    Interesting video. One thing you can do that would make things easier, is to use positive pressure, instead of negative pressure. When you do this, you don't need to be as concerned about sealing all the edges so much. Using positive pressure, guarantees that you don't suck dusty air in from anywhere, the only air going into the box is through the filter, any openings would serve to exhaust the air. You still want to minimize any openings, so you maintain positive pressure, but you can be more relaxed about it. With this construction, a simple PC case fan could be used as to provide the pressure.

      How would you go about implementing such change?
      Would you replace the vacuum with a fan blowing air in, or is it something else?
      (Sorry to bother you, ik it has been a while since you posted this comment)

      @davidswanson5669 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@orsaz924if he never replies, then I’ll add my opinion. You’d have to close up the portion where the vacuum hole is (seal it off, since we aren’t using a vacuum anymore). Then over on the filter side, you’d have to shrink the inlet so that a computer fan fits snuggly in it (you don’t want air getting past it, otherwise you won’t be able to create positive pressure). Then the size of the actual filter is probably overkill, but just keep it anyway. The OP mentions that the enclosure doesn’t need to have perfect seals, and he’s right - however, the part where the filter is attached to the fan/enclosure, needs to be airtight. Otherwise you’re drawing in air that is unfiltered.

    I love the concept, and it's a great place to improve upon. Points to consider vacuum cleaners normally throw up a huge amount of dust . The gloved seals would have to be absolutely airtight as they would provide least resistance to airflow coming in . Car board itself is a fibrous material which sheds particles something made out of plastic tub would be better . A round respirator filter would truly stop all fine particles as these are certified. Although it's hard to push air through a filter you would only need slight positve pressure, to achieve your aim. I like the way you explained everything and filmed it

    Well done mate, its wonderfully DIY and needed in these days of tech. I am one of those who have been ripped off by clean room repair companies (escalating charges, holding to ransom, we have dismantled it and it will be trash unless you pay etc). I could have done some of these myself with a little learning and practice. I know you cant attempt everything, but this is a very clear way forward for people who re stuck so worthwhile work.

    This would be great for putting screen covers on phones and tablets which is almost impossible to put on without a speck of dust under the cover.

    • @FUG_GOOGL
      @FUG_GOOGL 10 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Here's how I did it : Went into the bathroom and turned on hot water from the shower head. This creates steam which 'catches' the dust particles and then drops them to the ground.
      After a couple minutes the (small) bathroom was free of dust in the air so I could put the screen protector on without a single particle on my screen :)
      It does create a damp environment so may not be ideal to work on a HDD :p
      Also, it doesn't stay free of dust forever obviously so you have to work somewhat fast.

      I agree, also, not sure if you have ever done it, but I've had a lot of success with applying a screen cover the same way they do it with tints on car windows: spray water on the sticky side. I know it sounds odd, but if you've ever gotten a cover from Zagg, they give you a small spritz bottle with water. All you have to do is wet the under side, so when you apply it, you can slide it around in place, and get a stiff card like a library card and squeegee all the water out from underneath. You'll have a few little "frosty" parts, but these disappear within a few days. Give it a try if you'd like, I've had amazing results this way, and the pushed out water could also potentially slide out some specks of dust from underneath as well.

    I have not read all the other comments at this time but would suggest you push air into the unit though a filter rather than suck air out. This would solve a couple of issues with the unit wanting to collapse, you also don't need to make it air tight and lastly you don't need as much air flow. Yes you would need to leave what ever you are using to pressurise the container running but it would also make 100% dust free. Secondly you could just leave the whole glove on and not cut it to sleaves and each time use a fresh set of gloves and just fold the wrist part over a PCV pipe

    just a little word for those out there considering rescuing their data themselves. If you plan to swap the head stack make sure none of the heads touches each other specially the donor head, you have to insert a plastic in between each head but not physically touching the heads, I'd the heads do fully touches each other you WILL get a 100% guaranteed click of death, no data will be recoverable, you will need to obtain another donor drive to get another set of head stack just to retry again ($$) and don't touch the platter discs with your bare hands, doing so will destroy or make unreadable the sectors there, another situation that causes sectors to become unreadable is by causing a head crash (when the head are somewhere in the middle of the platter whether you caused this off not, you can rectify this by turning the platters with your hands while at the same time you gently return the heads back to the park position whether that happens to be in the inner platter section or outter platter section (subject to different models) and one again you can consider the sector where the head crash occured unreadable but you should be able to continue just fine just procure not to commit more mistakes. So not attempt to swap multi player drives your self unless you have data you don't care to lose, if those multi platters neediness misaligned you will lose your data and no one will be able to help you and special equipment and the patience of God would be required to properly align those platters again, one good method that you can use to swap multi platters is by using the "duct tape method" (go Google it or search for that video) but if those duct tape or that cheap duct tape you decided to use fails to hold up, say bye bye to your data and if those platters fell to the floor and you lost track on their orientation, which one goes first or if a disk is upside up or not you have made the problem much worse than a simple misalighment and i really doubt anyone or any company on this planet can help you at this point. lastly ground yourself or at the very minimum touch a grounded object to discharge what ever electro static electricity you may have before starting work.

    Earned a like, like most your videos =)
    A suggestion for future project, or just out of interest:
    An alternative design would be to make a laminar flow environment, with flow from table-->up.
    This is what is often used in microbiology work with petri-dishes. Laminar flow=no(low) turbulence, and the airflow from the table to the top of containment.
    As air moves down->up it does not move over the subject, and prevents any particles from settling on the subject.

    I know it is an older video DIY Perks, but this is something I am getting ready to build. I think I will use slightly different materials. I think I am going to use acrylic board or plexiglass for it, and aluminum window frame material to make it a little heavier duty, but this video shows me that it is possible to make a fairly clean room for data recovery and other issues that may need a cleaner environment. I think I will mount a small switch inside the enclosure for lights and for the fan/vacuum.

    Not sure using a vacuum for air movement is the best idea since it will pull dust into the enclosure if the seal around your arms is broken. Better to have air blown in with a HEPA filter attached to the inlet. Then a couple outlets covered by a breathable material. This will allow for positive pressure in the enclosure, making it impossible for dust to get in.

    wouldn't positive pressure be better? forcing out impurities, and cleaning the air on it's way in? that's how the high security labs do their clean rooms.
    could also use some window screen over the vacuum hose to allow you to keep the vacuum on without worrying about parts disappearing into it's depths.
    i mean, this way is certainly much cheaper, but likely not as 'sterile'.

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Theoretically positive pressure might be better, but I've never seen a vacuum cleaner with a 'blow' function, so I'm not sure how you'd go about it using household items.
      Ah, just thought of one after I finished that sentence... a hairdryer. Might be worth looking in to, but it might be a bit more complicated to implement.

Posi-pressure would be nice, but most household vacuum hoses are full of all kinds of contaminants....and the vacuum blower components would be less than pristine as well. Practically speaking, the DIY solution is more than adequate as a low cost solution. Cheers!

    • @kienanvella
      @kienanvella 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, that would be why you would filter the air going into the box, but yeah, this is probably good enough for most things.

    Thanks for this inspiring Video!
    Also a very good idea would be to blow dust free air into the box so you have no problems with any leakage. Then you can even put tools in while you're working
    For example using a computer fan with an air filter attached to it to blow air in. Then you can leave the fan turned on all the time you are working. Through small intentional wholes the air could go out all the time.

    I created my own version of this using his basic concept! its a box with a glass window on top and a cutout for a fan that sucks air out of the enclosure. on the opposite side, it has two intake holes that have a filter over them and I have two cutouts for the hands that I plan on putting the gloves through. it works pretty well! its also powered by two 9v batteries.

    Hi
    Try glas cutter and aquarium/terrarium.
    You can use parts of a vacuum cleaner to build the "fan" for the
    aquarium, that pumps the air into it so you have more pressure in the
    container than outside so you don't contaminate the container.
    2 to 3 very good pair of gloves to the holes you cut ...
    Remember to put the filter between the blower and the aquarium
    and always positive pressure in relation to the outside atmosphere
    and meticulously clean the object or tape everything that can contaminate.
    (back of the HD->PCB, screw holes ...

    I would force filtered air (most vacuum have an air outlet to attach the hoose) into the cabinet. In that way perfect seal doesnt matter so much, since pressure inside is "positive", and air wants to escape between the leak it found, but since air is going out, room dust cant get in. this approach Ive seen in a Radio Transmission plant where dust was some sort of serious problem, then, got a BIG BLOWER, taking air from outside, filtering it and forcing it into the room, resulting in every hole of the room blowing air and blocking the dust. cheers.

    Another think you could do is set it up to have positive pressure while working, from a thoroughly filtered source of course. IT would help to prevent dust from entering the enclosure.

    Do you consider a different approach : so called laminar flow chamber built similar but hepa filter is behind a strong fan, mounted on rear wall of the chamber (filter side to inside). Draft of filtered air will exclude incoming dust particles, so no glovebox style interface is required and the chamber can be continiously opened from the front.

    Clever idea and good video, i'll take some of your design idea and use positive pressure with a small fan and HEPA filter cloth; the vacuum seems excessive unless you need a negative pressure environment and would suck dust in through any gaps in the system.

    Ususally clean rooms and clean work boxes are made to have a overpressure. So it is better to force the air through the filter to the clean box with the overpressure by a fan. Overpressure will force the inner air out of the clean box through all holes and will not suck any dusty room air inwards. This is the idea of the clean rooms or clean work boxes.
    Underpressure (vacuumed) work boxes are made to work with toxic chemicals so the air with the toxic fumes is sucked out of the box to some kind of toxic chemical absorption filter or out to the atmosphere.
