    Half of the Navy’s littoral combat ship fleet is suffering from structural defects that have led to hull cracks on several vessels, limiting the speed and sea states in which some ships can operate, according to internal records obtained by Navy Times and confirmed by sea service officials. The Navy has not previously disclosed the cracks in the Independence-class version of the LCS or the class-wide repercussions of the defects, nor has it identified which ships suffer from the issues.
    But documents obtained by Navy Times warn that cracks can grow if the ships transits faster than 15 knots in seas with maximum wave heights of about eight feet.

    Be a nice quick trip to the Soo if they put the hammer down and go full out in the open lake - though top speed isn't usually normal cruise speed.

    I thought that we had a treaty with Canada about not stationing active duty warships ( Coast Guard vessels are unarmed. The treaty dates back to 1815. This ship is probably still crewed by the ship yard and is on sea trips which take several months to test and adjust all the systems aboard.

      The treaty is still in place because of historical reasons. As long as the ship is not armed, or has received special permission from the Canadian government than nothing has been broken.

      @@tonyarndt1662 Well it should be noted that the USS MSP came up to Duluth for its commissioning, nothing more. It was not "stationed" there as a permanent assignment, therefore the treaty wasn't broken.

      The four flag hoist is International Code Signal Flags N M S P (for Naval ship Minneapolis Saint Paul). The 2 flag signal hoist on the other side is "Code & Answering Pennant" and H (meaning they have a pilot on board, familiar with local waters) The pilot will get off the ship onto a smaller pilot boat, once the Navy ship is safely outside the channel.

    The Navy wants to get rid of all freedom class ships like this so it will probably get decommissioned in a few years. Turns out they can't do the missions they were built for & are way more expensive to maintain & need more crew to run then promised. These LCS ships have been dubbed the "Little Crappy Ships" because of their mission failures. The lead ship USS Freedom commissioned in 08 has already been decommissioned last year. What you're looking at is a complete waste of taxpayer money.

    • @jonathanellsworth21
      @jonathanellsworth21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      MSP got the fix, the 8 original freedoms launched before 2018 are in trouble, the 6 or so that are being commissioned this year and upcoming got fixed… supposedly. Guess we’ll find out, because they certainly do seem cursed.
      I know there are several articles saying “all freedom class” which is technically true but not at the same time when you really dig into it. This ship is fine to stay and has been in sea trials nearly two years to test the fixes, unless another ship breaking issue crops up!
