That's an incredibly good idea! You get the best of both worlds...a clear view of those different types of aerial attachments adhering to the plank, and also the plant rooting into the moss for further propagation ~ love it!

You can use a heavy decorative pot that is a little deeper than the plastic pot. This will help avoid the thing from falling. Hope this helps!

Thank you for that. I have my plants on planks and was really apprehensive with doing the air layering, and as you mentioned the cost of moss poles for me is a no. I'm hoping that I will get to see the results of yours as mine will be not much further behind than yours. I love your channel! My husband made me something similar years ago. But he made a round wooden base with the plank notched and screwed into the base. Then I added my plant pot on the base and attached the vines onto the plank. The weight of the plant on the wooden base kept everything stable

This is such a good idea. If I decide to extend my poles, I'm going to give this a try.
Also, I'm taking bets that one of the companies that makes moss poles & trellises will have a "plank expansion kit" available within the next two years.

GREAT idea!!! Might use a thicker water bottle so it’s sturdier & adds to keeping it stabilized. Maybe try leaving part of the bottle to use as a side flap to staple to the back or side of the board. 🤔🤔🤔
I did think of how I could attach it to the plank. I will have to find something I can staple to the plank
How thick are the air prop containers that you have? Those might work. Put half on the bottom plank & the other half on the top…..then put the brackets over them.

Very cool!! I have treleaf wood trellises that are extendable anddd they already have decorative holes. I'm definitely trying this in a treleaf hole when my plants get close to the top.

Interesting, looking forward to results! I bought a shingling raphidophora on a short plank it quickly outgrew, I had a piece of decorative twisty wood leftover from my lizards enclosure, had hubby put 2 long screws in the bottom so the actual wood sits just above the substrate, and not they’re climbing this cool twisty drift wood piece, I love experimenting and making it my own

You should Never apologize for recycling something! Your mesh could be an onion bag. What if you left the bottle more intact, cut a hole in the "shoulder". stuff it with moss & water occasionally. Would the roots reach in there? Also, what if you used a router to make a channel in the center of the plank? leave it rough. would that encourage the roots to grab on?
I am new to encouraging root growth on plank/pole, but am trying to learn all that I can.
I always try and reuse whatever I can for plants.
I have a friend that will be helping me out with the plank system. He does woodwork as a hobby and is much more knowledgeable and resourceful... He has all the tools lol
Drill a hole then cut out the rest. That's how they make the handles in wood crates.

You could add a picture hanger or loop of some sort to secure the top to the wall or ceiling, even a cup hook. Cool design!

When using screws in thin wood (and pinewood especially) you HAVE to pre-drill. Another method could be using dowels in the connecting bits. If it does not need to be de-mountable you could use wood glue to connect the extension to the base. Dowels and glue would also allow the two planks to be sawn in half later on.
I did pre-drill! I had to use thicker screws because they were the only ones short enough to not poke through. This is definitely not the final product and I hope to incorporate some wood working friends to help me make a 'presentable' final plank

I burn the tip of the plank that will go in the soil and it wont rot then u have 2 in one charcol from the plank and a plank 😊

Very cool design. Still watching the video as I post this comment, so apologies in advance if you ultimately reach this same conclusion and mention it at the end of the video, but…if you want to try it with original design idea of cathedral style joint, a jigsaw might be the right tool to use to cut the section out. Smaller saw blades and more flexible.
Currently I don't have the proper tools but I have a friend that does wood working as a hobby..... So I'm hoping to brainstorm with him about version 2

I have a question: isn't it relatively straightforward to just chop the top portion of a vine and root it in water using the little feet and anchoring aerial roots? Given that pothos root readily in water, why is this not a simple solution to the chop and prop problem? Sure, it adds a week or two to the process but please let me know why this doesn't work? From what I've seen if you have any kind of large aerial roots on a pothos, these root quickly into water.
You can, but then you pause the growth and the plant (depending on the size) could take a number of weeks to grow roots and it would be MONTHS before you see new growth again. This concept (a moss pole hybrid) shouldn't have that same stall in growth as it would with water. Does that make sense???
@@EverythingPlants I understand what you're saying but in my opinion the stall is just a couple of weeks. I suppose if you want to avoid that, then the system you are describing makes sense. I guess I'm just ok with chopping and propping in water. The air layering is certainly interesting but has its own complexities.
I used my son old bed planks that come to hold the matrres to the bed and used them as plant but i burn the tip that goes in the soil so ot wont rot

I’m wondering if you could cut the two ends of the planks to fit like a lock and key and then attach the bracket on the sides instead of the back, then you could just allow the plant to continue growing without any window or need for any moss, like the two end pieces would fit together like a puzzle 🧩 or a lock and key 🔐

What about coco coir? I'm thinking about trying it instead of moss poles. Will my plants get any nutrience out of the coco option? Probably not, right?

Have you tried cardboard tubes? Large tubes from wider materials .. or even paper Towel roles..
I think ur concept is sound but I wonder if ur moss reservoir is large enuff 2 stay wet enuff 2 allow the roots time 2 grow.
