Doctor Who very cleverly addressed this issue decades and decades ago. The TARDIS has translation abilities, and The Doctor is himself telepathic, as are all Time Lords. In one of the Tom Baker era episodes, the Fourth Doctor's companion suddenly realizes she is understanding medieval Italian, and The Doctor explains it is a "Time Lord gift" that anyone travelling with him in the TARDIS is allowed to "share".

In some episodes ,the Universal Translator didn't work for some reason or other and they comunicated through signs and symbols. However, to make it easy for the not so bright audience, they all speak English except when the Universal Translator doesn't work ,on purpose. 😅

Tell me you never watched Star Trek without telling me. This was addressed in Star Trek. Which is why they introduced the universal translator. And was really defined in Star Trek Enterprise while Hoshi Sato helped create the first stages of programing for it. In fact there were several instances where she struggled to understand their language.
I'm very aware of the translator haha. But there are also numerous instances where the crew spends the entire episode trying to communicate with different life, though not always with language as we know it. I don't think it's unfathomable that they'd run into a species that they can't translate right away. Also, it's a silly meme video. It ended on a fart joke. It's not that deep!
Even Douglas Adams thought the universal translator was ridiculously quick and accurate and took the piss out of it with his "Babel fish" in Hitchhikers ...

Ah yes series 1 episode 13 of TNG where the enterprise encountered a strange annoying plantoid race that gave Troi such a headache when trying to communicate with them, so Riker refused to let these weird sentient plants harm his future wife, beaming the entire away team back to the enterprise. i think this episode as called "The Mercy of Fire" or something like that as by the end of the episode Picard ordered Worf to unload every torpedo onboard the enterprise into the surface of the planet so one would ever have to put up with these annoying creatures XD might also have been a cut content that was the sad tale of how netasha yar died that had the villan the skin of armus in it a part the director felt was too cringe to show on tv lol
I think you mean if Star Trek was either a show about linguistics, or endlessly subtitled? This is a very old SF trope, regardless of what language the stories are written in. Sometimes they come up with a fix--universal translator devices--the Babel Fish in Hitchhiker's Guide--translator microbes in Farscape--some kind of Galactic lingua franca. Or don't even bother to explain why everybody can understand everybody else, unless there's a story-related reason for that not to happen. We literally now have phone apps that can translate just about any language almost automatically. That would have seemed like science fiction when I was a kid.
Of course, there's so much in Star Trek (and other science fiction stories) that's not "realistic". It's a show about humanity at its core, and they take artistic liberty all the time in order to create a thoughtful and compelling story. But that doesn't mean we can't poke a bit of fun, no? My silly little short was really not meant to be that deep!

I'd say the UT is a good try but is worse than teleporter at being just impossible. the best sci-fi reason for a universal language is the whole ancient dead empire thing. so a super empire ruled the entire galaxy and enforced a galactic common "star wars" this makes the most sense and their is still language barriers for people who don't speak common. the parralel is English on earth air travel uses english and its the most spoken language in the world and no i don't count mandarin cause that is cheating

In enterprise, they show how the translator is both developed and fine tuned. I don't remember if they ever figured how to talk to apians.

A few of the books make it very clear that in Star Trek they don't speak English. They speak Federation standard Which derived from Esperanto.
If there comes a new Star Trek movie or series, I would strongly like if it was filmed in Federation/Esperanto language with English subtitles.
