Lyrics:
A heart on the run
Keeps a hand on a gun
Can't trust anyone
I was so sure
What I needed was more
Tried to shoot out the sun
The days when we raged, we flew off the page
Such damage was done
But I made it through, 'cause somebody knew
I was meant for someone
So, girl, leave your boots by the bed
We ain't leaving this room
'Til someone needs medical help
Or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
I put your faith to the test
When I tore off your dress
In Richmond on high
I sobered up, I swore off that stuff
Forever this time
And the old lover's sing
"I thought it'd be me who helped him get home"
But home was a dream
One that I'd never seen 'til you came along
So, girl, hang your dress out to dry
We ain't leaving this room
'Til Percy Priest breaks open wide
And the river runs through
And carries this house on its stones
Like a piece of driftwood
So, cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
So, girl, leave your boots by the bed
We ain't leaving this room
'Til someone needs medical help
Or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
So cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good - เพลง

Jason Isbell best damn songwriter on the planet.
Was the best songwriter
JASON ISBELL...JASON ISBELL....commiting you to MEMORY...JASONISBELL...thank you JB...
My 80 yr old mom knows your grandparents. I show her your videos . she said she's so proud of you.
@@jake5287 was ? No , He IS ☝🏻
I get chills everytime I hear the crowd cheer after "I sobered up, and I swore off that stuff, forever this time".
Me too man!!! Every damn time
The best line in the song for sure.
Same!!!!!
Yes,yes yes, Rolly poly man..btw have you ever been on that stuff?? Me neither..Hey aren't you the tall skinny dude who stands outside of the circle k and harasses anyone that you imagine is really high? Which I found strange after your driver got into the car..and I realized that he sold more cocaine to undercover cops than most small towns can do in a year.. Now that gives me chills
@@randallbarr440 lol what the fuck
Still one of the very best things I've ever found on TH-cam...or anywhere.
MP: When I saw you had this queued up to review, I was thinking "Michael's about to get struck by lightning"; I wasn't disappointed..
I agree 🥰
Agreed. Absolutley stunning performance. I love seeing the audience faces....they are mesmerized by what their witnessing.
Love your channel Michael
Back at ya, Michael!
I agree and your channel brought me to it and i listen multiple times a week. Along with Travis Meadows Sideways. Two of the most perfect and beautiful songs I've heard. We have shockingly similar taste in music. Huge UM fan and dead head as well. Keep them coming.
I was fortunate enough to be at this show.
As a recovering addict, so many of Jason’s songs have made a huge impact on my life and sobriety, but this is by far one of my favorites.
When he began playing this, I started crying along with many others in the crowd.
I raised my hands to the sky with tears streaming down my face.
It felt as though I was hearing a pure and honest prayer being sung in church.
And since the Ryman is actually an old church with the pews still remaining as seats for concert-goers, the experience couldn’t have been more powerful or moving.
It was one of those deeply spiritual moments I won’t forget.
Thank you, Jason. You’ve impacted more lives than you know. Thank you for using your talents to help so many!
Lovely story. Good luck with recovery, you can do it! Stay strong! (27 years and counting!) Peace and prayers from Scotland. 🏴✊🇺🇸
Said very well...
Love your story. 💪🙏❤️
Jails, institutions and death are three of the four outcomes of addiction. The fourth is recovery. I'm so damned grateful for my precious recovery and the new eyes I see myself with.
I haven't seen him perform this live but I do get chills when I hear this song. I can relate, my addiction took me to the brink of death and I'm still here, 5 years later living a better life then I could have pictured for myself. Listening to Jason's music is like therapy for me and he sets a great example for those who are struggling
Nobody’s talking about that epic slide guitar at the end! Holy shit that was nuts!
He Derek Trucked us all. Insane!
Bro u ain’t lyin…
Sadler's guitar on this performance is especially brilliant.
Sadler killed it - so very very tasteful.
Trust me -- if you *ever* get a chance to see Jason, Amanda and the 400 Unit in person...go.
Jeff Whitcomb Almost saw him at a Jazz festival on the east coast of Canada, but we had a big storm. Next time.
I agree. We saw him on the 25th at the Ryman, our first time seeing him live, and my wife and I both said it was the best show we've ever been too. We'll see him again for sure!!!!
Can also confirm
Going to in July in Reno, can’t f-ing wait!!
Ok Covid...get gone. We got shit to do
My boyfriend and I, both addicts just celebrated 3 years together and have already endured for better or worse and this song is literally our story. Makes me sob every time I hear it. ❤🥺
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
“Home was a dream, one I’ve never seen, until you came around”. Fuuuuck me what a lyric
I have never loved someone this hard nor have I been loved this hard either. beautiful.
After all these years, Southeastern is still one of those albums that I can listen to from beginning to end without ever touching the needle. The whole experience cuts deep in the most hauntingly beautiful way. This song is one of those gut punches that I happily come back to again and again.
Thank you for sharing your gift.
Jason and Amanda are amazing writers and performers. The world is a far better place with these folks in it. My wife and I shared our first dance to "if we were vampires" on 9/9/17 and I can't think of a better song to call ours. Many thanks to this man!
7 minutes ago, stupid me was over here thinking that surely I'd already heard the best version of this song.
This guy seriously gets better every day.
Truth.
Same. I found myself somehow in a pool of tears just like the first time I ever heard the dog years ago. Such a powerful song...
Stunning. Chilling. Haunting. Genius
That smile he gave her before the last verse said everything!💕😍❤️😍❤️
It's amazing to see how much the crowd appreciate this song, they are not singing with him, they are LISTENING to him. They cheered about the sober up part, but no heckling... Damn, just amazing.
This song is absolutely perfect and sums up my life experience that lead up to meeting my wife 21 years ago. And she uses me for good to raise our daughters and love her fiercely!!!
this song seems timeless, like it was the first time I ever I heard it
The TONE on that slide!!!!!
Sadler Vaden is a guitar beast as well!
"Cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good". Wow Jason, this live version is immense ❤
My number one favorite Isbell song (and it's hard to choose from--there are so many of them). The raw admission of need in this one is breathtaking. 'Pretty sure my husband said something similar to me the first time he told me loved me thirty-years ago (different words, same beautiful meaning).
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶
It is so great to see them letting the songs grow after they are released on an album. Sometimes just in nuances, sometimes more. There are several great versions of this song, not least on the live album, but they take it to even higher levels here.
The most amazing performers to see live!!! Sadler Vaden is a guitar god!
Have seen Jason play this live many times here in Glasgow but It's clearly developing and this is as good as I've ever heard. Brilliant.
Sadler Vaden absolutely murdered that solo. Impeccable performance by everyone truly..
I haven't seen *every* performance of this song, but this has to be among the best ❤
Merrill Aldrich the Austin city limits is a great one too!
The Austin city's the best one but love them all
Merrill Aldrich Morgan wallen
I think they're all among the best. Sat 15 feet from him and her acoustic. Best most pure perfect musical experience ever. Hands down.
Thomas Homa Another vote for Austin City Limits
One of THE BEST songs I’ve heard
Yes, in many ways
Absolutely marvellous performance of this wonderful song
Jason and Amanda (and the 400 Unit) knock this out of the park, and that slide guitar ...
Never heard this Morgan Wallen fellow. Jason has been writing amazing tunes for years now
Just found out about this song and this band 3 days ago. Wtf. Mind blown.
I love this song. It makes it so much more beautiful to see the love between these two people the connection they have. I hope I have that one day to love and be loved like that what an amazing gift to give and to receive.
Love her shades & vocals❣️✊🏽
Ever grateful to have discovered Jason just a few years ago and I'm also recovering addict. Unless you are don't think you can fully grasp sentiment of some of his lyrics and if you are it instantly resonates with you.
I can only hope to find someone that looks at me the way these two look at each other! The talent is off the charts
His voice is incredible, raw, and fills the arena. But better than his voice is his song writing abilities.
I have followed Jason since his time with Drive by Truckers....he has evolved into a national treasure....he really broke out after he sang this on ACL and how they rock out on this version is
Something very special indeed
It’s impossible to not think this is an incredible song and performance. He was just as passionate playing it 10/8/23 in Chattanooga.
That slide guitar is phenomenal
I like how she sings along in this one. Also how the stage lights up more as the story comes to a good ending.
I swear if those two ever split, I'll be crushed.
God, l know.
My mom and Jason were friends in highschool. My dad would listen to him sing for hours at a local bar with his friends (for the wonderers, it was LaFonda's in Florence, AL) The first time Jason ever played this in public was at Shoals Theater before southeastern came out. He had to stop at the Richmond on high verse because he was crying, if that does not tell you how much emotion there is in this song, I hope it does now.
He just lays his whole soul out for the world to see, how tough would that be? He is an amazing songwriter, maybe the best of his generation!!
LaFondas! Yes! I grew up in Russellville and remember LaFondas very well ☺️
I love this song and he is definitely my favorite artist, and has been fir the last 7 years. Saw him in Chicago and Detroit... but god damn it’s time for a new album already!
I got to see him at the Ryman on this last set. They did play a new song. So im guessing a new album is in the works.
Yeah and Tyler Childers needs to hurry up too.
@@jasper_north Tyler Childers just put out a new album in August.
Jason said they're heading to the studio this December.
JPW That’s great!
I keep coming back to this in the last few days, reliving the Palais Theatre in Melbourne ,,,was a great version on the night, everyone in the band contributing to make such a powerful rendition 👍👍
Wow. They never cease to amaze and move me.
This song hits my heart
So glad the magnolias bloomed, and these are different days. 🎶...forever this time🎶👍
if we were vampires, it would be relatively easy to be the last of our kind.
Thanks for this. Just love it
Love this song and their performance of it - so much talent on that stage. I have about 4 different versions of them singing it in my playlist!
Beautiful Jason! The lighting and everything was great! .
Stunning.
Phenomenal performance
So good. More please. :)
I was there!!!
It was an incredible show!!!
This is the perfect song for someone who is in love or ever been in love
Saw him open for Chris Stapleton back in 2016. Not gonna lie, I’d never heard of him before. But I’ll always remember him singing this one. Such a great song.
Just so epic.
One of my favorite songs of all time
Omg. Sadler. Just so good.
Great performance by great performers
Jason is my favorite contemporary artist. I love this song and the story behind it. I'm sure that John Lennon would love knowing that Norwegian Wood's melody inspired such a beautiful tune.
Dang, how did I never notice that?
Ok I want to see him live now!
So lovely this tune this as a artist myself will get me going ineveryway
hot damn this is so friggin good
Some day I will at the Ryman for Isbell! Perfect match
Nothing or no one like this guy! WOW!
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶
Heard this same rendition in Fort Worth a few days ago. Amazing
Wow, just wow. All that I can say.
Heartfelt 💛😢💛
Jason has been open about his appreciation and blessing of Morgan Wallen's cover of this song. It was not my cup of tea considering my introduction to Morgan was his song "Whiskey Glasses" which in my opinion is the antithesis of "Cover Me Up". But I respect them both and glad Jason spoke out and tried to calm the fan base down. This performance here is the reason why we are so passionate about the song and why Jason and the 400 Unit reign supreme. The killed it.
Perfection
My wife and I saw them a year ago at the Ryman. Hard to believe time passed by so fast
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶
I got to be honest, I didn't even know anything about you until today, and I read what you wrote about Jerry Jeff Walker. Thank you for standing up for what's right! Man, I'm subscribing and buying your latest album. RIP Gypsy Song Man , JJW.
We need to see you at the CMA’s. Just found your music. Thanks to TH-cam. Astounding
No we don't morgan Wallen is better.
This song is amazing. Jason is remarkably good. Jason has never said the n word.
No sir never a joke- stronghold that I have not broken yet- she and the hold are strong- see is scared of the spirit . Has not left me for a minute !
Booked for Hammersmith. I hope it happens. Can’t wait to see a gig again.
This is bar far the best performance of this song EVER 😢
Absolutely and just saw them do it at the Greek, and had the joy of turning my son on to them. This song is, damm this band is strong and tight.
Insane.

100% truth...well said, Jack Lewis.

It’s so fucking good
I mean, WTF is better than this?
I love Alabama pines...
I laugh every time someone comments about how there’s no good music, these days.
Heard this song a bunch but, DAYUM, if this performance didn’t hit me in the gut and cause feelings.
Yea man I agree, I do think most music these days is crap, but then I listen to Jason Isbell, Jamey Johnson, and Chris Stapleton. Those three are holding it down for me.
I was suppose to go watch them live this year! 😭😭😭 but I will play a live version of this song as my first dance at my wedding!!! Such a relatable and well written song!
Jason Tecumseh Valley, and Poncho & Lefty written by Townes Van Zandt tell Spotify that and you have no right in changing the lyrics hence the meaning of the song - not all songs are written for kids - remember sometimes its meant that way- have some self-respect and most of all respect for the greatest country - folk songwriter ever - Townes Van Zandt
So girl, leave your boots by the bed

JASON ISBELL
please upload this song
who else wants a tyler childers cover
Idk. I like Tyler, but I think no one can do this song like Jason, the true and personal experience just can't be replicated. Sorry for whoever doesn't think so, but especially by that clown Wallen. And I'm definitely not saying that because of what he said, couldnt give a shit bout what he said. Just dont like new country. With the exception of Tyler and a few more. Also Jason is one of the best sonwriters of this era, if not ever.
the ryman is the greatest venue of ALL TIME
As a foreigner, I wonder what is meant by "enough to use me for good", please anyone? :)
That line has a double meaning: "for good" means both "to do good," in the sense of "use me to do good in the world," and also "forever" in the sense of "keep me forever."
I see it as being about trust when you're at your weakest point and have to surrender in order to heal.
@@merrillaldrich9170 Well-said. That's what I was going to respond!
I'll add that "know you're enough" means "know that you're good enough (the word "good" could also be any other positive adjective here)" in the sense that he loves her for everything that she is
Rougher then the timber from Fond du Lac
It rhymed but I don't think much if any timber ever came out of Fond du Lac. I live about 30 miles from there and have for over 40 years.
George Possley Most of the buildings listed in the register were a result of economic prosperity following the lumber industry boom in the Fox Valley and the newly rich building residences in the area.
@@jasper_north Of course! What a dumb comment on my part. It's like I never studied history. Well, I was a math major so there's that. Thank you for your patience with my ignorant comment. I forget that this was all forest before the white man came and began his plunder. Lumber was gold in the 1800's.
George Possley no worries, I look from the air. Airline captain A321.
George Possley just have to consider the time period of the story. All becomes clear.
Top 3 influences for me. Not so much in the sound of the music but lyrically this guy is an absolute genius.
