Love the Christmas sweater. I would make the Monday sweater and use the red yarn to embroider bows on (after Christmas you can remove the bows and have your everyday sweater back!)
Loved this episode. The Christmas sweater is very cute! It’s not too late to add short rows between the end of the color work and the splitting for sleeves. Look at Mostly Knitting’s tutorial on “adding short rows to a pattern that doesn’t have them”
I think you could easily just leave as is, but I had one thought for the back of the December bows- cut out a little felt circle, just big enough to cover the ends of the leather and the glue, and then hot glue that circle down on top, sandwiching the leather ends inside. Will just neaten up the back for gift giving without needed to purchase an awl (and sewing the leather strap down sounds very un-fun anyway).
When I need a provisional cast on, I use Judy's magic cast on and hold half the stitches on a spare cord. I would not normally offer this suggestion, but I think you two have the knitting MOJO that will allow you to figure it out. It makes a completely invisible "join."
I was just going to suggest this! I’ve only tried a provisional cast on two or three times, but did not have good success with the crochet cast on method. Just this week I learned about casting on to barber cord and watched a few tutorials on it. Brilliant! I plan to try this on my next knit that involves a provisional cast on!
I’m just finishing the sleeves on my Paul Cardigan. It is an amazing pattern. The finishing touches are so good and it has a real store-bought look about it. I found a good video tutorial where they picked up the provisional cast on from the wrong side. It worked great. You can’t tell where I transitioned from the saddle shoulder into the sleeve. I really hope you give this one a go. I think you’ll love it.
Jessica, you could have made a hole in the leather strap for your bow with a nail or an awl. Your holiday sweater reminds me of gingerbread houses. You could always use up the contrast colors by including some colorwork on the sleeves. Rachel, once you finish the cuff of a colorwork sock, flip it inside out to do the colorwork so that your floats are spread out. You still knit the right side of the colorwork, but it's sitting on the inside.
Some of my first knitting projects were felted mittens and they were so amazing at blocking the wind. If you have access to an older top load washing machine with an agitator, that will get the job done quick! Hot water and I like to throw in a towel too. Check it often so you don't shrink it too much. Good luck, can't wait to see!
Great episode. Beautiful knits all round. The holiday sweater is gorgeous. I wonder if the different terminology of knits could relate to where we all live. I live in England and call my knits Jumpers or cardigans and if I was thinking jacket, I would think of an outdoor item or something formal for the office etc 😀. I do find myself saying sweater quite a bit now too as I watch so many knitting videos and see so many lovely sweater patterns 😃. I think the leather strap on the bow looks fine glued but if you did want to cover it up, I wonder if a small felt disc glued over the top would do the trick? Look forward to seeing you next time. 😊
Sarah from two "purls in a pod" has a video for the sandness garn slippers made from Fritids Garn and she shows her felting process in that. Beautiful projects as always 🥰
Jessica, if you want a high V neck sweater check out Sunday Brunch Sweater by Hiromi Nagasawa. Another great episode girls, now I’m wondering why I’m not knitting a Holiday Sweater!
Love the buttons and cables of Rachel's Jacket No. 2. The color match is perfect! Love the color of Jessica's Stockholm Sweater. I knit on my Age of Brass and Steam Shawl while watching. 🧶
As a former ESL kid I still don’t know the difference between a sweater vs pullover vs jumper. I think the jacket vs cardi confusion might be due to the same issue with non-native speakers using jacket for a cardi because in their language all open sweaters are jackets and there’s no separate word for a cardi.
Sweater and pullover are interchangeable - the main difference is sweater is used primarily by American English and pullover is used by British/European English, different words for the same thing. As for cardigan vs jacket, I believe jacket is intended for an outerwear garment whereas cardigan is something usually lighter that can be layered under a jacket. But again, it could also be the same case with Americans using one term and British/Europeans using another to describe the same thing. Hope this helps!
I also think that the words mean the same thing, but are selected depending on the natuonality of the speaker. In New Zealand, we say jersey In Australia, they say jumper. In America and Canada, they say sweater. Perhaps they say pullover in the UK. I would also call the knitted items discussed a 'cardigan', not a jacket. I tend to think of a jacket as being formed from a woven material, and it is often (but not always) an outer layer. It can be cropped, but does not extend past hip length.
You might try pinning in a plastic layer in your Christmas socks before using whatever felting method you use. This prevents the layers of wool from felting together. Learned this from felting oven mitts where the thumb can do that. Just pin inside and secure in several places. Also depending on the yarn it might take several washes or dryer cycles to felt it to the degree you want.
I love your Augustins sweater! Reminds me of gingerbread. Perfectly Christmasy! FYI, the Que Sera Sera colorway is pronounced Kay suh-RAH suh-RAH. It means "Whatever will be will be." And Quintanilla is pronounced KIN-ta-KNEE-yah.
Side note about felting in the washing machine, you’ll want hot H2O with a lot of agitation-also putting it into a zippered pillowcase will help to keep the fibers contained. The first time I felted and didn’t do this omg I regretted having to pull out all of the loose fibers from the washing machine! 🩵
I recently made The Throwover by Andrea Mowry and she put in short rows on the back after doing the color work yoke and before joining under the arm. It worked. Just a thought.
Hey, if you make one of the bows as gifts, you could also try using a nail and a hammer to make wholes into the leather straps. That’s basically the easiest way to punch wholes into leather if you don’t have one of these tools for belts. But hot glue obviously does the job as well. 😅❤
I made 4 of those stockings last year in that yarn. I felted them (one by one) in the washing machine on a «normal cycle». 40°C, 1 hour. Turned out perfect. A colleague felted 3 in the machine at the same time, and they felted too much. Could be a coincidence but better safe than sorry.
So many fun things…. For felting .. be sure to add towels or jeans in the wash to help the felting… maybe check out Sarah from two purls in a pods video on felting slippers ❤
For just two holes, you can use a hammer with a very skinny nail, the thin steel kind for hanging a picture on a wall works great. Yes, an awl or a leather hole punch also works and is made for this, but most people own a hammer and a nail.
Such beautiful knits as always! I’ve been gift knitting as well and I love the felted stocking. I did some felting years ago and loved the results. I was always told you needed a washing machine top loading with an agitator which are fairly old fashioned. At the time I had one and hot water on the shortest cycle worked great! When I purchased a new washer it was front loading so I having felted since.
I made that sock two years ago. I felt in my washing machine and keep checking it. I used unplied yarn and it worked perfect. Hot water is the trick to felting and keep checking.
Thanks, Rachel. I've purchased the pattern for Jacket No. 2, found the perfect yarn in stash, and cast on my swatch. Once completed, I will name her after you!
I hope you enjoy it!! I liked that the cables always kept me interested because I was always trying to get to the next cable row so I feel like it knit up fast! ☺️💛
another wonderful podcast, thank you for taking your time to show us your beautiful knitting. I find lots of inspiration from the patterns who show which leads me to designers I may not know of. Knitting has so many avenues in which we can go down and find a world of beautiful and interesting items to make. Thank You. I hope you and your families have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.
I have felted slippers and clogs. I put one pair in with a towel and washed on hottest setting with regular agitation for short cycle about 30 minutes. The other pair I did the same way but with blue jeans. Both turned out great.
The northern augustine sweater is soo gorgeous ! And the fibers you chose make it look so cozy 😍 I am working on my Christmas gifts as I watch your podcast and I love it so much ❤️
Awesome podcast. You both have beautiful finished objects and I love your Christmas sweater wip. I think multiple Christmas sweaters is fine. You can wear them the whole month of December so all would be fine.
Thank you for sharing your knits with us. I'm currently knitting Barbie doll clothes for my granddaughter. They are very small so should go fairly quickly. Have a great few weeks, and happy knitting. Diane
The Christmas sweater is really pretty and I absolutely love the base colour - it reminds me of gingerbread or a German Christmas bake called "Honigkuchen". The bows are also super cute - I might make myself some for decoration or maybe to wear as a hair accessory.
I would cut out a felt heart and super glue that to the leather strap on the back of the bows. That way it covers the super glue and looks like a cute and intentional detail
I always thought of a jacket as a light coat, so something more dense and thicker. Edit to add: you could make a little rectangle of knit fabric with the same yarn that you sew down over the area that was glued and I think that would make it look super clean! One more edit: oh my goodness your Christmas sweater looks like a gingerbread cookie and I love it. 🥹 Last edit: the hibernation pullover by Aimee Sher Makes would be a great V neck DK sweater for your alpaca in button. It’s a raglan and I’m knitting one now in button, parrot wax cap and the light blue mush colorway that I can’t remember the name of. Mines in natural extrafine with KFO mohair.
I've felt many projects, in washing machine, hot water, detergent, in a mesh bag, quick normal cycle, and then into dryer on med warm. Knit with #10 or 11 needles and make item 1 1/2 to 2x larger than final product. I use mostly Brown Sheep lambs pride wool.
Felting is somewhat unpredictable. Knit at a loose gauge. Make a large swatch and measure. Then run thru wash with hot water and soap. Maybe with towels…. Then re-shape and measure to see how much it shrunk. It’s super fun to see the change in fabric. I have felted a few bags. Good luck
Hello! OMG you're in for a treat with felting the Fritisgarn, it's kinda fun and addictive. Have done a few slippers now so happy to help if you get stuck or have any questions 😁💚❤
Felting tips, the looser the twist, the quicker the yarn felts. Fritisgarn is a really great felting yarn. Loose twist and slightly fuzzy, it’s my fave for felting, along with White Buffalo brand roving yarns. Jacket, versus Cardigan, I believe you hit it when you mentioned ease. Especially the sleeves. It’s a jacket if you can wear it outdoors like a light coat or jacket. Cardigans are usually meant for indoor wear and fit closer. The confusion started when folks began knitting worsted weight “cardigans” when typically a cardigan was 4 ply (sport) or fingering, and a heavy cardigan, usually for men was dk. This is old school, way back, gleaned from saving my Mother’s and Grandmother’s knitting patterns in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. But 8n the end it just might be a designers choice of words! 😄 Enjoyed the projects you have finished and are planning. I’m finally starting the sleeves on my Framed pullover. It’s been a fun knit. Also made some fun kitty ornaments from fuzzy yarns. The “Knit Cats Christmas Ornament Pattern Set”.
Love watching your podcasts and am always excited to grab a drink and sit down with my knitting for a bit. All your FO's and WIPs always give me a lot of inspiration, especially when autumn and the holidays come around ❤ On a side note : I noticed an increase in advertisement during videos recently (not just on this channel), and it really takes away from of the viewing experience, especially for these podcasts where we're invested in the WIPS 😅 For example, I got 10 ads while watching this video, and it made me curious to know if content creators have control over the amount of ads allowed during their videos? Either way, this won't stop me from watching your content 🧶
Love your Christmas sweater. I like the low contrast. It makes your sweater a work of art instead of an ugly Christmas sweater. You could add short row shaping right now before you go on. I have seen some sweaters that do the shaping when the colourwork yolk is done.
Thanks for another lovely episode! I’ve felted fritidsgarn in normal 40•celsius cycle with normal washing liquid, just added a towel in there as well. And another tip is to attach some plastic (e.g. a small plastic bag) inside the foot with a cotton thread so that the toe part or the heel doesn’t felt together - not sure if that’s necessary but I’ve done it just in case :)
I might have a trick for putting holes in the leather strap. I used a screwdriver with a small drill (like a 2mm wood drill) to put in some extra holes in a belt. This might work for you as well :) also there is an extra tool to put in holes in leather which might be worth it, if you have this problem frequently. I think it is called leather punch or something like that (Lochzange in German)
My tipp for colorwork socks: don‘t catch the floats as you go. I actually knitted the exact same swan socks and had the same problem at first. Then I saw another podcast with stone knits where she explained that you should not catch floats for the stretchiness (even when you knit 12stitches in the same color!)
Your projects are beautiful, as usual! I’m working now on my second Billie- my husband wanted one and I love mine so much. Can’t wait to see yours done. I’m hoping to finish this year! Take care, Happy Thanksgiving!
Was so excited to see that I could watch this while I worked on my totally rad ribbed socks during nap time this afternoon! Currently trying to find the motivation to start on my Christmas sweater for this year…
Beautiful! I love the Christmas sweater! The Olympia sweater is so similar to the Guld sweater I’ve had my eye on, I’ll have to compare to see which design I prefer.
This was a fun episode. Everything you make looks wonderful, as usual. Jessica, for felting, the key is hot water, soap, and agitation, whether you do it by hand or in the washing machine. When I do it, I sometimes even use a new kitchen scrubber and do it in the sink, then put it in the dryer. Also, for your v-neck sweater that you want to make with a different shoulder, maybe check out the Sunday Brunch Sweater by Hiromi Nagasawa or the All Season Vest by Norio Ichikawa. They both have a higher v-neck like you showed. Have a good week. Thanks again.
Always so inspiring. Last year I knitted the Arne and Carlos mystery stocking which is released one little strip a day. So if you want a stocking that is manageable, that is an option. x
I love the Christmas sweater and the Swan Lake socks! 😍Now I am really tempted to knit a Christmas sweater myself. We'll see if I find the time to do it with all the gift knitting/making I have planned, though...
By the way, I am currently working on Lene Holme Samsoe's new sweater knitting pattern, the Porcelain Damask sweater. I am using Knitting for Olive Merino in the colorway Nordic Beach which was completely inspired by both of you! I especially loved the way how Rachel's Colette pullover turned out so I decided to use it as well. I also talked about it in my most recent podcast episode, in case you are interested.
Hello! For your Stockho;m sweater....how about grafting? you could cut just above the bottom rib section and then pick up the stitches from either end sections, knit the body section to your desired length and then graft the ribs section back to the body.
Jessica I love your Christmas sweater!!! When I saw you hold it up I knew immediately Rachel was going to want to make it the way she was looking at at 😍 Rachel your very good with those cables!!! That cardigan/jacket is so classy!!
As far as the short rows, I've seen several colorwork yoke sweaters that have short rows under the colorwork, which is something you may be able to do on your Christmas sweater. I think matching sweaters would be fun, but I would save your yarn for the other Christmas sweater for next year. Your patchwork yarns are beautiful! ❤🧶
Currently knitting up my holiday sweater, the Bethlehem jumper by the petite knitter in classic DK yarn from Coast to Coast new collection. Using the color Que Será Será, as the main color for the body and Button for the color work yoke. This is my first color work sweater, but I have my christmas tree lit, fireplace going, and a hot cup of tea, so what can go wrong?
I have felted in the past, & it is always an experiment! Christmas stockings are an excellent choice to try it, as they don't have to fit anyone. Even mittens can be trial/error. When I was taught felting, I learned that hot/cold water changes can help, but temperature isn't as important as SOAP + AGITATION + FIBER CONTENT!. Only animal fibers untreated. Fibers that felt: 100 non Superwash wool, alpaca, llama (maybe yak, haven't tried it.) Another variation is dyes in the wool. I have found that natural colors felt more consistently than some wools with dyes in them. You can felt in a sink, but it takes longer, but you have more control over seeing what is happening in front of you. I also second what someone said, that top loading machines are more convenient, because you can lift the lid & check the item. Unfortunately , most machines are front loaders now, so you can't do that. Also, knitting at a looser gauge is actually preferred, as it gives the yarn space to contract without the fabric becoming overly stiff & brick-like. My most recent felted item was last Christmas. I made the Norwegian Nr. 3 Doble Tofler by Liv Stangeland in Rauma Rams (Aran weight). I fitted them to my brother after each wash cycle to get a good fit. (You can check my notes on Ravelry under the name knitvsread).
I LOVE printmaking too! I took it in college as well and I took all the classes I could of it! I also got the alpaca dk from the collection and be mindful when caking it up because it kept flying off of my ball winder (I'm pretty sure mines the plastic one from Knitpicks) I got the mountain sampler to make a Sari Nordlund beanie, the Vivienne beanie!
I’ve used Fritidsgarn and the very similar Vams for felted christmas stockings! My tip: I think the easiest is to felt in the dryer instead of the washing machine. I first rinse the item in my sink. The. I put the item in the dryer together with a wet towel on a short program (the towel is for added friction). Doing it like this I can check quite often and I feel like I have more control over how much the item felts 🥰
I’m so tempted to make the December Bow…eeek it’s so pretty! I’m going to start making the Arne&Carlos Julefugler Christmas Stocking soon. Excited to cast on. I’m from the UK and I put my Christmas stockings at the end of the bed or under the Christmas tree through December xx
A great v-neck is the Harlow by Caidree. I just finished it and love it so much. The construction sounds similar but uses an I cord and not a provisional cast on 😊
Beautiful Christmas sweater, Jessica. Wow. I don't blame you Rachel for wanting to make one too. You didn't mention which Christmas sweater you plan to make, but I'm sure that'll be coming up soon. Rachel's cabled sweater is also just gorgeous.
It's always such a treat to sit down and watch your podcast ❤️ Jessica, your Stockholm Sweater is beautiful 😍 love the color! Rachel, I am in love with your Chantal Sweater, it looks great on you. Gives me early 2000 vibes, and I love it! I definitely have the itch to cast on a Christmas sweater this year...I'm between the Northern Augustine no 6 or the Holly Sweater 😍 both are so good!
Thanks for sharing!! Right now I’m working on the Top Sol by Mochi Knits as a gift for a friend. When I’m finally done with that, I’m back to my Mosaic Sweater by Knitting for Olive. See you in the next video! ❤
I'm a recent subscriber, and I am enjoying your content. I have been catching up on your older episodes. I am currently knitting the half + half triangles shawl.
Lots of comments already so hopefully no one has mentioned this tip yet but I have had really good results with felting when I put the cycle on high agitation (heavy duty cycle) and put the water level to low. I don't know where I read that but it has worked for me. I also add towels, jeans, and even the occasional tennis ball. I have a standard older style machine (top loader with central agitator). Also, on the Paul sweater, I think String Things by Mel (on TH-cam) made one if not two Paul sweaters. If you guys aren't watching her, she's really great and she has similar taste in patterns to both of you.
Your Christmas sweater totally reminds me of gingerbread. Wouldn't think to do a holiday sweater in that color but it is perfect!
The Christmas sweater is the colour of gingerbread, very festive indeed.
Love the Christmas sweater. I would make the Monday sweater and use the red yarn to embroider bows on (after Christmas you can remove the bows and have your everyday sweater back!)
Listen, if Jessica can’t tell you used different yarn for your MFTK jacket, no one will be able to😂
😂😂😂
Loved this episode. The Christmas sweater is very cute! It’s not too late to add short rows between the end of the color work and the splitting for sleeves. Look at Mostly Knitting’s tutorial on “adding short rows to a pattern that doesn’t have them”
It’s always really cozy watching your episodes! I’m knitting on a lulu slipover for my toddler 😊
That is such a cute pattern! 💛
Just attach a little piece of round red felt over the strap then you wont see the hot glue 🌸
I think you could easily just leave as is, but I had one thought for the back of the December bows- cut out a little felt circle, just big enough to cover the ends of the leather and the glue, and then hot glue that circle down on top, sandwiching the leather ends inside. That green Aloft color is STUNNING on you Jessica. Tempted to buy a sweater’s quantity myself
I got it when it was on sale, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do another discount at the end of the month if you do decide to grab it!
I've made felted slippers using cascade ecological wool! And quick wash cycle using warm water works worked well for me!

The brown in your Christmas sweater reminds me of gingerbread. I think it's beautiful!

Use an awl or leather hole punch to make the holes in the leather.
I was so surprised to hear my name lol!! would absolute love to see your version of the Paul sweater :) love your guys’ videos!
We love your videos! I may have to go back and rewatch where you discuss that sweater and hype myself up before casting it on! 😅 ~Jess
Enjoyed the projects you have finished and are planning. I’m finally starting the sleeves on my Framed pullover. It’s been a fun knit. Also made some fun kitty ornaments from fuzzy yarns. The “Knit Cats Christmas Ornament Pattern Set”.
I forgot that was the yarn you used for your slippers! They turned out so good, so that gives me a little more confidence!! 😁
Love watching your podcasts and am always excited to grab a drink and sit down with my knitting for a bit. All your FO's and WIPs always give me a lot of inspiration, especially when autumn and the holidays come around ❤
On a side note : I noticed an increase in advertisement during videos recently (not just on this channel), and it really takes away from of the viewing experience, especially for these podcasts where we're invested in the WIPS 😅 For example, I got 10 ads while watching this video, and it made me curious to know if content creators have control over the amount of ads allowed during their videos?
Either way, this won't stop me from watching your content 🧶
Love your Christmas sweater. I like the low contrast. It makes your sweater a work of art instead of an ugly Christmas sweater. You could add short row shaping right now before you go on. I have seen some sweaters that do the shaping when the colourwork yolk is done.
Amazing episode. Love all your knitting projects. Both of you are really talented knitters ❤🎀🍒🎄
I love your podcast so much❤️ I have binged every single episode
girls I watched this episode 3 times already i think, good job you make wonderful things🥺🥺❤❤❤
I adore your Christmas sweater! So beautiful!
Was so excited to see that I could watch this while I worked on my totally rad ribbed socks during nap time this afternoon! Currently trying to find the motivation to start on my Christmas sweater for this year…
The Christmas Sweater is so beautiful ❤
Knitting the Seasalt socks in Cascade Heritage Limestone color, nice stretchy socks,
Currently knitting up my holiday sweater, the Bethlehem jumper by the petite knitter in classic DK yarn from Coast to Coast new collection.
Your Christmas sweater is gorgeous! As is everything you two make…
It's always such a treat to sit down and watch your podcast ❤️
Jessica, your Stockholm Sweater is beautiful 😍 love the color!
I use a drill to put holes in leather. Use a small drill but.
Sarah from Two Purls in a Pod did a whole episode on felted slippers made out of Fritidsgarn. Maybe that would be helpful for your stockings?
Ohh we love their podcast! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Yeah she has 2 different episodes where she talks about this!
@@thosetwinswhoknitI love those gals too! Soooo entertaining and funny. Yours and theirs are my favourite podcasts.
Fritid Garn is pronounced “free-teed”. And I believe it is used often for felted items.
Beautiful sweaters and podcast! 41:46
I LOVE eveyrthing and that cat stockings~ How cute! We have two ragdolls named Chloe and Brownie. - All the best, Kimberly
I think a wide silver satin bow would be gorgeous for the grey sweater. It is beautiful!
Ohh I hadn’t considered silver! That would also be beautiful!! 😊
Thanks for sharing!! Right now I’m working on the Top Sol by Mochi Knits as a gift for a friend. When I’m finally done with that, I’m back to my Mosaic Sweater by Knitting for Olive. See you in the next video! ❤
Beautiful projects as usually 🤍
I'm a recent subscriber, and I am enjoying your content. I have been catching up on your older episodes. I am currently knitting the half + half triangles shawl.
I just made Aftens Christmas Stocking, knit with Fritidsgarn and then felted. It turns out so fluffy and soft, it's amazing
I think it has to with density of the fabric and the sturdiness of the suggested yarn. That's what makes it more of an outerwear item.
Yeah I think when designers refer to a cardigan as a jacket it may mean the wind doesn’t get through it as easily, but I also don’t know
Always fun to watch. As for provisional cast ones look at Laura Nelkin’s video using barber cord. I have had really good luck with this method.
On your Christmas sweater: can you add some short rows after you split for sleeves?
Lots of comments already so hopefully no one has mentioned this tip yet but I have had really good results with felting when I put the cycle on high agitation (heavy duty cycle) and put the water level to low. I don't know where I read that but it has worked for me. I also add towels, jeans, and even the occasional tennis ball. I have a standard older style machine (top loader with central agitator). Also, on the Paul sweater, I think String Things by Mel (on TH-cam) made one if not two Paul sweaters. If you guys aren't watching her, she's really great and she has similar taste in patterns to both of you.
Try using a drill with a small drill bit to make holes in your leather piece. Your bows are both super cute!
