In all his years of toil, he's never seen anything like that. That's the kind of reanimation he could only dream about. Like a painter laying eyes on a Picasso. Like the first time Clapton heard Hendrix. Qyburn appreciated it the most, because he had the fullest understanding of its impossibility. And such glee, thinking maybe he could learn to harness it.

      I know Sandor hated Gregor, but I always thought Gregor looked at his brother with indifference. He just didn't seem to care about Sandor one way or another, no love or hate, pretty much how the mountain viewed everyone and everything else, even in the books. He was angry at him a few times, but as long as you left him alone and he wasn't instructed to harm you, you'd be fine.

  • @CarbonDoggie
    @CarbonDoggie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    Rather than something like a zombie, I think he's pretty much been made into the equivalent of a flesh Golem. That can carry out rudimentary commands, differentiate between targets, attack, defend, etc. It seems that the "process" of turning him into such a thing, removed his personality, sense of pain and likely many other things. I think Qyburn used, not just sorcery, but a blend of that and alchemy to complete this process.

    • @guyverjay1289
      @guyverjay1289 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah but it didnt strip him of his personality. He was quite aware who the hound was and defied his duty and orders to protect his queen because he wanted to fight him

    • @cid2852
      @cid2852 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@guyverjay1289 I had a theory that Gregor was always aware of himself and who everyone was and such, and he probably didn't even like Qyburn. But maybe Qyburn had to periodically do something that only he knew how to do in order to keep him going (as an insurance policy because if anything happens to Qyburn, Gregor dies too). So Gregor just had to tolerate him and do what he said. But at the end, Gregor knew it didn't really matter since everyone was dead anyway. So he decided to dumpster Qyburn and get that last fight with his brother out of the way first.

      +Paul E. For sure. Good and bad are relative concepts. taking the lives of some of the people cersei sent him was pretty messed up tho.

    • @Fady117
      @Fady117 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Paul E. Agreed, Qyburn is definitely interesting, and cannot be judged as either good or bad, they are relative concepts, and all he really cares about is pursuing his experiments freely. Tho it kinda was bleh when he "invented the giant crossbow" when he offered a way to retaliate against the dragons.... and I could have sworn there was poison involved and I was double certain Drogon got poisoned when Bronn shot him with that greatarrow. But nah. No magical anti-dragon poison. Just a military machine, which, all the military people never thought of creating. Honestly, the wildfire was much more interesting to me than the giant crossbow. I hope Qyburn beats the invention of wildfire with something far darker and more dangerous.

    This is a very interesting theory and insight into Qyburn! I am very curious to see how Qyburn's story unfolds as well as the Mountain! This is my first time seeing your video! I enjoy seeing all the quotes you throw into your video! @@bridge4 Since making this comment I've watched most of your GoTs videos and you do a fantastic job. I'm a huge fan of the show, but I haven't had time to read the books because I'm in law school and working and I also really don't enjoy audio books for anything. So your videos really give me great insight into deep concepts in the books that would take me dozens of hours to get to yet you can condense hours of reading down to 10 minute or so videos. It's really helpful and helped me understand the real differences between the books and the show. So keep it up man, I'll be a loyal watcher as the long wait till April continues.
      Also, I do hope to get to the books someday, but I need to wait till I'm done with law school in a year and a half. Hopefully the next book will be out by then so I don't become yet another of the millions of fans George has kept waiting. I'll still have the final book to wait on either way though so it's a mostly fruitless effort.

    • @bridge4

      Consider "knight of the seven kingdoms" first. Even the audio book although you said you don't like them
      It's three novellas. 2 hours each if I recall correctly..commonly know as "the tales of dunk and egg"
      They are narrated great and are a ton of fun. Not as "heavy" as the main books. So it might be a nice breather for ya when you take breaks from studying (assuming that your limited breaks aren't consumed by eating and sleeping lol)
      Goodluck in lawschool. It'll pay off in the long run. Kick ass!

    In my opinion, Qyburn has created a wight, as I am sure somewhere deep in the citadel there are scrolls and books detailing the ancient magical practices which I'm sure include how to bring the dead back to life. Noting that there is a whole study regarding magic, that is probably sparsely studied giving him plenty of time and opportunity to study whatever he found interesting, uninterrupted. And I do think at some point the Night King will take control of the mountain and wreak havoc from within kings landing. Currently the mountain is loyal to Qyburn, being that he basically created him, not Cersi. And seeing that Qyburn is very interested in magic and the like, it's in his best interests for the magically imbued characters to survive, so he can continue his research. 🤷‍♂️

    I've been curious as to the links of raising the dead between Qyburn and the Nightking. Assume they both use black magic, albeit Qyburn combines this with alchemy of some sort. (If anyone of you is familiar with Magic: The Gathering, you could view it as a difference in the same way that Liliana and Geralf both raise dead by with different means and with similar but not the same results.)
    I'm curious as to the state of the raised dead differ. It appears to me, from watching the show, that the wights of the Nightking are mindless killing machines, the white walkers are sentient undead who controll the wights, and the Nightking commands rather than controls the white walkers. If we assume that Ser Robert Strong (henceforth SRS) is also a sentient undead, then perhaps the Nightking cannot control him? I've also been pondering two outcomes in story progression concerning Qyburn. One is that, after the white walkers breach the Wall, Qyburn convinces Cercei that they may need an army, strong and fearless, to combat the white walkers and be given the means to create more "soldiers" like SRS by kidnapping, killing and raising denizens of King's Landing - something that might also prove insanely useful in the upcoming war with Daenarys and Jon. Another outcome is that Qyburn still controls SRS and might seize the opportunity to claim the power by killing Cercei now that Jaime is gone. A rather loose thought I base solely on the stereotype of necromancers being true to themselves alone, for whatever reason they may have.

    Well in the books it´s obviously mentioned that he was poisoned by the same insects poison, as daenerys almost was when she met this greybird guy, the former kingsguard commander (pardon me i forgot his name). And it´s also stated that the red viper was skilled in the poison craft and had traveled to asshai (if i recall it right) where he learned to weave magic into it. To prolonge suffering, increase pain, you get the point. And quyburn is being told as been thrown out the citadel for opening living bodies as he wanted to understand the nature of death, as opossed to the other maesters who only engulfed themselves with studying the nature of life. Also he seems to had some darker interest, concerning magic, which was also a great part of the reason he was given the boot. i Can´t remember the exact line in the books, but there is some mention of him feeling pulled torwards magic. He mentions something about understanding life and death better than any taught maester, so that might have been a hint to necromancy. Maybe he used something similiar to what the maegie who killed/zombified Khal Drogo did

    imagine a scene where the night king kills the mountain but he can't reanimate him due to him already having been revived as a zombie. Or maybe a scene where he doesn't kill him, but turns him then and there into his own zombie just by touching him since he's already dead

  • @onuw
    @onuw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    He's an alchemist - basically, a magical chemist.
    I wonder - now that he knows of the wights, will he study them and add to his reanimation repertoire? Would he then gain the ability to reanimate something long dead? If so, would it enable him ro replace the Mountain's head with say.... a dragon skull? Kind of a stretch, i know, just thinking of how cool it would be.

      I always assume he was kicked out of the Maester's College for necromancy. He says something about how his research went beyond the bounds of what the college allowed.

      When he saw the wights I was wondering if he might try to animate the dragon skeletons. That would be bad against Dany and Jon, but good against the white walkers.

    To make a correction to "Magic has always been around". It is revealed when Danny is at the House of the Undying that magic was indeed gone from the world. The Warlocks did not have any powers until her Dragons were born, her bringing dragons back into the world also brought magic back into the world. And it's why the Warlocks wanted the Dragons.

    I've always been a fan of characters using an alchemical approach to necromancy instead of just a wave of the hands and an incantation. It sort of reigns in their power and keeps it reasonable. I'm not sure about the headless interpretation, however. I'm not sure Qyburn would do something that would make it so incredibly obvious that horrible magic was in play.

      The show doesn't have a headless Gregor. When Cersei asked Gregor to punish that nun who annoyed her with the "SHAME" stuff, Gregor took his helmet off, and it was still his actor's face (but with a lot of makeup to make it seem damaged and pale, basically undead). The show no longer follows the books much, though, so it might be different in the books.

      do you have a particular curiosity or viewpoint you'd like to see address related to the high sparrow?
