Used to travel around East Asia a lot between 2006 and 2016, and even then, all the talk was of China developing its internal market, and how they would improve the buying power of their working and middle class folk, so they were not so dependent on exports. Today, every Ford Mach E that sells for around $50K costs Ford over $120K! GM is in the same boat, as is Mercedes, VW, BMW, and every other legacy manufacturer. Also, Tesla model 3 and Model Y cost less than the average selling price of cars in the USA. Lower cost than a base Corolla TCO 5 years and 10 years... Tesla outsells the cheaper Chinese cars other than the under 10k EVs without safety features... The amount of demand they would get for a cheaper EV means that hey have to be large enough before trying, or it would be useless. Less margins on lower priced car, means that you have to ramp up to higher production numbers before you break even so having size, cash saved up, good relationships with parts suppliers that have to grow along with your ramp is super important...

I think it is very impressive how the two Richard’s are able to bounce ideas off one another and distil a lot of very interesting ideas and concepts. It looks easy for them but surely it is a real skill/art to pull off. I do feel however, that China is totally underestimated by many in the West. As Richard W. has pointed out elsewhere, they have been humiliated by the West for several hundred years at least, and I think we, the West, are still thinking that China and the rest of the non-Western world has the lowest standard in all aspects of life. This is far from the truth now. The West, don’t forget, consists of around 14% of the world's population only - 86% of all people live OUTSIDE the West. I have visited China very recently for work, Guangzhou (Canton) and the areas around it, and honestly I think that the Chinese are at least 50 years ahead of the US if not more in ALL aspects of their lives. There is no comparison. From their amazing infrastructure, to their health system, their education system and intellectual activities, their economic system (you know they have digital currency which is miles ahead of where the US is on this), their art and cultural activities. I think that the only thing the US exports is its military know-how. I’m sorry to be so brutal, but it should be said. I’m not sure whether the US will ever recover - it’s infrastructure is practically too far gone, it’s health and education system totally unaffordable for the majority. There is little culture to speak of - concrete, oil, and survival (no other talk except making money, money, money). I think it is a much more dire situation than the two Richard’s make out.

Trump killed the deals we had that were very favorable to the USA. We got those deals in the 1990s when the USA was a super strong force in the world and Trump just threw that away at a time when USA was much weaker and we got way worse deals... Most of cars are EV. Life is much more convenient in China than US ( I have been living in US for 30 years). Delivery services in China ( cities big and small) are 24/7. You can order many many many different things and get them delivered in an hour or less for 3 dollars item. People need to remember, Americans average income is about 5 times more than Chinese, but cost of living in US is much more than that in China in many ways. I had a surgery in Cincinnati, Ohio that cost me over 30k US dollars, and the same surgery in China cost 2k US dollars. When comparing income form different countries, pay attention to the purchasing power.

Greetings from Spain. We already have car sharing in many forms here. In Madrid it's great. If your travelling with more then two people, it's cheaper to get around the city with a e-city car. Just find the closes one to you that is available and , leave it where ever you get out, no special place. Some services and rates that are only for Spanish residents and it's cheaper for students and the elderly. And it's cheaper in many cases to rent or leases a new car over buying one.

I still admire the openness in discussions and democracy you have and as I see both of this countries is going downhill in governmental duties, in many fields like healthcare, education e,tc. Hungary follows the US "suburb" ideas which is a dead end for the society. Mobility is a key issue. Of course it also have autonomous driving on par with the latest version of Tesla FSD. and its battery is chemically NON-flamable. all for 35,000usd. Not only Chinese ev tech is superior it is also cheaper, simply because economies of scale and mature supply chains. The EV race is already over, and China has won. With more tariffs apply on import of Chinese goods, pretty soon those Chinese made agricultural machinery is going to be less competitive in the US as those farmers in the US will have to pay a higher price for those machinery made in US which in term, they have to increase their price on their agricultural products like wheat, corn, barley and so on to the market which means Americans have to pay more for all that.
I know Taiwan makes a lot of tools, and those WILL NOT be affected by the tariffs. They do make good tools at very good prices. With respects to agricultural machines but am curious if they from China or Taiwan because it makes a difference when it comes to tariffs.
I got to be honest, I am not crazy about electric cars because those batteries are very expensive. But $20,000 for the car and the batteries last 10 years I think it's worth having, a battery car is much cheaper to operate because it doesn't have an internal combustion engine with a whole lot of expensive problems that comes along with the internal combustion engine

Australia for example is a die hard US vassal, but it has no such restrictions on Chinese EVs because it doesn't have an automobile manufacturing industry that it needs to protect. Elon makes $1 a year from Tesla. The 50B pay package is a theoretical number, based on the stock price that fluctuates like crazy. It also seemed impossible for him to meet the criteria to get that "bonus". His bonus is that he gets to buy Tesla shares at an old price. He would pay about $6b to Tesla for those shares. He cannot sell those shares for 5 years. Tesla gets the cash now, is usable no matter what happens to the share price in five years... At east it is a great deal for Tesla! Tesla does not have to pay the most successful CEO that we have ever seen... Instead they will be up $6b in real cash (losses are only theoretical)...
BYD would be best solution for the entire world. Best ev and less than half the price of a tesla. I think having 30 million BYDs on the road worldwide will automatically reduce global emissions rapidly. Bring these cars in, duty free but also tax free.

Short term protectionism is OK. It gives an industry time to catch up to foreign competition. The problem is companies want the protectionism to continue.
The problem with public transportation is the complete lack of convenience. A lot of people (especially the elderly) who are, in one way or another, disabled don’t live near a bus stop and can’t afford to move.
Doubtful.. the biggest cost in an EV is the battery and most US battery tech is dependent on Nickel which are way more expensive than the LFP used in Chinese EVs, and 90% of those are made in China which the US has now blocked. US vassals like Japan and SK are way behind the Chinese in LFP manufacturing. Until such times when the US can manufacture or source LFP batteries cost effectively. They will not be able to reach that level of cost in their EVs

The thing with tariffs is they're useful if you want to build industry, but if your domestic automakers rely on foreign companies and you slap their country with tariffs you're screwing up your automakers too. Refining of lithium/cobalt/graphite etc is mostly done in China, and the batteries are mostly produced there. It is honestly amazing how China kickstarted their EV industry with 40 billion $ which for size of an economy like China is a bargain. They obviously have policies that incentivize people to drive EV (it is very hard to register ICE car in big cities, creating demand for low polluting vehicles).
This is a little too, "You will own nothing and be happy," for my taste. Kind of like, over inflate the price of everything and make people lease or rent to get to work, go shopping or just spontaneously go for a drive. Also, one reason people have their own bicycles is because one size does not fit all. Hard to imagine Americans will go for it. I will take the Chinese EV over being forced to take public transportation everywhere (though it's nice to have the option in certain situations). If I lived in a large city, that would be a different story, but I would hate living in a large city.
You also don't want car ownership as the only viable option, creating traffic is another way of reducing freemdom and the benefit of ownership for everyone. Gonna have more fair options, public transport in big city is a start, and don't believe the fear mongering that public transport will outright your ownership of car, it rarely does, unless you are in a super crowded city like Beijing. Oh, and in smaller city and rural area in China, ownership of car ia really common place.

Americans are used to having that independence and the only reason to not have it, now, is extreme cost due to price gouging or taxes, which is not a good reason, but this seems to be what he is saying, that people will not be able to afford cars here and will have to get used to it. I am one of the people who will have a hard time affording a car if used car prices don't come down and I certainly won't be able to afford an electric one, so it worries me. My parents always had automatics so I learned on those and when I was a student I drove their cast offs. Couldn't wait until I could get a manual. I started with a little red Geo hatch, one year old, great deal. Sold it way too soon. The only car I ever bought new was in '95. A little red Civic with the split hatch (No air conditioning to save money, lol--which I could never tolerate today.) Loved that car. Drove it until the body rusted out. Then I had a used '97 Civic, bright yellow, which someone painted. Rusted too, but I was able to sell it to a young guy who wanted to fix the body. After that I found good cars that happened to be automatics--A '95 Toyota Corolla. The only car that rusted so completely I had to bring it to a salvage yard. The engine was still perfect. Then briefly I had a Honda Accord 10th Anniv edition. Came from Cali, so no rust at all and I sold it to an ecstatic young man from NYC who had been looking for an un-rusted one for year. Now I have a 2007 Toyota Camry that was my mom's who no longer drives (back to the parent car, lol.) Not what I would have picked, but it is a good car and fancier than I have ever owned and only had 60,000 mi on at the time. But, it won't last forever. Not sure what I will do after this. I am a musician and sometimes have to drive between states late at night with my instrument and equipment. I also do some housecleaning --also a decent amount of driving with equipment. Don't have a lot of money, especially now, so I have been concerned about how I will manage. Not sure how I feel about EV's. I am not that into all the technology in general and it seems to make repairs a lot more costly. Of course, the world obviously can't handle all the emissions either. I guess I am like the people on the forums you check in with, betwixt and between and worried options may be disappearing.

This of course doesn't happen in a vacuum. So China now is selling US treasury bonds. Making it more difficult to sell more, so sell the interest rate must be higher. Causing more inflation. So instead of cheap EVs, everything gets more expensive.
Plain and simple oil industry and the legacy auto industry wants to slow the EV transition. Its about money and those with influence on the gov. Here's an idea. Why doesn't Tesla build their low cost model in the US and sell for under 30K this will solve the problem.

The Chinese have been leading the way in anything electric for a long time. They make good stuff and affordable. Consumers lose here and like you pointed out, so much for the EV transition here.
The 100% tariff immediately make s me think that Ford, GM, and even Tesla will be protected as long as they are charging us just less than twice what the cars are worse. Meanwhile, they will become progressively unable to export American cars. Why can't we just do that same thing China did when our companies came there - allow them to build factories here as long as the cars are made here and factories are 51/49 percent locally owned? Just like with Western automaker skills slowly being absorbed by local technicians, we will have jobs and the knowledge will slowly cement itself here.

I'm not buying a Chinese EV, given the numerous reports of reliability issues from that country. In fact, BYD EV's are piling up in European ports for this very reason. This is why I have concerns about BYD Dolphin Mini EV's exported to South America, because if reliability issues crop up there, that could be a huge issue.

I don't know about the USA but here in the UK, Chinese cars have very little import duty, yet a $12,000 Chinese car sells for about $36,000. Many are more expensive than Tesla's, and nobody is buying them, they are piling up at docks and storage area's all over Europe, who on earth would buy a car off an unknown manufacturer that could be gone a few months after purchase.
Im not fool enough to think that the electric cars made in china are a "better car" at a lower price. They ARE a cheaper car fof 100% certainty, but i can give you about 90% confidence that the chinese cars ARE at least slightly inferior in quality. Does it make up for the cost? No...hell no, god no, big effing no, BUT its absolutely intellectually dishonest to claim their vehicles are BETTER by any quality related metric. Ive yet to see a single thing that they win in on average, whether were talking economics of energy usage, raw power, comfort(subjective but if youve seen the inside of these chinese cars they arent great, theyll do) or safety and crash testing. They arent better, but they ARE something that people like me, disabled people who can barely afford to live, could maybe get and drive... and even worse. Why can't you buy a super cheap Chinese electric car ? Well, your government doesn't want you to and you can still buy a Chinese electric car but you have to pay double the price for it because your government set a 100% tariff on import of Chinese EVs. Which means for example, for the same Chinese brand and model EV, other country are paying $20k a unit to the Chinese car maker but you have to pay $40K for the same car ($20k goes to the Chinese car maker, $20k goes to your government) that's how tariff works. I have visited China very recently for work, Guangzhou (Canton) and the areas around it, and honestly I think that the Chinese are at least 50 years ahead of the US if not more in ALL aspects of their lives. There is no comparison. From their amazing infrastructure, to their health system, their education system and intellectual activities, their economic system (you know they have digital currency which is miles ahead of where the US is on this), their art and cultural activities. I think that the only thing the US exports is its military know-how. I’m sorry to be so brutal, but it should be said. I’m not sure whether the US will ever recover - it’s infrastructure is practically too far gone, it’s health and education system totally unaffordable for the majority. There is little culture to speak of - concrete, oil, and survival (no other talk except making money, money, money). I think it is a much more dire situation than the two Richard’s make out.

Recommend to you a good channel by a patriotic US citizen who runs a company in China, importing heavy machinery and equipment of various sorts made in China (tractors, street food court vans and so on) to US buyers -- Inside China Business. He is a very modest and well-mannered gentleman. I was extremely surprised to find out that there are still some people in the US that are intelligent and wise, and void of neocon kind of stupidity and belligerence.

People need to remember, Americans average income is about 5 times more than Chinese, but cost of living in US is much more than that in China in many ways. I had a surgery in Cincinnati, Ohio that cost me over 30k US dollars, and the same surgery in China cost 2k US dollars. When comparing income form different countries, pay attention to the purchasing power.

Greetings from Spain. We already have car sharing in many forms here. In Madrid it's great. If your travelling with more then two people, it's cheaper to get around the city with a e-city car. Just find the closes one to you that is available and , leave it where ever you get out, no special place. Some services and rates that are only for Spanish residents and it's cheaper for students and the elderly. And it's cheaper in many cases to rent or leases a new car over buying one.

I still admire the openness in discussions and democracy you have and as I see both of this countries is going downhill in governmental duties, in many fields like healthcare, education e,tc.
Hungary follows the US "suburb" ideas which is a dead end for the society. Mobility is a key issue. Car is not a solution in any kind, and a plain sleeping quarter neighborhood is just not the way how society should develop. We (our companies) educated China technically, my US companies had factories in Shenzen, Zhuhai, e,tc, shutting down manufacturing in Salinas CA, Rochester NY etc. We educated them on how to be good and efficient and they just overgrown us, while we were laughing about the copies of the products they made of our products than doing better ones.

With more tariffs apply on import of Chinese goods, pretty soon those Chinese made agricultural machinery is going to be less competitive in the US as those farmers in the US will have to pay a higher price for those machinery made in US which in term, they have to increase their price on their agricultural products like wheat, corn, barley and so on to the market which means Americans have to pay more for all that.
I know Taiwan makes a lot of tools, and those WILL NOT be affected by the tariffs. They do make good tools at very good prices.

But $20,000 for the car and the batteries last 10 years I think it's worth having, a battery car is much cheaper to operate because it doesn't have an internal combustion engine with a whole lot of expensive problems that comes along with the internal combustion engine

You got it.. but it's actually worse than that. Even traditional US vassals will think twice about imposing the same protectionist policies. Australia for example is a die hard US vassal, but it has no such restrictions on Chinese EVs because it doesn't have an automobile manufacturing industry that it needs to protect. Italy, another US ally, is going further to solicit Chinese EV companies to go and build there. So the US will find itself increasingly isolated and its Big 3..well 2, increasingly uncompetitive in the rest of the world.

Elon makes $1 a year from Tesla. The 50B pay package is a theoretical number, based on the stock price that fluctuates like crazy. It also seemed impossible for him to meet the criteria to get that "bonus". His bonus is that he gets to buy Tesla shares at an old price. He would pay about $6b to Tesla for those shares. He cannot sell those shares for 5 years. Tesla gets the cash now, is usable no matter what happens to the share price in five years... At east it is a great deal for Tesla! Tesla does not have to pay the most successful CEO that we have ever seen... Instead they will be up $6b in real cash (losses are only theoretical)...

BYD would be best solution for the entire world. Best ev and less than half the price of a tesla. I think having 30 million BYDs on the road worldwide will automatically reduce global emissions rapidly. Bring these cars in, duty free but also tax free.

Short term protectionism is OK. It gives an industry time to catch up to foreign competition. The problem is companies want the protectionism to continue.

The problem with public transportation is the complete lack of convenience. A lot of people (especially the elderly) who are, in one way or another, disabled don’t live near a bus stop and can’t afford to move.

Doubtful.. the biggest cost in an EV is the battery and most US battery tech is dependent on Nickel which are way more expensive than the LFP used in Chinese EVs, and 90% of those are made in China which the US has now blocked. US vassals like Japan and SK are way behind the Chinese in LFP manufacturing. Until such times when the US can manufacture or source LFP batteries cost effectively. They will not be able to reach that level of cost in their EVs

The thing with tariffs is they're useful if you want to build industry, but if your domestic automakers rely on foreign companies and you slap their country with tariffs you're screwing up your automakers too. Refining of lithium/cobalt/graphite etc is mostly done in China, and the batteries are mostly produced there. It is honestly amazing how China kickstarted their EV industry with 40 billion $ which for size of an economy like China is a bargain. They obviously have policies that incentivize people to drive EV (it is very hard to register ICE car in big cities, creating demand for low polluting vehicles).

This is a little too, "You will own nothing and be happy," for my taste. Kind of like, over inflate the price of everything and make people lease or rent to get to work, go shopping or just spontaneously go for a drive.

Hard to imagine Americans will go for it. I will take the Chinese EV over being forced to take public transportation everywhere (though it's nice to have the option in certain situations). If I lived in a large city, that would be a different story, but I would hate living in a large city.
You also don't want car ownership as the only viable option, creating traffic is another way of reducing freemdom and the benefit of ownership for everyone.
Gonna have more fair options, public transport in big city is a start, and don't believe the fear mongering that public transport will outright your ownership of car, it rarely does, unless you are in a super crowded city like Beijing.
Oh, and in smaller city and rural area in China, ownership of car ia really common place.

Americans are used to having that independence and the only reason to not have it, now, is extreme cost due to price gouging or taxes, which is not a good reason, but this seems to be what he is saying, that people will not be able to afford cars here and will have to get used to it.

I almost always had sticks, but started with automatics. My parents always had automatics so I learned on those and when I was a student I drove their cast offs. Couldn't wait until I could get a manual.
I started with a little red Geo hatch, one year old, great deal. Sold it way too soon. The only car I ever bought new was in '95. A little red Civic with the split hatch (No air conditioning to save money, lol--which I could never tolerate today.) Loved that car. Drove it until the body rusted out. Then I had a used '97 Civic, bright yellow, which someone painted. Rusted too, but I was able to sell it to a young guy who wanted to fix the body. After that I found good cars that happened to be automatics--A '95 Toyota Corolla. The only car that rusted so completely I had to bring it to a salvage yard. The engine was still perfect. Then briefly I had a Honda Accord 10th Anniv edition. Came from Cali, so no rust at all and I sold it to an ecstatic young man from NYC who had been looking for an un-rusted one for year.
Now I have a 2007 Toyota Camry that was my mom's who no longer drives (back to the parent car, lol.) Not what I would have picked, but it is a good car and fancier than I have ever owned and only had 60,000 mi on at the time. But, it won't last forever.
Not sure what I will do after this. I am a musician and sometimes have to drive between states late at night with my instrument and equipment. I also do some housecleaning --also a decent amount of driving with equipment. Don't have a lot of money, especially now, so I have been concerned about how I will manage.
Not sure how I feel about EV's. I am not that into all the technology in general and it seems to make repairs a lot more costly. Of course, the world obviously can't handle all the emissions either. I guess I am like the people on the forums you check in with, betwixt and between and worried options may be disappearing.

This of course doesn't happen in a vacuum. So China now is selling US treasury bonds. Making it more difficult to sell more, so sell the interest rate must be higher. Causing more inflation. So instead of cheap EVs, everything gets more expensive.
Plain and simple oil industry and the legacy auto industry wants to slow the EV transition. Its about money and those with influence on the gov.

The Chinese have been leading the way in anything electric for a long time. They make good stuff and affordable. Consumers lose here and like you pointed out, so much for the EV transition here.

The 100% tariff immediately make s me think that Ford, GM, and even Tesla will be protected as long as they are charging us just less than twice what the cars are worse. Meanwhile, they will become progressively unable to export American cars. Why can't we just do that same thing China did when our companies came there - allow them to build factories here as long as the cars are made here and factories are 51/49 percent locally owned? Just like with Western automaker skills slowly being absorbed by local technicians, we will have jobs and the knowledge will slowly cement itself here.

I'm not buying a Chinese EV, given the numerous reports of reliability issues from that country. In fact, BYD EV's are piling up in European ports for this very reason. This is why I have concerns about BYD Dolphin Mini EV's exported to South America, because if reliability issues crop up there, that could be a huge issue.

I don't know about the USA but here in the UK, Chinese cars have very little import duty, yet a $12,000 Chinese car sells for about $36,000.
Many are more expensive than Tesla's, and nobody is buying them, they are piling up at docks and storage area's all over Europe, who on earth would buy a car off an unknown manufacturer that could be gone a few months after purchase.

Im not fool enough to think that the electric cars made in china are a "better car" at a lower price. They ARE a cheaper car fof 100% certainty, but i can give you about 90% confidence that the chinese cars ARE at least slightly inferior in quality. Does it make up for the cost? No...hell no, god no, big effing no, BUT its absolutely intellectually dishonest to claim their vehicles are BETTER by any quality related metric. Ive yet to see a single thing that they win in on average, whether were talking economics of energy usage, raw power, comfort(subjective but if youve seen the inside of these chinese cars they arent great, theyll do) or safety and crash testing. They arent better, but they ARE something that people like me, disabled people who can barely afford to live, could maybe get and drive... and even worse. If i got ahold of solar panels suddenly id be "driving on sunshine... whoooooa" and oil and electric companies dont feel good about it because they dont get the few dollars i do have.

Well, your government doesn't want you to and you can still buy a Chinese electric car but you have to pay double the price for it because your government set a 100% tariff on import of Chinese EVs. Which means for example, for the same Chinese brand and model EV, other country are paying $20k a unit to the Chinese car maker but you have to pay $40K for the same car ($20k goes to the Chinese car maker, $20k goes to your government) that's how tariff works. Americans are screwed. 😁 😆 🤣

Let's be honest, it is mostly political. Biden needs the UAW's vote to have a chance. Chinese EVs is their worst nightmare. Fewer workers per car & lower wages to compete, or every OEM goes BK. It is too late to start with a blank sheet of paper. The only play left is protectionism by ridiculous tariffs & dump the mess to the next guy/gal. Our market is still big enough it'd take a few years to roll over.
