I'm so glad you posted this - I had forgotten so much after all these years. Any kids who want to say defense was weak back in the 90s can suck it after watching this. This is what made MJ and the Bulls so tough - having to overcome first the Bad Boys and than the Knicks year in and year out to get to the finals, not only physically but mentally. Imagine Lebron let alone Steph trying to battle this onslaught physically, mentally and emotionally? And you can see why shooting 3s in this Handchecking physical era the way they do today would be impossible. 1. Forgot how much both MJ and Pip were brutalized and how tough both were. 2. Great to see X-man and Starcks in particular go at MJ. 3. Loved the line attributed to Dick Versace - N.B.A = No Babies Allowed! It's the exact opposite today with LBJ constantly crying about fouls 4. Doc Rivers - they said he had Academy Awards level acting, lol. 5. The NBA was so much more competitive - the Bulls were not a lock to win even the east. Meanwhile now Cleveland and GSW or automatic shoe ins at the finals. What a joke. With this physicality and no 3 sec def rule where everyone could stand forever in the middle, if Lebron tried to run down the lane like he does today against the Knicks of the 90s, guys like Xman, Oakley and Mason would pound him down into the ground every time. Of course he would have learned to be a full time post player but the game would have a lot tougher for him and he wouldn't be heralded as much as an unprecedented athlete for his size as he wouldn't have been able to run unimpeded full court and play mostly in the half court set. If these games were played today, every player on the court would've been ejected twice. Holy shit - today players flop including in the playoffs while back then it was gladiatorial combat. You’re a veteran leader and defending champion that knows the game inside and out, but then ALSO still in your 20’s ready to dunk over anyone when that opportunity presents itself. He dropped 64 on Shaq’s head-his career second best, he dropped 57 and 10ast, 54 and 13reb, 51 and 11reb with ZERO turnovers (50+ points with zero turnovers in insane), and I don’t even know how many more 50 point games in that year-long stretch. He had so many of his best games around 29. Jordan from 27-29 was just completely un-fuck-wit-able.. Feb 1990-Feb 1993. Nobody that ever stepped on the hardwood could touch him at that point. No one at all. Dunkin’ on both 7’7 tallest players to ever do play MULTIPLE times each. He was just ridiculous in his prime; at his peak. Like it wasn’t even fair.

It's incredible how much the game has changed. Now all plays are designed to get open 3's. In this era ever play is designed to go inside and you got Oakley, Ewing, and McDaniel ready to pummel you for every basket. That's why I can't stand players today complaining that they are worn out from playing too many games. All they do is shoot 3's.

runner6500 - this exactly. He'd have learned to operate in the post and develop post up moves but that sauntering into the paint unimpeded like he does today was not happening. If he tried that with these Knicks, Oakley and Mason would have elbowed him into the ground. I would have loved to watch Mason guard LBJ. Obviously he couldn't keep up on a scoring level but I think he'd have given him a hard time with his defense.

Watched this video just to compare the NBA game from today and what is like on the 90's, well no doubt!! This 90's era worth watching for. No biased at all this video tells you how physical it was back in the 90's
Yet it was already noticeably less physical than in the era of them Detroit Bad Boy Pistons of the late 80s. This was why the early 90s Knicks couldn't quiet match the physicality of the late 80s Pistons, cause of all the flagrant fouls that were now being called that were play on hard fouls when late 80s Detroit was doing it. It's not because Charles Oakley was any less of a fighter than Rick Mahorn, or Anthony Mason was any less physical than Dennis Rodman by nature or anything.
The times the Knicks and Bulls played each other in the post-season in the early 90s were some of the best playoff series of all time. Growing up in NY as a kid I was obviously a Knicks fan and I hated losing to the bulls, but like most other kids of that era, MJ was my idol and hero.. so I was always torn lol. This series sums up perfectly why the 90's NBA was the golden age of the game, in my opinion. You don't see this kind of intensity any more or these kinds of rivalries. I mean, I'm still a huge basketball fan and I watch as many games as I can... but I laugh anytime someone tells me the NBA is better than it's ever been. Maybe financially and popularity wise, sure. But as far as the game and the competition? No way. I still go back and watch the 92 semis and the 93 conference finals between these two teams. So physical. So back and forth. The Knicks really pushed the bulls hard. Harder than most teams that's for sure. Sadly the Knicks are a laughing stock now a days. It was rare to see the bulls pushed to 7 games during the Jordan era, but the Knicks managed to get to that 7th game in 92. The bulls blew them out of the water in that game 7 though lol. Sometimes I wonder how Jordan's legacy would've been affected had he lost that game 7 to NY. If he would've retired a year early, etc.

there's this myth going around that either the 97 or 98 knicks could've beaten one of those Bulls team but some players were injured or something...I don't believe it though, the Bulls were simply better.

Marv Albert is the best basketball play by play ever. His voice, feel of the game, and quick dry humour are all top notch. On top of that he never tires you because he doesn't force or fake excitement like Kevin Harlin does with his made up voice every 10 seconds.
I remember EVERY single game betwen these teams...even when Jodan left, the '94 series had SO MUCH intensity, rivalry, players dying for their tems, for every ball... you had to watch this at the adge of your seat. Imagine Caws or Warriors against these teams with these kind of rules...it would be clean sweep for Bulls or Knicks, then Cavs, Warriors or any of todays teamst would go home to sit in the dark corner of the room, cry and then stop playing in the NBA. Something like that. '90s was something else.

There was way more flopping then. What are you talking about. And it made the game a ton better, not worse. The Knicks & Bulls didn't have floppers on their rosters, but on the Pacers you had Reggie Miller. On the Jazz, the whole freaking team did it. Charles Barkley could flop as well as anybody. How about Vladi Divac? The game was just way more diverse than overall. You had some teams that played really physical like the Knicks, Pistons, Heat; football defense. But you had teams that would pick-&-roll you to death like the Jazz, or teams that would beat you w/ freakish athleticism like the Bulls or Sonics. Some teams would just really space you out like the Suns or Magic, whereas a team like the Suns, Lakers or Nuggets would run-up-the-score w/ their fast-breaking explosions. So you had all sorts of different styles, unlike now where everybody just grabs an inbound pass and dribbles up to fire 3s. Then you had Phil Jackson's triangle that would methodically pick apart your defense, kind of like Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense in football. You had the Pistons, who just kicked your ass. But I disagree w. you of that flopping and hard play have to be mutually exclusive. I don't feel them to necessarily be mutually exclusive at all. There are different ways to play hard, I do wished that they allowed hand-checking back into the game, but in the game's organic state, flopping's just as much a part of basketball as shooting, dribbling, passing, stealing, blocking, running a certain set play, footwork, or anything else. Just like some guys try to shoot good but can't, most guys can't flop successfully either.
On the other hand, if you brought Anthony Mason to a game these days, he’d be lying on the floor. Unless you really committed yourself to the weekend at Bernie’s routine
Some of these fouls that weren't even being called flagrants, were rougher than the Andrew Bynum one on JJ Barea, that yielded Bynum a 5 game suspension.
This brings back alot of great memories. I'm a die hard bulls fan, but I would say there aren't enough knicks plays, it's mostly bulls. This rivalry was so competitive and close there should be an even amount of plays from both teams. But, still a very good video nonetheless. For younger fans, this rivalry was about the bulls talent vs the knicks toughness. Fun to watch.

You have to watch this with a "Bitter Sweet" taste in your mouth! This was great aggressive basketball, when men played men and left it all on the floor but how ironic is this that this is the very reason why you don't see this today! Folks he went to Miami and went to the finals four straight times winning two, that's not spectacular, and if the Spurs hadn't choked in the final minute it would have been only one win out of four trips! Lebron James is good, but if you compare him to Jordan in these two videos you see that Jordan has something Lebron doesn't...The Attribute of a Killer! The Bulls, Knicks, Heat of this era would destroy the Heat, and Oklahoma, team of this era! The 92 playoffs were historic!!!

It's incredible how much the game has changed. Now all plays are designed to get open 3's. In this era ever play is designed to go inside and you got Oakley, Ewing, and McDaniel ready to pummel you for every basket. That's why I can't stand players today complaining that they are worn out from playing too many games. All they do is shoot 3's.

As you can see young folks, LeBron wouldn't be allowed to bull rush to the basket, using his body to knock people out of his way. Too many tough guys.
runner6500 - this exactly. He'd have learned to operate in the post and develop post up moves but that sauntering into the paint unimpeded like he does today was not happening. If he tried that with these Knicks, Oakley and Mason would have elbowed him into the ground. I would have loved to watch Mason guard LBJ. Obviously he couldn't keep up on a scoring level but I think he'd have given him a hard time with his defense.

Watched this video just to compare the NBA game from today and what is like on the 90's, well no doubt!! This 90's era worth watching for. No biased at all this video tells you how physical it was back in the 90's
Yet it was already noticeably less physical than in the era of them Detroit Bad Boy Pistons of the late 80s. This was why the early 90s Knicks couldn't quiet match the physicality of the late 80s Pistons, cause of all the flagrant fouls that were now being called that were play on hard fouls when late 80s Detroit was doing it. It's not because Charles Oakley was any less of a fighter than Rick Mahorn, or Anthony Mason was any less physical than Dennis Rodman by nature or anything.
The times the Knicks and Bulls played each other in the post-season in the early 90s were some of the best playoff series of all time. Growing up in NY as a kid I was obviously a Knicks fan and I hated losing to the bulls, but like most other kids of that era, MJ was my idol and hero.. so I was always torn lol. This series sums up perfectly why the 90's NBA was the golden age of the game, in my opinion. You don't see this kind of intensity any more or these kinds of rivalries. I mean, I'm still a huge basketball fan and I watch as many games as I can... but I laugh anytime someone tells me the NBA is better than it's ever been. Maybe financially and popularity wise, sure. But as far as the game and the competition? No way.
I still go back and watch the 92 semis and the 93 conference finals between these two teams. So physical. So back and forth. The Knicks really pushed the bulls hard. Harder than most teams that's for sure. Sadly the Knicks are a laughing stock now a days. It was rare to see the bulls pushed to 7 games during the Jordan era, but the Knicks managed to get to that 7th game in 92. The bulls blew them out of the water in that game 7 though lol. Sometimes I wonder how Jordan's legacy would've been affected had he lost that game 7 to NY. If he would've retired a year early, etc.

Even though my Knicks could never beat Jordan's Bulls (then again, nobody could) I don't think any other team played them tougher than The Knicks did from 1992-1997. I LOVED this rivalry! So intense, physical, and heated. Nothing better than 90's NBA! Those guys were MEN! Today's players try to act like tough guys with a shit load of stupid tattoos, while the players from the 90's were tough, for real! Today's NBA is soft!

I both hated and respected the hell out of your Knicks back in the day. This coming from a Bulls fan. That rivalry was Ali/Frazier Thrilla in Manila-esque.
there's this myth going around that either the 97 or 98 knicks could've beaten one of those Bulls team but some players were injured or something...I don't believe it though, the Bulls were simply better.
I'll go as far as to say that the 1997 Knicks would've given the Bulls a trendously hard time...but I don't believe that they would've won the series.

Marv Albert is the best basketball play by play ever. His voice, feel of the game, and quick dry humour are all top notch. On top of that he never tires you because he doesn't force or fake excitement like Kevin Harlin does with his made up voice every 10 seconds.

I remember EVERY single game betwen these teams...even when Jodan left, the '94 series had SO MUCH intensity, rivalry, players dying for their tems, for every ball... you had to watch this at the adge of your seat. Imagine Caws or Warriors against these teams with these kind of rules...it would be clean sweep for Bulls or Knicks, then Cavs, Warriors or any of todays teamst would go home to sit in the dark corner of the room, cry and then stop playing in the NBA. Something like that. '90s was something else.
The defensive effort by MJ from 4:40-4:46......nothing but desire and hustle. Miss this era of NBA Ball.

There was way more flopping then. What are you talking about. And it made the game a ton better, not worse. The Knicks & Bulls didn't have floppers on their rosters, but on the Pacers you had Reggie Miller. On the Jazz, the whole freaking team did it. Charles Barkley could flop as well as anybody. How about Vladi Divac? The game was just way more diverse than overall. You had some teams that played really physical like the Knicks, Pistons, Heat; football defense. But you had teams that would pick-&-roll you to death like the Jazz, or teams that would beat you w/ freakish athleticism like the Bulls or Sonics. Some teams would just really space you out like the Suns or Magic, whereas a team like the Suns, Lakers or Nuggets would run-up-the-score w/ their fast-breaking explosions. So you had all sorts of different styles, unlike now where everybody just grabs an inbound pass and dribbles up to fire 3s. Then you had Phil Jackson's triangle that would methodically pick apart your defense, kind of like Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense in football. You had the Pistons, who just kicked your ass. But I disagree w. you of that flopping and hard play have to be mutually exclusive. I don't feel them to necessarily be mutually exclusive at all. There are different ways to play hard, I do wished that they allowed hand-checking back into the game, but in the game's organic state, flopping's just as much a part of basketball as shooting, dribbling, passing, stealing, blocking, running a certain set play, footwork, or anything else. Just like some guys try to shoot good but can't, most guys can't flop successfully either.

This brings back alot of great memories. I'm a die hard bulls fan, but I would say there aren't enough knicks plays, it's mostly bulls. This rivalry was so competitive and close there should be an even amount of plays from both teams. But, still a very good video nonetheless.
For younger fans, this rivalry was about the bulls talent vs the knicks toughness. Fun to watch.

You have to watch this with a "Bitter Sweet" taste in your mouth! This was great aggressive basketball, when men played men and left it all on the floor but how ironic is this that this is the very reason why you don't see this today! Simply because of these games and their physical play the NBA had to alter their rules so that you got more basketball and not enough "Hockey" The contact of play of the 90's was the reason that new rules came about! The intensity of this playoff and others that followed were amazing! Jordan was a beast, he would go inside and will his way to score regardless of the elbows and punches that he knew he would receive, his defense was incredible along with Scottie! New York would have won at least 2 championships 92 and 93 because they were that good! Now let me say a little something about Lebron James. How do you demand top dollar when your team lost, you didn't win, your team was trashed in the finals, the man that you were playing defense against won the finals MVP! You and your team were thoroughly dominated and yet you want top dollar! It's amazing how everyone is kissing Lebron James' butt. Folks he went to Miami and went to the finals four straight times winning two, that's not spectacular, and if the Spurs hadn't choked in the final minute it would have been only one win out of four trips! Lebron James is good, but if you compare him to Jordan in these two videos you see that Jordan has something Lebron doesn't...The Attribute of a Killer! The Bulls, Knicks, Heat of this era would destroy the Heat, and Oklahoma, team of this era! The 92 playoffs were historic!!!

I haven't seen longer plays of jordan for awhile only highlights, it really shows what a complete player he was, overall great player!

This just reaffirms my stance on MJ being the GOAT and B-Ball being way more physical compared to today's game. I was a teenager obsessed with B-Ball when this took place. I watched all these games live. MJ was phenomenal. I get the same feeling of "aww" seeing him at work. Great series here. Ewing, Starks, the X-man... that team was stacked with talent as well.
