The reality is that mammograms and ultrasounds are not enough for women with dense breasts. I am one of these women. While the combination mammogram + ultrasound discovered the cancer in one breast, it was an MRI that caught the aggressive cancer in the other one. I have just finished chemo. Without the MRI, I would have had surgery in one breast, but not the other. I would not have had the chemo treatment. I would not be hoping for recovery. So yes, mammograms and ultrasounds can be useful, but, if you have dense breasts, an MRI is your best shot.

As an unapologetic male feminist, Katie, thanks to Dr. Hillary Marston and you for this conversation about new breast cancer screening recommendation from the FDA. Merci beaucoup!

What if your insurance company doesn't cover the additional tests? What do you do?

Sooooo helpful, thank you! Especially that last point about coverage for additional imaging costs. I'm finding it shocking my MRI/mammos for 3 years post cancer require so much out of pocket. I want to do something about the fact so few can survive a cancer diagnosis in the US without resorting to GoFundMe for time off work for surgery/treatment. Shouldn't there be a better way?

It's difficult to get ultra sounds in illinois as added protection besides mamogram.

At 9:56 you asked the important question of the doctor whether women should get mammograms and ultrasounds as you did, but then you continued talking about insurance so that important question was never directly answered by Dr. Marsden. Very frustrating.

Is an MRI the best choice?
