    • @esotericoctopus

      Right? Even if I like a celebrity, I generally assume a brand is gonna be trash until proven otherwise. There have been some good ones, but they feel like the exception rather than the rule.

    • @LunarEleven
      @LunarEleven ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Same. And I trust the celebrities less as well. They never mention the in-office treatments they get for all the things skincare product can't fix. And if their products are affordable for me, I know they aren't actually using them. It's just a manipulative, pathetic cash grab. And miss me with this "age positive" nonsense! Most people hate aging, and I don't need preachy celebrities making me feel bad for not being happy about getting older. I just do not believe Ellen has never had fillers or anything done to combat nature, so much like "be kind", "age positivity" is just another philosophy Ellen doesn't actually represent.

    • @LunarEleven
      @LunarEleven ปีที่แล้ว +79

      @@esotericoctopusI think the rare exceptions are the result of a celebrity actually having a genuine interest in skincare/makeup. Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez come to mind. They seem like they really have fun with it and they actually know what is in their products and why.
      Stark contrast to Brad Pitt who couldn't have looked less interested in what he was talking about. *YAWN*..."What was I saying? Something about grape skin? I'm Brad Pitt, just buy this crap. Look, we used a whole tree trunk for the cap. It's luxury."

      The only celeb line I genuinely loved was Salma Hayek's Nuance, which sold at CVS. Incredible, budget-friendly products she co-created in the lab using many of her late Mexican grandmother's beauty formulas. She was also refreshingly transparent when asked if she used her own products, the answer being yes AND the higher end stuff. Was really sad when Nuance was discontinued.

    I’m usually less trustful of a celebrity brand, unless that celebrity has legit expertise or lived experience to bring to the brand. For example, I love Fenty because RiRi basically shamed every other brand into getting their shit together on inclusion in foundation, both in shade and undertones. I love Rare because all of the packaging can be opened with one hand, or with hands that shake, both issues I have dealt with as part of my disability. (Selena Gomez has lupus, and often has weakness in her hands as a result, hence the accessible design.) Both of these women weren’t only famous and beautiful like essentially every other beauty like spokesperson - they took the issues they had IRL with existing makeup on the market and filled those gaps. That’s the opposite of just slapping their name and face on it and raking in the cash.

    • @adhdhamster
      @adhdhamster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Exactly. Vs just "I just wanted to" they had actual reasons to get involved. I know kvd is controversial... But it started out as a way to help people cover tattoos if they want or need. So you can be yourself but cover if you have some need. Like there were pencils to color correct as a base and then the foundation REALLY did cover. When it first came out I covered my sleeve just for fun to see if it was legit and it worked. It blew my mind. And I know someone might question why a tattoo artist of all people would want people to help cover them up but I can't imagine a better person than someone who really gets it... Anyway... Just another example lol

    Tyra’s brand being an MLM is ridiculous. Like you said in the video, it was completely unnecessary from her, and predatory. I cannot stand MLMs, the only people that can make decent money from it are people who are already popular or influential in some way. Those at the bottom are getting sucked into a cycle of making a minute ‘profit’ and having to spend that on their own stock. I went to my colleagues ‘launch party’ for BodyShop At Home years ago and the lady who recruited her was telling her to spend her profits on buying party game prizes and stuff like that. It was ridiculous and very eye opening. ‘Reinvest in your business’ is what she said. My colleague was a single mum looking to make extra income. It was beyond predatory.

    There were tabloids and magazines taking unflattering photos and calling Tyra fat years ago. She went onto her show and said “kiss my fat ass” under the guise of body positivity and it became a huge phenomenon at the time. Which is likely where the inspiration came from for the mascara.

    I remember back in the early 90s my mom buying Victoria Principal's (actress known for Dallas) skincare line. Back when it could only be purchased from tvl. I guess celebrity beauty brands will always be around, but I tend to side eye the ones that don't have much of an identity apart from the celebrity. Like Rare Beauty and Haus Labs are very well done in a way that I can forget they're celebrity founded brands.

    I don’t mind a celebrity coming out with a makeup line if they’re really invested in it. You can tell if they actually use their products and if they had a hand in helping formulate their products. If they care about consistency and quality and the customer’s experience. THAT makes it feel more luxury and special to me. When a celebrity just slaps their name on a product but can hardly describe it, what ingredients it contains or why it is beneficial to use, then it cheapens it for me. The quote that always comes to mind is Kylie Jenner “I use and like this primer bc it’s a really good primer” saying this about HER OWN primer 🤔 what??! So the answer to whether it feels a bit more luxury or cheaper with a celeb attached depends 🤷‍♀️ love your makeup look! Congrats on the Hello Fresh sponsorship 🎉 well deserved 👏 👏

    The smack my fat lash mascara is referencing to years ago when Tyra was featured on a tabloid in her swimsuit and people were making mean comments about her figure. I bought my first rare beauty blush yesterday because they donated 100% of the purchase to charity for world mental health day and it’s so beautiful and you are so right about how amazing rare beauty is. In my opinion the only thing that having a celebrity be the owner of a company does is give them more promotion and people who are diehard fans of that person will buy it, but I think it doesn’t work out long-term that’s why only companies that are actually good stay long-term like Fenty beauty, rare beauty, and haus labs. If a company is actually not good, and there is no passion behind it. then it will eventually die

    For me it depends on how many brands that celebrity has attached to them. It’s the same thing for influencers. The more selective that celebrity/influencer is, the more I’m willing to trust them.
    For companies themselves, it really says a lot about them by who they are willing to work with and how many notable people they want to work with. It comes across as they don’t know who their target audience is. So they’d rather just go for anyone.

Quality over Quantity should always be a standard! Especially if the product is being applied to our SKIN. It's really hard nowadays to separate genuine love for "Skin care & Makeup" versus releasing brands or products, because of a "Celebrity Name."

    If it does match the vibe, the only thing that makes me think of them as luxury is if they are a person I associate with being luxurious otherwise I'm expecting prices to be the same as competitors.

    ANSWER: depends on the celebrity. Like, Lady Gaga I was always excited about because she's a true artist and passionate about the artistic space, and she proved it by just overhauling her entire brand when she wasn't happy with it and it is so amazing now. But say Jennifer Aniston? Why would I buy from her? I don't know her personality or passions at all, it seems fake. And say J.Lo, sure she works in the arts as well but she seems more... it's all about me, compared to Gaga who's all about her dancers, her fans, the LGBTQI community, supporting others. Very different vibes.
