This was a "now or never" situation for Roger, without Rafa in the other side of the net, and he handled it like a champion. As a fan, it was hard to see Rafa, despite being friends, punishing him without mercy year after year, just like telling him "I love you Roger, but while I´m here, you have no chance to lift these trophy". And one day Soderling happened. The rest is history

It's fair in a way. Federer is the exact same kind of being for Andy Roddick, who also won a GS before Roger kicked in, and never got a chance after that

And he only did it because Nadal lost to Soderling. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this title was undeserved…but in terms of level played, this was one of Fed’s worst slam victories.

@@mikemoggerson6651Nadal is a slow surface merchant and the most overrated tennis player to ever exist. Sure his numbers suggest he’s one of the greatest ever, but if you look at his play style and tennis skill it’s the antithesis to Federer. Both Roger and Novak are way, way more skilled tennis players than Nadal which is why Nadal has almost zero success on medium or fast courts, and can mainly only dominate on clay and very slow hard court. The other 2 could win on anything but were better on medium fast and fast surfaces. A lot of people hate Novak because he holds all the records, but if you look at the results and how they play, it’s actually NADAL who is the one-dimensional grinder with zero ability to play true attacking tennis.
His entire game revolved around being left handed and hitting high topspin, high net clearance forehands to his opponent’s BH side OVER AND OVER. Uncle Toni is brilliant for making Nadal play left handed even though he’s naturally a righty. If you watch a Nadal vs Federer match, the entire match is pretty much him moonballing to Fed’s backhand over and over until he finally makes an error. Skill wise, he is the least impressive great player I have ever seen. His forehand technique is the opposite of textbook and his serve is an absolute joke compared to Roger’s or even Novak’s. If he was right handed he would win like 3 grand slams

@@Mark-ut5oq I agree with a lot of this its true Nadal is more one dimensional with the heavy reliance on clay. However lets not pretend Novak would win a lot on true "fast" courts. The surfaces have been continuously slowed down over the years to the point where what people think is "fast" now is actually incredibly slow compared to what was fast before. The only one of the 3 old enough to experience those truly "fast" courts and the one with the aggressive game style to be successful on them was Fed.

The most important match in Fed’s career didn’t even involve him, it was the match between Soderling and Nadal. Also I would say the next most important match in his career was Wimbledon 2019, if he won that he would still be in the goat debate and would have a decent enough case for it, especially in comparison to Nadal

There wasn't much for Soderling in the first set, but you could see how well he was playing in the 2nd and 3rd, set. He had a game plan and it worked reasonably well, but Roger was being Roger, and the rain/humidity and the adaptation to it must have also impacted them.

Soderling does the impossible, beats Thanos Rafa on Chatrier, then gets destroyed by Federer in the final. I feel for the guy ngl. But was happy for Federer since he basically lost like 5 french finals in a row to Rafa

This message is to all Nadal and Djokovic fans/fanboys: Say thank you to the ATP court makers that your guys won that many slams! If the playing conditions were still like in the 90s, Nadal would have 0 Wimbledon titles and Djokovic with a bit of luck 1 or 2. Back in those days, you couldnt even play form the baseline (even Borg and Lendl were forced to play serve and volley) since there were three factors together:
    1) flat bouncing
    2) very fast bouncing
    3) bad bouncing
All these 3 conditions together were never there since 2004/05. And Nadal + Djokovic profited from it.
Playing conditions from the 90s, means:
Australian Open: Medium fast + medium bouncing
French Open: Slow + high bouncing
Wimbledon: Very fast + flat bouncing + bad bouncing
US Open: Very fast + medium bouncing
    Federer prime > Djokovic/Nadal prime
Federer s game was simply the most complete from them all. Nadal and Djkovic are excellent players from the baseline, but not so much when forced to go on the net over and over again, something they never had to face!
Look Federer vs Sampras in Wimbledon 2001 and Federer vs Nadal in Rome 2006. He went 5 sets with the best grass courter ever (Sampras) in Wimbledon and 5 sets with the best clay courter ever (Nadal), and both matches were very close.
Beam a prime Djokovic or Nadal in Wimbledon 2001 and let them play against Pete. Sampras would beat both of them in 3 or 4 sets, no ground ralleys possible.
And beam a prime Sampras in 2006 and let him play Nadal on clay, Rafa would demoslih him in 3.
Federer s game 2003-2007: Best and most complete Tennis in history.
    Buttom line:
The ATP court makers changed the history. They removed the pre 2002 Wimbledon playing conditions completely.
Sure they could have done it, but to make it even again they should have change the French Open playing conditinos, using small balls which with a very low bouncing. But they didnt do that.

Nadal was virtually unbeatable at this tournament between 2005-2014. I see nothing embarrassing about Federer loosing to him so many times. I believe Federer would have also had a better chance if he faced the 2015-2016 version of Nadal in Federer's prime.
