    So here's to the next point you mentioned there's a routine I used to do I learned for racing and it works awesome and it'll teach you the perfect sale angles for your particular sale configuration what you need to do is let your boom and your jib swing all the way out and then slowly start swinging them in a little bit at a time until you find the optimal angles those angles will change based on the angle the wind is hitting the sails at so experimentation is the key. Generally speaking the boom should be tighter for heavy wind and the boom should be swung out in light wind, but if you do this exercise each time you sail youll learn the optimal angles for the given condition

    I've sailed thousands of nautical miles and crossed the Pacific in my sailing life. Along the way had a number of different sailboats. Among them have been 2 Catalina 30s and one Catalina 27. I think they are terrific boats. They sail great, are designed well, and offer a lotta boat for the money. Hope you continue to enjoy many years of sailing.

      So, this is about 4yo now. Hopefully you've figured out your jib sheet. There are essentially 3 Way to run that sheet: 1 drop the mast. So, do not drop the mast; 2. A use a bowsons seat. So don't do that unless you're confident, stupid, or have other things to work on; 3 someone on that lake , probably you marina, has a sling to lift your boat out of the water or off a trailer. Pay someone to use it to lift you up to run the sheets. Harness on be careful. It'll be over in 10 minutes. While your up there check everything. Put a solar powered led mast light up. Never go up there again.
      Cheers

    Great vid you produced on the 27! Im thinking about doing the liveaboard thing again and thinking about a Catalina 30 or possibly something as small as a 27. Previously was a liveaboard in San Diego while in the military on Regulas, a 36.5 ft Lancer sloop. I really enjoyed the liveaboard life style, easily he best years of my life! Got to give credit to AO1 Stokely for the inspiration for being a liveaboard as he introduced me to the life style on his, you guessed it, 27ft Catalina!

      As an electrician I can pretty confidently say that none of you really know what you are talking about - you are just expressing opinions that seem logical to you.
      "Experts"
      Wire always has ratings for usage and environment, use only the proper usage rating for whatever its purpose and environment will be. Generally it will be written both on the box and along the insulation every few feet. Check a code book(there are tables with listing and usage) and don't listen to anyone that doesn't have a lisence to do electrical work.

  • @benkanobe7500
    @benkanobe7500 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is 3 years old and you have probably moved on by now. I want to ask anyway for a comparison. I live in San Diego and grew up on the west coast. I can find a Catalina 27 to say a Catalina 30 all day long for around 2,500.00-$5,000. They are all great boats and all need cosmetic improvements and other doable things a new owner could do over time. However, on the west coast, there isn't anywhere you can rent a slip for anything under $1,000.00/month. What did/does it cost you for your slip, what do slips cost where you live as slip costs here make it financially impractical to own a boat due to slip costs, not boat costs/boat maintenance costs.

    Catalina's really are cheaply made sail boats that none the less have a loyal following. The thing is they are pretty fair in the important areas. It's the cabinetry and wiring and the plumbing. You want to check all your thru hulls but your rigging, mast and traveller have the potential of being as good as many newer, nicer boats. Marine stores will have options for climbing the mast. Or pay someone. Good luck. I hope to get a '79 Lancer next week and aside from living 10 years on a 32' Express Cruiser i have about the same knowledge of sailboats. I did work in fibreglass for a year so that's a plus. Good luck. I'm sure you will learn and d joy. Mine is going to suffice as my home too.

    Thank you for the tour. I found your video while looking for information about the Catalina 27. I'm thinking of buying one that's for sale for $800 at a marina. People say a Catalina 30 would be much more roomy and make a better liveaboard, but I need a shallower draft (C30 is 5' & C27 is 4' approximately). How tall are you? Or, a better question is, how much headroom is there?

      But yeah, I was born in the US, grew up in a relatively stable household, went to a decent college, all of which are privileged. But also went to public school, worked every summer from age 16 until college graduation, studied my ass off to graduate top 10% of my engineering class, and graduated with a ton of student loan debt that I've since paid off.
      Always two sides to the story my dude, but I admit its definitely a combination of privilege and hard work.
