    Perhaps some may have already known about this before, but the below Tweet/video was mind-blowing. The ISU used Sasha Trusova's World Championships free skate last year as an example of 3.00-4.75 in Transitions PCS. Meanwhile she gets 9.0s here. Insane.

      On olympic ice Anna owned the night. She was the only one who blocked out the nerves and nailed those quad combinations and combined that with artistry. I liked the Japanese ladies but they lacked the flow and artistry of Anna--that was the difference for gold medal.

    I love watching Anna's and Kamila's programs. They're incredibly enjoyable IF you think about them as just dances. But that's the thing. They shouldn't be. Their amazing flexibility and the crammed content and graceful movements happening waist up end up distracting from what's happening with their feet and their skates in relation to the ice, which you'd think is more important since this is a *skating* competition after all. Those aggressive leg extensions for example were so mesmerizing to watch until you realize they're not only there to disguise wobbly landings but even there to correct wrong edge landings.

    Russian shenanigans again. The non Russian athletes are the victims. Scherbakova's heavy hammer toe definitely deserves a +10 GOE and all of their combined pre-rotations will be enough to form a quad axel!

      When Anna pre-rotates for a quad it’s so ugly, she bends down so far her arms are almost touching the ice as she winds up for it. I feel every quad she does should get a negative GOE for that. I know this video was about Short program but I can’t get over her ugly quads in her Free.

    After Kamila's doping drama I stopped watching the "competition". I'm from Russia and I'm deeply embarrassed. I think other skaters needed to boycott the event.
    They are risking their health, wasting energy and time on something already fixed. Okay, I don't expect everything to be 100% fair and without manipulations on a side but the way Eteri's team is playing their game makes them look sick.
    The giving of heart medicine to teenagers, the mental abuse, brutal diet, lack of care for their injuries' and the guilt trip after, excessive training and questionable technique on top of monopoly put in place for them to win and God knows what more, is too much!!! Eteri needs mental assistance and Russians need to stop the cult-like behavior.

      It was because of the quad jumps. The problem is the technical score is not weighted evenly with the presentation score. Even if you fall on a jump you get credit for the rotation. Trusova was sloppy in her free skate and should have earned bronze medal instead of silver.

    I've been skating for 50+ years, coached for 30. I agree with everything you've said. Kamila cheats all her jumps, she's pretty much forward when she leaves the ice, if that's the standard then Suria B should be credited for the first womens quad. Her cross overs are choppy and her connecting steps, I didn't notice that many. It's not her fault and she is a beautiful skater, the best to come along in a long time. It's the coaching that's lacking, they should all come her and train under Brian, so he can clean up their jumps.

    So this is my personal opinion for each top skater:
    - Anna: the worst crossovers, she basically drags her other foot with the bad postures I couldn't get pass how she gets 9s in SKATING SKILLS. She was noticeably slow and Kaori did her SP after Anna did not do Anna's skating any favor. She got all green lights (no review) even for her flat lutz and flip, which is ... a choice.
    - Kamila: regardless of the doping, she is clearly a good skater. Bad flip and lutz technique as have been discussed before. SS is the better one from the 3 ROC skaters but should still below Wakaba & Kaori
    - Sasha: no skating skills, not just bad crossovers every transitions she did were not good. ISU even used her Cruella FP to explain judging TR and they said it should receive 4.0 while here she got like 8.5 - 9.0, okay. Her PCS at 35 is basically a middle finger to all athletes scoring below her.
    - Kaori: definitely the skate of the night, the lutz should have been called ! based on replay. But her SS and overall performance should be getting the highest PCS mark
    - Wakaba: her 3T< call was unfair, it should have been at max q and when will judge stop underscoring her PCS? she has one of the best SS and performance ability in that competition and her PCS below Sasha is disgusting.
    - Young: her 3A

      Yes!! Thank you I mostly agree with all of this. The Trusova Cruella 4.0 thing I just saw today and it blew my mind - makes sense, but still mind blowing. Such harsh (or perhaps fair) judging on all skaters and then insane over scoring for the Russians. A pity.

      I agree with you that Wakaba should be leading. I don't understand how people think that Kaori is a more talented skater than Higuchi. It's the other way around. Sakamoto is strong below the waist, but her upper body stiffness and awkwardness is not indicative of a great skater. She is overrated because people like her personality and style, along with years of her fed promoting her. Just like they used to overlook Satoko's URs, while constantly lowballing Wakaba, who they seem to dislike.

    I've skated and coached, so I enjoy listening to your opinions. I'm back from the days of 6.0 and figures, so I am not the greatest fan of IJS ; but I certainly understand why it was created. The problem with Skating judging in general is that the judges have so much to see and score in such a short amount of time that they unconsciously veer towards reputations, and things they've heard, and what other judges are doing.. rather than totally evaluating just what they are seeing. Some of the things are so fast also, say quad jumps, that you really don't even "see" them all that well. I'd say judges do the best they can; and sometimes when you have the luxury of viewing programs over and over, and comparing the ones you're interested in, side by side, you can see they made mistakes. I also think, that just like 6.0, there is room in a points system for judges' bias and preconceived loyalties/opinions to creep in. I suppose any artistic sport is just going to be that way. The one big error that has been building for a long time is the how much the points are skewered toward quads. What kind of situation did the sport big wigs ever imagine that would result in? Of course, there are more tiny girls bodies, younger girls that have shorter careers, and lots of injuries.A points system is always going to push for difficulty, and cramming as much stuff in as you are allowed to, over other more subjective values such as musicality, flow, artistry, ice coverage, facial expression, originality, etc which may seem easier. At least figures kept skaters in the system longer, so you'd have senior events with people in them that had a little maturity, and that the audiences had been watching for a while, and could root for.

      @DeepSeas.. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not buying it. It’s really not hard to judge these programs. The judges see them during practice, warmups, and throughout the season. They know exactly how empty a program is ahead of time and which skaters actually have proper technique. This is simply not a hard job. They criteria are quite clear and they don’t give a crap. They know exactly what they’re doing when they give Trusova’s garbage programs a 9 in interpretation and performance and when they give Shcherbakova a 9 in skating skills when she has some of the most labored skating ever seen in the sport.

  • @phantasmex
    @phantasmex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The Eteri skaters’ GOE and PCS have always been inflated. Non-Eteri Russian skaters don’t get that benefit (see Liza), unless the Eteri-option is non-viable, then the bonus gets transferred to them (see Adelina). Unfortunately, like most, I’m pessimistic about there ever being actual fairness reform taking place. This is what women’s FS has degenerated into and no one wants to fix it.

  • @paolocastellano2771
    @paolocastellano2771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the ISU should give pre-rotated full blade take offs a certain number of points deduction and also make those flip/"Lutz"jumps only count as a loop.… The judges DO NOT need to review each jump in the competition. They should have a predetermined base value for each skaters' individual jumps. So for example, Trusova, Scherbakova and Valieva especially, have something like a 5 or more point deduction on their flip/"Lutz" for the full blade and more than 3/4 revolutions pre rotation on all their jump take offs. Someone like Hanyu and Kolyada should get an extra 2-3 points on their Lutz takeoff that has ZERO pre rotation. Let's be honest, once a skater has massive pre rotation, there is a 99.999999999999999999% chance they can NEVER change that after practicing it incorrectly 20,000+times since they learned everything incorrectly... Look at Mesvedeeva when she went to Brian... Sure she changed a little but she could never do the newer, proper technique even on a simple double Axel consistently..... If the skaters had some kind of test session with super competent technical judges that could assess a skaters' jumps at the beginning of each season and get a base value for all their jumps this would be great... The penalty/deduction for pre rotating should be similar to say when a jump is under rotated and it is downgraded to the next whole revolution less. For example, when Hanyu was not within 1/4 revolution on his quad Axel, it was downgraded to a triple. Valieva's triple flip is sooo low and sooo pre rotated, it should almost be downgraded to a double. Just think how much more easily Oksana Baiul would have done her triples if she cheated them all more than 3/4 revolutions on the take off...

    The bullet points for +GOE in jumps are:
    1) very good height and very good length (of all jumps in a combo or sequence)
    2) good take-off and landing
    3) effortless throughout (including rhythm in Jump combination)
    **NOTE: bullets 1 - 3 must ALL be met for a skater receive +4 or +5 GOE**
    4) steps before the jump, unexpected or creative entry
    5) very good body position from take-off to landing
    6) element matches the music
    Despite what some online skating fans like to pretend, you can get a +5 on a jump with no transitions into or out of it. Do it perfectly and well-timed to the music, and you'll hit the 5 bullets you need for a +5.
    Happy judging!

    Hi Eric, I was wondering if you could explain crossovers. Because as an ordinary viewer, I often see people mixing performance and interpretation of music with skating skills. And this is confusing, I'm not sure if speed alone is good SS or the crossovers need to have a certain quality? You briefly mentioned the position of the upper body in the video. Could you elaborate with more examples? It would be very useful for those without skating backgrounds.

    • @EricStinehart
      @EricStinehart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe I should make a separate video on this but - long story short, speed/power + quality are both import for xovers. I believe speed alone is a SS, but if they are achieved by bad/a lot of xovers then it’s “worth” less. In general, in good xovers: you take long, powerful ones; the foot on inside reaches out at an inside edge. Only a couple gets you significant speed across the ice. Your upper body remains completely still and in good posture. Looks easy and smooth. If you do smaller/wobbly crossovers with upper body moving, it gets worse.

    • @EricStinehart
      @EricStinehart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      😂 this is funny. If you really get used to the hand over head technique it can help you with getting “up” into the jump and to spin tightly in the air; sometimes we’ve seen skaters who can ONLY do jumps like that. Kamila 3A is one example. I think it should be limited and not *automatically* get higher GOE (I do think for example Kamila 3A with arms over head is quite impressive & probably should.)

    • @amexred
      @amexred 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no. The 6.0 system is terrible compared to this scoring system. Sarah Hughes would have had no chance at gold if she were not top 4 as a short example . Artistic impression, Presentation , PCS has always forever been able to be manipulated . The PCS incarnation just allows for more manipulation since it's even more broken down vs 6.0 system. I'm fine with the standings other than Valieva which I'm not counting. Anna is a world champion and has won multiple competitions . Reputation exists . Consistency exists and that has always been the case in skating . Are others underscored . That's a true statement . Finally I think the arms over the head is deserving of GoE depending on how that is. Remember a tano Lutz ? That was a impressive thing. Why don't more men do arms over the head ? Also Elizavetas arm over the head is junk vs the way Kamila or Zhou presents it both arms stretched . That's impressive to me.

      istg maybe we'll get Valieva rules just like Zagitova rules: you can only do rippon/ tano/ arms variation max 1 in the SP and 3 in the FP. I love arm variations before because they can give different look to a jump but I hate it when it's used to fix jump issues.

  • @eggizgud
    @eggizgud 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Yeah, the Rippon jumps when overused actually don't look pretty anymore. The axis also has to be right, the entire line of body, and not all have that, which is obvious when it keeps being repeated! Also, the difficulty in effort might be offset by the reduced friction for the twists.

    I think most of us watching are pretty much feeling the same regarding the results. I choked when I saw the PCS for Trusova, and made me more depressed watching the next skaters, til Kaori came along. Sometimes I like to give the skaters scores based on the 6.0 system cuz I don't have a life, but I would have given it to Wakaba, Kaori, then You Young.
    6 Valieva: 5.6/5.8 11.4
    5 Scherbakova: 5.6/5.9 11.5
    2 Kaori: 5.8/5.9 11.7
    12 Trusova: 5.2/5.4 10.6
    1 Wakaba: 5.9/5.9 11.8
    3 You: 5.8/5.8 11.6
    9 Loena: 5.5/5.7 11.2
    7 Alysa: 5.7/5.6 11.3
    4 Yelim Kim: 5.8/5.7 11.5
    8 Gubanova: 5.6/5.7 11.3
    10 Bell: 5.2/5.7 10.9
    11 Chen: 5.1/5.6 10.7
    I feel really bad for Wakaba and Kaori, since they are most likely not gonna have any shot at a medal, even if the Russians fall 2 or 3 times in their programs.

    Thank you so much to for explaining a lot from your insider point of view. I do like figure skating but the recent policy of ISU is in my opinion doing much harm to this difficult but lovely sport by prefering jumps and neglecting other elements like spins, steps. transitions, flow on ice which contribute to the artistry of the program. As a matter of fact well balanced athletisizm such as jumps anf the artistic moments should define the meaning of figure scating. As for Russian scaters unfortunstely these young girls are just " consumer goods ", noone of them is chosen for next Olympics because nowadays 12 or 13 years old are already waiting in the row.
    I am sad because of Liza who is a woman of interpretation and also capable of jumping 3A. As a selfmade skater I could learn on my own just the basics but I liked to skate. Now I am still skiing but I am aware whow slippery the ice is and I watch figure scating mostly thanks to You Tube, but if trand would proceed in current direction it will be less and less watchable. Again thanks a lot for everything. Best regards from Zagreb, Croatia.

    I knew when they introduced the +5/-5 GOE system (previously +3/-3), it was only going to lead to even worse overscoring. It was designed to reward quality execution, but like PCS, it's just used to prop up certain skaters.

    Anna S. was the rightful winner of the ladies olympic gold medal. The way she glided across the ice and nailed those quad combinations was breathtaking. She combine technical excellence with artistry better than the other ladies in the event. She was the only one who didn't let the nerves of olympic competition bother her. She deserved better treatment from her team. She was amazing and had a great attitude--a true champion.

    Eric,
    Thank you, for your overview. In addition, Russian-American Polina Edmunds' podcast interview is a MUST listen. She is profoundly intelligent, articulate, and well educated on each and every technical aspect of the breakdown of each jump, scored points (both technical and component GOE), choreography (and lack of), international requirements, rules, breached Olympic oath, etc. She blew my mind regarding what she and her mother personally witnessed in the ladies' dressing room from a group of the Russian Ice Babies at an international competition a few years ago. Again, my mind was blown!

    I agree that all 3 leaders were overscored especially in PCS. Having said that i must highlight that that PCS inflation is detected in all FS discipline. Men event leaders also recieved enormous PCS which do not correspond to isu rules in my eyes. Judges were really generous to ice dance leaders and blinded to many small mistakes. I wish all the judging criticism had been directed towards judges probably with highlighting their names. I believe focus and pressure would have been shifted

    sorry, but it's clear you don't like Anna, who's World Champion and three times champion of Russia...to compare the PCS of Anna and Kaori, sorry, but Kaori is a massive jumper with no pcs...she got super inflated PCS marks and not only...I agree with Trusova, she has no PCS, and her scores should reflect that...why didn't you analyze the 3A of Kamila's (it seemed under-rotated to me) in comparison with Wakaba's...what i find it funnier is that you were a skater and you should know how subjective this sport is and also hop political, especially at the Olympic Games.

    I’m just a fan that played hockey & I don’t understand what is good technique. To me, if it looks good it is good. Anna looks 6’ tall with her long lines & graceful skating. Everything she does looks effortless & elegant when she’s on. To me the artist aspect of figure skating is what is so enjoyable to watch. I’m sure if I was a figure skater I’d be obsessed with technique, but I’m just a guy that’s been watching since 1976 & I’m amazed with today’s skaters. Anna’s back spins & Bielman are the best ever. She is freakishly flexible & can touch her bum with the back of her head. That’s what a big fan thinks & I know what the different jumps are so I’m probably more informed than the once every Olympics crowd, so they’re even more clueless than me. 😉❤️✌🏻

    • @jc3drums916
      @jc3drums916 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a casual viewer, I agree for the most part, but artistry is only part of the component score. With the rest of it, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what to look for, so it wouldn't be fair for me to say "if it looks good, it is good." And when you take a closer look at Anna's jumps, and you see her full edge takeoffs on toe jumps, takeoffs with incorrect edges, severe pre-rotations, and sometimes slight under-rotations...it's pretty awful, and she's clearly being overscored. Because I don't know all the technical details, artistry trumps all for me, so Anna was my favorite in the Olympics (yes, I think she's even better than Kamila in that regard), but clearly that makes me unfit to judge.

    • @dannyc6166

      @@jc3drums916 ladies figure skating has to be technical & exacting while looking like your not trying to skate. Jumps should be tight & smooth. Evegenia Medvedeva is the best at it plus she has that it factor that can’t be explained. She can really tell a story on the ice that reaches the top row & on TV. Alaina Zigitova is an incredible jumper, & she’s really pretty, but she doesn’t flow & glide with elegance like Anna does. But I’m not watching anything that the Russians are participating. I really love the skaters, but I can’t supporting them while Putin is still in power & the war in Ukraine has ended. The doping isn’t even relevant since until Putin is out of power. 🤞❤️✌🏻🇺🇦
