Roger was on pins & needles the whole 2nd week of this tournament after Nadal lost... he got past Tommy Haas only by a whisker, and had a similar close call in this match with Delpotro playing at such a high level. But the moment this thriller ended, i think everyone understood that Soderling wouldn't be able to threaten Roger, and that a historic French Open title would surely be his.

It is like a larger scale 2 sets to love feeling that Fed had because he knew Nadal wasn’t standing in the way. Tennis is such a mind game.

The joke is that Federer lost to Rafa in the AO final that year and then had luck that Rafa lost to Söderling here and then was injured so he couldn’t play Wimbledon. Federer wouldn’t have won any GS in 2009 with Rafa being his opponent in the two finals

This is one of the very best clay court matches ever, especially for those spectators who generally prefer grass or hard court surfaces because even though they like a hard struck ball and good rallies, they don't want to see every point go 10-25 shots which is typical on clay. Because of the amazing talent of these guys, both at their peak I would say, this match has everything. Don't understand why this match is not featured more as a classic. It is truly an awesome match. I knew Del Potro was fabulous at his peak, especially when he beat Fed at the 2009 U.S. Open but I had no idea Roger could really play this well on clay. This match deserves more publicity. I got to see Del Po live in Cincy in 2013 but while his forehand was still awesome, he clearly wasn't quite at the level he was pre-injury, especially on the backhand side. I was really impressed to see how well Roger could hit hard when he needed to and his creativity and strategizing because at this point you could not outhit Del Po, you could outplay him maybe with smarts and all the talent in the world and that's what Fed had.

That forehand in the point starting at 32:16 is one of the biggest forehands I have ever seen. The force and sound of whip took me out of my seat, it's almost like he's hitting it backspin it is that flat. I haven't seen many highlights of Federer on clay but this explains why he reached multiple consecutive finals here, he got by Del Potro with every skill and shot at his disposal and certainly on any other day where he wasn't able to employ his A+++ level at distinct points in the match he would have lost. On so many occasions he neutralized the devastating power of Del Potro by employing a barrage of off-brand and off-pace shots. He'd commonly hit 2 or 3 consecutive slices or off-pace shots using such unconventional/beautiful/spontaneous/ad-lib/genius? racquet paths resulting in an absurd variety of spin and providing that tiny extra moment of hesitation in the Del Potro missile factory that prevented him from being able to properly lock and load and seemingly blow Fed off the court every time. Unbelievable mastery but boy was Del Potro a beauty too.
