I dont think the heads are failing. I think you erased the servo tracks with your giant electromagnet. The servo tracks are what the drive uses to initialize the hard drive, and test its seek function. That is what you hear when the drive is completing the seektest. If this data is missing, the drive will click forever. It sounds to me like the servo tracks are damaged but still in tact, because the clicking isn't constant. It attempts to read them, but ultimately doesn't.

Could you make one that is small. Can you make a magnet as small as possible with some lightweight battery to empower it

Did you apply the 24vdc to the primary 120vac ? The DC resistance of the secondary HV coil would be too high for 24 VDC to give ant strength?

    definitely interesting

I'll report you to the police: you're an hard drive killer ;)
Good job and using a full night of secure erase, plus filling the HD with tons of random noise using dd if=/dev/urandom of=random.dat bs=size in byte of the HD count=1 then once done, breaking the platters with a hammer will do the trick.

Just posted somewhere else that external magnets shouldn't erase a HDD. Looks like I'm right. Never thought of using an external magnet to impede the head from moving. Looks like you might have caused the head control circuitry to overload. I would have thought they'd have had current limiting to save the silicon from failing. Maybe you're magnet induced a nasty EMF in the coil and that took the TI chip out. Might explain why your ATA to USB clapped out too. Good work.

@@F45050 yep that's how HDDs are built now

Need better testing, I applied 3 magnets to a external HD for more than 10 hours and it powers up, it spins just fine, windows recognises the HD plugged in but it cannot be seen anywhere. Whatever the magnets did, the HD can't be accessed.

    A lot of "testing" and the outcome . . . . . . . . . a lot of assuming! Wahahahahaaaaaa!

    Indeed, I enjoyed that crap.

You mustn't be given electronics hardware.

YOU CAN ALSO USE DBAN UP TO 33 TIMES
OR CIPHER /W:C/ IN WINDOWS UP TO 3 TIMES
    OR MELT IT DOWN .
SHRED IN LINUX UP TO 99 TIMES
