As a Marine, we’re talking about humpen (grunt term) hiking/backpacking and carrying a 96hr load out: Food, water, ammo, clothing mission gear, and whatever you need!! After the Corps, we stuck with continuous question, how can I continue to keep kicking ass without carrying all that crap!

I always broke down a fight into parts. 1 I'm getting ready 2 its starting, try to overwhelm the enemy 3 try to conserve energy, supplies and personnel 4 How can we get out of this 5 what can we do to slow the effects of the fight 6 how can we go about controlling the fight better. Those are the things I assessed constantly in an extended gunfight. In a short engagement it was...oh shit...oh shit...oh shit. Fire back as fast as I can, hitting anything I could.
This instructor is telling you what his experiences are and what he believes in. He is being honest and upfront. If it is not what you want then don’t go to his course. It’s so much better to know upfront and not be disappointed in a course than to pay for a course that doesn’t meet your requirements. I will never get to go to his course, but if I had the means I would. I believe I would learn several great lessons from him. And I can almost bet I won’t engage targets past 600 yards. Cudos for honesty! Thank him for his service.

I tell people all the time, there is no magic number of bullets to take someone down. I've seen folks go down with one shot (usually to the heart or spine) and I've seen a guy dump a 100 round mag from his AK-47 while being riddled with HUNDREDS of rounds from at least 10 shooters.
One shot, one kill is specific to snipers. Other units, and organizations picked it up, but it's for snipers. Don't miss, sums it up. Sharing is caring in a gun fight though. Get multiple hits on target. Kill.

I 100% agree with him, having been to both Iraq and Afghanistan your engagement environment can literally totally change within minutes, being able to transition from cq to medium range shots is critical. And I do the same thing with my rifles, I have a tremor 3 on my Hk91, for me it’s literally perfect

My son and I completed Buck's carbine course back in August, we will progress to several of Buck's other courses soon. Two things that intrigued me the most about Buck's scoped carbine course were: (1) I'm a veteran and my son is 17 years of age. We both had great learnings from Buck's course regardless of our experience level (2) It reset our baseline (framework of thinking) of what is CQB versus long range (or ultra long range) shooting and it dispels common rumors of "range limitations" of the standard AR15 platforms
I want magnification at 200 to identify targets. I can drop a man-sized with a red dot/iron sights at that range, but 4-8x is nice to be able to see exactly who it is, what he has on him, and what he's doing.
His logic comes from working in a team element. With a lpvo you lose the peripheral vision that's needed to keep your muzzle clear of moving friendlies ect. I've seen many helmet cam vids where blue on blue was avoided simply because shooter was aware and could see.
Yeah in a situation where ur not just engaging the enemy and u don't know who's who, u need to identify ur target is it a threat and if it is does that threat present deadly force before u show em sum love.

During Army basic you're expected at least if you're Infantry to qualify with an M4 on targets out to 300yds with iron sights. Great point on not having to use the multi-power optic vs the red dot which would be a little faster to engage targets within that range.
In the hunting woods, if we hear 4/5 shots, we consider that "sawing trees," and not compensating to hit the target like Buck teaches--but just desperate shooting, most likely resulting in a miss. That's usually within the 250 yard range. I like what he is teaching in this situation; especially making use of modern equipment at longer range, using high capacity mags, and methodically compensating between shots to save time and be effective in hitting the target.
Dude no way!!! I talked to this dude in when I was a host at Smitty's in Moab. He told me about air assault and a bunch of stuff he had done while he was enlisted. I joined the Army shortly after that. Small world!
no. this isn't vietnam and the most common settings in which anyone who attends one of these courses or watches these videos would use a gun means throwing lead is not only ridiculously irresponsible, criminal, and stupid, it's wrong. only well aimed, deliberate shots count. the average of rounds per kill in vietnam is estimated at 50,000 with a quick google search. the estimate for the war on terror is above 200,000. so go ahead, grab a few thousand filled magazines and tens of thousands of dollars worth of ammo and throw it at the guy threatening your life.
@@bjornegan6421 you're dealing with the two extremes here. This practice range is extreme long range. Vietnam on average was "near ambush" and extreme close ranges. Please leave the conversation open to the two extremes and in between distance. There is a place for high volumes of fire, but granted that's not the point of the training in this video. But in some engagements, it is wise to employ/deliver a high volume of mediocre accuracy lead. In some instances it's perfectly legal. If you are justified to fire at a man, you are justified to miss as well. The trouble that you may refer to is a miss that his valuable property or an innocent... In that case refer to Be sure is your target and what is Beyond. Your concerns that you voiced strike me as a law enforcement training background. In a lawless state, such as war, rules of engagement and tactics are different. Let's all share and learn😊❤️

This is a great conversation. Especially when talking about gear. I see so many Tacticool TH-camrs with with all this expensive gear that most likely will never see the type of combat that warrants the need for all of that stuff. Save your money on the eye candy and prep for your home defense.

Buck , save yourself some steps , buy a drone . I use my drone as a spotter from 10 feet sitting on a milk crate . The battery just sitting there last for about two hours . But I'm 64 not young like you . I bought the Zeiss 6.5 to 20 with the Rapid Z - 1000 when it first came out and for .308 I still love it . Great video , I learn something from every one I watch .
I am a Licensed FAA Part 107 Professional Drone Pilot. As well as being a professional drone pilot, I'm also an avid UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) hobbyist, of many different kinds. Between my four sons and I, we own approximately 50 drones currently, of all types and styles. I have owned many more, approximately two hundred, possibly considerably more, that we used for content on our drone channel and website and then get rid of the bad ones. *In many years heavily involved with UAV's, I have never heard of a two hour flight time, or even close.* That just plain isn't true. *I seriously wish that was even a possibility!!!!!* The drone I have with the longest flight time, the RMUS Law Enforcement® drone, which flight time is advertised as 50 minutes, cost over $23,000. Most new professional drones that people own, like the most popular DJI drones, *by far,* advertise a flight 30 minutes. Even when the flight time is advertised 30 minutes, actual flight time is always less than advertised. Maybe if you just hover and not move, at all, you may get 30 minutes, or at least close. Most drones that aren't professional, fly from 5-15 minutes. Which Most people don't spend a minimum of $1,500, just to get an entry-level pro drone. The least expensive, yet still professional drones, *which none even fly an entire 30 minutes,* are drones like DJI Mavic Pro 2, Pro 2 Zoom or DJI Phantom 4 Pro, coating up to $2,000. The reason I keep mentioning DJI, DJI holds over 77% of the U.S. professional drone market, as of June 30, 2020. With no other single company holding even 4% of the U.S. drone market. Basically, although you may actually use a drone for your stated purpose, *there is no possible way, literally, that your drone battery last two hours. Or even anywhere close to that.* I have no idea what your intention was in not being truthful. However, I felt like it's my duty, as an FAA Professional Drone Pilot, to make these things clear to people, *drones do not fly two hours.* Before they went out and sent possibly thousands of dollars on a drone, under the assumption that it could do what you stated. Which they would undoubtedly could not. No hate coming from me, just clarity. It's entirely possible that you just simply heard something, then you repeated what you heard. It's entirely possible that you didn't purposely post untruths. By the way, I'm very curious what drone it is you have. It's *extremely easy to look up the flight time of each and every drone.* *Even if it's a drone you built from a kit, or even from just a frame and whatever electronics you put on it, it's still extremely easy to figure out what the largest battery each drone can fit into battery slot and, even what total weight it could carry, even if you strapped a tad bit battery to the top of the drone.* If you provide proof of a drone you have that will fly two hours, like unedited video evidence, I would *absolutely love* to see it and I will *happily* eat my words. Please, do provide what drone you have and if possible, video evidence.

I didn't say I got two hours flying , I didn't say I got two hours hovering , I didn't even say the props were turning or idling and I didn't even say I was recording ( though many times I do ) . What I said was the drone was sitting on a milk crate about 10 feet from the target just sitting there with the camera pointed at the target . And to be absolutely honest , I have never timed the battery with the drone just sitting on a milk crate but a close guess would be around two hours maybe a little less but close . I'm happy to know your an expert with drones , and guns i'm not either , but I try to be sure I have read the comment I plan to comment on , and I try to be sure I understand what I have read or heard before calling them a liar . I am not a preacher but am a christian though not the best example of one . I've had to drain *many, many* of batteries down, since even my aftermarket upgraded charges don't discharge, with drones on, no props and just sitting on my table. They last maybe an hour.

I have always lived in forest country. Long distance is 100 yards. Advantage goes to concealment, suppressors, camouflage, sniping. IMHO, a silenced, subsonic .22 LR 1X4 scope and seeing the other guy(s) before being seen are the keys to long life.
The military only gives you what you are issued. There is no special setup for them. They are limited in choices of a few small things. Civilians have a lot more options.

Awesome discussion with lots of great info and Mr Doyle did an excellent job explaining the purpose for. Really like what he said about using targets that you can get instant feedback from to make adjustments and instantly make follow up shots on target.
I’m a retired Army 11B that’s B4 qualified (Sniper, not Designated Marksman) and he’s right, the .308 has its benefits out to 1,000 yards but the bullet drop at that range is insane so you MUST be accurate on range estimation to be good at long range shooting. The wind can knock the bullet around to the point of a gentle zig-zag flight path so calling wind is also critical. Often we would spend hours reading wind at every 300 yards then calculate the impact of a full value 10 MPH wind at 900 yards on the projectile. Sniping is a deep rabbit hole and it does require a lot of classroom knowledge and good math skills helps greatly. My advice; trust your partner who’s calling wind for you, if he sucks at it, you’re both at risk of failure, you have to be an unbeatable team to be deadly. Wind direction and speed changes all the time so once the spotter gives you the hold off on target, you only have a few seconds to fire the round before that data is outdated and you have to halt the firing process and get a new read.
Weight I’m tired of carrying all the weight. Damn fat fingered before I could finish, m-4 red dot forward grip, like he said anything from up close and personal to 6-8 hundred, shoot move and communication, all the way!
That little bit about having students figure it out is great. There isnt going to be an instructor to give you advice in everything you do, especially a fight but even in more mundane things like being broken down on the side of the road. Sometimes you gotta figure shit out for yourself.

After I heard him say the 250 and CQB, I was curious. After some reading, it looks like CBQ does not have a narrow meaning. One source said up to 30 meters and another source said up to 100 meters. Basically, it is the use of personal weapons against an aggressor. Maybe the argument can be made that with the use of a PCC, the distance of CQB has grown.
I have to diagree, with the gentilemen here. Just because you trained at 1K yards doesn't mean that anything under is standard shooting. That is simply just a personal view on the range. For me in my view, the Army lists the max effective range of 308 / 7.62 at 800 Meters, generally I will consider 500 plus yards as long range because of the bullet. This changes with effectiveness at range of other bullets 223 / 5.56, 7.62x39, .300 WSM, 6.5 CM, etc. So what is long range shooting depends on the shooter.
I believe his comment on CQB is because at those ranges, windage and bullet drop aren't really accounted for with a battlefield zero. You shouldn't touch your sight adjustment inside of 300.
@@kerbalairforce8802 Thank you for the reply. At under 300M you get very little movement DEPENDING on the bullet used. With a 5.56 bullet at 300 meters you will get a much larger shift and great drop then 7.62. Yet at times you do even at less then 300m need to factor in the enviroment. Shooting across mountain valleys, skyscrapers, beaches and in extreme cold will need to be factored in. At that range in a battle you aren't trying to make the shot pretty as much as you are just trying to hit the guy somewhere. But talking about long range shooting, once you get past his obvisously ego driven boosting, you have more elements to address. Long range shooting is subjective and to me it means getting the max effective range from a bullet. In 5.56 it could be 400m, 7.62 it is 800m, 300 1200m, etc.
"If you only could have 1 rifle and could set it up how you want to what would you do" The comment on weight is true for any gun. Component price will dictate the lower limit for achievable weight, but the adage often used by backpackers is true for any gun build, pay attention to grams as they become kilos. Doesn't matter the kit, for almost everything that's going to be carried, if the kit can be made lighter and still perform it likely will be preferable. After putting together a WWSD inspired build and going shooting with friends, configuration preferences aside, everyone loved how light the build came out. For any gun build it's also worth reducing recoil and shot disruption if there is room for improvement and the current configuration isn't stable enough to allow for easy shot calling. Unlike the pursuit of ultralight components, investing in a better buffer or adjustable gas system is something that isn't going to be expensive. Some people seem to think that stability is determined by overall weight and reciprocating mass without giving much consideration to components that modify felt recoil.

I'd think a 3x magnifier would be good enough for 200 yards.
PID is important. I think his point is that 200m is easy to get good hits with red dot or irons
His logic comes from working in a team element. With a lpvo you lose the peripheral vision that's needed to keep your muzzle clear of moving friendlies ect. I've seen many helmet cam vids where blue on blue was avoided simply because shooter was aware and could see.
Yeah in a situation where ur not just engaging the enemy and u don't know who's who, u need to identify ur target is it a threat and if it is does that threat present deadly force before u show em sum love.

During Army basic you're expected at least if you're Infantry to qualify with an M4 on targets out to 300yds with iron sights. Great point on not having to use the multi-power optic vs the red dot which would be a little faster to engage targets within that range.

In the hunting woods, if we hear 4/5 shots, we consider that "sawing trees," and not compensating to hit the target like Buck teaches--but just desperate shooting, most likely resulting in a miss. That's usually within the 250 yard range. I like what he is teaching in this situation; especially making use of modern equipment at longer range, using high capacity mags, and methodically compensating between shots to save time and be effective in hitting the target.

no. this isn't vietnam and the most common settings in which anyone who attends one of these courses or watches these videos would use a gun means throwing lead is not only ridiculously irresponsible, criminal, and stupid, it's wrong. only well aimed, deliberate shots count. the average of rounds per kill in vietnam is estimated at 50,000 with a quick google search. the estimate for the war on terror is above 200,000. so go ahead, grab a few thousand filled magazines and tens of thousands of dollars worth of ammo and throw it at the guy threatening your life.
@@bjornegan6421 you're dealing with the two extremes here. This practice range is extreme long range. Vietnam on average was "near ambush" and extreme close ranges. Please leave the conversation open to the two extremes and in between distance. There is a place for high volumes of fire, but granted that's not the point of the training in this video. But in some engagements, it is wise to employ/deliver a high volume of mediocre accuracy lead. In some instances it's perfectly legal. If you are justified to fire at a man, you are justified to miss as well. The trouble that you may refer to is a miss that his valuable property or an innocent... In that case refer to Be sure is your target and what is Beyond.
Your concerns that you voiced strike me as a law enforcement training background. In a lawless state, such as war, rules of engagement and tactics are different.

This is a great conversation. Especially when talking about gear. I see so many Tacticool TH-camrs with with all this expensive gear that most likely will never see the type of combat that warrants the need for all of that stuff. Save your money on the eye candy and prep for your home defense.

Buck , save yourself some steps , buy a drone . I use my drone as a spotter from 10 feet sitting on a milk crate .
The battery just sitting there last for about two hours . But I'm 64 not young like you . I bought the Zeiss 6.5 to 20

I am a Licensed FAA Part 107 Professional Drone Pilot. As well as being a professional drone pilot, I'm also an avid UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) hobbyist, of many different kinds. Between my four sons and I, we own approximately 50 drones currently, of all types and styles. I have owned many more, approximately two hundred, possibly considerably more, that we used for content on our drone channel and website and then get rid of the bad ones. *In many years heavily involved with UAV's, I have never heard of a two hour flight time, or even close.* That just plain isn't true. *I seriously wish that was even a possibility!!!!!*
The drone I have with the longest flight time, the RMUS Law Enforcement® drone, which flight time is advertised as 50 minutes, cost over $23,000. Most new professional drones that people own, like the most popular DJI drones, *by far,* advertise a flight 30 minutes. Even when the flight time is advertised 30 minutes, actual flight time is always less than advertised. Maybe if you just hover and not move, at all, you may get 30 minutes, or at least close.
Most drones that aren't professional, fly from 5-15 minutes. Which Most people don't spend a minimum of $1,500, just to get an entry-level pro drone. The least expensive, yet still professional drones, *which none even fly an entire 30 minutes,* are drones like DJI Mavic Pro 2, Pro 2 Zoom or DJI Phantom 4 Pro, coating up to $2,000. The reason I keep mentioning DJI, DJI holds over 77% of the U.S. professional drone market, as of June 30, 2020. With no other single company holding even 4% of the U.S. drone market.
Basically, although you may actually use a drone for your stated purpose, *there is no possible way, literally, that your drone battery last two hours. Or even anywhere close to that.* I have no idea what your intention was in not being truthful.
However, I felt like it's my duty, as an FAA Professional Drone Pilot, to make these things clear to people, *drones do not fly two hours.* Before they went out and sent possibly thousands of dollars on a drone, under the assumption that it could do what you stated. Which they would undoubtedly could not.

It's *extremely easy to look up the flight time of each and every drone.* *Even if it's a drone you built from a kit, or even from just a frame and whatever electronics you put on it, it's still extremely easy to figure out what the largest battery each drone can fit into battery slot and, even what total weight it could carry, even if you strapped a tad bit battery to the top of the drone.*
If you provide proof of a drone you have that will fly two hours, like unedited video evidence, I would *absolutely love* to see it and I will *happily* eat my words. Please, do provide what drone you have and if possible, video evidence.

I've had to drain *many, many* of batteries down, since even my aftermarket upgraded charges don't discharge, with drones on, no props and just sitting on my table. They last maybe an hour.

I have always lived in forest country. Long distance is 100 yards. Advantage goes to concealment, suppressors, camouflage, sniping.
IMHO, a silenced, subsonic .22 LR 1X4 scope and seeing the other guy(s) before being seen are the keys to long life.

I feel asking a trained gunfighter if there's a perfect setup is a little like asking a trained chef if there's a perfect knife.
The military only gives you what you are issued. There is no special setup for them. They are limited in choices of a few small things. Civilians have a lot more options.

I’m a retired Army 11B that’s B4 qualified (Sniper, not Designated Marksman) and he’s right, the .308 has its benefits out to 1,000 yards but the bullet drop at that range is insane so you MUST be accurate on range estimation to be good at long range shooting. The wind can knock the bullet around to the point of a gentle zig-zag flight path so calling wind is also critical. Often we would spend hours reading wind at every 300 yards then calculate the impact of a full value 10 MPH wind at 900 yards on the projectile. Sniping is a deep rabbit hole and it does require a lot of classroom knowledge and good math skills helps greatly. My advice; trust your partner who’s calling wind for you, if he sucks at it, you’re both at risk of failure, you have to be an unbeatable team to be deadly. Wind direction and speed changes all the time so once the spotter gives you the hold off on target, you only have a few seconds to fire the round before that data is outdated and you have to halt the firing process and get a new read.

That little bit about having students figure it out is great. There isnt going to be an instructor to give you advice in everything you do, especially a fight but even in more mundane things like being broken down on the side of the road. Sometimes you gotta figure shit out for yourself.

After I heard him say the 250 and CQB, I was curious. After some reading, it looks like CBQ does not have a narrow meaning. One source said up to 30 meters and another source said up to 100 meters. Basically, it is the use of personal weapons against an aggressor. Maybe the argument can be made that with the use of a PCC, the distance of CQB has grown.

I use the Army standard. 300 meters and in with iron sights. My current location doesn't lend itself any further than that on any of the local ranges.

I have to diagree, with the gentilemen here. Just because you trained at 1K yards doesn't mean that anything under is standard shooting. That is simply just a personal view on the range. For me in my view, the Army lists the max effective range of 308 / 7.62 at 800 Meters, generally I will consider 500 plus yards as long range because of the bullet. This changes with effectiveness at range of other bullets 223 / 5.56, 7.62x39, .300 WSM, 6.5 CM, etc. So what is long range shooting depends on the shooter.
I believe his comment on CQB is because at those ranges, windage and bullet drop aren't really accounted for with a battlefield zero. You shouldn't touch your sight adjustment inside of 300.
@@kerbalairforce8802 Thank you for the reply. At under 300M you get very little movement DEPENDING on the bullet used. With a 5.56 bullet at 300 meters you will get a much larger shift and great drop then 7.62. Yet at times you do even at less then 300m need to factor in the enviroment. Shooting across mountain valleys, skyscrapers, beaches and in extreme cold will need to be factored in. At that range in a battle you aren't trying to make the shot pretty as much as you are just trying to hit the guy somewhere. But talking about long range shooting, once you get past his obvisously ego driven boosting, you have more elements to address. Long range shooting is subjective and to me it means getting the max effective range from a bullet. In 5.56 it could be 400m, 7.62 it is 800m, 300 1200m, etc.

"If you only could have 1 rifle and could set it up how you want to what would you do" The comment on weight is true for any gun. Component price will dictate the lower limit for achievable weight, but the adage often used by backpackers is true for any gun build, pay attention to grams as they become kilos. Doesn't matter the kit, for almost everything that's going to be carried, if the kit can be made lighter and still perform it likely will be preferable. After putting together a WWSD inspired build and going shooting with friends, configuration preferences aside, everyone loved how light the build came out.
For any gun build it's also worth reducing recoil and shot disruption if there is room for improvement and the current configuration isn't stable enough to allow for easy shot calling. Unlike the pursuit of ultralight components, investing in a better buffer or adjustable gas system is something that isn't going to be expensive. Some people seem to think that stability is determined by overall weight and reciprocating mass without giving much consideration to components that modify felt recoil.
