Too many how-to videos for drone beginners run fifty minutes to an hour. You have condensed what I need to know to get started, down to twelve minutes. There’s a reason why I named my channel, “TenMinuteTrips.” There are way too many creators “droning” on and on about video settings before they even get to the basics of flying. I just purchased my first drone at the ripe young age of 67. I haven’t even mastered editing videos, let alone caring about dolly shots using a drone. My attention span is somewhat…WAIT! Was that a squirrel?!!! Great job, Jake! I subscribed!
Very clear lesson, Kudos to you. I'm tempted to get a drone and am studying the recommendations of experienced guys like yourself, Jake. I have a lifetime of being an unqualified fixed-wing pilot (can do the flying and understand the primary instruments but not radio or navigation) and think I will really enjoy this in my retirement. Excellent vid for beginners- thanks. I've got about 200 hours flight time and totaled my Mavic Pro twice. All good. One suggestion for beginners is to learn to watch battery usage. It can be freaky for a beginner when the drone returns to home automatically because of low remaining battery. If you have trees or obstacles nearby, the experience can be stressful because the drone is very difficult to manually control in RTH mode. Keep up the great work!
Yes, Neil! Watching battery usage. Most UAS apps allow you to set a warning when you battery life is getting low - often with a voice saying, “Warning. Battery life is low.”
Buying a drone at 71, may not be a good idea but with your guidance I'm going to take the plunge , and hopefully have fun and get out more to exercise , even if it is just chasing after the drone lol.

I'm working on my part 107 right now and once I get it, I'll be revisiting your channel and determining if my instinct to buy a Skydio 2 for the feature set (tracking) is best for a first drone. After watching your other videos I'm tempted to get a 2S just learn so it's less hurt if I crash it bad.
Get the harbor freight drone for a crash course pardon the pun . Only like 50$ and has a camera you use through the app on your phone . Also the remote controler has a mount for your phone

I took your beginners course, Jake. Just wanted to thank you. It really helps to have someone walk step by step through the initial learning curve. And it never hurts to hear the core cautions again. It can make a big difference just to know that everyone (even experienced drone operators) needed lots of practice on the basics and to have a roadmap for what I should be concentrating on and gradually progressing through. I've usually had to improvise, or compensate, for something unexpected at least once during my early flights and it is due to YT creators like yourself that I've been able to adjust and safely deal with the situation (except for one failed hand landing). But as well as building up muscle memory and neural connections, I'm re-watching any YT video with useful info on the Air 2S. I find it important to refer to my drone as an 'aircraft', because it reminds me of the potential hazard and safety issues that I am responsible for avoiding.

Simplest way is to buy a couple of small inexpensive ones at somewhere like Walmart. I got 2 that I have maybe 40.00 invested. The hardest thing is to learn control. So do it on a 20.00 drone. You can fly around the house before stepping up to all of the expensive options. One bad crash and that cash is gone.
Thank you for making this video. Like one of the other commenters I too used to fly RC sailplanes up to 14 1/2 foot wingspan. The concept I am having trouble grasping is that these things turn flat corners where the sailplanes always bank to make the turn. I will find a lonely place with lots of open ground to learn the basics of flying without the distraction of the cell phone display until i get the hang of just flying. Photography can come later. I will make darn sure I know where the RTF button is too. Loren
I got a 70$ drone one day from amizon just to try. I tried flying it a few times, but wasn't good and would lose control a lot. One day I went to a park mext to a lake, and powered up my drone. At some point I lost control and lost it in the lake.
I have crashed mine a few times and in the house I have grabbed it to stop it from crashing into walls as it does not have anything fancy on it. The rotors being plastic don't hurt when you grab it, but if it came towards the eyes I would definitely duck...lol

I was in the same boat. I think the DJI stuff must be the iPhone of the drone world where they do a lot of the work for you. My drone experience was very similar. Great video..I’ve flown mostly toy type drones. I upgraded a little to a HS175D. It flies great and the photos it takes are very good, to me anyway. An issue I have is the glare looking at the app. If it’s sunny I can’t see a thing. This is why I’m considering the Mavic Mini 3 pro. I’m thinking the glare won’t be so bad using the RC controller..But then I fly almost completely line of sight. It’s confusing why these drones fly so far away, because I believe the rule is were suppose to be flying it at a distance we can see it.
You are correct about keeping the drone in line of sight and at a distance where you can actually see it. As far as glare it will be an issue with any controller but there are options for small sun hoods on Amazon etc that really help a lot
If you really getting in the hobby and want a great screen, get yourself a triple tech pro 8 inch drone tablet. You can get them on Amazon. They’re about $800. They’re made specifically for drones they’re super bright about 1200 nits. The other thing is that you can use them for anything else that a tablet can do just like an iPad. This one also has built-in cellular service. If you want it, you don’t have to have it, but the tablet is capable of it. And you will have no problem seeing that at all even indirect, bright sunlight. It’s definitely an investment, but if you get into the drone, hobby scene, the screen is something that’s very very important to me. Matter fact, I don’t really like to fly If I can’t clearly see my screen. You can also use the tablet on all different kinds of drones.
I'm exploring the idea of having a drone and that DJI mini 4k is the one I've settled on and your video gives me confidence that I can fly it safely . I live a mile from the Gulf of Mexico and thinking of the fun flying it out a little ways looking for sharks or whatever .

Bought a helicopter about 15yrs ago, got it 6ins off the ground and it crashed stripping all the teeth off the drive gears, never flew it again Got a drone this xmas doing ok just taking it easy the head mode is very handy as the stick is always backwards or forwards right or left no matter the orientation of the drone
I have an older Autel drone, but I learned they quit making batteries for it, really ticks me off since there's nothing wrong with the unit to begin with. Going to switch to DJI and see how bad they screw they're fan base over after a few years. I'm looking at this very model, thank you for the video..

I just bought a cheap drone never seen a real one. I won't to learn how to hover one before getting it in the air. I want to learn how to move back, forward, side to side before I try anything else. Can't get it to pair so far. I can send it back within the 30 days if I don't have success. It says have the back of drone facing me. My drone is HEYGELO S90

I bought a DJI mini 3 pro, with the DJI RC remote. I'm going to film in Peru and may not have wifi or Bluetooth so I wondered if the RC remote DJI makes will be easy to get good 4k filming clips for my client?

I’d recommend the DJI mini 2. Doesn’t cost too much and flys really well.

I know exactly what you are saying. Same thing is true with telescopes. Some things you can get away with cheap, others you can’t.

Maybe try one of those anti glare screen protectors.

Bought a helicopter about 15yrs ago, got it 6ins off the ground and it crashed stripping all the teeth off the drive gears, never flew it again
Got a drone this xmas doing ok just taking it easy the head mode is very handy as the stick is always backwards or forwards right or left no matter the orientation of the drone
Yeah helicopters are HARD lol

I have an older Autel drone, but I learned they quit making batteries for it, really ticks me off since there's nothing wrong with the unit to begin with.
Going to switch to DJI and see how bad they screw they're fan base over after a few years.

actually technically it would be called yaw: yaw left or yaw right but thats getting hung up on technicalities...

hey when you use your controller to start recording on the right trigger i think it was does the video record on your phone or on a sd card thats on the controller
It does both. It will cache a lower quality video on your phone

You should contact the maker sounds like it might be defective.
Can I ask you a question I have tried to stop my drone but it never stops like when I make it fly it literally goes forward Even though I am not moving my joystick that’s weird😅
You might have to use the opposite motion on the stick to get it to stop

I grew up in Anchorage on the hillside and when I saw this video I thought it looked familiar. I hiked and biked up there all the time!
It’s one of my favorite places on the planet!

I just bought a cheap drone never seen a real one. I won't to learn how to hover one before getting it in the air. I want to learn how to move back, forward, side to side before I try anything else. I am not in a hurry just want to learn how to control it and not slam it on the ground or into a tree. I will watch your video over and over until I get it right. Thank you so much for your video.😊

@@JakeSloan Thank you I will take my time. I tried it the red and blue light on the controller was blinking and the red light on the tail of the drone was blinking. I charged the batteries first. Can't get it to pair so far. I can send it back within the 30 days if I don't have success. It says have the back of drone facing me. My drone is HEYGELO S90

I have been to Scotland twice and LOVED IT. mostly around the Edinburgh area but also a trip up to Castletown which was amazing. I would really like to come back

I bought a DJI mini 3 pro, with the DJI RC remote. I'm going to film in Peru and may not have wifi or Bluetooth so I wondered if the RC remote DJI makes will be easy to get good 4k filming clips for my client?
nice, the drone will film 4k regardless of the remote used. the DJI rc will work just fine

make sure the drone you get does this, not every drone will hover
