Brian was struggling with love for his wife and love for a lover. But when you apply the lyrics to Freddie, it takes on a whole new meaning. Still makes me cry every time.
Yes, this is the first time the public ever heard this song. It was going to go on an album but because Brian wrote this with three other people who were not part of the band, the matter of royalties was going to be difficult so it was scrapped from the album because Freddie and other band members just really didn't want to deal with the bookkeeping aspect of using this song. Later, after Freddie's passing, the studio version of this song, with Freddie singing it, was put on an album and a video made to go with it. Brian also did a solo version of this song with a video and it is so emotional, I cry every time I watch it. I also cried when I heard this in the Tribute Concert. Looking at Brian's face, you can see the pain. This song is about the breakup of his first marriage and the affair he was having that was having at the time, while his wife was pregnant with their third child. This situation was devastating for Brian for many reasons not the least of which it meant he would not be living with this three children who were and still are to him, the greatest gifts of his life. On this day, the remaining members of Queen were melancholy it seemed, very happy for the outpouring of support for Freddie and proud of what they had put together for him in this concert, but sad as this was in a way, a final goodbye to both Freddie and Queen.
Brian is prone to depression and was suicidal during his divorce. He met Anita in 1986 before the Wembley concert. She was a friend of Freddie through Peter Straker. She asked him to produce her first album which he did and the rest is history. He was in love with both his wife, Chrissie and Anita. When they shot the Breakthru video he said it was a wonderful day for him because his life was such sh** at the time and the video got his mind off what he was going through. So, too much love means loving two people at the same time and not wanting to hurt or leave either one. Freddie's voice suits the song better but Brian singing it breaks your heart.
I was very close to the front of the stage, i will say less than a minute in to this song me and all my mates where sobbing. I will admit on this day we all sobbed a lot and it wasn't just down to the drink and drugs. A very emotional memory and a day i will never forget.
I imagine the whole evening was emotional anyway, then hearing this 😢 I’d have been in floods, I am now, rewatching it. Thanks for sharing your memories 🙏
Yes, Brian released this as a song on his solo album, BUT Freddie recorded this too years before and it's on Made In Heaven. Same song, but has two completely different vibes imo. Brian's feel more emotional actually, which is only natural since it's a personal song for him. Freddie's version is great too of course.
Outstanding song writer and he shows it here….what I have always loved about Brian in particular is the softness in his voice. Especially when contrasted with the powerhouse of Freddie Mercury and even Roger Taylor. He is also a legend, let’s just not wait until he is gone to acknowledge it. ❤️
Hap, the give away line that explains it all : “Torn between your lover And the love you leave behind” … this was about Brian feeling torn between his mistress/now second wife Anita (the lover) and his first wife Chrissie who was pregnant with his 3rd child (the love you leave behind).
To this day, I have not been able to watch that tribute concert. I have seen tidbits and John's traumatized face and even usually cheerful Roger's expression was reason enough for me not click on this piece of history.---You spoke right from my heart...the journey is not supposed to end and it will last for eternity.☮
Such an emotional song, but Brian managed to compose and perform with a quivering voice, most likely shaking inside, and welling up with tears.I really give him credit for that. Forget for a moment he is superstar Brian, but a person dealing with his nightmare that he had to make a head over heart decision and there is no right decision in his case, along with all the other painful issues he was dealing with. He had to or would have destroyed him. I can imagine it was extremely difficult for him to profess that song for which only he knew what it was about, that first performance of that song eventually made it easier to live and except his deamons and decision. Even though it may haunt him at times. HAP, your reaction was real and compassionate. Yes enjoy your fairytale of Freddie and Queen. I respect that! You'll know when you're ready to react you just will. 💜🎵💜🎵
Another great reaction, thanks! As the others have said, Brian wrote it about his situation but he acknowledge in an interview that many of the words can fit for Freddie's situation as well. I prefer Freddie's vocal but both are good and you have to hand it to Brian for being able to sing that at that time. Those last few years had been extremely hard on the whole band. Quite frankly, I don't know how they held it together. I would have been a mess.
Great one Teresa! In Brian's case it was because he was married with children and loved his wife but then met his soul mate in Anita. (too much love) Also other things going on during that time where he became suicidal. (will kill you) He talks about this in several interviews. I think singing it at this concert was....I don't know? Too much love killed Freddie? Guessing here.
It means that the more people you love the more hurt you have when you lose them. And they were all piling on when he wrote this song and performed this song. And Brian deals with depression on his good days. This is also about the same time when he was considering suicide.
This is the first time it had been heard. There is also a version that Freddie sang which appeared on the "Made in Heaven" CD which was released in 1995. Brian was having some issues when he wrote this song. His marriage was breaking up. His dad had died. And Freddie had died. There are things here that I would not have mentioned because it's not my place, but Brian has mentioned all of them himself in other places.
@@bluebell3720 “Dad died from cancer in 1991 [the same year as Freddie], he was only 66, really fit and didn’t drink. But he smoked 40 a day and that’s what killed him.”-- quote from Brian May , from an article on 18 Oct 2014 in The Guardian. So when Brian wrote it, his first marriage was failing and his affair in full bloom, Freddie had just told the band he had AIDS , and his father was battling lung cancer.
He wrote it with some friends, as he said, but he lent it to record with Freddie during the sessions for the Made In Heaven album. Then after he performed it here, he then recorded it for his Back to the Light album in 1993. He even performed a duet of this song with Luciano Pavarotti.
This is the first time I have heard this song. Interestingly enough, yesterday I watched a 90 minute interview with Brian to learn more about him. He was still wearing long curls in his thinning silver/gray hair. I have always known about his skillful and emotional guitar playing through Queen performances but not much about the man. Now today I am learning about this song. Thanks, Hap for giving me another piece of the Brian May puzzle. I enjoyed learning about this "piece" of his life. Take care and be well. Peace.
Brian May wrote the song and they (Queen) worked on it when working on the 1989 album "The Miracle". The song wasn't used for that album, and unlike others wasn't used as a B-Side either during that time. They had some takes of Freddie's voice from the demos, though. It also wasn't used for the album "Innuendo", which was the last album Freddie saw released by Queen when he was alive. Then, after Freddie passed away in 1991, Queen did the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert in 1992 at Wembley with a whole lot of famous singers from all over the world (the concert was live on TV around the world) and Brian sung it at that concert. Then Brian completed his solo (well, Brian May Band) album, put it on there and toured with that band '92/'93. Queen took the demos and worked on them and put the song with Freddie's voice on the '95 album "Made in Heaven".
It was released later that year in September 1992 on Brian's "Back To The Light" album, hence Brian's "hasn't made the light of day" comment. The song, as sung by Freddie, was finally released on Queen's "Made In Heaven" album released in 1995.
The video is a "must"- - and a double CD has been released in 2021 with 3 different versions - a studioversion - a guitarversion and a liveversion. It is called Back to the Light- and Out of the Light. I highly recommend it. By the way - Roger Taylor has also released a soloalbum last year called "Outsider" - affected by the lockdown.
Written by Brian May when he had to chose between his wife and children and Anita Dobson that he had fallen in love with and was having an affair with. This was in the middle to later 80s when Freddie also was coming to grips with having Aids and realizing he would have to change his life style. Roger was also going through seperation from his first wife. A time of great turmoil and heartache for the band.
Great reaction HAP. Did you know that FREDDIE also sang this song too ? Yes this was the first time anybody heard this song. This song is on the last album QUEEN made after FREDDIE'S death. You've probably already reacted to these, but there are 2 Queen songs whose lyrics are extremely relevant for what's going on in the world right now. "Is This The World We Created" (either Live Aid or Wembley '86) and "The Miracle" (official video).

You've done so many Queen songs you've probably done this one also, but I couldn't find it on your video list. It's a song that's done by Brian, Roger and John called "No One But You (Only the Good Die Young), and was the last song John Deacon recorded. I'd love to see your reaction. He also sang this with opera singer, its sad as Freddie loved Anita, but also loved Brians 1st wife, same with Rogers 1st wife,he was really close with both the 1st wives, and he was close with Anita
This so was not for Freddie. It was about the struggles in his marriage. Freddie did sing this song which put a different spin on it. It's a beautiful song. Freddie had multiple partners which let him to contracting AIDS.

Life should teach us never to judge anybody's way of life or relationships. Unless we actually held a candle for a couple, there is no way of knowing what is really gping on between two people.
The song is about Brian's struggle, still loving his first wife Christine and having met his new love Anita. Too much love to handle.
What a great vocal performance from Brian. How must it feel to be the Third best singer in a band!
Brian was struggling with love for his wife and love for a lover. But when you apply the lyrics to Freddie, it takes on a whole new meaning. Still makes me cry every time.
This was the first time Brian sung this song. Brian wrote this & sung with such feeling. I love the video also. ❤️🔥❤️🔥👑

Letting go of a relationship because you fell in love /fancied someone else?
I would be more comfortable had he wrote this himself would seem more genuine
Writting it with others seems off
He continued the affair while his wife was pregnant
In the song hes putting it on his wife
Well what would you have done?
Not really appropriate attitude when your wife thought she was happily married and having a third child with you
She had two young children and a baby had to deal with her marriage ending, it being gossiped about all over the papers and neighbours...
According to Brian it was a long drawn out divorce and she didn't get half
Yes I get it if youve fallen out of love...
It just feels off to put someone in that situation then come accross as well what about me it hurt me too!
You would have done the same!
He is now married to Anita but he cheated on her not long after his marriage brake up with his secratary
Had the band said yes it would have been released early 89
Probably a bit difficult for her to have coped with
So he debutes it at Freddies tribute
Again to me seems a bit inappropriate
Freddie just died and hes singing well i was upset when i cheated and left my wife!
Not the time to play poor me Brian!
Harder to deal eith because of the line
Victim of my crime
Good he accepts he was wrong
This is a tribute to someone who died of AIDS at a time people still felt being homosexual should still be a crime
And AIDS was a punishment from God
Life should teach us never to judge anybody's way of life or relationships. Unless we actually held a candle for a couple, there is no way of knowing what is really gping on between two people.
Bluebell the Brian hater. You sure do get around. 🙄
Love the song when sung by Freddie 💔
Please come to the realisation that he's dead
Ok....?
I don't like this.
Freddie is the heart of Queen.❤
I miss him.😢
