been completed to mitigate potential risks to people and aircraft sharing that airspace.
      This allows operators to explore new drone applications that can take advantage of Canada’s vast geography. Drones have the potential to serve isolated regions, lower population densities, and large pockets of uncontrolled airspace with minimal airspace traffic."
