I've always felt it was poetic for them to pick fairies for this job. Dragons were dominating the competitive scene through brute force alone, so it's really poignant that the only ones to stop them were adorable pink fluffy characters who didn't feel a thing from their attacks. It's just like Pokemon to turn the expectations upside-down like that.

The problem is fairies aren't cute benevolant beings like Tinkerbell, it isn't realistic.
Fairies refer to beings who were feared in old times!
      Yes, they were feared.
Fairy comes from 'fate' because fairies are so powerful that they affect the destiny of humans.
There were fairy doctors, doctors who treat humans who come in contact with these beings.
Fairies care more about themselves and Nature(plants, animals, etc, than about humans.
Many fairies don't care about humans.
Many fairies are dangerous to humans.
Dragons aren't too different from fairies, both of them were feared and are dangerous.

Even before they added the Fairy Type, I had a feeling that some Pokemon, especially certain Normal Pokemon like Jigglypuff, Clefairy and Togekiss, felt... "different". Like there was something about them that was telling me "They should be a different type besides Normal, but they don't fit with any of the other existing types". It seemed sort of obvious to me, but I don't know if that was *_only_* me.

Maybe it was the fact that fairy types before fairy type was a thing were treated like aliens way more than the extraterrestrial Pokémon that are already there, or maybe it’s just because most of them look very huggable and joyful

I always thought that an alleged "Light type" could be called the "Hero type" in Japanese to make contrast with the "Dark/Evil type". The interesting thing about them would be that they are both super effective against one another, because light shines through darkness while darkness shades on light. Meanwhile, the hero always traditionally defeats the evil, but there are also stories where the evil defeats the hero, at least momentarily, with unfair tricks and traps.

They're weak to Fire which makes sense, but Fighting and Steel and Rock on the other hand dont make sense, Ice only resists itself, its effective vs Flying and Dragon and Grass, but not Bug for some reason, and it is resisted by Fire, Ice and, Water for some reason.
I see no reason why a type like Ice has to be handicapped so harshly, adding effective vs Bug, removing two of the weaknesses between Rock Fighting and Steel, and making it do normal damage vs Water would make it less bad.

    • @zetsubou1v1

Part of the mythos of dragons is that they reign supreme(for the most part). They are hard to damage by natural means, hence their original weaknesses: itself and ice because save for seasonal shifts it rarely appears outside high elevations. Also big lizards. Poison is a natural or man made substance(that dragons often have access to), so it's not exactly suited for the task, although you could make an arguement for it via the Orochi myth, poisoning the serpent with alcohol before slaying it. A better arguement could be made for steel, but steel was already quite powerful beforehand, and does have more prominence as a weakness for fairies and magic than dragons.

Gen 8: hatrene, ineedee, snom, eiscue, the new squirl thing...and I think that's it? I might be missing a mom or two.
