Brian wrote this about his marriage breakup. He fell in love with someone else, Anita who he’s still married to now, and about the guilt he felt at hurting his wife. There’s also a beautifully emotional version sung by Freddie, but I always love this one sung by Brian. It’s so much more personal

Dr. Brian May, quite possibly the most thoughtful “rockstar” of the last generation and most likely into the future. And by thoughtful I mean you can tell he is very deliberate in everything he does, methodical, it is logical but leads to being very creative and different. We know him as that super talented musician, of course the guitar, but the piano as well. We know him as an outstanding songwriter. We know him for his Queen harmonies and the occasional soft voice as opposed to Freddie’s powerhouse voice in contrast in some songs. He catches you off guard when he sings alone, his voice is so unusual, it is soft but it can grow powerful very suddenly and at just the right moment. Combine that with his song writing skills and he totally shines. We always pay attention to Freddie, it is difficult not to, but the other members of Queen are just as special and just as talented. It is why the band was so successful. And is still successful today. I am determined to see them live, I think it is important, no matter how you feel about Freddie vs Adam Lambert. Today it is really about Brian, Roger and Spike. ❤️

I think this video is beautifully crafted and photographed. The song itself comes from Brian's emotional struggle, when after being married and had children, met the love of his life. Are you also aware that he has a doctorate degree in astrophysics and has worked in that field, participating also with our NASA on a project or two. The guitar he always plays was made by Brian and his father when he wanted to be in a band but could not afford to buy one. He also has a company that manufactures guitars to his own specifications and at an affordable cost, as well as other high-end musicians' equipment. He is also a photographer and inventor, as well as author. He has been a music producer and has written movie scores. He is also a wonderful, kind, and humble person.. Brian fans, have I forgotten anything?

Brian really brings the emotion into the song, facing the breakdown of his marriage. When Freddie recorded it it also had great emotion, as the words so easily relate to his situation with AIDS. Both very powerful in their own ways.

Yes! I did not research the entire process behind the song. But, I still felt the emotions just by listening and watching the video. Brian had a lot going on. :( . I am a little nervous to hear Freddie's version now. :).

Brian performed this song at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992; saying that he “wrote it a few years before with some friends, but it never saw the light of day.” He not only recorded it for his solo album, Back to the Light, but Freddie recorded it during the Made in Heaven sessions in 1991; months before his death.

All four of them could have had their own solo careers, which is why I think is another reason they were a unique band and why their music was so strong, because each of them wrote songs, and each of them like different genres! Roger has an incredible voice too and was very important in backing Freddie up vocal wise. He could tell when Freddie was getting tired and was able to step up off the cuff if Freddie needed a 20 second vocal break on stage, and they did it in such a way....no one could ever tell. Live aid perfect example, very few at the time knew Freddie had a sever throat infection and his Doctors advised him not to do the concert. Freddie still did, I can't even imagine the pain he was going through because even then he was belting it out strong, and the only glimpse of a struggle you see come out of him and at this point you could tell he was really hurting, was just before the last "Of the world" in the song We are the Champions. You will see him blow in and out a couple times before he hit it, but as usual he NAILED IT. Freddie also sang this song, but of course it had a different meaning to him than what it had with Brian. when Brian sang it, it was about his marriage, and When Freddie sings it, I believe he was relating it to his illness :( Both ways are very powerful.

There's no need to pick a favorite version: Brian's or Freddie's (Queen). Both stand on their own both powerfully and beautifully. They both hurt so much. And no matter who does it the song is imminently relatable. Both versions have a place in my heart, life, and music library. It's also a favorite when I sit down to play the piano. Brian et. al. wrote a singularly gorgeous masterpiece with this song.

Brian wrote a song called "Nothing But Blue" for Freddie after he passed. John Deacon plays the bass on that song. The first time I listened to that song, I had no idea the story behind it but Brian's guitar solo in that song is so emotive that tears just started streaming down my cheeks, not the lyrics, but the guitar just leveled me. This happened the next few times I listened to it then I kind of put it away for a long time. I recently purchased the re-release of Brian's first solo album, Back To The Light and popped it into the CD player in my car. As I was driving, that song came on and I had kind of forgotten about it, it had been years since that album had come out the first time. That guitar solo started up and there I was driving and the degree of emotion in that solo had tears flowing down my cheeks again. I don't know what it is, but his playing on that song moved my soul. My favorite Brian solo song is "Teasin' Around", I think his voice is at it's absolute best on that song. While Brian did not write Teasin' Around, it is the perfect song for his voice. Either of these songs would be a great reaction for your next Brian song.

I love this song!! though it make me cry every time I hear it because I know that the song is Brian's personal struggle in his own life, his choices and the consequences of those choices. He has never entirely healed from those choices and still struggles with depression for them..so I tear up every time I hear this song. The first time I heard it was Brian singing it at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert when Brian was already so heartsick over losing Freddie, so feeling his other struggles at the same time just shattered me.

First marriage in trouble while in love with another woman, Anita Dobson (British Actress & now Brian’s wife). I love Brian’s version when you know the backstory! If you are interested in more Brian, he just re-released his album Back to the Light that has some great songs. You might consider listening to Back to the Light or Resurrection. Freddie also sang this song, but it was and is a Dr Brian May song about his life which gets overlooked, as people hear Freddie and associated it with his life, some still don't reference them as a group of four, it was never Freddie Mercury and Queen, and all the songs apart from their own solo careers during and after Freddie passed away were written individually for their own albums, Freddie wrote for his, Roger Taylor who has a new album out wrote for his and Dr Brian May again has a new, but old album out he's released one from around 30 years ago, the only person who didn't have a solo career was John Deacon, and I feel he's very overlooked, even though he's written some of the biggest songs, including I Want To Break Free, another song associated with Freddie coming out,? It's actually based on the longest running Soap Coronation Street and it's about oppression and the drag was Roger Taylor girlfriend idea, I'm old enough too remember when the group started, so don't associated songs with what we knew about the individuals which made up Queen, I just think like many others from back then, it's great music with a story in the lyrics

@@awordfrompresidentpat1985 OHHH Patrick, DON'T WORRY... The Barcelona era is GREAT!! The Barcelona performances where done around the same time as Freddie's solo "Great Pretender" video.... Even tho he has been diagnosed, he still looks FANTASTIC as always... Just clean shaven.
And YOU. WILL. LOVE seeing the obvious chemistry between Freddie & Montsie... They TRULY ADORED each other!
      💕💕💕💕💕💕
FYI, There are a few video performances of the song "Barcelona"... I think the BEST one is live at La Nit.
ALSO live at La Nit, is their performance of "THE GOLDEN BOY"... my FAVORITE! (Part opera/part Gospel)
      You WILL. FREAKING. LOVE. IT!!💕🖖

On the surface, yes - the song is about being torn between his first wife Chrissy and his lover (now second wife) Anita - but he was also in tremendous strain with Freddie’s illness/death AND the cancer death of his father Harold. All his pain pours out in this.
