    Brings back memories of the time i spent working in Port Colborne in 1957 in more peaceful times seeing the great lake ships. Spent 9 months there now at 90 years old back home in Scotland

      I wish to compliment on your ability to recall the events at this age. Sir I have a question. Do you have any idea as what could be the weight of this ship when empty?

    I grew up in Detroit and lived there from 1956 until 1984. We all loved watching the iron ore ships running up and down the Detroit River.

    I love watching these large ships move. When I was much younger, my family used to spend the summers at Sodus Point NY which, at the time, was the place where coal from Pennsylvania via rail was transferred to coal ships that took it over to Canada. We used to love watching the ships come and go, and listen (and sometimes watch) the loading process.

    that is a sight to see, i live a couple miles from the cape fear river, last year i watched the Hyundai Hope come in fully loaded at 1200 ft long, its something to realize how massive these ships are once you see one. up close, the pilot boats looked like toys.

      On the Great Lakes At 1013.5 feet, Interlake's flagship M/V Paul R. Tregurtha is the longest ship on the Great Lakes. She can carry up to 68,000 gross tons of taconite pellets or 71,000 net tons of coal.

    The difference in handling when I went from my 18' to my new 37' was interesting. Took a bit to get it figured out. The captains of those beasts to me are beyond smart. That isn't just a job, it's an art and they are the Picaso's.

      Indeed captains of ships are amazing, dealing with forces of elements for safety of cargo and lives of crew, dealing with docking/undocking maneuvers involving physics inbuilt with his ship's structure versus momentum, draft and pier features!!!

    • @LibbyRal
      @LibbyRal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Iron ore, limestone are a couple I remember. There is active chat and audio on the live Duluth Canal cam that announces what each ship is hauling or picking up. You can also look back at other compilations of arrivals and departures of the various ships on this Duluth Harbor Cam page, and the descriptions list the load. This time, the Barker is coming to get iron ore pellets, per the description. The live cam chat is a very friendly group, always willing to answer questions and you can learn a lot. And see some gorgeous sunrises.

      It happens. Not by design but it happens, particularly after a bad, multi-day storm, the ships all leave or get to Duluth at the same time after it’s over

    • @alexandersinclair9006
      @alexandersinclair9006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. The freighters have to move enough loads to keep everything running through the winter so they don't have a lot of time for anything else.
