  • Hello everyone! As usual, I would love to know your opinions on this in the comments! Il Makiage foundation is a good product but their advertising and their foundation match test has me second guessing the brand.

Do you know what I wish? You did individual beauty consultations. It would literally take you millions of days, but I always return to your channel for what I believe to be reliable information, but I’m always still left with questions about my own beauty questions. Would you accept a spare kidney as opposed to money? 🤣

I've done a diploma in animation and game design, and there's actually a lot of time dedicated to special effects in live action and photo editing. The best advice I can give is to look at the lights and shadows. Mascara packaging is an easy one, because they usually give you a superzoom of the eye. Look where the highlights are, look where the shadows are, have the shadows cast by the eyelashes changed, is she looking much further up in the second picture. I'm so often seeing 3 pictures of lips given a recolour to show 18 shades of lipstick these days because they don't bother swatching.
For foundation, here's my advice - look at the hairline, look around the corners of eyes and lips, look at the wing of the nose. Are the edges of a shadow cast by the nose blurry, indistinct, or lighter than the midpoint of the shadow? These companies are not paying enough to their editors or giving them enough time to get a perfect fake. Watch for these areas of high contrast and high texture.

I usually look into the eyes for light reflections and the eyelash placement. Nobody’s eyelashes look the same twice, and lights and individual hair strands are never in the same place twice. It’s really obvious when you start looking for it.

Years ago, maybe 25 or so, Il Makiage had a gorgeous, high-end store in Manhattan not far from Central Park. They sold a full range of cosmetics and the store was frequented by the women who lived in the area which is the most expensive, exclusive area of Manhattan. Yeah, I agree. Melora Hardin's video was the first one of these I saw, so (since I'm in the States and familiar with the actress), I always saw them as ads and filtered by the company. Robert's right, though. Show us how her skin really looks before and after she applies the foundation. That will sell more product than these overly filtered (or poor quality) videos that obviously blur out her (already lovely) skin. She is my age (mid-50s) and she looks dang good, and I bet the makeup does make her skin look better.

THANK YOU! SOMEONE finally said it! On the left, you can see the label, on the right? all blurry. Now from a marketing and psychological aspect. Studies have shown, that the more you involve yourself in the purchase, the more you think you are PERSONALIZING that purchase... the more you are apt to buy. The more things that they make you do, that are easy, (Making someone jump through hoops does not work for this) Then when it is all said and done buyers are more apt to think that if they DON'T buy they wasted not just THEIR time but the time of the business. Look at the different aspects of each ad. You will only be pretty if you get this foundation (Ego and desperation), You get to PERSONALIZE your foundation (Ego again), If it was not as GOOD as it is, you could buy it at Wally World (Scarcity). I promise that MOST people did not even NOTICE that the image was blurred.

Robert, in the U.S., Il Makiage sells two foundations: "Woke Up Like This" (the one featured in the clips in your video), and "After Party" which they describe as 'next gen full coverage'. For concealers, they also have two options: "F*ck I'm Flawless," which is the standard liquid concealer; the second is "Mystique Concealer Palette" which is a compact with six shades of color correcting cream concealer. They also have some limited skincare options (a redness "defense" product, a wrinkle "filler"/blur product, and a "power pumping" primer, which comes in a little pot -- it's not their regular primer. I think that *could* be why the color match quiz has so many questions. They're likely collecting all our data now, so as they expand their offerings, they know which products to target to whom.

I want to believe that the part of the questionnaire that asks about skin type/concerns is for the purposes of data collecting, like a survey. It's possible that they're using it for advertising or to scope out the market for product development. If it's for product development, they should ask the color matching questions first and then a prompt should ask if they wish to fill out a survey. That way the quiz doesn't give the false impression of getting an ultra custom formula. If it's not for anything like that, what's the point lol?

My mom and I took the test and then realized you have to pay for the full bottle and then if you don’t like it you can send it back. We were super disappointed
Edit for clarification: I thought that it would be a free sample sort of thing like many brands do. If it worked I was fully willing to buy the full size! I haven’t repurchased it as it’s expensive for what it is and there are better less expensive alternatives. @zombietrash416 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I havent watched the video yet, i had to pause it so that i could vent cuz as soon as i saw the title i wanted to warn people about the products before they buy anything.
So in 2022 i bought the foundation. I was constantly seeing the ad at the time where all of the women are raving about the full coverage and staying power and basically about it being the most perfect foundation ever. So i wear a full beat of makeup everyday( unless its the one or two days of the week where i dont leave my house ) so that includes a full coverage foundation. Ive been wearing full coverage foundations for around 15 years so ive tried alot of brands and alot of formulas. When i bought the Il Makiage i was looking for a new one because the one i had been using was discontinued. The ad said that it was unbelievably full coverage that itll cover rosacea and pretty intense acne. I have pretty decent skin and the reason i wear full coverage is that i have a few spots on my face where my skins a bit uneven from old acne and because im so pale if i ever break out the redness is very apparent. Beyond the odd breakout my skins pretty decent its nothing compared to the skin they show in the ad so when seeing the foundation easily cover some pretty intense redness in the ad i thought that if it actually works that good i should have no problem. So when i got it in and tried it i was just annoyed and had really gotten my hopes up. They rave about how good their shade match test is and it shade matched me pretty well. I dont really have a problem shade matching as long as the brand has a pale enough shade for me. But as soon as i pumped out some of the foundation and dotted it all around my face i knew right away that it wasnt full coverage. It is literally a light coverage to medium at best if you build it up. I even unskrewed the top off of it to try to get it to thicken for a couple weeks which aways works with every foundation i do that with but it didnt change whatsoever. Like i said even if you build up layers youll only get medium coverage at best. Ive used it maybe around a dozen times and each time i hope its gonna be better than the last time but im always disappointed. Ive had it for almost two years now and i actually decided to give it another chance last week and its gone even thinner than before! Yes i shake it and nothing. How did it get thinner? Im not gonna throw it out cuz it was over $50CAD i just kinda hold onto it as a foundation for when my skin looks perfect. I cant believe the level of lies they tell in the ads for that foundation. I did watch a youtube video about the founation about a year ago where the creator zoomed in at the part of the ads when theyre brushing on the foundation onto very red irritated skin and you could see that theyve photoshopped the peoples skin as the brush is moving across their face to make the foundation so flawless. I was kinda pissed at myself for not looking into it better before i bought the foundation. I really think that there should be a class action lawsuit because the expectation and the reality are day and night.

I might get similar results with another brand, but this has been working really well for me, but only if I prep my skin in advance. I hated the way they used a blur filter. They have used some sort of blurring and smoothing effect _(or something like that)_ on the face, some kind of _"fade"_ of the entire picture in the video that makes it look like it's a really bad quality video - just watch the first ad that he shows and keep your eye on the bottle of concealer; in the beginning both the face and bottle is clear and in good focus, but by the end it's like it's a haze/fog over the entire picture, especially visible on the text on the bottle - and last but not least it looks like they might also have done something with the light too, to make it harder to actually see any of the perceived _"imperfections"_ in their models skin. It's all just *really* bad.
I think it's sweet of Robert to give them the benefit of the doubt that it's just bad quality videos - but I am pretty sure that this is *very much* a conscious choice they have made, to _"retouch"_ the videos to make it look like their foundation performs pure magic by matching their skin tone *perfectly* and smoothing out all lines and other _"imperfections"._

    I LOVE a Robert rant!!
This is totally separate but on the subject of companies that over-advertise ... I am determined to never use J**es R**d because the ubiquity of their ads on TH-cam drives me absolutely insane. I have no idea how good or bad their products are, and I'm never going to find out. I know that's probably an algorithm thing but I can't. I'm even redacting just in case, I don't want to make them send me MORE ads!!

listen i will say, while they did not colour match me correctly (but my tone is a bit difficult tbh bc I'm pretty pale and I get flushed cheeks easily despite having a neutral/cool undertone) their customer service was wonderful tbh.
i originally used their products like 5 years ago probably? idk time isn't real anymore but I was obsessed with their concealer because to this day, it's one of the only concealers I've found that is like my EXACT skintone (though now I found that actually just using a buildable foundation in the right shade works equally good) but i stopped using it because tbh it was just too expensive and the quality wasn't really worth it when i could buy smth from the drugstore for a quarter of the cost
side note but if you're pale and/or have dry skin, highly recommend colourpop's pretty fresh foundation for a more affordable option, and rare beauty's liquid touch one if you're able to spend a bit more
edit: just wanted to add that while i did re-purchase the concealer several times, i never bought their foundation again, because even though the colour was beautiful, the texture/finish was not great for my dry skin

Robert thank you for calling this out! As a woman in her 50's it just not a realistic representation of the foundation. This is why I don't wear foundation anymore and get skin products and treatments so my skin looks better without makeup. It's a struggle.

I so agree with it, I saw the adds and immediately dismissed because it looks so so artificial. After watching this now I know that the product is actually good but it’s just the way they advertise. Thanks Robert!!

Thank you so much for revealing the backstory - and backside! - of the internet promotion of cosmetics. It makes me crazy to see how companies twist things - even when they have great products. It absolutely NOT ok!

Fuck this brand. Ugh. I've had beef with them for years. A friend convinced me to get a free makeover at Il Makiage. I was excited and went. I had planned on buying something. The lady starts out by pretty much poo-pooing the foundation I use (mind you, I went foundationless today *because* I knew I was getting my makeup done). The lady tries to tell me how high quality their stuff is and blahblahblah. I genuinely did like one eyeshadow and the bronzer. I was going to buy those things. But the lady kept pushing me to buy the foundation and brushes, which were like 60 bucks each. No prices were listed btw. I told her I couldnt spend that much, I'm unemployed, $280 is probably more than I spend in a year. She wasnt backing down. So I panicked, blurted out "IM PREGNANT AND MY WATER JUST BROKE GOTTA GO BYE" and darted out lmaoooo
