I just started my build today. I believe the RAW580 was a smoother build. The 420 was not as smooth as I had hoped with the manual being unclear or even wrong on some parts. (for instance the direction of the insert with the O-ring for the tail boom clamp). But: I'll be finishing up the ESC (HW Platinum v4 60A) and FBL (Mikado VBAR) tomorrow and take it to the field.
Just FYI, the Spektrum FC6250HX was easy to setup and flies nice. I'm not 3D skilled but my buddy is and will check it out further this weekend. Very happy with it so far.
Me too! Lol got the maiden in and the GoPro was angled a little two far and the Heli was at the top of the video pretty much the whole flight! So no useable video lol but! I’ll be getting More flights this weekend!
Channel 2 BEC backup power is the brown/red wire from the ESC with the third yellow wire going to governor? You could also just combine those wires into the one plug and run it in the governor port (according to one of your other videos)? That would leave CH-2 open? Thanks!
yes, you can combine the BEC backup (red/brown wire with the Yellow RPM wire) and plug into the Governor port and leave CH2 or any other open port open.
I know this sounds like a dumb question, however when you wire up the hobby wing to the motor, how do you tell which wire goes to what leading from the esc to the motor? Do you just follow the order that they line up in? Thanks for the help!
No such thing as a dumb question! So it does not matter. Brushless motors are 3 wire so any wire can be plugged in and if the motor spins in reverse then you can simply reverse two of the wires to reverse rotation in the ESC. I personally just match the wires up so it looks better and they flow together and then will go into the ESC with the program box and reverse the direction if need be.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 thank you so much for the help, I was wondering why they weren't colored. My program box should be coming today hopefully haha. Do you have a video showing how the program box works?

Thank you! Welcome back! Helicopter have a come a long way, they fly way better now as well. So yes and no. You don’t need a regular receiver now like you did then. You still need a receiver but now that’s done with a little RX like the SRXL2 or DSMX satellite (if your running spektrum) so for example, if your using a DX8/DX9, NX8/10 or IX12/14/20 you just need a SRXL2 and iKon 2 and you will have full telemetry and everything right to your radio. If you watch the first part of the RAW 420 or any build series I go over everything you need for that build.

For the remote rx do u have to change the pin to a servo lead and go to ch 2 or 3, or can it just be plugged into the side of the ikon were the srxl port is? Also with the cf tail boom kit do u think it would make it lighter or any closer to the rs4 if u are runnig one ? Nice build too ;)
Yes, you need to change the pin on the SRXL2 to a servo plug. Horizon sells a cable already done for the 6250 but works works with the iKon. You plug into CH3 of the iKon as the SRXL2 is a RX and you are SBUS it. The side ports are DSMX ports only for satellites and will not communicate. Unfortunately no, the RAW 420 will always be heavier then the RS4. The carbon boom kit will make it heavier.
They are shims for the tail blades if your model need them. I’ve built some with the shims and some with out. If your tail blades have slop in the grip then use the shims, two on each side.
Have you ever installed a FC6250HX on any SAB Goblin? I have one on a Blade Fusion 480. The servo configuration looks different. Just wondering if the setup would be the same? Thanks!
No I have not. I’ve never set a 6250 up from scratch. Yes the servo lay out is different. As long as you plug the servos into the correct channel and set it up like any other heli.
Spooled up and hovered the 420 today. Running the 6250HX and seems to be fine except the rpm was running at max, I think. Man, it was loud and hit the low voltage cutoff at 3 min. My throttle curve was at 55%. I had copied my Fusion 480 and didn't change the esc from 11:1 to 1:1. Would that do it? The book says poles are 42. How do you program that?
That sounds like a governor issue. Are you running a governor or Flat line throttle curves? Did you calibrate your throttle? Motor is 42 poles but you divide that so 21 poles is what you select.
ESC Gov Store - Flat throttle curves - Transmitter Gov Inh - Tried to calibrate twice but did not get the confirmation beeps? 42/2 = 21 but my transmitter is either 20 or 22?
Thank you. That's what I meant. I set in my tx as well. Did you adjust endpoints in tx to show gyro channel in iKon to show -100/100 before setting gains in tx?
Hey Jeff, isnt it better to use something like the EC5 or IC5-Connectors for this kind of Helis ?I'm asking because if i put an 100A ESC in my Heli an i use the XT60s then they would melt under full oad or not ? I built my first raw 420 now and i personally dont like the easy connectsystem of SAB(Batterie to ESC). Would there be any issues with just solder the Lipo and ESC to EC5 or even XT90 and tightening the cable with a ziptie ? This seems like a more easy and simpler way to set it up.
You will not melt a XT60. I’ve pulled well over 200 amps out then before and no melting. I run a XT60 on my 420 pulling over 100 amps every flight and zero issues. You can use any connector you like but there is no issue with the XT60.
Hello Jeff, I started to build my RAW 420 and I just want to ask, did you have to shorten the motor wires? There is written dimension 80 mm from the edge of the motor to the end of the bullets in the manual. But my wires are longer and when I solder the bullets on they will be longer then the 80 mm written in the manual. Also did you have to shorten the battery wires from ESC? There is also cca 120mm written in the manual. Thank you in advance for your help.

Do you have any videos on blade tracking and how you personally achieve proper blade tracking with a leveled swashplate? If not, could you please direct me to a video of yours or another reliable source?
So if you watch the RAW 420 iKon setup video,I go over blade tracking. If you set 0 degrees of pitch at mid stick and check both blades you will have a perfect blade tracking. That goes for all helicopters no matter the brand size or type.
If XT60 mounting bracket is used, the ring handle of the battery plate interferes with the connector. they should have desgined the ring handle as a part of the battery plate, ie single piece carbon fibre plate.
Would using something like dual lock velcro be acceptable for installing the IKON2? Something like this: 3M RF6741 1" x 4 feet Black Extreme Fastener. I use it for my RC planes and things stay put. Plus, since I might need to get to the back to hook up the USB cable for programming, After some research though, I think it might be easier to just use the optional Sys I/O port since I already have the USB module for that :) The module comes with the IKON2 Micro :)
Personally no I would not use that. Reason being is the double sided tape is a vibration dampener for the iKon. The door lock will be too much of a hardened material will not absorb any vibrations and can cause it to act a little funny. I would recommend using the optional USB port as that’s what I do for mine.

Awesome Jeff! couple questions 1) The 4-5-6 wire from the ikon2 to the PPort is it PPort signal Ikon 5? 2) When programing the ikon2, how did you deal with the 42 poles? I emailed MSH about this a bit ago and their reply was "To divide by 21 just put in the first divisor (Pulses for rotation) the value 7 and then in the second divisor (Main gear ratio) the value 3. 7 X 3 = 21. In the next release (for which we do not have an expected date yet) we will increase the maximum value of the "Pulses for rotation" divisor from 20 to 25 because many people are asking us the same thing and we are giving this same answer a large number of times." Is that what you did?
So yes, Channel 5 from the 4-5-6 port of the Ikon to the P port of the Hobbywing (where the fan plugs in) as far as that part with the Ikon. I have not got an accurate or p.m. reading yet. Do not go to proprietary connector, use the XT60 like the video. The proprietary connector is a nightmare to install into the lipo; plus you have to buy extra connector for charging which is not included. If you use the XT60, they also don't include the connection support for the ESC which is necessary, but also not included - which in my opinion super lame for SAB to do this.

@@westhobbiesrc8051 you’re the best! This is why I’m subscribed to you! Thanks again!
@@azrieltapias9510 thank you! I greatly appreciate it!
Im gonna put a spirit 2 in mine. Hopefully setup wont be too complicated. Are you just using the one spektrum 9747?
I’ve not used a Spirit 2 yet but I shan’t to try one. Yes just one
If XT60 mounting bracket is used, the ring handle of the battery plate interferes with the connector.
they should have desgined the ring handle as a part of the battery plate, ie single piece carbon fibre plate.
Danke!
Thank you very much!
Jeff i just got this model second hand. It has a HW60P Esc and Ikon 2. I have an iX14 Tx. I am using 6S 2600 Gen Ace packs. I am having trouble with idle up and governor speeds. I have the HW programming box. I dont know what i am doing wrong?? When i switch to IU 1 or 2 the rpm's decrease and the tail gets twitchy. In normal it fly's great but head speed is slow. Any suggestions?
Hello! If RPM is decreasing then normally that’s because the throttle is not calibrated. Are you running governor in the ESC or iKON? What is your throttle curves?
@@westhobbiesrc8051 I havnt touched the govenor settings in my Tx. Only in Ikon software. Do you have a video that would walk me through it from scratch? My throttle curve is N 0-60%, IU1 70%, 2 80%
@@mkcoxn2226 you don’t set the governor in your TX. Do you have a Hobbywing Program box? I have a video on the 420 and iKon setup. Have you seen that? I go over setup with the governor in the iKon.
Awesome Jeff! couple questions
1) The 4-5-6 wire from the ikon2 to the PPort is it PPort signal Ikon 5?
2) When programing the ikon2, how did you deal with the 42 poles? I emailed MSH about this a bit ago and their reply was
"To divide by 21 just put in the first divisor (Pulses for rotation) the value 7 and then in the second divisor (Main gear ratio) the value 3.
7 X 3 = 21.
In the next release (for which we do not have an expected date yet) we will increase the maximum value of the "Pulses for rotation" divisor from 20 to 25 because many people are asking us the same thing and we are giving this same answer a large number of times."
Is that what you did?
So yes, Channel 5 from the 4-5-6 port of the Ikon to the P port of the Hobbywing (where the fan plugs in) as far as that part with the Ikon. I have not got an accurate or p.m. reading yet. Just because of that reason lol I am still messing with it so as soon as I figure something out I will be sure to let you know!
@@westhobbiesrc8051Strange, there is nothing in the ESC (HW Platinum pro 80) manual mentioned related to telemetry. Connection to the p-port and the fbl system?
@@carlhaentjens3548 no, nothing in the manual. But hobby wing supports full telemetry! I run them on all my helicopters and get battery voltage, temperature, amperage, MAH consumption, RPM anything you could want.
Can you please share ikon2 setup not sure what to put on gear ratio and motor poles. Thanks
I will be making a video very shortly on iKON set up with the 420.
What throttle curves are you using with the hobbywing 80?
The same I run on all my helis pretty much. Normal- 0-55-55-55-55 Idle 1 70-70-70-70-70 and idle 2 85-85-85-85-85.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 that high with the raw 420?
@@DetoursRC yes, 3200 RPM. That’s 85% throttle.
Where did you get the XT-60 adapter from? I was going to make my own. But if there is one that already made or a 3D printer file I could do that.
thingiverse , it is just a generic XT 60 mount but a guy as since made a RAW 420 XT60 file to print.
www.thingiverse.com/thing:5506451
Jeff, did you put the xt60 holder on thingiverse by any change ?
It’s on there, I didn’t design it. There is one on there for the RAW 420 as well.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 Thanks~! MY build is almost ready :) Im stoked!
@@tbonesixtynine awesome! You will enjoy it!
Do you have a recommendation for a 60a esc for this? I wont be doing hard 3d anytime soon as my progression with rc helis is very slow. Lol
I would highly recommend he Hobbywing 80! Ive pulled over 96 amps, I know you won’t be doing anything crazy but the 60 and 80 are the same size and better to have more then you need.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 gotcha. Thanks
@@westhobbiesrc8051 I got the 80. What mode are you running yours in? Ive never setup a hobbywing esc with the governor so im not sure. put it in regular heli mode and do my normal throttle curves?
@@DetoursRC Yes you’re going to leave the Hobbywing in regular Heli mode and do it all with throttle curves. I’m actually in the process of doing a iKON video set up on the 420! Governor and all!
Jeff, would you share the stl file for the xt 60 ?
It’s not my STL file, I found it on thingivirse
ditch the banana plugs on the motor..use solid ones are better amp and current flow..those have high resistance and not good... always use solid bullets
Never had problem, quality bullet connectors will work great.
how many times are you going to say proprietary connector
As many as needed
I want to build this helicopter!
I highly recommend it! Awesome Heli!
Shop officle website plz😍
Like a build website or Merch?
Do not go to proprietary connector, use the XT60 like the video. The proprietary connector is a nightmare to install into the lipo; plus you have to buy extra connector for charging which is not included. If you use the XT60, they also don't include the connection support for the ESC which is necessary, but also not included - which in my opinion super lame for SAB to do this.
