Get the predatory mite mixture of mites. You can keep your plants free of spider mites, thrips and other pests. The mixture is great so you get different types of mites that prefer different types of pests as their favorite meal.
If you have an active infestation get the adult mites and then sachets of eggs that will hatch on a staggered timeframe. Loving these and I use nematodes for fungus gnats. Works like a charm. I wish I had done it sooner instead of wasting SO MUCH $$$ on mosquito bits, peroxide, systemic etc. none of them worked half as well.

@@ChristyD97 I’ve never had mealy bugs so never looked into them. Check natures good guys their website will tell you what predators work for every pest. I’m sure they have something. I have an extensive booklet they send with orders. If I find it tonight I’ll post what works

@@rhodealexandre6583 I’ve purchased from natures good guys and……. I forget the other business it begins with K. Just search predatory mites for sale. I wasn’t sure at first how I’d feel about them. After you release them it’s rare to ever see them again. They hide in the plants and come out at night. I started out with nematodes “predatory wormies”first and was absolutely amazed how much better they worked than all the other “remedies” I tried.

Thrips seem especially bad this year.
So far, since the spring, I’ve lost a 30 yr old Ponytail Palm, 5 assorted vining philodendrons, and a few other miscellaneous plants.
I’m trying to keep a couple vines in water only, to end the thrips growth cycle , spraying plants down with water, and have tried various insecticides. (Including Capt Jacks bug brew…☹️)
Right now, I’m using a mixture of water and diatomaceous earth that I spray on….once it dries it seems to be working, but the leaves all look blotchy from the DE…..
    What a way to live!
In all my years as a plant mom, I can’t remember this kind of struggle, and I see lots of people on social media with the same issues….☹️
I can relate to your frustration, it’s very sad to feel like you’re in a losing battle with these little varmints.
It’s very sad to lose a beloved plant too!
I hope you are successful in beating those thrips!

I’ve battled with thrips for at least two-three years now. I went from 130 houseplants down to 40 in a relatively short period of time. Integrated pest management seems to be the only approach that’s helping. It can get pricey, but compared to what I have invested in my plants, it seems to be worth it. It looks like you might also have echinothrips (aka impatiens thrips) in which case green lacewing larvae and swirski mites are the way to go. The lacewings target adult thrips while the mites target the egg, larval, and pupal stages.

I've never seen a thrip on my leafy houseplants here in London ~ I sometimes get an outbreak of scale insect or dreaded root-munching mealy bugs (mainly on succulents/cacti). Although you achieve a tropical microclimate for your amazing plant collection, are thrips a particular pest endemic to the dry Canadian Plains? The issue with your P. Brasil maybe be the congestion of leaves bunching on the shelf (it provides too much of a happy enclosure for thrips). It may not be a logistical possibility, but I wondered if suspending the P. Brasil in a hanging basket from the ceiling may provide more beneficial air circulation through foliage? Also, I wonder if there are pheromone traps available? Keep soldiering on Jeff! ~ just love how you steadily expand your collection, and develop your plant-care techniques :)

Jeff I really hope that your Brazil is doing fine in the meantime!
The other day I noticed some larvae and two adult thrips on my Brazil. I immediately sprayed it with a systemic insecticide and cut off the damaged leaves. The problem I can't isolate the plant since I don't have much space.... so I sprayed all the neighboring plants as well (I found a thrips on my neon pothos that was nearby).

Maybe it’s philodendrons in general?..I have a neon or lime green one that seems to be going downhill quickly. I’ve been trying to get systemic granules but can’t get it delivered to my address here in the states either. I have scale on a variegated schleffera and I refuse to give up the fight so I’m spraying and picking them off. I should just toss it but I’m determined and I guess a little crazy.
