    THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE REACTION | 4:11 - 39:04
    THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE REVIEW | 39:05 - 41:36
    The Hunger Games Movie Description:
In what was once North America, the Capitol of Panem maintains its hold on its 12 districts by forcing them each to select a boy and a girl, called Tributes, to compete in a nationally televised event called the Hunger Games. Every citizen must watch as the youths fight to the death until only one remains. District 12 Tribute Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has little to rely on, other than her hunting skills and sharp instincts, in an arena where she must weigh survival against love.
The Hunger Games is a 2012 American dystopian action film directed by Gary Ross and based on Suzanne Collins's 2008 novel of the same name. It is the first installment in The Hunger Games film series and was produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik, with a screenplay by Ross, Collins, and Billy Ray. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland. The film is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where a boy and a girl from each of the nation's 12 Districts are chosen annually as "tributes" and forced to compete in The Hunger Games, an elaborate televised fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place when her sister was initially selected as tribute. With her district's male tribute, Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson), Katniss travels to the Capitol to train and compete in the hunger games.

You're right about Haymitch. He won the 50th Hunger Games at age 16 and spent the next 24 years having kids sent to him for advice and counsel, only to watch them get butchered. There are other factors, as well, but that's for the sequel. But you're spot on on why he's a burnt-out drunk.

Like any film series made from novels, they have to cut or simplify a lot of stuff.
In the second novel, Katniss and Peeta watch footage of the older "seasons" of Hunger Games on DVD, including seeing how Haymitch won the 50th Games. He used a forcefield at the end. This isn't a Spoiler note, because that's not in the film version. The Capitol considered that tactic to be "cheating," so he was honored as a Victor but they executed his whole family. That's another reason why he drinks. That's not in the film version, either.
There's a Fan Film on YT showing how Haymitch won, titled The Second Quarter Quell by MainstayPro.

First off, DEFINITELY watch the next one. It's the best one by far. Second, Peeta really did care about her and always had a crush on her, but the bread scene doesn't make her mad. He saved her family from starving and took quite a beating for "accidentally" burning that bread so he could give it to her. She knows that, and never understood why he did it. District 12 is the poorest district because their last winner was like 25 years ago (Haymitch who mentors them). It's like a vicious cycle for them because you get riches if your district wins, so naturally districts 1 and 2 invest in training kids that volunteer themselves and secure most of the wealth. Also, in the beginning, they talk about how many times their names are in, and that's because you get one entry each year, but you are allowed to take rations if you submit your name more times, so Gale has done that many times making his odds that much higher to be picked. Over time it becomes almost impossible for a district like 12 to generate a kid well-fed enough or trained enough to win.

    • @karlsmith2570
      @karlsmith2570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

The reason Peeta didn't get parachutes was that sponsors and gifts were hard to come by, and Haymitch had to decide who had the better chances of winning the games with the few items he got. To make this decision every year was certainly some of the reason he drank, apart from doing this futile mentoring job every year at all, not to speak of his own PTSD after the games HE was in.

Katniss was singing the same song because in the book she said Rue reminded her of Prim. This in fact caused a bit of blowup when they cast Amandla as Rue because quite a few people (*cough cough*) interpreted this to mean Rue RESEMBLED Prim, therefore Rue was a non-melinated person. Nevermind that a person's mannerisms can also remind one person of another.
Wow, when I made this comment a few days ago, who knew that someome would go out of their way to attempt to prove me wrong about this. People were coming sideways at A CHILD (at the time) because she didn't look the way they THOUGHT she should. I merely pointed this fact out in addition to the reason Kat was likely moved to treat Rue so gently. Geez.

We have no control over how others choose to perceive information even if it's staring them straight in the face. Back when the movie was cast, there WAS a lot of commentary in general from folks who get up in arms about that sort of thing. I read quite a few posts even recently that were just slamfests against the casting that made me sick to my stomach to continue. I generally don't care how movies are cast. The movie was toned down from the books to get a lower rating as well. Also, Peeta always had a crush on Katniss he didn't just make it up for the games but it certainly came in handy at the beginning. No Peeta has had crush on Katniss since childhood which he deliberately revealed to try to help them both get sponsors. He sadly is being real with Katniss and only was pretending to help the Careers to protect Katniss. He genuinely doesn't want to win if it means losing Katniss so he is prepared to sacrifice himself for her. He is really mostly focusing on helping Katniss win. Katniss doesn't know he is actually being truthful about his feelings for her until the cave. Katniss feels so bad about leading him on but knows that she HAS to continue the star crossed lovers storyline to hopefully save their lives. It's only at the end once they have won and going home that Peeta learns the truth that Katniss was only pretending to save their lives and is naturally very hurt. Gale is only a friend to Katniss and they have bonded to help each other hunt. Both Peeta and Gale have feelings for Katniss but she is so in survival mode she doesn't know how she actually feels for either of them.

As many said they have each tributes eyes but they also had sizes relative to the living tributes. Their fur was the same color and texture as their human counterparts and they all wore collars with the tributes district number. So, all that in mind, imagine how much it fucked with Katniss when she saw the smallest mutt, with black curly hair and the number 11 on her collar looking at her with intense hatred out of Rue's eyes. It's so sick and twisted in the books the ways the Capitol comes up with to punish the districts. Poor Katniss.

Catching Fire is probably my favorite in the franchise. You should definitely continue the other 3 movies and consider reading the books. I didn't know anything about this franchise until long after the first movie came out on DVD. It wasn't until I watch the first movie that I became curious about the books. Pretty sure if I had never watched this first movie I probably would have never been curious about the books. Harry Potter was kind of the same for me. Even though the first three books were written when I was still in high school it took my grandma's suggestion to watch the movie to get me into the franchise. Before that, I had never even heard of Harry Potter. Also as someone who read the Divergent series, I don't know if you've read or seen the movies, so I won't say a whole lot but compared to the book series it was kind of a disappointment. If you wanna watch them anyways is completely up to you. Oh and that jump scare seriously had me rolling. It's all good. I can relate. In the Book, the dogs are “mutts”. They took the dead tributes and transformed them into each of those animals. Each one wears a collar with their District number on it. The coloring and features remain with the mutts. So, if they were blonde in life, they were blonde as a mutt. Red head in life, red as a mutt, etc. so before Katness shoots one, it tears her heart and mind that she knows each one and what the game makers did.

"Now You Just Let The Other Kids Know Her Location"
That was the idea, they'd wanted them to know where Katniss was in the hopes that they could kill her

In the books the mercy kill was a necessity, they were sitting there listening to the dogs slowly kill him for hours before they just couldn't take listening to his suffering anymore

I love that you read Haymitch in just one scene.
Some people don't figure him out even in 4 movies!
Edit after the appearance of the beasts. I LOVE HOW WELL YOU READ THIS FILM!! A lot of the stuff you said was spelled out in the books. Like, yes. They did introduce the dogs because there weren't many of them left and they were too spread out. They needed a grand finale.

Oh good I was wondering when you'd get to these. Also, the Divergent books were worse than the movies, if such a thing is actually possible. I didn't know it was until I read them, and my hand still twitches towards that toothbrush to jam it in my ear and scrub the memories out of my brain but that doesn't really work.....anyway. My favorite one is Mockingjay part one, it's got two really powerful moments in it that get me.....be interesting to see your reaction to those.

In the books, the first two districts have 'career candidates' that have resources and trainers for the games because of their close relationship with the capitol, generally a winner comes from those two districts

Also in the books, the monsters at the end had the faces of the kids who had died as a kind of psychological warfare. They kind of really removed the teeth of what was in the books so that it would be more PG-13, and took away a lot of the points the books were making, like a lot of the emphasis that had been placed on things like the people in the capital city eating these feasts while the children starved in their home district. Tho, you really do get to see the PTSD as they go on, which is kind of the main point of these books. A lot of therapists for a while were actually suggesting that their patients read these books if they were family members of soldiers who were coming back from Iraq / Afghanistan, because it would help them to understand what the soldiers were going through try to re-enter society and reassimilate after all the stuff they've been through and everything they had seen. It was it's basically about PTSD and televised wars being treated as sitcoms or reality TV, which is very apropos when you think about it because that's what our soldiers actually do go through these days. So to have books that address that in a sort of fantasy / sci-fi setting allowed young people like the children of the veterans understand what their parents were going through & that kind of thing.
