    The reason sadness kept touching the core memories is because that's what Riley was feeling and Joy was literally forcing Riley to be happy when she wasn't. Sadness even said she herself didn't know why she was touching them. it's because that's the strongest emotion Riley was feeling but Sadness was masked behind Joy. When I first saw this I really wanted to square up with Joy😭😭😭

    i like how joy is the lead emotion for riley but if you notice her moms lead emotion is sadness and her dads is anger. just shows how everyone can have a certain emotion at the forefront but all the emotions still matter and have to "work together" for a person to be functional.

    • @TheSchaef47
      @TheSchaef47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      And the heightened similarity between the different emotion characters in the mom and dad suggest that the differences between them become less extreme, and the dominance of the one is not quite as significant because they interrelate more strongly.

    • @JorgensZelda
      @JorgensZelda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Someone on another video's comment section theorized that mom's sadness wasn't sadness, but empathy. I can't remember what dad was, but anger wasn't really anger, but determination or assertiveness or something. Like, the main umbrella emotion was sadness/anger, but the real emotional motivation was really one of the more subtle subsets. And that really made sense to me.

      Riley was suppressing her inner Sadness for her family as to not burden them with her emotions.

    I love how Sadness was COMPELLED to touch the memories and this whole thing started because joy tried to get rid of the sad core memory. An embarrassing core memory, but one nonetheless.
    I like how when anger gets angry, he punches fear out of the way. When we're mad we often say things we don't mean because we don't often think of the consequences of it in the moment. In a way fear is knocked out of our minds.

      Also plays into the fact that you can't feel anger and fear at the same time. If you feel afraid and anger takes over at any time it FULLY punches out the fearful response. Flight turns into fight regardless of how scared you were.

  • @dlweiss
    @dlweiss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +603

    I love how this movie seems like just a fun creative romp, and then Bing Bong's story comes in like a DAGGER TO THE HEART.
    Also, I think the "big message" is that sadness is just as important and helpful as every other emotion - and sometimes it's what NEEDS to be felt, even if we don't want to. Sadness kept touching and changing all the memories because Riley *needed* to let herself feel sad and mourn all the things she lost when she moved to a new city. It was the movie's way to showing us that inner battle when someone keeps forcing themselves to act "happy" even when the situation doesn't call for it.
    Plus, it showed at the end the expressing sadness is how we let others know that we're in pain, and allows them to understand us and help us. And sadness is what lets us feel bad for other people in return.

    • @TheSchaef47
      @TheSchaef47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The best part is, if you go digging around the making of stuff, you learn that wasn't going to be the original thrust of the movie, but Pete Docter was not having success putting the film together until he started thinking about the role sadness plays in connecting with people and working through trauma, and when *he* made that discovery, it kind of worked its way into the movie where *Joy* (and later Riley) don't become whole again until they learn how to process sadness and integrate it into their experience.

      @@HunterEQGtribute Depression and sadness aren't the same thing. You've probably watched sad movies or tv shows before and cried, and if you connected to the story you felt better afterwards, or understood. And I'm sure there's plenty of angsty media or songs that you willingly consume because you like them even when they make you feel sad.
      Depression is what makes you not enjoy anything, even when you are sad. It can feel like anger, disgust, fear, etc [like Riley felt when she had to move away] or it can feel empty and hopeless, but the important thing is that it goes away [and comes back as well, if you are clinically depressed]. The important part is to ask for help, and take care of yourself. Therapy and medication are not for everyone, they weren't for me, but it's worth trying to figure it out at least once if you feel the need. What worked for me was a support system, friends and family, and coping mechanisms that included healthy hobbies.
      Taking care of yourself is a difficult journey, it can seem daunting at first, but when it finally starts paying off you'll look back and be so proud of the person you are becoming, and all that it took to get there.

    33:53 it's not that sadness overpowers other emotions generally, but in this specific case where she's trying to come to grips with a big loss, memories that were happy become sad (bittersweet) because now they're associated with that loss.
    What I like in particular about this metaphor is that her formed memories at the end of the movie are colored with different layers of emotions: it can be both happy and sad, or both afraid and disgusted.

    Sadness was supposed to take control. It’s healthy to feel sad about moving away. If she didn’t feel sad and always forced her self to be happy, that becomes toxic positivity. And ultimately that would’ve resulted in her being numb and not being able to decipher her feelings.
    Memories become sad doesn’t mean they’re bad. You look back at them with fondness and maybe a bit of sadness because they’re just memories now
    Her happy memories became nostalgic and bitter sweet because she wouldn’t be able to live through that again. She’s in a new place and scared. And as an 11 year old having her life uprooted, she can’t have everything together.
    Also did you notice how sadness was the head of the console in Mom? It could present either depression or Compassion and loving
    And in Dad’s, it was anger. It could either be anger management issues or discipline.
    I love how this movie deciphers feelings. It’s not just happy, sad, anger or fear. They’re all interlinked and it’s never black and white. Gray areas exist as well. Thank you for reacting to this movie ✨

    • @Lannisen

      I wondered too if sadness for mom and anger for dad were their first emotions as babies?

    • @nehankhan1584
      @nehankhan1584 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Lannisen don’t think that’s how it works? It’s the emotions the people associate with the most. Joy was for Riley for the longest time because she had a very uncomplicated and normal life with a positive attitude. But when trouble came the healthy thing is to feel sad. Sadness probably wouldn’t have gotten to that extent of heading the console for Riley of joy had just let sadness take control from the very start when they were moving.
      So for now Riley doesn’t have a head of the console. She’s just figuring out how emotions work
      As adults though like for the mom and dad, we already have an emotion we think with if that makes sense? If it’s compassion, it’s most likely sadness. If it’s caution, fear. Discipline and strength is anger. And positivity could be joy.
      Just my own personal theory

    I love that the movie doesn't pull punches - the parents literally don't see their daughter is miserable because they refuse to admit their choice might be terrifying for a kid. They keep pushing her to be happy about leaving behind everything she's ever experienced - they're adults, they've moved, they've felt, they've grieved, but they've forgotten how harsh it can be when you haven't done all that. Riley doesn't have the frame of reference to move on - which is portrayed in the Emotions being panicky and confused and messing things up.
    But above all, I think it's good that it shows that no, sometimes people miss that loved ones are hurting because they don't want to see it. It took my parents twenty years to realize my brother suffers chronic depression, which explains all their quarrels and arguments. But in hindsight, all the signs have been there all along.

    The message I got is that being strong for your family doesn't mean putting on a fake smile and crushing what you're really feeling as deep down as possible. That can and does lead to some pretty bad depression. What can start as being repressed sadness can pile up until we no longer know why we're just dead inside... Our consoles are inconsolable and go dark. Riley was very much in danger of this had she not had such loving and caring parents. She had the strength to get off the bus. Riley would have kept going had she not felt the freedom to cry on their shoulders when she got home. Thank you for reacting to this movie. This movie hit me so hard, I was sobbing like a fool during 85% percent of it, but so were my husband and my daughter so it's okay. We moved across the country a while ago, our daughter was 6 at the time but she still had solid friendships that she lost as well as no longer having her grandparents one town over. We are 1000 miles away from everyone we knew. Some memories we don't even bring up all that often because they make us sad. Some old pictures just bring tears. But it's two years later, and we just got home after her school's field day, where she did every event with her two best friends who call her their sister. We live at the end of a dead end street where all the neighborhood kids run around and have Nerf wars and water balloon fights on the regular, whereas our old area was...kinda unsafe. And next week, her grandparents are coming out to visit and to celebrate our younger daughter's first birthday. Lives are always changing and reshaping but we are still us and we always will be.

    You can’t experience true joy without experiencing sadness. Notice how Joy’s hair is blue to represent sadness? They go hand in hand. Riley becoming more emotional mature obviously happens with her growing up, which is how she comes to realizes memories aren’t just one thing/emotion. There’s room for more. It’s the same way her parents and adults emotions are all seated as you pointed out and they’re switchboard is much more expanded. It’s a really cool and subtle way and I think they do it perfectly.

    1- Moving and big life choices can cause memories that used to fill us with joy to feel sad.
    2- emotions intensify as children grown up.

    inside out's emotional scenes are so effective I was sobbing just watching this reaction lmao it's ridiculous how much it gets to me. it's so fun to see how everyone starts the movie by being annoyed at sadness and siding with joy and ends up understanding how important the whole spectrum of emotions is bc it really shows that internalized idea we have that sadness = bad, happiness = good, that leads to toxic positivity. a very necessary movie id say, and it breaks down topics like depression in such easy to comprehend terms that'll surely help young ppl understand their own emotions better.

    Not only does Joy feel sad towards the end of act 2, but she goes through the other three (four if you count her basic emotion, happiness): Anger when she scolds Sadness, though she doesn't glare at her. Fear several times, including when she sees Jangles. And finally, Disgust, when she first sees The Imaginary Boyfriend.

    This movie hit me really hard when I first saw it and to be honest it still does…. Due to abuse I was emotionally stunted and I think this movie does a good job of showing how important it is to let it out sometimes, I can’t tell you how good it felt to cry after years of feeling nothing. I honestly feel like movies like this are extremely important and I applaud Pixar for this masterpiece.

    28:54 I can relate because my parents were in the military. The only time i was upset about moving was when my dad got a job in the US(we were stationed in Germany and I was born there, it’s basically where I spent most of my childhood up until the end of 6th grade) the other times we’ve moved it surprisingly didn’t phase me, even when I had to evacuate a country, I just went with it. My family is moving again bc my parents have better job opportunities. I was kinda sad at first but now I’m excited for it. But my siblings were upset about the move. My siblings are the about the same age I was when I had to move as a kid. I just hope they can adjust and try to make the best of it.

    Love the exploration of emotions and how they are all necessary for mental heath. Every little action the emotions have explains our own actions. anger and fear leading to bad decisions and at 33:07, when aimed at used properly anger is a powerful tool

    33:53 you can’t have one opposite with the other. Riley was going through a big change and being sad and crying helps to get those emotions out. Being happy is important but if you need to cry, just do it and be understanding. It’s not worth it to feel only happy and suppress the other emotions and that’s the moral joy learned

    As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety along with other mental health issues since they were 13 take my word for it if you've never had a moment where you have a mostly shutdown count yourself lucky because those are the moments that is really easy to harm yourself just to try and make that emptiness go away

    Joy and Anger are the only decision makers. The other emotions act more as judges. When Fear, Sadness or Disgust take the elm, it's usually to prevent something rather that doing something. Unless it comes to extremes (e.g. Fight or Flight response, Crying/Depression/Suicide or Vomiting/Frigidity).
    So it makes a lot of sense that Anger is in control when Joy is not around. Only Anger can make things change, for the better or worse.

  • @Jcb2db

    The deeper meaning of sadness and it being overpowering is the fact that it's the most powerful emotion. It's easy to feel joy and fake joy. But it's hard to feel sadness and let yourself feel it. The point of this film is showing Riley was depressed but she was trying to hold herself together. Ie joy being super controlling over what happened in her head. And sadness kept touching things bc Riley NEEDED to let out her feelings but she couldn't bc she was trying to stay happy.

    A lot of people pointed out the parts about sadness and joy. What really stood out for me, especially being a parent of a daughter around this age, is all of the conflicting emotions children have. Not even just conflicting but confusing. They don't know how to handle complex emotional states and this depicts that idea perfectly. Kids really need to feel and express every emotion in order to learn how to grow into themselves. It really is one of the best animated movies ever

    Sadness is touching the memories that should have been hers. The sadness of the moment lead to the joy like with her being sad so her parents and team came to cheer her up. That memory would never happen without her needed her family and friends to help her feel better.

  • @dreamerer09
    @dreamerer09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This movie is brilliant actually, demonstrating emotions and feelings perfectly.
    1. Riley has a really good childhood and almost all her memory has been positive. Everyone seemed to consider sadness as redundant and didnt want her to ever touch the control. Thats probably why she craves to touch it so much.
    2. Sadness made a sad core memory for the first time is crucial because Riley had moved to another state, which means all the good memories were in the past now and you should first feel sad that it may not be there anymore.
    3. The emotion in most charge of the mother's mind is Sadness (sympathy, gentle) and the one in most charge of the father's is Anger (getting angry at the dinner table). That somewhat tells their main characteristics and their behaviors.
    4. Anger is the one came up with the idea returning to Minnesota -> Not all decisions made when you are mad are good ones, because at that time you might not be calm enough to reason.
    5. Riley made that decision out of anger and stole her mom's purse -> anger blocked her train of thoughts and that was why the train trails were broken
    6. Joy was the one who found a way to get out of the dump after she had been crying because in negative situations, positiveness are usually the way out of darkness (of course after letting out all your negative emotions). If you are always burried in sadness about a situation, you cant think of any way to get out of it (like Sadness was just crying when joy fell to the dump)
    7. Sadness are able to transform any memory to sad ones (and maybe no other emotions can) because you literally can feel sadness out of anything and anywhere (but the memory can be reversed so its still fine). Like sometimes even when you watch a fun movies, you may feel sad because you cannot share it with your friends now because you two are apart (just an example)
    8. The mom and dad's emotions are all sittting in chairs because thay are settled, unlike Riley's, which are immature and dont know their places (because Riley still dont khow what to do with her feelings)

    I moved to the US when I was 8yrs old. I didn't know English besides the basic greeting words. I moved to 6 schools in 2yrs. I would cry the 1st day of class and I was so shy!! My first best friend was this black girl who just waved at me across the cafeteria table (I was so scared cuz she was with a group of other girls). I didn't speak English and she would just use her body language to play with me at recess. I wish I remembered her name. I sometimes think of that little girl and wish more kids were like her. She was a key factor in my young life. Without her, I would have sat alone in the cafeteria with no friends. I know this is long sorry.

    One of my core memories is the moment that made me fall in love with anime. Before then I'd only ever seen kids anime like bey blade and pokemon, but one night on tv I saw a show called "sword art online" thought it was a funny sounding name, and watched the end of episode 23 where they're trying to clear the alfheim main quest and reach the door on the ceiling. That moment changed my life. I learned there was anime out there that had everything I want.
    Then I spent a while watching random anime and figuring out my genres. It's mostly fantasy/Isekai and romance/shoujo genres.

    just wanted to answer your question why would anyone want to change the color of the memory. i think that sadness doesn’t really want to change the memory, but she’s almost compelled to. these former happy memories aren’t happy anymore, because they were made in a place and with people and in situations that she won’t ever experience the same way again. before she moved, looking back on those memories would have made her feel happy, but now it makes her feel sad, or at best maybe bittersweet. and because she is so young and all of her life was centered around the same people, locations, and events, the sudden shock of her life being uprooted sent her into a depression. this is just what i took from it. thanks for the reaction, i loved it!

    Riley is still only 11. Puberty happens a little closer to the teen years for most girls. But mine started when I was ten, so she could be a normal girl, or even a late bloomer. Mine happened super-early, but a lot of factors are taken into account for that's part of life. Even something as simple as being overweight early on can jumpstart it. (For the record, I have been heavy practically my whole life.)
