Featuring bandleader Louis Cato and “THE LATE SHOW band,” the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated show is broadcast from the historic Ed Sullivan Theater. Stephen Colbert took over as host, executive producer and writer of THE LATE SHOW on Sept. 8, 2015.
This guy will go down as one of the best songwriters of this generation.
He’s already there…and working on the next generation!
Him and Chris
Imagine the beautiful heartache of singing, "days when we raged we flew of the page, such damage was done," just weeks after filing for a divorce from the person this song was written for.
Even though the song was written about amanda, I’m sure he has the ability to disassociate himself from that during the performance.
@@JimG89887 Nope, no way.
Isbell does this song right. Nobody else should try. It’s all his.
Well, it is HIS song. HE wrote it. People are copying it because it’s a Gawd Dang prolific song!! He is the best songwriter of this generation. Ask anyone who is anyone in LA, Nashville, NY, or anywhere between; they all wish they wrote his songs.
Read/listen to the lyrics from Vampires, Elephant, Children of Children. Of those words don’t touch your soul, you just may be a frickin’ vampire!
Zach Brown does it good but he lowers the key so the notes are expressed with less effort. But I like the accordions he uses.
With all do respect, Zach Brown is the most famous cover artist in the history of music.. He found a way to make an extremely lucrative career off of others' talent...and well, good for him, I suppose.....@@JRibs
@@camparton21 Yvette is the one that really gets to me. That line "And I let out my breath, and I couple with death" has such gravity, like no other lyric I've ever heard.
@@kindking8009 Morgan Wallen I think sings the best rendition of "Cover Me Up", but Jason in all due respect to him, he is a prolific song writer!
So disappointed in this comment section. Take a moment to appreciate Jason Isbell for the extraordinary songwriter he is. Excellent rendition, so happy to see him looking well and going strong.
Bot spam marketers don't care.
I haven’t seen any negative comments ?
I love a good songwriter, and he is one of the best.
“So disappointed in the comment section” is the battle cry of being on the internet
@@deadeyedmillennialmedia Ha ha - so true!
Southeastern is one of those albums that grows on you and never let's you forget it. ❤❤❤
Discovered Isbell through this album. Have been a huge fan of his ever since. Going to see him in February and I’m just counting down the days.
Not only one of the best modern songwriters, but also one of the most compelling and tight live acts. Always go see them perform if you get the chance.
One of the best written songs ever.
Longtime Isbell fan. Just an amazing songwriter and storyteller, not to mention a rock solid guitarist. This song has been a fave for years. I love how it has evolved a bit. So strong and confident now whereas originally it was just so raw. Great at all times just different. Time heals us all. So grateful he shares his gifts.
Wow, he sounds like the soul of America. Incredible!
Yes. And we know the state of America's soul in the last couple years...
Delivers this song as strong as he had 10 years back! I've recently learnt it and it's stuck in my head so today's discovery aint gonna help LOL
Jason and the 400 Unit killing it, as usual ❤
I have been an Isbell fan since he was a chubby kid in a baseball hat playing with the Drive By Truckers. The first song he wrote for them was Decoration Day, and the whole band was blown away by it. He was amazing even back then.
It's been 10 years since I first heard Southeastern and was introduced to Jason's music and I FINALLY got to see him live in Chicago a little over a week ago. He's just incredible. Such passion and conviction in his writing and performing. Sad that he and Amanda have split. Sadler's guitar is no substitute for her fiddle. I'm just thankful he's still playing this song even though it was written about her.
yes, I really miss Amanda's fiddle and backup vocals
I don't know if there's anyone better than Jason Isbell. Love him, wish he's play in New Mexico again.
Saw him at the Kiva and it was great.
Was hoping for the applause for _I sobered up, swore off the stuff_
Here ya go Jason 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Keep up that ODAAT 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Pretty sure they filmed in the Ed Sullivan Theater without audience a week or so ago when Colbert had an appendectomy and the actual show was cancelled.
Thinking the same.
@@rmh7069 that makes perfect sense 🤙🏻
I caught myself cheering at that point anyway. His writing, playing, and singing are as close to perfect as a person can be, imo. Plus he gives of himself often for causes he believes in.
It’s almost like discovering Kris as a young angst filled teenager.
I'm so glad he sang this. The world needs a reminder that this is his song, not that tool who covered it a couple years ago.
Yep!
Wallen is a no talent hack. Only good thing about it is whenever it gets played, Jason gets a check too.
I would love to hear Tool cover this✌🏻
That no talent tool made Jason a fuck ton of money.
@@paccyc128 that he would be just fine without
Jeez, how have I missed this guy for so long? That was incredible.
You can’t just casually listen to Jason. Every word, every note seems important. I’m not even a big country music fan but I’m totally mesmerized when I watch/listen to him (and this ridiculously good band!). Not sure if there’s a better all-around musician writing and performing today.
Great last name and great music taste 🫡
first thing, this ain't country. i don't know what is anymore, but it ain't this. this (jason and the 400) is kinda americana (golden smog?) and early (the good) bruce (darkness?). and that ain't bad...
Jason doesn't claim to be country, he gets pissed off when someone tries to pigeon hole him as a country artist.
Father John Misty
So happy JI400U chose that song for Colbert. Excellent job!😊
LOVE IT! As intended to be! Can’t anyone keep up with the original. Especially with the damn awesome 400U. Rock on boys! Rock on
I've heard this song 100s of times (twice live), and this performance still made me cry.
Found Jason through Zach Bryan, get the honor of seeing them both perform at Gillette Stadium in June next year. Grateful to be alive during a time with such talented artists.
fyi...jason is playing in boston a few days b4 the gillette show at roadrunner.
@@Z-bone64indeed. Better venue for him.
They’re both fantastic! I found Bryan through Isbell haha
The greatest songwriter of this generation.
Gobless Jason & that 400. Hero’s right here, Sadler and this band are the best imo
Only recently discovered Jason through a colleague of mine. What an amazing voice and performer
First time I ever heard Jason Isbell was a show called Nashville 2.0 where he sang this song with his wife Amanda. Sent chills up spine then and sends chills up my spine now.
Amanda is a beautiful addition to this song. Miss her with his band but wish her well on her solo pursuits
Was that at the Roman? Absolutely perfect show.
Ryman
I always thought this was his best song ever and then I heard Dreamsicle 😭 Jason Isbell and the 400U are a national treasure
Dreamsicle is a short story...posing as a song.
Hot Damn, JI and 400U!! I never get enough of y’all!
Seen you live 8X+ 1X with your lovely wife, A.S., when you were supporting the master himself, John Pride, at the Greek in LA.
Jason is the best living singer-songwriter of our generation. Period. His live shows are incredible!
Typo. Should read John Prine!
So dang good
His songwriting just as good as any best selling fiction or memoir. Learned lot about his process on his HBO documentary. It's a fascinating journey you're on, Jason. Keep up the great work 👍 ❤❤
One of my favorite songs of his and one of my favorites period.
He sounds great.
Love Jason Isbell and this song..still on my playlist from 10 years ago ❤
I usually don’t comment, but Jason killed it here. Cant say these bot comments aren’t annoying.
This guy seems pretty talented. I can see him possibly developing a devoted fanbase and headlining concerts.
😉
😂
Whaaat?
Thought you were serious for a sec because I've actually never heard of him. Luckily.

@@UberLummoxIt's okay. You've just proven you have horrible taste.
@@UberLummoxgo listen to wallen then. You don't know music. Period
That’s how it’s done Wallen
lol. So dumb. Who’s made multi multi millions singing it. Waller. Isabell has made millions off of wallen singing it. Numbers don’t lie
@@Youknowitsmeman Whatever. Who wrote it? You know who wrote it.
Might just be the best active artist today, artistry in another level. His guitar playing is in par with his singwriting which is pretty much masterful.
Glad hes getting exposure on these big platforms of late
I got to see them in GA at the Outlaw Festival show with Willie and family. They made a believer out of me.
What a powerful performance, much love to Isbell for this absolute classic.
Is everyone silently cheering when he gets to “ forever this time”?
I saw him play in Portland in 2017 and remember everyone cheering. I loved it so much. It took me two years to follow him on that path but I think of that moment all the time. I know he gets a lot of strength from that support.
Perfect song and an ABSOLUTELY PERFECT performance.
He is so good!❤❤
Jason is a national treasure and I'm grateful that he, Amanda and Mercy live here in Nashville
The opening pan, when you look over Jasons right shoulder where Amanda and Jimbo usually sit… the nuts to sing this on Colbert…. Frick
One of my most favorite songs. Thank you Jason!
Damn. 🥲More talent than the law should allow.
I'm going to tell you boys, that's some of the best god damn music we've had at the Country Bunker in a long time.
Too bad they didn't remember The Wreck of the Old 97.
AMAZING!!
Jason Isbell>Morgan Wallen
lol. Not even close. Great song. But it’s Wallen’s now.
My favorite version of this is from the show Austin city limits from ten years ago. Just him and Amanda. He really gets after it.
The attraction I have to this man is crazy. The voice, the writing, everything
And he's funny, too!
Beautiful!!!
awesome performance by one of the best. the power in his voice...
Simply amazing.
Who else can write songs like Jason Isbell? Amazing!
5:23 that lil lick was nice
Stand up guy and triple threat.
So much appreciation for this song and this performance.
You hear the 3:06 😅 ohhh man!
An Incredibly talented singer songwriter
Cant wait to see him in Dallas
A guy I knew turned me on to Jason. Thanks Cros. RIP 💜
I was just thinking the same thing. I miss that curmudgeon. He really touted Jason. When John Prine and Croz sing praises you know you need to listen.
Sooo Good ❤
He is so great when he talks about his experience.
This is an insanely great performance. The whole goddamn thing.
Holy shit bud got a voice on him
Wow.
Great job Jason Isbell and 400 Unit!
The best in the business
Amazing
Old song, new teeth, all good!
So good!
Jason owns this song!
Literally
Legally. Not artistically.
@@Youknowitsmeman"Yeah, its your painting and you crafted it from nothing but some guy with a better marketing team traced over it so its his now"
Killer version of one of the greatest songs of this era. I could watch this 50 times in a row.
It's HIS song. He wrote it. This is the original version.
@@kakuspis Yes, I know. I meant that this live performance (of his own song) is particularly great.
TH-cam are pretty slow in removing all the spam on the comments here. Get your act together.
he sang his heart out
I wore Southeastern out.
Oh, so good - heartbreaking!
At this point he was likely right in the middle of his marriage falling apart. Probably very difficult to perform this song in particular and he was able to hide it very well. Just a professional all around. Although it seems an odd choice as I believe he’s in total control of the label so no one would have forced him to play a song he wrote for his soon to be ex-wife. I been through it all and everyone has different stories and reasons but I’m still living in dark times 3 years later.
🔥🔥🔥
Top notch
What is the point of all this random-looking, chatbot-like blather about some new product from Jeff Bezos's company?
It has nothing to do with the music or the artist.
Some form of advertising, intended to excite curiosity and interest? It doesn't seem like the large corporation named after a large river would need to spam up random but well trafficked TH-cam sites like this. That company is big enough and unavoidable enough that anything they do is news in itself.
It's spam... report it
it's not actually amazon
I reported every single comment mentioning that forgettable app or system or whatever all the spam was about. There had to have been nearly 100 separate comments about that crap.
@@jnmsks6052Ditto here. Report as spam every damn time.
@@tinay9491 Doesn't surprise me.
The thing appears to be some kind of Bitcoin competitor from BezosCo., so maybe it's an early buyer trying to generate interest and a price rise so he can cash in.
One of Isbell's great intros to the world was performing "If It Takes a Lifetime" on Colbert, years ago. Sadly, it is gone from youtube.
Put it back up, Colbert Show!
During COVID he Streamed in a performance of White Man's World on Colbert. That got me hooked. I thought "This guy got major balls for a country artist"
First time i missed Jason at the residency @Ryman in 4 years. Still sad, because scalpers jacked the damn prices up as usual
Just embarrassed I didn't discover Jason until recently...
Don’t be, just enjoy the journey!
The best part about being late to this party is there’s so much music to discover.
Ha Jason the 400 unit, has to be at old ECM. May gave been
on Gistown Road or Stutts Road. Maybe at Rogers High! Congratulations
As good as it gets.
Okay😊,Amen
he seems to have this music thing figured out.
One of those rare songs where I love the live version way better than studio. This is another great live one. Love the electric guitar solo and the drums on this. The artist apparently hates people like me over political views, but I can acknowledge a great song despite differences.
He doesn't hate you he just knows you're wrong.
@@kkpenney444 Gee, people like you are so humble as well. I know it is easy being a liberal like him. Just think with all emotion and every problem becomes easy to solve. Blame a gun for every murder and boy every problem becomes easy to solve. I don’t trust criminals and apparently he does. You can have the last word. I can tell from your comment you aren’t the type that thinks you have anything to learn from others and that you worship celebrities.
Wow. And Stephen pronounced the last name "correctly"
or should I say, she once had me
Steve i hope you realize how dangerous that was. We who live with pain often question much as to carryon despite it all. You were privledged to get good care and return to work. Some dont...
Dayamn!!!
Just nobody like Jason - so so talented.
Great vocal by Jason but I miss Amanda’s backing vocals.
Like the new choppers!!! 🦷
😲🤯
Good song. Not that new. Glad to hear it.
Yeah, they said it’s the ten year anniversary of its release…
Jason & Unit are awesome! The first time I heard this song, the intro seemed like such an homage to The Beatles Norwegian Wood. Sweet!
I love his song I’m Yours
"Vampires" gets me in the feels hard after I lost my wife of 42 yrs a couple of years ago. Just like "Into the Mystic" took on a whole new meaning to me when I first heard it with my "widowers" ear"
That's Jason Mraz lol
Who's playing bass?
Anna Butterss! New permanent replacement for Jimbo. They've been with the 400 Unit for about a year or so I believe.
Where’s Jimbo?
