This is great info. But I recommend this more to bassists than regular keys players.
As a bass player if the keys player told me they wanted to add sub bass I would say I’d rather do it myself. Really hard not to compete with the bass unless the keys really stay low with a sine or triangle wave and playing whole notes.

💯 it will sound so muddy and terrible if both are doing it

I would love to see a video getting this set up for a Bass player to use with a small midi controller.

That’s what we do at my church the bass player has a 49 key midi controller so he switches between that and his bass guitar

Yes I want to do this. Is his Midi controller being run through a laptop and DAW?

Excellent David. This is the next step for Keys players to transition from layering pads under piano to actually playing parts. Current production of CCM contradicts the old platitude of the piano bass notes and synth bass "stepping on the toes of the bass guitar". But as you mentioned it's critical that the sound/mixer engineer is on board to allow those parts to be heard properly.

Really loving these vids! I was wondering though: would you be able to make a vid sometime going over keys in a smaller setting? Not every church has the musicians available to put out a full band (drum/bass/keys/acoustic and electric guitars). Would be interesting to see what can be done with SK to maximize the effect for smaller bands. Say keys and guitar+vocals for example :)

As the bass guitar player at my church, I started playing synth bass as more and more tunes either featured a synth bass part and when a "regular" bass part wasn't available. It was a natural fit for me, coming from an EDM background. I was up to the challenge of learning myself how to incorporate using an Ableton Push or 24 Key Midi Keyboard to play Ableton on stage. I'm now playing a quarter to half of a weekly setlist with synth parts now.
What helped me get over my hesitation of even trying this, was realizing the church was already fine with using sub bass. Our church will play popular worship songs before or after service. All these songs have plenty of sub to provide power and impact to the music. Even our bumper songs and welcome "background" music uses a lot of sub. I felt our worship set should have that power and impact as well.
Sine I made the change, people in the audience are always more interested in the equipment I'm using on stage than what frequency range these sounds are making. I was worried I'd get a lot of push back about the change. Instead, I realized that people were fine with hearing sub, they just weren't use to seeing someone else playing "keyboards" on stage.
I found your content because I was searching around for playing synth bass in worship. Thanks for all the videos you do. Hopefully our church will add Sunday keys soon.

Also a bassist, and bought a sophisticated synth pedal for this exact reason. PLEASE help though. I'm trying to build the generic bass synth sound from scratch (and with no experience). Sawtooth? Square wave? Sine wave? Octave down? Distortion? I am completely lost. Any help is greatly appreciated

@@Thurgor_SupremeAny basic software synth will work fine. I use Serum. Take a sawtooth or saw wave, add a low pass filter, and roll back the highs.
For hardware, I use a Launchpad X connected to Ableton. I use Ableton for both my bass guitar tones (via audio interface) and the synth sounds.

As a worship guitar player getting into this stuff it's very helpful. Think you could maybe do an analysis or explanation of Travis Cottrell's version of What a Beautiful Name/Agnus Dei?
