I love pink princess’s. Even when they revert, I love the look of the reverted plant. They are so much fun to experiment with. I propagate the fck out of my pink princess. Oh and they sprout babies all the time. You’ll see a tiny little baby at the base of the plant one day. It’s fun.

I think it's wishful deniability hoping that it's not that big, persistent, laborious and time intensive of an issue to have to deal with. I see it all the time with other people's plant or body problems. (I'm in the medical feild. I hear " it's not a heart attack, it can't be! I take vitamins and eat kale!" Like all the time!) But we gotta give the newbies some credit for reaching out and trying to understand because of their interest in the hobby. I remember 23yrs ago when I got into the hobby how elitist and non inclusive the hobby used to kinda feel and the internet was really not a ton of help in the day.

to new plant people, my top recommendation is always practicing patience by taking time to really understand your recently purchased plants before buying any new ones.
quarantining, preliminarily pest-treating, and getting a handle on watering needs to make sure your plant isn’t declining within the first couple weeks of bringing it home will save you _so much_ hassle and stress in the long run.

  • @AntoninJezek
    @AntoninJezek 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Learning about systemics was a game changer. As long as your plant isn't outside, it shouldn't be a problem, and it takes care of most pest problems.

I had a fungus gnat investation, I used Dunks Bits. I bought pantyhose tied the correct amount on the bag, tied off the leg I had cut off with the bits in it and soaked in the watering can for the prescribed time, then watered my plants. The ingredient kills the larvae in the soil and it cleared up quickly. A water meter also helped me greatly with watering.

    Fantastic video advice!
My two cents for the suggestion pool is to keep a box of Nitrile gloves when you have toxic plants.
In my "growing pains" haha I bought some Alocasia Borneo Giant trunk chunks and they later developed rot. In my panic and trying to clean the rot from one of the trunks, I started feeling sick. Thankfully it didn't get too bad but I definitely make sure to wear them now when handling stuff like that. When I have forgotten, it just takes the scent of an angry Alocasia to quickly remind me. 😂
Reassurance I have for someone just starting out is that it takes time to figure out what soil (or soilless) and amendments works for you and your environment.
Give yourself grace and don't give up when the failures happen. The successes will come. The plant community is awesome and the people generally are more than willing to help.

Glad to report I knew/do the vast majority of these! Makes me feel better, I try so hard😭. My fussing has both saved and killed plants oops. I usually catch problems like pests very early and before they can get out of hand, but just the other week I noticed a small adansonii of mine wasn't doing well so I moved it around a bunch to find a better spot for it and repotted it, and it's sadly still deteriorating. Leaving it completely alone for now to see what happens! If worse comes to worst I'll chop and prop. The funny thing was that I remembered you saying something akin to this in other videos as it wasn't getting better and I had a moment of "Wait... I'm not helping, am I?" lol

Thanks for all of the info. I’m still new to houseplants, and making my fair share of mistakes. It’s unfortunate that I live about 100 yards from a Home Depot, because it means I have to resist the urge to constantly buy new plants. However, I’ve been making lots of mistakes with pothos cuttings, though, and I have to say, if I’m going to mess up cuttings, that’s the one to learn from. It’s a beautiful plant, but low cost and still has enough vines growing for me to chop and make mistakes on. I’m planning to learn enough from my pothos that I can risk experiments on other plants. (I have multiple other plants growing, but I’m not cutting them until I have more experience.)

I live in a relatively warm Mediterranean climate (which is good for exotic plants and unfortunately their pests as well...). My plants grow outside year-round although I dedicate protected areas based on the plant's needs. The plants comprise fruit trees, tropicals (mostly aroids) under the trees to fill the gaps, Hoyas and succulents. Few years ago, my Haworthias fell victims to scales which have reduced my collection from more than 50 Haworthias to just four. They were immuned to pesticides and starting over from cleaned cuttings did not help at all. That is how I switched to the tropical plants. However, after much observation, I noticed that cuttings I planted in small pots with mineral-based medium (no peat if possible), exposed to some direct sunlight grew tougher and that even allowed me to expand my collection once again. My Haworthia collection is growing and only the weakest plants don't make it. Now my garden features the Haworthias in the best lit areas along with my tropicals, fruit trees and all others.

Oddly enough, the only pests Ive had issues with are spider mites, and even those are very rare for me, I quickly remove thrm by giving the plant a nice shower. Ive never had mealy bugs, scale, etc, nor do I ever quaranteen my plants. I dont really know why, especially given how long Ive been gardening, but Im guessing maybe a mix of giving them showers and having a copious amount of spiders around seems to keep any other pest at bay for me luckily.

I had just turned on a random video from another channel before turning on your video and rolled my eyes when the author literally started panicking at the sight of a new alocasia and a price tag that "isn't that high" - the first thing that came to mind was exactly what you were talking about - in six months/year that plant will be available in any garden shop at a ridiculous price. The price of neither was low, and to my mind Etsy is one of the more expensive places when it comes to buying plants. And I thought to myself that sharing my hobby of growing ornamental plants is in some cases starting to resemble a 'who's first' race to have the new most expensive variety, with which you could buy, say, a new washing machine.
And I'm a newbie in plants community and thank god I jumped off early enough from that hype train - thanks to massive escalation of thrips - they attacked all of my plants (I have quite a small department) and this summer I spend almost every evening cleaning every plant and throw a lot of them, because there was nothing to save. Growing plants is a time and attention consuming hobby that nobody shows on the internet and it's something every new person should know😉

You want a singular light? If you tell me a bit more about what you are growing and how I can be more accurate. If you are on a serious budget regular barrina shop lights work just fine. Don't get too caught up in 'full spectrum' lights because they charge a premium for it. I've grown plants for years under barrinas regular shop lights and they are much cheaper. Also what's more important is the wattage and overall strength of the grow lights.

I lightly dust the hole I'm putting the plant in with rooting hormone, very lightly. Then easily put soil over the plant when it's in place. Lightly. People have a tendency to pack down soil around the plant which can smother the roots. If going from water propagation to soil, also very lightly cover the roots and lightly water the plant in with the water from the cutting vessel because there are hormones in that water that help the roots. You can do that for a couple of days and then go to your regular watering schedule, which for me is as needed as Techplant explained , not everything needs water at the same time.

I just bought a stunning, super variegated, orchid only to be told that variegated orchids rarely flower and usually die 😂

I think most of the pests comes from eggs in the soil.

Yeah I forgot to say them by name but I had footage from when I had them. Personally I don't mind them as much cuz I can physically crush them and usually they do not come back and they stay in clusters. But they are really annoying on aquarium floating plants

@@TechplantChannel yeah I've had an army of them living on a couple of my plants and they don't want to die even if I spray them with a diluted solution of isopropyl alcohol and water.

I got stuff growing everywhere. I think that's why my bin of recycled soil mix I dump dead stuff into and use to pot up new stuff works well
