Great video! It wasn’t the apes that Taylor was cursing in the end, though. It was mankind. YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP!

Brilliant, the statue of liberty movie ending was one of the best in all the history of movies. I would LOVE to go there….its funny that I lived in LA in the 80’s and have been to Zuma beach a couple of times but never knew that POTA filming went on there. Living in LA you see lots of filming taking place. A john Travolta/Brice Willis movie had scenes filing just around the corner form where I worked. Once I came across a street loaded with Christmas decorations in the middle of July? Yep I think it was for a Hulk Hogan Movie. Another time traffic on a freeway suddenly slowed to a crawl. Looking into the desert to see what the hold up was, there was a film crew shooting a movie scene around a very realistic spacecraft. We all looked on in awe while the cops were trying to get us all moving. Keep up the great work Dan, just loved this! How cool is that!

At the end Taylor was cursing humans for blowing it all up. I can still remember doing "Duck & Cover" drills in the early 70s. In the late 70's there were still fragments of the Ape City. & MASH was filling at the time. We would hike through the park & enjoy the sets. Also at that time there was a large water tank for filming boat sequences from earlier years. At this time we lived in Agoura Hills Ca. & would get the occasional pleasure of hearing & then seeing F4U Corsair & Zeros flying to be filmed for the series "Baa Baa Black Sheep!"

My Dad and I visited Malibu Creek State Park when it first opened in the mid to late 1970's. "MASH" was still being filmed. Lots of sets were still in place. I saw a small piece of the POTA space ship, there was a full size top portion of a submarine made of foam and plywood. All the little huts from the POTA TV series. Ape City and related structures. Lots of buildings seen in "MASH". The Temple/School that was used at the end of the "Sand Pebbles" and I'm pretty sure it was also used in "Kung Fu". I haven't been for a number of years, but sometimes you can still spot little corn stalks around the lake.
The main beach you were on was Westward Beach, south of Zuma Beach. At one time it was referred to as Free Zuma because you could park along the road for free. When you crossed over the rocks for the cave area, you were in Pirate's Cove. In the 70's through the 90's, it was a nude beach. When Taylor was cursing at the end, he was cursing the Humans for blowing up the planet.

Great episode! I took my parents on this hike through Malibu Creek State Park last year, mainly to see the M*A*S*H site, but also the Ape City location. I watched Planet of the Apes (1968) with my father when I was a kid, so this was a very cool full-circle moment. Being able to see so many filming locations in person just hits differently. I was again struck by how small the Ape City location felt, relative to what ends up on screen. That's movie magic.
(Off-topic, but I believe that they should build a more-or-less full recreation of the M*A*S*H set. I've heard all the wildfire concerns, maintenance issues, access, etc., but that site is begging for a more comprehensive, immersive experience.)

Complete side comment: as a kid in the 80s, I loved those (then new) Corn Nuts, and one time they had a thing where they'd throw sample seeds to "grow your own corn nut plant", with a couple live seeds inside a pack not unlike the toy surprise in Cracker Jack boxes. Anyway, I planted it in the corner of my folk's garden and that sucker grew FAST!!! It seemed like just a few days and it was taller than me! So, yes, I can vouch for how fast those corn stalks can actually grow in a field like that. Sorry if this isn't exactly terribly relevant, but hey. Nerds gotta nerd.😂

While relating the details of his trip and his visit to the Lincoln Memorial, he said, "..and I was standing right where Klaatu was standing in "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I laughed out load because that was exactly the thought that ran through my brain when I had visited the The Lincoln Memorial a few years earlier while on a business trip, notwithstanding all of the real history associated with it. And like Ape City the tents were actually extremely close together. Angles people it's all angles. And as for the Halloween stuff in Pasadena (where I live) the "original" house was moved to it's current location. Yes Haddonfield is South Pasadena. And if you were to go up to Orange Grove Avenue near the buildings that serve the Rose Parade, you'd find Doc. Browns house from Back to the Future. it's funny, it wasn't that long ago that i watched your videos and you had 12K subscribers or something like that. normally i wouldn't really pay much attention to that low of a sub count because, well, there's usually a good reason why they don't have more. but, i was like, man, this guy should have more subs, and i think i even commented that i hoped the algorithm gawds bestowed their grace on you and put you on some recommendation lists. now look at ya, you've got 123K and sponsors, lol.
good job, and i'm glad the work you put into it is paying off. your biggest draw, imo, is the fact that you're legit into this from a young age and have the photos to prove it. you find a lot of information that's either hard to find or practically insider knowledge, and that adds so much to the quality.

Oh man, so glad you were able to make the trip! Being a Californian, you sometimes take for granted certain things like this. Yep, there are so many more things to see, and I'm sure you'll gather tons more material for future videos. I'll be watching. 😉

I've been to California a couple times but didn't get around to checking out any Apes locations, will have to try and check them out if I get back there. I did manage to check out some locations though place I went was Vazquez Rocks, many movies and TV shows have been filmed there with the Star Trek episode Arena being one the best known shows filmed there. Stopped at the Happy Days house as well as the Brady Bunch place. Getting to stop at the fire station that was used in the show Emergency was a highlight for me, still in operation and looks mostly the same. One of the cooler things about is you can take tours

Those locations were great, and it's funny how much I took them for granted having lived in SoCal as a kid. I literally lived across the roadway from Vasquez Rocks (where Kirk fought the Gorn and countless other scifi location shots). I don't live down there anymore, so this was like a trip back home. Thanks. 👍

Would you believe my 7 year old son has seen all the Planet of the Apes films (both original and modern ones) plus the entire TV series. He is just fascinated with the theme/topic and I’m happy I got to share and bond with him over this amazing franchise I grew up watching as a kid around his age. Thank you for taking us along this dream bucket of yours and ours into reality. New subscriber here. Going over now your great content.

Great video. Pieces of the Ape City sets can still be found today (both the arena concrete with chicken wire on the back and the spray foam) after heavy rains. The heavy brush there now makes it challenging to discover.
There are great photos of the actors in full makeup seated in station wagons and other vehicles driving on the 405 FWY on their way to Fox Ranch from the 20th Century Fox Studio Lot in 1967. Imagine what the other drivers thought.
I was in an episode of a TV series shot at the old Fox Ranch in 1977 as a child and remember seeing the remains of Ape City still standing there - amazing to see as a kid!
    Again, great video!

Hey Dan, that was a great location tour. I'm glad you guys got to do that and share it with all of us. A real piece of movie history. Also glad you had a good time at ComicCon. Since it was your first time in the southwest, maybe AZ will be next on your list for famous locations.

One of my favorite videos yet Dan ! And that is hard to say seeing how much I have enjoyed the others on your Chanel. I can relate to paling around with your brother going on adventures like this and reliving things from our childhood . We ventured to the Famous Monsters festival last month to see Ultraman and the Gorn from Star Trek . A trip only two crazy brothers in their sixties , who grew up with this stuff would appreciate. Glad you had a good time on this shoot , the fun and joy really shows.

WOW, what a great experience you had. This video was actually a touch emotional for me. I remember seeing this movie in the theatre when it came out with my older sister. I was only six years old. Of all the things that can fade with time, this I remember. One of the things that stood out though was the sound track. The music was eerie and moody and tense. In my opinion the original Planet of the Apes is the best of the series. Seeing it for the first time as an adult years later it still holds up. Back then the movie rating system wasn't established and I saw any number of movies I was a little young for, but that my friend is a subject for another comment.
