- In March 2006, the USS Gonzalez and the USS Cape St George were conducting a board and search operation on a suspicious vessel in the Indian Ocean. As two American boarding teams approached the craft, small arms fire began to be received from pirates stationed on the vessel, forcing the boarding teams to disengage and return to the safety of the warships; however, the unexpected then happened, as the pirates switched their fire onto the two warships themselves, marking the first time in the 21st Century that a US Navy ship had come under fire from an enemy vessel.

For everyone wondering: the 12 Pirates were exchanged for hostages of a freight ship that went missing in January the same year. i had to quite dig deep for that one. But of course this happened behind closed doors and was covered up quite nicely.
Officially the USA does not make deals with terrorists and pirates. but behind the scenes... well, if innocents can get back to their loved ones, its worth in my book.

When I was in the US Navy in the mid'80s, we were attacked by three small craft off of Beirut in the early morning. They had slipped by our escort vessels and were within a few thousand yards. With our 5" guns and short-range missiles, all three were destroyed. One of the scarier hours I spent while serving.
Why not just kill all of them ?

The real insanity isn't the pirates attacking two destroyers, it's the fact that the pirates were returned to their home country after being well-fed and cared for no doubt.

The U.S. ships were probably thankful. To them it was like a live action training drill.
Kinda makes you wonder what we are doing with are Navy there if they can't enforce the law of the sea on one of the most clean cut cases of pirates... Only case I can think of that is more clean cut is when the Pirates went to raid a war ship... I think that was a Dutch Friget...

Just for clarification, the destroyers could have used their main guns in a direct line of fire. However they were in what at the time they considered "minimum engagement zone" because they didn't want to risk having the explosion rain shrapnel down on the US ships.
basically even a-fraction of their full power was more a danger to themselves than the pirates full power lol

My father was on Gonzalez when this happened and our family is still good friends with the Commander. I remember him telling this story when I was young but I forgot most the details. Wonder how many memories this video could spark...

My brother was in the navy and they faced a similar situation with pirates. When the pirates tried to surrender, they kept shooting, ensuring there were no survivors.

Eric, if you Digital deep you will find all 12 were exchanged for crew members of ships hijacked previously that year.
This is why it has happened on a neutral, non combatant ship (I believe a Dutch ship).
However you won't find any official info as US navy or government will not make any deals (officially) with any pirates.
Read between the lines and you got the answer why.

It is still mind boggling to me how many pirates are operating on the open seas to this day. The US Navy and many other countries navies conduct VBSS operations dealing with pirates at least once a week. The amount of times small arms are shot towards the RHIBs is ridiculous. Nothing some 25mm can't handle from the big ships though.

As a sonar tech aboard a destroyer, I was the gunner of a .50 cal. team, while on station in the Persian Gulf. Saw plenty of stupid acts against our ship, as this is when Iraq was a friendly and Iran was an enemy. Mines in the gulf didn’t help either.

Just think, if the two US ships had been of WWII vintage the amount of fire power that could have brought to bare would have been far more than these modern ships. With the number of AAA gun mounts from .50 to 40mm there wouldn't have been 12 pirates to pick up.

Light Cruisers and above would have been decimating.
The Cleveland-class has 12 6" guns, a few 5" turrets and many AA guns. it would have been devasting.
A Fletcher class destroyer might have been able to bring numerically more light caliber weapons to bear but a single Arleigh Burke or even a cold war era guided missile destroyer like a Charles Adams class, my dad was the skipper of the Henry B.Wilson and it's sister ship The Cochrane was his flagship as Comdesron25, could single handily sink an entire WW2 era Carrier task force.

Probably legal reasons. If they capture them, they'll be held responsible for them, and due to the fact these are probably stateless people, or are deemed to be as such by there own country who don't want these persons, the US would be obliged by international treaties to take them to the US. And because there are no extraditing treaties with most of these countries, the US would be stuck with them. So it would be a free ticket for the pirates to the US, whether this is to prison or otherwise.
I am very mad they let them go also. But it it because the stupid worthless POS Navy is full of pussies that don't know how to do there jobs.

There should be military courts on these vessels and pirates should be made to walk the plank.

What’s funny to me about this, they play it off as if the Navy ships didn’t have time to get the systems up or something, bull! I can guarantee that there were gunners mates that had the 5 inch guns trained and begging for permission to fire. One 5” round would pretty much obliterate the dhow.

MarDet used to toss 55gal drums in the ocean while underway and during maneuvers, to utilize as targets for mounted and unmounted medium and small arms. Even a small boat is much larger than a 55gal drumb. Sadly, we no longer eliminate threats, we treat them as victims, provide them with compensation, and send them on their way.

Personally I don't think they should have stopped firing when the pirate's threw up their hands.
This isn't the 18th century. If you surrender in an armed conflict, you should be treated as a prisoner of war or in the pirates case tried in a court. Not killed on the spot. We should strive to better than our enemies not stoop to their level.

Nothing surprises me. The world is nuts. I cannot imagine what the pirates were thinking when attaching a warship with the size and power of those vessels.
But do the pirates many u educated teen gang members know the difference in ships they see through drug addled minds? They want money or hostages, that's why they make a living boarding commercial boats, holding the sailors and cargo hostage. Companies paid the Ransoms. Now tne warships patrol, and to the desperate and mindxsktered you just climb aboard threaten and take hostage....not sure when they realize this isnt a load of canned goods!

The fact that they were not prosecuted and sent back home is astonishing, for a moment I thought the seas were that little but safer, but nope back to business as usual.

last group of pirates attacked a Spanish navy resupply ship, at least it kind of looked like a cargo ship in their defense. these guys saw that and said "we can beat that" and went for a destroyer...

Unbelievable! Pirates attack two U.S. Navy ships, one pirate is killed and twelve captured, wounds attended to, probably given food and water, just to be given a free ride back to their home country and not charged for their crime. This sends a message to other pirates that there's no penalty if you attack a U S. Navy ship, survive and are captured. I don't understand this decision at all.
It's the new leftist doctrine to combat racism... no crime or charges to walk into a store and steal $900. No jail-bail for 2nd degree murder!

Not prosecuting them at least and sending them back to their country just tells the rest that nothing will be done to them as pirates/terrorists; but let pirate bodies wash up on shore will send the appropriate message.

Having served in the US Navy, I know what sort of weapons our ships have (quite deadly ones), how many (a whole lot), and the chance of surviving them in a no-holds-barred conflict (none), reading the title was enough to get a rough idea of how effective that pirate attack was - as in it wasn't. The US Navy is by far the best-trained, best-equipped, and deadliest force to ever sail the seas of this planet, and the idea anyone has a prayer of doing more than annoying us is laughably absurd. I also knew before reading this we are not bullies, and if possible we would react with the minimal force required to neutralize the threat at hand without reducing that threat to atoms (which is well within our means). The moral of the story: don't be an idiot and attack us... or you may find out why these small ships are called destroyers.
I just hope and pray that the US Navy will do as well against the communist Chinese when they invade Taiwan. Taiwan has the most advanced microchip manufacturing capabilities in the world and we cannot allow them to fall into the hands of a brutal communist regime such as the CCP.
