F1: Why has Lewis Hamilton decided to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari in 2025?

Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Hamilton's current contract with Mercedes is due to expire at the end of 2025 but he will depart the team after this season and replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari.
The seven-time world champion is the most successful driver in F1 history with 103 wins and 104 pole positions.

If he actually wins it with ferrari, that will be a fairytale way to end a career. titles with mclaren, mercedes and ferrari. definitely cements GOAT status

They will want to win the Constructors championship and they can’t do that without both drivers.
Is that any different from other seasons (2016, 2022 & 2023)? In 2016 MB swapped 5 key personal between Lewis and Nico’s crews. Nico went on to the win the Championship. Mercedes has since lost their way with the no sidepod monstrosity, and refused to trust Lewis’ insights and recommendations on the crappy 2022 & 2023 cars.

Whether they can win or not, EVERY good driver wants to drive for Ferrari before ending their career. I'm not really a Hamilton fan, but I hope he does well. It's a massive shake-up!

Mercedez can play smart now. They should let all the potential drivers compete a bit before signing anybody. We are talking about Albon, Sainz, Piastri, Gasly, Ocon, Tsunoda and even Alonso thinking about this!! I would also not rule out Vettel, could be a dream come back for him!
I get goosebumps when I imagine Sebastian Vettel in a Mercedes racing wheel-to-wheel vs Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari.

There was one Seb Vettel, who had 4 world championship titles with RB. He lost his patience when RB were not as competitive after he won the 4th title. He moved to Ferrari. That was the beginning of end for him..

I said this would happen in 2022. I have never been a ferrari fan in my 41 years following F1 so that's going to be new. I'm really looking forward to seeing him accomplish what Alonso & Seb couldn't do. 🎉

Mercedes have fallen off the past few years during Red Bull's dominance. If you're going to be the "best of the rest" it makes sense to do it with Ferrari. The money, prestige, and well... it's Ferrari, the only team to have raced every year of F1's existence. Hamilton was always going to end up here eventually. So, why not now?
I personally don’t think Alex is going anywhere…. They obviously want to build the team around him granted, being on the same team with his really close friend would be really awesome to see but I just don’t think he would want to go to Mercedes.
Not shocking, George Russell and Hamilton did not get along and it was getting quite toxic. But Ferrari as a team suck...

Yes great news and can be explained, it makes a lot of sense, if I try to be in Lewis mind I would think that alright I have one more chance to win Championship in 2024 with Mercedes but if the car is still not good enough then he will have another shoot with Ferrari in 2025, I do not think that Lewis want to be in F1 with the new rules as of 2026.

Ferrari is too much of an Allure for any driver to resist, so it's understandable that Lewis decided to end his F1 career with Ferrari. It's a devastating loss for Mercedes. To understand Lewis' decision one could argue that 2024 Mercedes is not to Lewis liking of which he's been persisting Mercedes to make certain changes. So, it could be about Engineers v/s The Driver decision.
